“Blackmail”: Blurred Image Challenge

Make a quick guess: what is normally recognizable, and is distorted through photography in the image below?

Blur

For this visual assignment, I was instructed to take a recognizable subject and distort an image of it to be unrecognizable. I primarily relied on image blurring during the photo-session, while using a large textbook to deepen the shadow on the left side of the distorted photograph. Additionally, I choose an odd angle for the photo to be taken at, in the hopes of confusing observers regarding the subject in question.

I found this 3.5 point challenge relatively easy, and believed I was fairly successful in distorting my subject material. I could have darkened the lighting more, but wanted to have some lighting present as a clue to observers (And I felt that darkness would have done too much of the work for me in distorting the subject, even before blurring the photo or shifting its angle). View the original subject below!

Can you guess what is in each of these paintings in this picture after I distorted it? I’ll give you the hint that it’s a food that you can eat.

murder mystery, but make it sci-fi

Wadsworth flicked the lights off, filling the house with complete and utter blackness, causing screams of surprise and shock to scatter throughout the drained dinner party.

“So who’s the killer?” asked everyone, all at once and all very loudly.

” Who is it? Tell us!” they continued, giving exactly no time for him to respond.

“FOR CHRISTS SAKE” Wadsworth shouted, which finally blessed the room with silence, “You’re all daft, aren’t you!”

The room, shockingly, remained quiet

He continued “Well. I’ll walk you through it one more time, slowly this time. The first victim, Mr. Boddy, was grazed by a bullet, after which he pretended to be dead. The room was pitch dark, which makes the likelihood of any contact with a specific target very slim. Who could possibly have had the training that would allow them to even make contact with Mr. Boddy?”

All eyes turned to Colonel Mustard, all feet shifted away from him suspiciously. He started t speak, indignantly, but was interrupted by Wadsworth once more.

“The next victim, Mrs. Ho, found stabbed and shoved in a cupboard. The murder had to take place while we were making sure Yvette was okay, and the only person not accounted for at that point was the, supposedly dead, Mr. Boddy. He stumbled into the kitchen, hell-bent on revenge on all of us, forgetting about Mrs. Ho, who has a strict moral code and a very loud scream. He grabbed a knife, then saw her, with her back turned, and had to act quickly. He stabbed her in the back, then shoved her into the cupboard where she remained.”

“But then how did Mr. Boddy die?” asked Professor Plum

“Elementary, my dear Watson!” cried Wadsworth “We discovered Mrs. Ho in the cupboard, completely panicked, and spent a solid, oh, minute and a half standing the kitchen panicking. The most logical answer is that Yvette, who knew from her powerful eavesdropping capabilities that Boddy was sick and tired of Mrs. Ho and her cooking, and had expressed interest in ‘getting rid of her’. Well, immediately after seeing that, Yvette sprinted back to the parlor and grabbed the first weapon she laid eyes on, the lead pipe. She saw Mr. Boddy slip into the bathroom to wash up and hide himself, and followed him in and bludgeoned him to death, then rejoined us before we even NOTICED that she was gone!” Wadsworth paused to take a breath.

“Well what’s next, what happens next??” cried Mrs. Scarlet!

“Hell lady, gimme a minute to breath, I’m not the only one who can deduce things.” After taking an exaggerated minute to breathe, Wadsworth continued. “I’m surprised you were the one to beg me to continue, considering what you and I both know comes next.”

Everyone shuffled away from Mrs. Scarlet, who stood, shocked and appalled.

“And what exactly is that meant to mean, butler?” she asked, emphasizing and venomizing final word.

“Don’t play sly, murderer” Wadsworth said “You killed Yvette because you were madly in love with Mr. Boddy! God knows what you saw in him, likely some twisted form of Stockholm Syndrome.”

“I did no such thing and I am shocked, appalled, and frankly, DISGUSTED that you would accuse me of being in love with that disgusting excuse of a man.” Cried Mrs. Scarlet

“Well its the only thing that fits, and additionally-” He started to speak, but was cut off by the the parlor door being straight up kicked down. Everybody turned and faced it, only to see…

MR. BODDY

Standing behind him were all the rest of the murder victims, although there was something just a little bit off about them.

“MR. BODDY?!” shouted everyone, in eerily perfect unison.

“In the flesh.” Boddy stated, amused.

“But, you were dead, we saw you dead, I know who killed you! I know who killed all of you!” said Wadsworth, stumbling over his words in his confusion.

“Didn’t you ever wonder what I did with all that money I was extorting from you? This house didn’t cost THAT much money.” He paused dramatically before continuing. “Although I love blackmail, my first love is SCIENCE. Ever since I was a boy, I’ve loved science, especially the more back alley experiments, the kind that aren’t necessarily ‘ethical’” he said, exaggerating air quotes around the word ethical. I’ve wanted to conquer death since I was a boy, and I’ve finally done it! The person you killed was actually my twin brother, who I was willing to put in danger because I had finally figured it out. How to bring people back. I brought you all here together because I knew that given the opportunity, you would all lose your you-know-what and kill somebody, giving me the perfect opportunity to test my new technology.”

“You created ZOMBIES” cried everyone, except not in unison, in a clamber of volumes and voices and tones.

“No, I’ve conquered death! And they obey my every beck and call! Watch! GO GET ‘EM BOYS!”

The small army of the undead lurch forward, with surprising speed and agility for what were essentially zombies.

Cue a Scooby Doo-style montage of all the guests being chased in and out of the rooms by the zombies, slowly getting picked off one by one is various comedic cartoony, cartoon violence manners, until they are all gone and the only one left is Mr. Boddy.

“Good job my pets! Together we will rule the world! Rule it! Mwahahahahahahah!”

Mr. Boddy gets so caught up in his evil plan and laughter that he doesn’t notice all his creations surrounding him maliciously. He doesn’t notice until its too late and he too gets got by the zombies. Final scene: freeze frame with all of the victims in a jumping group high five, the screen receding inwards on the scene until its all black. “fin” scrolls across the screen in a pretty cursive font.

This (three and a half star, written) assignment was to write and alternate ending to a film. The film I went with was Clue the Movie, released in 1985, set in the 50s. This was definitely a really interesting take, and the format of the movie made it very conducive to this assignment.

As far as process goes, I watched the movie last night, which has three alternate endings (all three of which are showcased in the watch at home version, but when it was first released in theatres, only 1 of the three was showcased at any given theatre). Thus, I just added another ending onto this movie. I tried to keep with the relatively light-hearted and comedic vibe of the film, but I wanted the ending to be a little bit less serendipitous and happy as each of the three actual endings were. I was writing out who murdered who, and in the midst of doing so, I realized I could really spice it up by completely changing the vibe of the movie. So I did that! Although the zombie thing is kind of out of the blue, so is the entire rest of that movie so it fits!

The other reason I chose to go with zombies was because it kind of made the movie fit into the mild angst vibe of the 80s that a lot of the other films have (while still being funny- at least to me). The attack of the zombies that kill everybody fits with the Night of the Comet angst, and the Many People Die is reminiscent of Heathers. What I liked about this movie was that it was more outright humorous than the other ones. Not to say I didn’t also enjoy the other ones, but this was a nice change of pace. One thing I struggled with on this assignment was actually trying to create something original and creative while still working within the constraints that the first hour and ten minutes of the film set up. The zombie line might be a little bit outside of those constraints, but the film never really revealed what Boddy did with all his blackmail money, and he obviously had a lot of it, so I did fill a plot hole! The other thing I struggled with was trying not to create any new plot holes with my ending, but I think I accomplished that (anybody who has seen the movie, how’d i do?) This was a really fun assignment, especially with this movie, 10/10 recommend!

watch out for zombies, – liz

The Secret of Teddy Graham

The task is to create a short story or poem using 10 random words. Go to random word generator and change it to generate ten words then select “Generate Random Words”. From there, choose an animal and find a way to add that animal along with your ten random words into your short story. Your story can be about anything so feel free to get creative.

Assignment Bank-Writing Assignments

I know this was supposed to be a short story, but I got a little bit carried away… (just a warning: this is very cheesy!)

The Secret of Teddy Graham

“Agent Squirrel, we have a mission for you. The Big Bad Wolf is at it again. He has been threatening to blackmail the executive of Teddy Grahams, but we do not know what information he has. We also do not know why the Big Bad Wolf is threatening to blackmail Mr. Graham. Some of us believe he is just going insane. Well, are you up for your mission, Agent Squirrel?”

“Ready as always!” Sammy A. Squirrel replied before quickly leaving the room. What critical information does the Big Bad Wolf have that Mr. Graham doesn’t want everyone to know?

Agent Squirrel ran through the park and toward the Teddy Graham building. It wasn’t easy being a super secret agent squirrel in the city.

“Squirrel coming through!” he shouted as he ran down the sidewalk. “Watch those hooves!” he exclaimed as he was coming up behind a horse. The horse slowed down and looked on the ground by her legs to see a familiar squirrel approaching her.

“Sammy! What a pleasant surprise seeing you! It’s been a little while, but I can see you’re still the same hothead.” she chuckled.

“Sorry, Naomi. I’m in a rush. I’ll call you later, and we can catch up?”

“Seriously, Squirrel? Why are you in a rush? You’re the most simple, boring, and bland person I know.”

“At least I’m not ugly,” he remarked. Naomi snorted at this comment.

Agent Squirrel finally entered the building and rushed across the room to catch the elevator. There was a young raccoon in the elevator with him. To Sammy’s surprise, the raccoon wept uncontrollably on the ride up to the 100th floor. Every now and then, the raccoon would look over at Sammy and wait for him to ask what was wrong. Sammy sighed and turned to the raccoon.

“Why are you crying?” he asked, even though he didn’t really care. The young raccoon sniffled and wiped his tears from his face.

“I-I-I…” Sammy rolled his eyes. The raccoon continued, “I found what looked like a bearskin rug in the boss’s office.”

Sammy didn’t understand what was so important about that. “And what about it?”

“I think Mr. Graham is not a bear, Mr. …?” The raccoon waited for the squirrel to fill in his name.

“Don’t worry about it. What makes you think that?”

“I saw him in his office, or I’m guessing it was him. It didn’t look anything like a bear. His hands, legs, body, head, you name it were misshapen. He also didn’t have any hair! It was an appalling sight to see.”

“Okay, little raccoon… so if what you’re saying is true… Mr. Teddy Graham isn’t a bear, but a hideous, bald, monstrous creature pretending to be a bear?”

“Umm… yes,” the raccoon whispered, realizing how crazy it sounded. The elevator dinged and the doors opened to the 100th floor.

“Thanks, raccoon. You may not be as insane as you think.” Sammy A. Squirrel said as he left the raccoon in the elevator.

Teddy Graham sat quietly working in his office when Agent Squirrel knocked on his door.

“Sammy! It’s good to see you! Thanks for coming on such short notice.” Mr. Graham stood up from his chair and offered his hand to shake with the agent. Sammy dismissed his gesture with a simple nodd.

“So, as you heard, Wolf–” the executive began to explain, but Sammy put up his paw to quiet him.

“I know all about Wolf. I need to know more about you. What do you want to keep hidden from everyone?” Mr. Graham began to sweat and look around his office nervously.

“What do you mean?” the executive rubbed his head, and his skin seemed to shift a little.

“I was talking to one of your employees in the elevator. He was telling me something about a bearskin rug and a bald monster in your office earlier. I was just wondering what your thoughts are on that.”

“Okay, okay. You got me! I’m not really a bear! I’m not a monster, though,” Mr. Graham slipped off the bearskin to reveal his true self, “I’m human, okay?” Sammy backed away in disbelief.

“Is the Big Bad Wolf actually going to blackmail you, or is that a lie, too?”

“He did threaten to blackmail me, but I think I’m just going to suck it up and tell everyone the truth.”

“That’s a… brave choice. I’m sure the agency can help you find the best way to reveal yourself… or just stay a bear, if that’s what you really want.”

“i just wanted to share my idea of graham crackers shaped like Teddy bears with the world. It shouldn’t matter if I’m a human or an animal.”

Sammy respected Mr. Teddy Graham’s decision and allowed the human to brainstorm the best way to share his news.

Although Agent Squirrel was expecting more crime fighting, secret spy drama on this mission, he sure got some drama. Who knew the idea of eating graham crackers shaped like bears didn’t come from a bear?

About this Story

I know that it seems really long, and it could be too long for a short story, but a lot of it is dialogue. Hopefully, you enjoyed the story! I could have stopped it once I had written all ten of the words and included the animal of my choice, but I just had to complete the story. The story does leave some fun questions unanswered like “what happened to the humans?” and “why Teddy Grahams?” I can honestly say I do not have answers to those questions.

When I was writing this story, I had the secret agent theme in mind. This is not really the best spy story ever, but I do like the plot twist (I hope it wasn’t too weird, though.) I literally just followed my mind when I was writing this story, and I really love how it turned out in the end. It is pretty crazy, but this assignment reminded me that my imagination is still active in my brain. I just need to “walk the dog” as my creative writing teacher told us to do when I was in high school.

This assignment was really fun (I’m probably going to say this about all of the assignments). I did not expect myself to write as much as I did. It was definitely a great way to destress and get creative at the end of a long day. I learned that I should probably write more, even I don’t end up sharing my work with anyone. I also learned that it is hard to stop writing a story once you get one started.

It ends in a flash

In a world where everything has gone dark, the animals start to attack. Even the cute little rabbits and squirrels are bound to rip your face off. What caused the world to end up this way?

All you can remember is a flash of light. When you look at your phone all you see is this photo. You can barely make out what it is. Is this the cause of the end of the world?

For this assignment I had to create a before and after of an apocalyptic scene. My mom has a backyard full of plastic animals so I immediately knew that I wanted to work with them somehow. I first had to decide which of the many creatures that I was going to choose. I decided on the rabbit with the squirrel in the background because they are both fairly docile and innocent creatures so making them evil and dangerous would be interesting,

I then went into my photo editor and only made two changes that made a huge difference. I reddened the eyes and darkened the photo. It is crazy how those two things changed the scene entirely.  I then went into Juxtapose and put the two photos together. The Juxtapose site is made by Knightlab which I have used before for other tools. I had never heard of this one before so I will definitely try to use it again.

For the second half of this assignment I chose to do the blackmail assignment.  I had a hard time deciding what exactly to take the photo of. I then thought about my story line. I already made this apocalyptic world that has gotten darker and wanted to play with the mystery aspect of it. What if nobody knew what had happened? I thought about the difference between dark and light so I decided to take a blurry photo of a set of light switches. I brightened the photo a whole lot and played with contrast. Something I enjoy about this photo is that from certain angles it looks like it is pure white, but depending how you look at it you can see the switches.

I enjoy how these images look like they have nothing in common but because I have created a story they make sense, at least to me. This was a really fun assignment that allowed me to think outside the box and tell a story of my own.

What Metallica Means to Me

This is a little recording about my feelings towards Metallica’s song, Master of Puppets. It’s a pretty well-known song, and just something that’s fun to play loud honestly. It makes my adrenaline start pumping and it generally makes me think of doing something active at a fast pace. I typically listen to this song and some others before sports competitions as they give me a fun little boost to get me in the mood to compete.

Other than just the mental preparedness this song gives me, it also inspires a little bit of resilience and resistance in me. Talking about someone being the master of puppets is talking about the puppeteer being in full control, and with our government and their manipulation and monitoring, I sometimes feel like many people in the public spotlight are just puppets and aren’t very free thinking, which is unfortunate. The “puppeteer” also comes in many shapes, money, greed, blackmail, or other motivating and controlling interests. It’s unfortunate that there is so much control in our world in some ways, in other ways it’s a good thing. Most everything in moderation can be a good thing, the tough line to draw is where does the moderation start and end.

What am I looking at??

The goal of this assignment was to take a picture of something recognizable and make it unrecognizable. This was worth 4 stars.  I used my phone to take a really blurry picture of an object in my living room. Week 3 pt. 2: Blurred Lines

The purpose of this assignment was to take a photo and use lighting and blur to render it unrecognizable. If a picture of a person is taken, that person should look completely different.

Sound Effects Story (3 1/2 stars)

Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds. Another example (by a UMW student): http://ds106.us/wp-content/audio/audio_story.mp3

Story Behind the Story

I absolutely love working with my character and in every other assignment she has been the focus or made an appearance, so in this one, I wanted to mix it up a little.  Below are the different aspects of Stella’s story if you would like to browse them before entering this new scene.

Stella’s Back Story

Explanation of Stain Reins

Stella and Stan

The setting is a dark apartment, more specifically, Stan Reins’, private detective, apartment. It is late, and he has been almost all night trying to crack Stella Vaughn. Papers are scattered across the table and floor, dark circles embed themselves under his eyes, but he is relentless. So far, Reins has yet to find any physical evidence that Stella is harming her clients. She leaves no trace. He has testimonies, suspicions, faked documents, letters, blackmail, the list goes on, but none of it ever ties back to Stells.

It is about 3 in the morning. Stan is hovering over his coffee maker while he stares blankly at the wall. The end spurts are so sudden that he is snapped back to reality. In his slippers and robe, comfy but still so perfectly worn, with a bow symmetrically holding the robe in place, he shuffles back to the table, pulls out his chair and begins flipping through the same papers he has been looking at for the past 7 hours. Nothing. He has nothing. The ticking clock looming over his failure, reminding him that he doesn’t have eternity to nail her to the wall. Reminding him how many hours he has put into this case.

But then….no, he is just tired. There it is again. He hears a fainter clicking. Maybe it is a sign that he needs to give up for the night. He gets up and starts to close shop for the night, but before he can turn the lamp off, he slows his pace. Someone is trying to break into his apartment.

This can’t be Stella. She wouldn’t be this dumb. His focus is so set on Stella walking through that door. This will be his break. She finally lost her touch.

In the midst of his contemplation, the door slams open and someone immediately starts throwing punches. Stan starts fighting back. He has no idea who it is or why he is fighting them. Finally, he throws them off, looks down and sees….George?!

George is the character that Stan has interacted with most. He used to be one of Stella’s clients. Why they hell was he trying to break into his apartment?!

END SCENE

Here is the story behind George breaking into Stan’s apartment. Once Stan has George pinned, George starts to cry, saying that Stella has him all kinds of confused.

Stella wants George on her side so that she can finally figure out what Stan is up to. She knows that George is the weakest link. For the past two weeks, she has gone to visit George at his apartment to show that she “cares” about his wellbeing. In reality she has been manipulating George into turning against Stan, feeding him lies about how certain people will cause a relapse. In the past, when things get out of control, George goes into a frenzy. Stella was counting on some kind of reaction.

Stella always has others do her dirty work.

Work Itself

Narrate the Process

When I finally finished this assignment, I expected it to be at least 5 minutes long. I had completely forgotten that I made a 1:13 sound effect story. I spent so much time finding the right noises, adjusting volumes, layering the sounds correctly, that I expected to have this over the top masterpiece. While I am not at all disappointed in my outcome, I did have this feeling of “that’s it.” when it ended. I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this sound effect story.

I started with the ticking clock. I decided I wanted that to be the base of my story. I made everything else fall into that. I always feel like noir has this race against time feeling. At some point someone will get caught or murdered. It is not a matter of if but when and that is what I wanted to encompass with the clock noise.

I had to physically walk through my apartment to map out what kind of noises I would need and where they would fall. From that it was just a matter of finding the sounds. A lot of time was spent listening and re-listening to what I had made. I couldn’t just look at it and know it would turn out well. At one point I even felt a little like Stan. I made coffee, sat at the kitchen table and poured over my computer trying to find an answer. Luckily, I avoided someone breaking into my apartment.

It was a lot of cutting and softening sounds to get the right story.

Sasha Kellogg vs. The World

Instead of comparing my own life with world events, the “timeline” assignment provided an excellent opportunity to further develop my character Sasha Kellogg. It is easy to announce that a character has lived from 1927 to 1952, but this timeline shows in greater detail what she would have lived through and (with simple addition) how old she would have been. Therefore, this project brings Sasha off the page and into the real world. The events that are unique to Sasha are in bold, and world events are regular. While there are important events in the Kellogg company timeline, they are only in bold during the time Sasha takes control of the company.

  • 1952: present day

Sasha Kellogg is a fictional character, but in my opinion the accuracy of the history and events surrounding a character determine the believability of that character. Additionally, more believable characters make better stories. For instance, if Kellogg’s took a hit during the great depression, there would be less motivation for someone to kill Sasha’s family. Luckily, cereals and grains are staple crops, so Kellogg’s continued to thrive during the depression, giving motivation behind the murderer’s actions. Most of the world events wouldn’t affect Sasha’s daily life (beyond what she reads in the newspapers), but things like the great depression and World War II affected everyone in one way or another. Some dates were hard to find, especially those attached to the Kellogg company timeline, but I have tried to be as specific as possible in my research. At 25, Sasha seems to have lived through a whole lot more than my 21-year-old self (but I suppose that’s a good thing considering what she lived through). Hopefully this timeline makes Sasha more believable in your eyes, because it certainly does in mine.
