Bad Guy: Not the Billie Eilish Song

Original DS 106 Assignment: Bad Guy Business Card (2 stars)

I was recruited by a local Chicago group known as the Kumbia Kingz to make business cards for them. They are a group of Chicano-Latino members of over 20. Upon meeting, they explained the business cards they needed was to “promote” their group for “music.” This is their group picture. I had a 30 minute meeting with them and gave them a 72 hour time frame to fulfill their request.

Have had news coverage done of them where this photo came from

Step 1: Going to trusty Canva. Open Canva at canva.com

Step 2: Type “business card” into the search and select a template you prefer or it gives you the options to start with a blank one. For this “group” we are going to use main colors from their photo being black, white, and the jorts blue.

Step 3: For this “group” to create a more friendly and less obvious theme, I am using part of the photo above, zooming in on the two front members and create some color blocking on the card.

Step 3: Add font. This is where key words are needed and contact information if possible. For this group, some Old English font fits the group. The typical “Old English” that is found in Microsoft Word is not available, so with a quick Google search, I found which similar ones are available in Canva Free.

Step 4: Creativity. Creativity. Creativity. Using information provided as well as external research allow for best results.

Step 5: Since these are going to be business cards, we can select the “Print Business Cards” button in the right corner and edit the type of paper, finish, and number of cards to fulfill the request.

Step 6: Print cards and send invoice! Whatever they may or may not be up to, as long as your paid is out of your control. Save the file and provide to them for an extra fee.

For the sake of being actually afraid of Chicage Gangs, I did a different group which is actually a music group, Kumbia Kingz, which is not (as far as I know) affiliated with the Lxxxn Kingz from Chicago. Enjoy their song! This one is about not having money, but only love to give.

The Harv’s Island Theme Sounds Very Familiar…

by Thomas Pulsifer

For Audra Young’s 4-star prompt, “Similar Songs,” I was trying to think of what songs I might know that sound just like another song. After struggling to think of an example, I decided to take a break and play the recently-updated Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In the game, I visited the home island of the hippie dog, Harv. The new theme that plays when visiting Harv’s island immediately struck me as familiar, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I looked the tune up on YouTube and searched the comments to see if I was the only one, and thankfully, I wasn’t. Multiple people all claimed the song sounds incredibly similar to “Blackbird” by The Beatles, which is exactly what I was thinking of! So, using some editing magic in Audacity, I’ve compared and overlaid the two songs to show off their similarities. I also used Vegas Pro to edit together a video for the track which, in my opinion, qualifies this for a 5-star rating. I love The Beatles and Animal Crossing, so creating a crossover between the two was a lot of fun.

1980s Song Mashup

For one of this weeks audio assignments, I chose to do Take Any Two Songs (Similar or Not) and Make A Mashup/Remix. I chose to do this assignment because song remixes and mashups are some of my favorite types of songs. I listen to remixes and mashups all the time on Youtube.

In accordance with our DS106 theme, I found two royalty-free 1980s-themed songs on youtube and used a website called rave.dj to mashup the two songs. After entering both links to the videos, the website rendered and completed the mashup. Here is my Twitter link to the website to listen to the mashup.

This assignment was a lot of fun. The fact that a computer program can use AI to perfectly mashup two songs is amazing. The knowledge I gained about computer music programs this assignment, I will remember for a very long time.

What’s that song?!

This assignment is related to our class theme, the 80’s.

Can anyone guess the original 80’s song this is?

How Does A Song Make You Feel?

How does a song make me feel? Well, I’ll tell ya!

One of my favorite songs is written and sang by one of my favorite artists, Hotel California by The Eagles. There is no way, absolutely no way that any living person can go through this song without feeling something. It was first released just before the 80s, and man does it make me want to go back. Imagine listening to this piece of music, or just the Eagles for the matter, right in their prime! How exciting it would have been to see them live in front of you in the 80s.

Of course, the version above, which was created by Emblem3, isn’t the original sound. That is simply because SoundCloud is a free service and I’m sure the Eagles would not appreciate their music up for free. Regardless, it has a similar feel to it. The sound itself features a very long guitar solo towards the end, which is exactly what made me fall in love with it. Right around the 4:00 mark is where the song makes you feel in a different place. Away from reality, almost. In the original, it sounds much better, but hopefully, in this SoundCloud parody, you can get the same feel.

I think this is also why I love the 80s theme so much, and that’s because people who enjoyed the 80s were able to freshly enjoy music like this. And I am very jealous of that. I would have given anything to see this band and many others perform right at their peak. But, for now, I am fine with sitting back and listening to the gold that was 80s rock.

80s Synth Song 2

This assignment I did is called Sound Scapes where you must create a sound piece out of found sounds. For this I used GarageBand on my mac because there are a wide variety of sounds to choose from to use on there, and you can get really creative on it. I used only synth sounds to go along with the 80s theme. It was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed getting to create this song in a methodical way. Take a listen to it below.

It’s a Theme

for my other audio assignment I did Theme song which was to create your own theme song. Rated 4 Stars

I thought this was a fun assignment to do because it kind of describes your personality. I first used the Free sound website to find music and sounds that really describe me. After about an hour of searching I picked out multiple sounds and music. I then used Audacity to edit and cut some things I didn’t want from the sounds and music. Now that I am getting a bit better using audacity I was able to produce a better audio.

80s Synth Song

This assignment I did is called Sound Scapes where you must create a sound piece out of found sounds. So, I decided to use GarageBand on my iPhone because it is very easy to use and you can easily pick from lots of different sounds to create whatever music you want to create. Therefore, I created a song out of synthesizer sounds to go along with the 80s theme because synthesizers were very popular and heavily used in the 80s. So, I thought this would be a great way to relate this assignment to our 80s theme. I really enjoyed this assignment because I got to create, what I consider to be, some really cool music. Overall, this was a fun and fairly easy assignment. I hope you like my 80s Synth Song. Listen to it below, and let me know what you think.

Here is a song I made out of synthesizer sound clips/effects. Enjoy!

The Song’s Bond…..Jane/James Bond

One of this week’s audio assignments tasked us to create a mashup of two songs and combine them to create one new song.

This assignment stuck out to me because the differences in music and audio between male and female secret agent films is one possible discussion topic my group and I thought about for our DS106 radio show called, “Girl Power.”

I thought it would be a really discussion starter for my group’s radio show to combine two secret agent theme songs, one from a female secret agent film and one from a male, and would be a really cool assignment to combine two songs and create a new song for my radio show, “Girl Power.”

the two songs I chose to combine were the James Bond theme song, and a Jane Bond themes song I found on the internet. Jane Bond is the female version of James Bond but sadly James Bond is more heard of than Jane. Since Jane and James bond are counterparts of sorts, I thought combining their theme songs to see what differences we can hear would be interesting.

To make my mashup, I first downloaded both the Jane and James Bond theme songs from youtube to MP3 files. One I had the audio files, I then imported them onto Audacity. Once both songs were on Audacity, I cut down and combined each song to make one new song!

Can you guess which song is the James Bond theme song and which is Jane Bond?

Well you can probably easily guess which is which because the James Bond theme song is much more recognizable, but in case you cant I will fill you in…Jane Bond is first and James Bond is second!

The most interesting part about combining these two songs is the difference that appear in the Jane Bond song versus the James Bond song. The Jane Bond theme song contains much higher pitches and tones, with a much smoother/fluid tempo. Listening to this song gives off the vibe of Jane Bond, an attractive, suave women. Meanwhile, the James Bond theme song contains much lower pitches and tones, with large changes in sounds that add to the drama of the tune. Listening to this song gives off the vibe of James Bond, a suave but strong and rugged man constantly caught in the middle of the action.

I think its really interesting how the musical audio choices used in theme songs even contribute to the possible idea that women secret agents tend to have a stronger emphasis on their looks rather than their capabilities, while the male secret agent theme songs have the drama that contributes to their “bad-ass”-ness.

Song/Scene Mashup

For this assignment I had to take a song and trailer and combine them in a way that seemed fluent. I ended up picking a scene from the Walking Dead, keeping with the theme from my previous assignment. The song I selected was Let The Bodies Hit The Floor, by Drowning Pool. In the scene the community becomes over run by zombies and the main characters have to fight their way through the hundreds of zombies. The song fits perfectly with the scene as hundreds of zombie bodies are hitting the floor and I tried cutting it to fit with the scenes actions. I used OpenShot Video editor to edit the scene and song together and I think it turned out very well. I could actually see this song being played over this scene which is basically what this assignment was all about.
