Social Anxiety Through Simple Sounds

Assignment: Emotion Through Sound
Try to convey a certain emotion, such as fear, stress, sadness, etc. by combing sound effects. They can be human sounds, such as crying with laughter in the background, to maybe express someone’s fears or being embarrassed, or you can get really artsy and try to convey an emotion by sound effects– like loud noises to show intensity, thunder to show fear, or quick, chirpy noises to show happiness. Edit at least 4 sounds together to show an emotion, upload it to soundcloud and then tag it with the appropriate tags.

I really wanted to capture how social anxiety feels through some simple sounds. I’m not sure if it really showed through this audio but hopefully it did! So, in the process of picking sounds, I knew that I wanted one that represented a lot of noise and what other than a crowd! Not just any crowd though, it’s a high school crowd…the worst of them all ? Then I searched sounds that represented a frightened/scared girl or guy. I tried to enhance the audio to increase the POV of the ‘main’ person.

How It Works:
1.) I opened Audacity and created new project
2.) I searched for sounds on freesound.org and found these:
a.) https://freesound.org/people/AderuMoro/sounds/213293/
b.) https://freesound.org/people/kyles/sounds/455704/
3.) I imported them to audacity (file>import)
4.) I then moved and cut to fit the audio as I needed!

(i had uploaded this to sound cloud and was immediately copyright claimed, i obtained all my audio from freesounds.org so i am disputing it, for now, here is the mp3

It had taken me a while to find audio assignments that i had wanted to do that i hadn’t already done. I am extremely busy this week with finals so i tried to choose some easy. After finally getting all of my audio assignments done i went to go back to our weekly assignment page to see if there were any specific tags i had to use, it was then i saw these should have been assignments that will help with our radio assignments. So due to my lack of time, i am just going to have to turn these in, so I am sorry.

I am happy with all of my audio assignments and how they turned out. I enjoyed doing the ones i chose this week as opposed to week 5’s assignments. I especially enjoyed the create a place assignment. I had wanted to add a phone ringing in my clip, but all of the ones coming up were from older phones, nothing like a newer digital ringtone. So i had to record my own. I had my girlfriend call me so i can record a small clip of the ring tone and stagger it. I also had to lower its sound because it was way too loud for my “coffee shop” setting

Moment of Peace

Finally, I chose this 3.5 assignment that said to convey an emotion using sounds.

This assignment said to create an emotion using at least four sounds. I chose to base this more off of my superhero for this class. One of Weather Woman’s favorite things is using her powers to enjoy a nice evening on her porch listening to the birds sing and create wind through her wind chimes and reading a book. I search on freesounds.org and downloaded four different sounds: birds chirping, wind chimes, pages turning, and a swing sounds. Besides the swing sound, I really liked all the other others I used for this assignment. Most of the swing sounds were of squeaky playground swings and weren’t very peaceful. This soundtrack could be Weather Woman’s distress auto for work. I know that the sounds are very peaceful to me and if I close my eyes I can picture her views and can feel myself relax.

Assignment Bank 3 (Week Seven):

Emotions Through Sound

For my final audio contribution to our radio show progress (at least the final one for this week). I decided to create another eerie audio track I can utilize in Jester’s portion of the show. This assignment instructed me to try to convey a certain emotion, such as fear, stress, sadness, etc. by combing sound effects. Now obviously I wanted to convey the emotion fear with regards to Jester! Below is my audio track and how I made it:

To create this scary track:

  1. I went to freesound.org and found all the sound clips I wanted to use for my own track and downloaded them.
  2. Then I opened up Audacity, imported all of them to the file, and began to play with them to achieve my goal.
  3. I opened up a new Audacity file to record my voice as I portrayed Jester and then saved it.
  4. I went back to the original Audacity track and imported my portrayal of Jester to the track
  5. I finished by changing the pitch of Jester’s voice and lining up the sounds so they created one cohesive piece and then I was finished!

Outside

Emotions Through Sound-Tryto convey a certain emotion by combining sound effects

Maybe it’s cliché that I chose to replicate happiness through the sounds of nature. But I thought for a very long time about what sounds make me happy, and they are the sounds of being outdoors. The sounds that bring me closer to the world I’ve always wished was a bigger part of me. The sounds of gentle breezes and rushing water and buzzing insects will always comfort me. When I hear the sound of a dove cooing, I am instantly transported to childhood summers where I laid my back against sun-warmed pavement and let soft breezes glance just slightly off of the surface of my skin.
And the sound of soft breezes as they swirl through leaves, causing them to rattle and shiver, will always be far more impressive than a strong gust of wind. These sounds make me feel warm as if sunlight is kissing my skin, even as I type away at this in a dark room. These are sounds of freedom from obligation and the gift of simplicity. And I do think everyday would be better if it ended with a thunderstorm.
I chose this assignment because it was truly a challenge, no sense alone is truly sufficient to convey emotion. Through sound, emotion would best be recreated using dialogue or at least human sounds. But I wanted to try and do this in a slightly abstract way. Because human emotion is an abstraction in itself. Once again the power of sound has impressed me. When I close my eyes and listen to this track I am instantly relieved, I am transported. These sound effects, low in quality and inexpertly mixed are enough to move me.

I took inspiration from this video which is centered heavily around the sounds of the woods of Georgia. Even though it is a video, I would argue that the sense that is most targeted by this content is hearing.

The Tutorial-

To create this sound clip, I first downloaded sounds from Free Sound.

Once the clips were downloaded, I opened a list of them in a separate clipboard to keep track of each one that I used in order to properly acknowledge credit.

The sound clips used in this project include:

Bansemer: birds morning dove song birds st Augustine april
Lebcraftlp: heavy rain
Soundkrampf: creek
Duck duck pony: foliage rustling
Le-abbaye-noirlac: tree rustling

I then opened the sound clips using audacity and merged them, overlapping some of them to generate a new combination of sounds. I used the fade in and fade out effects in several positions along the sound bits. When the project was finished, I exported it and uploaded it to my SoundCloud account to be published and then embedded in this post.

Peace

For my next Audio Assignment I choose to do Emotions Through Sound. I picked this assignment because I thought it would be a fun and different assignment compared to others that I saw in the assignment bank. I enjoyed trying to think of different sounds to describe the feeling and emotion of peace compared to how it is normally described in words. I choose to use the sounds of rain, thunder, waterfalls, and night time like crickets and things like that because those things to me are peaceful and relaxing. To others it may not be peaceful especially thunder but for me i always feel peaceful during a storm. I know I sleep a lot better during a storm which I sometimes find weird.

Peace

The way I created this assignment was through freesound.org to find the sounds I wanted to use, then I used audacity to combine the sounds together, then I used soundcloud to upload and share the file. I searched for each sound I wanted to use and then clicked on it and hit download. Once I had all four sounds I wanted to use I opened audacity and imported all four of the sounds and played them to make sure I heard what I wanted too. The next step was to export the project and then upload it to soundcloud and then share it in this assignment.

“Birthday Celebration”

For this week, we had to do 10 stars worth of design assignments. I choose to do the assignment http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/emotions-through-sound/ . This assignment was rated 3 ½ stars and it was to create an emotion by combining different sounds. I choose to create the emotion happy and surprise from someone having a birthday celebration. I went to http://freesound.org to search for different sounds: laughter, someone saying happy birthday, party noise, etc. I could not found someone speaking so I had to record myself saying “everybody be quiet he is here” to add to the story of a surprise birthday party. Then I combined the sounds on Audacity. I like the finish emotion and this assignment helped me become better at editing several audios together. I feel that this will help me in the future especially with our radio show collaboration coming up in a week to come!

Finish Product:

Fear of rain

For this assignment I had to edit sounds into audacity to show an emotion. We were required to mash up at least 4 sounds to achieve this. I chose to create someone who has a fear of rain. I started by making the sound of a storm. I used http://freesound.org to find the sound of rain and thunder and mashed them together and moved the timing around for the cracks of thunder. I also made sure this faded in an out for a nice transition and to make sure it didn’t scare the person who was listening!

Then it was time to create my person. I used Freesound.org again to find a person crying (thank you person!) and found the perfect one. After this, I recorded my self sniffling because I couldn’t find something that fit just perfect. I made sure the man faded in nicely for a good transition again and then added my sniffles into his pauses making for a perfect mash up of fearful crying.

Then I found chattering teeth to place into the sound mash up for a small added effect and played with the gain so it wasn’t too overbearing and didn’t take over the piece.

Everything I did in this sound clip I was already familiar with (somewhat at least) but thought it would be handy to keep doing and getting better with (mainly transitions) because editing our radio show could really come in handy. We will need to make sure there are smooth transitions, nice sound effects that feel like they’re happening at the time it is played and not added later, and emotion that tells the story. I feel like I achieved this here. Not to mention I love playing with audacity! (:

Please feel free to give me any opinions on this soundcloud clip below! I hope you enjoy!

Emotions Through Sound

“Try to convey a certain emotion, such as fear, stress, sadness, etc. by combing sound effects. So today my challenge was to create was to try and make people feel things using only sound effects edited together, I have done a post similar to this before in my Creepy Sounds post.

Again, I chose to try and bring out the fear emotion, I need to stop watching scary movies before i go to bed… I chose to do this assignment because I think it’s interesting that just audio can make you feel something so amazing, how just one audio piece won’t make you feel much. However once its collaborated with multiple pieces it can really make you feel like you’re right in the middle of it all.

Take a listen and then i’ll explain how i made it! :)

Emotion through sound.

So I hoped you enjoyed that, and maybe scared you a little??

What’s your favourite genre?

I created and edited this by using multiple sounds effects and editing them on Abode Audition, you can use audacity. Firstly I can to come find some sound effects to use, to do this I looked through YouTube and to find sound effects that would suit my genre.
Jaws theme tune
Thunder
Heavy Breathing
Sea Storm

After downloading and importing these into Adobe Audition, I would put them all into into a multitrack so I could put them all in place and listen to what sounds good in what place, what i found out worked best was to add thunder in the silent parts of the theme tune to create a tense atmosphere.

When I had everything in place the next thing to do was change all the volume levels, this is really simple. So you can either drag the whole yellow line which changed the dB (volume) or if you want to just increase or decrease the volume of a certain part of the audio piece you can just click the yellow line and change the volume however you like.

Emotional Sounds

Hey everybody!

For this week we had a bunch of sound editing fun! Including our radio show. This is my one of two audio assignments. The assignment can be found HERE, it is worth 3.5 stars and it requires us to “Try to convey a certain emotion, such as fear, stress, sadness, etc. by combing sound effects. They can be human sounds, such as crying with laughter in the background, to maybe express someone’s fears or being embarrassed, or you can get really artsy and try to convey an emotion by sound effects– like loud noises to show intensity, thunder to show fear, or quick, chirpy noises to show happiness. Edit at least 4 sounds together to show an emotion, upload it to soundcloud and then tag it with the appropriate tags.”

The Assignment

I decided to do a happy coffee scene gone wrong because I know that “getting a cup at Starbucks” is a huge cultural norm and it’s where people gather to have a good time, work, relax, or just enjoy some coffee in solitude. To me it represents a very basic aspect of humanity: we love to go out and be in an environment where we can feast and interact with other either directly or indirectly. I also did it because it reminded me of the horrible audio sounds I hear on BBC news when they discuss a terrorist attack anywhere in the world. It’s really terrible to hear the peace being destroyed by screams and bombs and death and in that moment, so much emotion is conveyed. I know they say that olfaction is the best mnemonic device, but sound is pretty powerful as well.

The Process

I finally am getting the hang of Audacity more! All sounds came from FreeSound and I watched quiet a few YouTube videos with various tutorials. These are all really handy and I would always suggest for people to browse through YouTube tutorials before opening a new program. I looked at Jon Harnum’s video on making sounds louder and softer. I also looked at KingTutsPro video on how to make your voice sound better. Once I had a better idea of what effects I could use in Audacity, I imported all of my audio files and moved them around, cut them, amplified them, etc in order to make it sound like an actual setting and not just a bunch of random sounds glued together. A quick video of how I started the process is below.
