Audio Giffing

As If we did not have enough assignments, I did the same one twice.
But this did not start as an…

First Foray into Radio

A radio bumper, a short advertisement for the radio station itself, sounds like an ideal first radio assignment.  I downloaded a Creative Commons instrumental track from ccmixter to use as the background, then I downloaded and installed Audacity.  With the help of some googling I was able to record my voice and pull in the instrumental track. A little more googling was needed to find out how to cut pieces out of tracks and re-align them.  I exported the result as a WAV file, only to then see that an MP3 file was required.  When I tried to export as an mp3 file I got a message about a missing LAME file.  So I found where to download the LAME files and downloaded them from a site in .ar (Argentina??), virus scanning at every step of the way.  This worked and eventually I created the mp3 file and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

This is DS106 shrinking the big questions

The working rule for this week’s posts:

We like to see writing with your media, a story…

ds106 Bumper

Finally made a bumper! Im in love with it! I don’t care what anybody has to say about it! lol

I found the music on Jamendo.com from an artist that goes by Bruno Sauty. The song is called
“Randonnée Intergalactique.”

Bumper assignment.

2 star count.

Radio Bumper

For my radio bumper I decided to do the same thing that most people are doing and use the theme song to the twilight zone. I split up the audio track so that I could reduce the levels once my audio recording came on. I also added slight fades to the beginning and end just for effect.

Stars: 2 audio

What was that?

A ds106 radio bumper featuring music and dialogue from the Twilight Zone episode called “The Midnight Sun.” See the tumblr for details on inspiration!

A radio bumper for the ds106 radio! Join the zone

So I made a DS 106 radio bumper. The bumper theme is around the Twilight Zone episode “The Monsters are due on Maple Street”. Watch that episode here if you want to.

Here is my bumper

So what do you guys think? Its kind of a long bumper at 30 seconds, but I feel that it works. Any shorter and I don’t think I could give the ds106 zone’s feel across good enough. To make this I used the ever useful Garage Band application on a mac. I used sevral sources for sound bits in the bumper. The background music is the Twilight Zone theme. I got it from here. The kid’s voice is from the episode “Monsters are due on Maple Street” itself. I got the audio for it from here. The Man talking near the end of the bumper is from the epilogue of the same episode. You can find the audio form it here. The women screaming is from my sister Katharine Thomas. Thanks for the help! Last but not least, the person saying the ds106 radio is me!

So I felt this went pretty good and is a good bumper. Hope that you guys liked it.

This assignment can be found here and is worth 2 stars.

Once You’re In…

…there’s no escape.

I wanted to catch up on assignments for the ds106zone, so I hopped in on this week’s audio work. An easy one to get in was create a radio bumper for the ds106radio channel using a short clip from The Twilight Zone.

I deviated a little from this week’s episodes by watching Five Characters in Search of an Exit, and it struck me as a great parallel for my foray into ds106. I’ve dabbled, I’ve asked questions, and I’ve explored. Now that I’m fully into the fold, I don’t think I can ever leave. The community is fantastic, and even though I haven’t kept up with the “official” class, I feel more creative accomplishment than I have in a long time.

For kicks, I also decided to throw together a very simple Twilight Zone themed radio banner. Maybe I’ll GIF it. Maybe not. If you want to remix it, you can grab the .xcf and have at it.

...there's no getting out.

…there’s no getting out.

Now, I just need to listen to the radio show constantly to see if ScottLo decides to use it…

Bumping The LoDown

What better way to show my appreciation than create a series of radio show bumpers for my teacher.

5 different LoDown bumpers for Scott to use freely on his radio show and blog posts

What is a bumper? It is a short recording that identifies the radio station with signature music or an expression that makes sure the listeners know what they are tuned into.

There’s no mistaking that you know where you are and where you’re tuned into with this set of bumpers.  I used as my foundation a single voice track that I recorded while in the grocery store parking lot with a new iPhone app, Recordium, that I downloaded yesterday at the recommendation of Scott on LoDown episode 12.  Then the real fun began …….

I’ve been experimenting lately with how a soundtrack can drastically change the mood of the media project I’m working with. A few months back I was creating a photo slideshow for a friend, and it was amazing how the flow of images, and our decision to add title text or not, was altered by the choice of music.  I’m able to illustrate that effect at some level with this set of bumpers.  The spoken audio remains the same, just new music underneath.

I had plans to really show this effect by adding a soundtrack that was silly or comedic. But sadly, couldn’t find an audio file in my stock list of jingles and stingers in GarageBand that fit the bill.  I’m still giggling though at finding the Medal Ceremony (LoDown3) and Broadcast News (LoDown 5) clips.  I hope Scott will be just as amused and want to use them for DS106 Audio Week. ;-)  I’d highly recommend anyone who hasn’t worked with soundtracks to try something like this.  You gain a whole new understanding and appreciation for the emotional power of sound.

One last note: I’m sure most of us have run up against the powers that be and have had issues with YouTube or Facebook taking down our videos (or highjacking them by adding product advertisements – grrrrr)  because of Copyright Infringement.  My way of addressing this from the beginning is to use the Vimeo Music Store to locate tracks I can use legally without question. You can even create custom tracks that perfectly fit your videos.  It’s a great resource and there is a lot there. There are free creative commons, $1.99 personal use licenses, and $20+ commercial use licenses available.   I’ll test a tracks suitability and mood by having two windows open on my computer, one playing the slideshow the other playing the music file on Vimeo.  Then when I find something I like, I pay the $1.99 just like on iTunes, and download it. Check it out.

Mashing a DS106 Radio Bumper

Thanks to my fellow DS106 students who made sure they clicked on the “Allow Downloads” button in SoundCloud, I was able to mash this DS106 Radio bumper.  It’s short and sweet, just like this post. AudioAssignments36
