Mystery Song

I chose this Mystery Song because it’s pretty popular and I think just about everyone has heard it before. When I played it backwards, I will admit that it’s pretty hard to figure out what it is so I’ll try and make my clues helpful.

My clues are:

The songwriter is a man who likes to play the keys

When you’re listening to this song you might be imagining yourself in a new state up north

This Empire State inspired song will make you change your mind

Mystery Song

This was a 3 Star Assignment

Here’s the original assignment

Guess the Obscure Reverse Song

This is a Reverse Song Quiz.  Can you guess what it is?

This should be a pretty big challenge for most people, since I don’t know anybody personally that has even heard of this artist.  Of course, if you’ve read my other blog post, you know my propensity for obscure music.  I’ll give some serious props to anyone who could guess it.  Here are some hints:

  1. Despite being from Canada, this band is named after a Belgian city.
  2. This song was released 3 months after singer David Gold’s death.
  3. The album won the Juno Award for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year in 2013.

Spoilers:

You guessed it: the song is called Finality by the band Woods of Ypres.  Hear it is normally:

This is another band I hadn’t heard of until recently, which is a shame since they disbanded three years ago after the aforementioned singer’s death.  I decided to use this song because I thought it would be fun to see if anyone else in the world had heard of it, and I like challenging people with my wide music tastes.

Making this was pretty easy.  All I had to do was convert the video to an mp3 using www.youtube-mp3.org.  Then I imported the mp3 file into Audacity, and used the reverse tool.  I cut out a bit of the outro of the song to give the beginning of the reversal a quicker intro.

Here’s the track normally:

Guess That (Backwards) Song! (Reverse Audio Quiz)

This audio assignment is worth 3 stars, bringing my total for audio assignments to 7 stars. The assignment page is here, but I’ll include the directions below as well.

Hey guys this assignment is pretty simple, if you can figure out the answer. Find an audio file and reverse the music. Once you have reversed the music place the file in a blog post and give three hints as to what it is. See who can figure it out first!

I started off by choosing a song. I picked a song that I think a lot of people know. What’s the point of the assignment if nobody can guess the song!

I had the song on a hardrive as an mp3 file, which Audacity already supports, so I didn’t have to do any conversion before loading it into Audacity. The title to the song could be seen in two places in the screenshot I took, so I loaded it into GIMP and quickly blacked out the information before embedding it here.

Aud1

As it turns out, Audacity actually has a built in effect that reverses the selected audio. So the audio editing part of this assignment took about 30 seconds. The only other editing I did was to clip off the silence at the (now) beginning of the song.

Aud2Reversed

I’ve uploaded the reversed song to Soundcloud, but I’ll go ahead and embed it here so you can listen to it without having to leave this page.

Your three hints are

  1. Janis Joplin topped the U.S. singles chart with a cover of the song in 1971 after her death, making the song the second posthumous number-one single in U.S. chart history.
  2. The songwriter, who performs this rendition of the song, is also an actor. He appeared in the Blade movies.
  3. A line that most people will probably recognize is sung in this song. The line is “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.”

Don’t read ahead if you don’t want to know the answer!

I chose this song because Kris Kristofferson is one of my favorite artists. I listen to Kristofferson probably at least four times a month. “To Beat the Devil” is actually my favorite song off of the album, but “Me and Bobby McGee” is a close second. As I said before, I wanted to choose a song that people would be familiar with, but something too recognizable wouldn’t be any fun.

Guess The Backwards Track

Hints:

1: TV Show theme song

2: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, Ross

3: Central Perk

For this audio assignment, worth 3 stars, we had to reverse the music for an audio file. I started by finding the audio clip on YouTube and downloading it. I then uploaded the clip onto Audicity so I could do the editing. friends1

The next step was to select the entire audio file to have the affect applied to it.

friends2

After selecting it all, I went into the effects menu and clicked the reverse option.

After that, the process was done. The audio was reversed and the file was exported to be uploaded onto Soundcloud.

Guess the Backwards Track

For the Reverse Audio Quiz assignment (3 stars), we had to take a song and reverse it. And you, the listener, has to guess what it is! Of course, you get three hints (and this might make it very easy!).

  1. It’s a cover of a Studio Ghibli song
  2. The song plays in the end credits
  3. The movie was released in Japan in 2014

I can’t just leave it at that, though. Hope you guessed it, because I’m giving away a bit of a spoiler! The cover is done by the lovely Lizz on youtube, and it is phenomenal. I chose it over the original partially because I can legally download her cover (there’s a link in the description of the particular video) and because I am elated that the song got a cover!

I’ve been in love with this movie since I first saw it earlier this year. I watched the subbed version, not realizing that it would be released in America this May, and on DVD just a few days ago on October 6th! I’m ecstatic about this movie, and the fact that it was great enough to have a song covered by a great singer and popular cover artist. Oh, I wish I could say what it is without giving away the answer!

If you figure it out, definitely watch it, because it’s such an emotional and warming tale. The magical realism is always a nice touch.

Process:

Very simple. Just download and import the mp3, and then reverse it.

Guess That Song!

Reverse Audio Quiz- 2.5 Stars

Hey guys this assignment is pretty simple, if you can figure out the answer. Find an audio file and reverse the music. Once you have reversed the music place the file in a blog post and give three hints as to what it is. See who can figure it out first!

This looked like a fun assignment and hopefully someone is able to figure out the song and the band!

Hint 1: Band is from Richmond, Virginia

Hint 2: Celtic Indie Rock

Hint 3: Electron_shell_006_carbon

The Work Itself

Telling the Story Behind the Story

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. It is a sweet love song that I think anyone can relate to whether you’re in a relationship or not. The song seems to be about the singers crush and he doesn’t want to be straight forward and say here name, more than likely in case she does not reciprocate his feelings. Rejection is something everyone can understand. I know there have been many times when I had a crush on someone but was too afraid to let them know because I was too afraid that they wouldn’t feel the same way. I have never met a person that has not gone through the same situation.

Narrating the Process

For this assignment, the process is pretty straight forward and simple. I imported the song “Life Less Ordinary” by Carbon Leaf into Audacity. Then I selected Effects –> Reverse and the assignment was completed! One of the easier audio assignments that I have done thus far.

AudioAssignments1332 – Reverse a song to see if anyone can guess which one it is?  Too easy.

The below song is definitely in the theme of Tales From DS106.  In fact, the entire album really is.  The Album, which was released in 1990, was the third studio album from the band.

To play, put your guesses in the comments block below.  The winner will receive absolutely nothing but bragging rights.  Good Luck.

Reverse Audio Quiz!

I got super excited but slightly nervous for this assignment. It sounded super fun, but difficult at the same time. But of course I had to try it!

So the point of this assignment was to pick a familiar song, and reverse the audio so that it plays backwards. This makes it sound totally different, which is super cool! So then, I had to come up with three clues to help the listeners determine what song it is! So fun, right?

So I went through my iTunes library, and found a song that I thought would work really well. Obviously I can’t release what it is, but I will after I get some guesses! Then, I used Jasmine’s tutorial to help me through! It was super simple to follow, and the whole process was really easy! I uploaded the song I chose into Audacity. Then I selected the entire song, and went to “Effects –> Reverse” which did all the work for me! Then I exported it to my computer, and uploaded it to Soundcloud! Then I came up with the three different clues to help you guys figure out the song. On to the quiz!

Here are my three clues for this song:

  1. This song was released in 2009 and was a huge hit all the way through 2010.
  2. The title is two words.
  3. The artist of this song is most known by her stage name.

Alright guys, have fun and comment your guesses!!!

Reverse Audio Quiz

Assignment (3 stars)

For this assignment, we had to find a song and reverse the music, to make the song sound somewhat different, but still similarly enough that people can guess what it is based on 3 clues. Because of copyright fears, I have just uploaded the song directly to WordPress, instead of SoundCloud.

  1. This song was released in February, 2015
  2. This song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100
  3. This song has sold over 100 million copies worldwide

The tune itself is still pretty recognizable, so I assume it is pretty easy to identify what it is.

To complete this assignment, I first found the song on Youtube, and used a Youtube-to-mp3 converter to open it in Audacity. I then used the ‘reverse’ effect under the ‘effects’ menu, and saved and exported the song. I thought that this was an effective song to use for this assignment, as even though it is reversed and sounds like gibberish, it is/was popular enough in mainstream society that it would probably still be recognizable to most people.

Reverse Audio Quiz Assignment

To wrap up audio week with sufficient credits, I present one more audio piece. Based on the Assignment “Reverse Audio Quiz” in the ds106 Assignment Bank, I have taken a portion of audio from The Prisoner and have reversed it. However, I have selectively reversed some of Number Two’s speech, so you need to identify the actual words. It’s fun to play!

I used Audacity for this. As the audio was playing on the Prisoner106 webpage, I recorded the section I wanted directly into Audacity (nice trick to be able to record any audio as it plays), and deleted a little bit of extra music I did not want to include. In audacity, I selected the Reverse Effect to selected portions, making Number Two’s words seem scrambled or foreign. I left Number Six’s voice alone, so he seems to be interacting with the foreign speech.

I uploaded the file to SoundCloud, however it was immediately taken down for copyright violation. Here is what they sent in an email to me:

Hi byzantiumbooks,
Our automatic content protection system has detected that your track:
“Reverse Audio Quiz”
may contain the following copyrighted content:
“”Subject shows great enthusiasm.”” by Original TV Soundtrack, owned by Silva Screen Records.
As a result, your track has been removed from your profile for the time being.

I believe we are experimenting with the audio in an education way that falls under the fair use doctrine, but I’m not going to argue with SoundCloud about it. Silva Screen Records apparently owns the rights to the original soundtracks of the original episodes of The Prisoner. So, I uploaded to a different service, Chirbit, which I had never used before, but just a couple of days ago found out my son has used it to store and share sermons for his church group. The link will take you to the Chirbit website player for the audio clip.
