Tutorial for “Why So Serious?” Video Assignment

This is a tutorial that will show you how to do the “Why So Serious?” assignment, where you have to take a video of a serious movie and add the audio from a funny movie. To follow along with my tutorial, you will need iMovie, iTunes, and QuickTime Player, all of which should be available if you have a Mac computer. Part of this tutorial will consist of screenshots because I can’t show you how to use the screen recording in QuickTime Player when I am actually using it myself to record a tutorial. The rest will be a screen recording so it will be easier to follow along with what to do in iMovie.

To start out, you have to find two clips – one of serious movie and one of a funny one. YouTube is the perfect place to find these. Once you find the video you want to use only the audio of, go to this converter website. It coverts the video into a mp3 format, so it will be only audio. Just paste the link to your video inside the box and click “Convert Video.”

The image below should appear once it is converted. Click “Download” and the mp3 should automatically go into your iTunes library.

Now comes the harder part! To get the video from your other clip, you need to open QuickTime Player. Once you do this, go under File>New Screen Recording.

The box below should pop up. Once you hit the record button, the computer will be recording anything that happens on your screen except for the black “Screen Recording” box. When you’re ready, hit the red record button FIRST.  Then, put your YouTube video into “Full screen” so that is the only thing recorded. Don’t move your mouse or do anything on the computer that will show anything except the video. Sound doesn’t matter because we will be removing the audio from the video later anyway. When you’re done, click the stop button on the “Screen Recording” box.

Now you should have recorded your video! It will appear in the QuickTime Player window. You can play it to make sure it’s acceptable to use. As you can see below, it will record your screen before you start playing the video.

You can trim your video by going to Edit>Trim, as seen below. This will allow you to cut off any extra recording that you don’t need.

You can drag the yellow border to shorten your video as needed. Click Trim when finished.

Once you’re done, we are ready to save the video to your computer so we can access it from iMovie. Go to File>Export.

Any video editing program can be used for this assignment as long as it has simple cutting and reorganizing capabilities.  I used Videopad Video Editor as I prefer it over Windows Movie Maker.  To start, you will find a clip from a serious movie.  The more serious the better.  After picking your clip, find an audio clip from a comedy movie.  The funnier the better.

After you’ve picked your clips, you’ll open your video editing program.  Import the video files and the audio clips.  Make sure you mute the audio from the video clip so just your comedy audio is playing.  Most video programs like videopad separate the video and audio already so you just simply hit “mute.”  After that, go through the video to find where you’d like to start and end at.  You then trim out the extra video so you have a smaller clip.

Once the video is trimmed down to size, you’ll want to watch the video and listen to the audio from the comedy simultaneously so that you can figure out which audio clips work best with the actor of the serious movie.  Then, you will move your audio to the appropriate position and trim out any extra audio you don’t need.

After everything is lined up, watch the video and make sure everything looks and sounds as you’d like it to.  Voila!

Why So Serious?

Why should movies be so serious? Take a clip from a movie that is supposed to be serious and remove the audio.  Then, replace the audio with that from a comedy movie.  Try to line up the speaking from the audio clip with the movements and actions in the video clip.  This creates a hilarious effect that we all enjoy.  Try using well known movies and clips so that we knwo what the actor should be saying.  It makes the clip all the more funny.
