Another Day

  1. Another Day (4 stars)

After reading this assignment, I went through my photos and came across this picture I took a few years ago in Nevada. This picture does not have any filter or was ever edited, which is hard to find these days. Looking at this picture, it makes me feel relaxed instantly. I came across this quote and thought it fitted well with this assignment. “Never waste any amount of time doing anything important when there is a sunset outside that you should be sitting under!” ? C. 2. Changing Fortunes (80’s theme & 3 stars)

I picked this writing activity because I like reading fortune cookies. Most of the time, I believe they can pertain to one’s life in some aspect or another. I am connecting this fortune to our class theme, the 80’s. The fortune is “Embrace change, don’t fight it!” If people did not embrace change from the 80’s we may still be carrying around phones that look like bricks or perms still being in style.

3. To my mom (4 stars)

Mom, I can’t thank you enough for that that you have done for me. You always know how to make me laugh when I am sad and calm me down when I am mad. Thank you for always encouraging me to be my best whether it’s with sports, school, or relationships, you always know what to say. I hope to be like you when I group up! You wear 100 different hats every day and make it look so easy. Love you!

4. Extra Extra Read All About It (80’s theme & 3 stars)

For this assignment, I watched 25 minutes of Full House (S1:E1.) The directions were to pay special attention to the extras in it. Note their acting skills, what they’re wearing? How many extras did the show have? Did any of them talk? What were their ages?
The show started in the Fuller house where there were no extras or people in the background. After 15 minutes, a woman rang the doorbell. She was tall with blond hair and was dressed up looking for Uncle Jessie. I’m not sure if I would consider her an extra but she is the only person who appeared in the show who was not living at the Fuller house. I thought there would be more extras in this episode but, I was wrong.

99 Extras

For this assignment, I chose to watch Brooklyn 99. A show, that while I have no interest in, my friends are obsessed with. The episode’s plot was that a bunch of convicts from jail escaped and its the 99’s job to catch them all. I thought this would be perfect because of the amount of extras it could have. The first 10 minutes where in the precinct and that had about 30 extras in the background. They were all doing various things, none talked. They wore either police uniforms or neutral colored clothing to blend in. A few would have exaggerated facial expressions while one of the main characters would talk but other than that, none really stood out, they just blended in.

The rest of the episode was done in an area of New York that was cleared off (because of the escaped criminals) so there weren’t many extras, other than when they caught one of the criminals.

One of the biggest things I noticed was when all of the extras were around in the precinct, whatever room they were in, there was always someone on a computer, standing by a window staring at a file, or walking by.

When they were in a room with no extras, at least one or two would walk by every  5 or six lines.

Overall, the extras didn’t talk, they wore clothes to blend in, and were all about young adult to middle aged (around the same age as the cast).

(The assignment was titled Extra Extra read all about it  and was worth 3 stars.)

Extra Extra, Turns Out People Can Act

This week all of our Assignment Bank projects had to be out of the writing section which made me all like: “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The writing it burns… “*shrivels up and dies*

I severely dislike writing.

So for one of the projects I did Extra Extra Read All About It which is worth 4 out of the 8 stars needed. In case you are too lazy to click on the link, the assignment was to watch any full-length episode and take notes on all of the extras to see if their acting skills are up to par. The show I chose to watch is Silicon Valley episode 1. I had never seen Silicon Valley but my brother recommended it and it was pretty good. I appreciated all of the programming jokes but its kind of stupid humor for a show with so much technicality. Its like The Hangover except with everybody being a millionaire (or to-be-millionaire) with really high intelligence. It confuses me but anyways- here is a list of all the extras that I kept track of. A lot of the extras were in large crowds but I did the best I could.

Drummer- blocked from view
Guitarist 1- tshirt jeans beanie
Guitarist 2- same except sub baseball hat
Guitarist 3- same sub no hat
Background dancer 1- female jacket and jeans
Background dancer 2- female belly shirt and jeans
Background dancer 3- male tshirt jeans
A lot of people in a crowd- all seem to be acting casual
Waitress- she was smiling. Waiters don’t smile.
Man with brown jacket- believable
Another crowd- they all look significantly concerned which is believable..

In the end, all of the extras did a good job walking through a doorway or casually chatting without looking like a newb. I was actually slightly disappointing by this but oh well.

I liked this assignment because it’s interesting to call your attention to the side characters. For the most part they’re just story fodder, but this makes you look more closely at their acting and how legitimate they seem. I think this would have paired well with the write a side character background assignment, but alas the steak won the other assignment slot this week. I had been wanting to watch the new season of the league, so it was a good chance for me to catch up on my binge watching and get some work done.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It!

Assignment

For this assignment, I chose to watch an episode of Scrubs. If you haven’t heard of it, Scrubs is a hospital-based ‘dramedy’ that stars Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke. I’ve seen all of the episodes multiple times, so I just chose a random (and very sad) one, “My Lunch” (S5, E20).

Since Scrubs is based in a hospital, there are a lot of extras in most scenes, however you might not even notice them if you aren’t paying close attention. The extras in this episode are playing either the part of the medical staff (doctor, nurse, administrative), or of patients. The medical staff are wearing what you would expect in real life, so there are lots of white coats and scrubs. The patients are mostly wearing hospital gowns. There is a scene in this episode that takes place in a market/grocery store, and the extras in this scene are wearing typical dress apparel appropriate for this setting.

As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of extras in this show, as the hospital (Sacred Heart) is always very busy. To make the show as realistic as possible, the extras range in age from very young to very old. For the most part, the extras did not talk, but there were a few instances where you could hear a patient or nurse speak in the background of a scene. The extras are mostly just to make the hospital feel more “alive”, but it is very easy to tune them out if you are only interested in what the main characters have to say.

Extra Extra read all about it

Since almost every college student has access to a TV or netflix, for this assignment you’re gonna to watch tv (yes). Watch any show of your choosing that is atleast 30 min along. BUT pay special attention to the extras in it, the background people. Note their acting skills, what their wearing (bright clothes, dull clothes, name brand).. how many extras did the show have? did any of them talk? what age were they?
