L’Air de Panache

The Air of Panache, the air of confidence and flamboyance. This is the essence of my favorite film of all time, as well as the overused perfume of the concierge of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Like most of Wes Anderson’s work, it is an R-rated picture book come to life. With all the wondrous imagination of a slightly mischievous child and the comedic caliber of a well-seasoned cynic, this film is a masterpiece. Even without commentary or plot this film is like watching a beautiful painting come to life, the colors are brilliant, inundating every corner of the screen. The music is original, big band soundtrack is the perfect complement to the beautiful imagery. To attempt to give a minimalist summary of a Wes Anderson film is foolish. He has created entire films that are far more dependent on their color schemes and small visual details than they are on their plots.

The icons I chose are still quite detailed for minimalist designs, all of these images came from The Noun Project. The first icon is a lobby boy, created by Vladmir Belochkin. It represents the beginning of the film when the main character Zero becomes and fulfills his role as the Lobby Boy. The lovable character of great integrity and romanticism is usually found in his archetypal bright purple uniform decorated with small, bright gold buttons and a structured round cap with “Lobby Boy” stamped glaringly across the front.

The second icon is a bottle of poison representing the murder of Madame D. which M. Gustave is then accused of. I chose the most detailed and vintage bottle of poison,  created by Chris Homan, that could be found on The Noun Project. With this murder, the arrest of M. Gustave initiates the great adventure of the film. The next two icons are both creations of Lea Lafleur.   The first is representative of the small cake from Mendl’s; in which a small tool was embedded to aid M. Gustave and his band of thugs escape from prison to begin his quest for vindication. The next icon is the Grand Budapest Hotel itself, showing the return to the Hotel where Zero and M. Gustave find the evidence they need to clear their names and which also eventually results in Zero becoming the proprietor of the wonderful hotel.
I was compelled to choose this project mostly because I love film and minimalism, and I knew that attempting to describe a Wes Anderson film through minimalist design would be quite a challenge. Ultimately I think the design is successful, it remained simple without losing the intricacy that is so typical of Anderson. I might even keep this design for myself.

The Tutorial-

This was a very simple project to create, although it was quite challenging to decide upon the four icons that I would use to describe the entirety of the film. I used The Noun Project, downloaded my selected images and then pasted them into a PowerPoint, arranging them in sequence on a light blue background. When I had the icons arranged the way I liked, I simply took a screenshot of the image and cropped it to get my final product.

One Story / Four Icons

Right away, this assignment stood out to me because it looked fun. I had a good time searching through icons on The Noun Project and trying to decide which ones would best represent the story I was thinking of. In the end, I picked icons more that represented some of the main characters, rather than the events of the story.

Can you guess what story these four icons refer to?

Hint: It’s a book series.

Guidelines for this assignment can be found here.

It’s the third…or fourth day of the week. I need coffee.

Today’s design assignment is something I found to be quite cool…but it’s also a game. A game without a prize…sorry.

GUESS

Today’s assignment is called “Four Icons/One Story” and I immediately knew what movie I was going to do. Like always, I used PicMonkey for editing and found the icons via Google. Now it’s your turn; what movie can you guess from the icons?

Hint; It’s got a cat.

2 Hours to 4 Icons

Reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons, four of them. Write your blog post up but do not give away the answer!

I clicked on this week’s suggested assignments because it was late and I needed inspiration. When I saw the One Story/Four Icons assignment, for 3.5 stars, I was so excited to complete it. I had already had experience working with The Noun Project for a previous design assignment and I liked the simplicity and ease the logos afforded my designs. I also love movies, and I wanted to do the movie poster assignment, but was too intimidated. I figured this one would challenge me in the same way creatively, but be easier to execute. I chose my movie (it is one of my favorites) and this is how I created my movie reduction. I posted the finished design on Twitter so that I could see responses of what movie people thought it was. If you want to see the movie revealed, click here.

First think of a movie or story you know well and can reduce down to just four icons. Got it? Good. Now go to The Noun Project and search for and download the icons you want. Keep in mind that the logos should have the same style and line thickness so that they look like they belong together.

My first step was actually to think through my designs and sketch them out. I recommend doing this so there is a vision and you know exactly what to search for. At this step, I had not yet decided what movie to do but these drawings are for two different movies.

Once I finally decided my movie, I searched for lightning bolt.

Then click download > PNG > creative commons. If you don’t have an account it will ask you to create one. Making an account is free and allows you to download all these logos for free through creative commons as long as you give credit to the artist.

I then searched for and downloaded three more icons, and used the same downloading process as the first one.

I searched for a broom, an owl, and an envelope.

I’m sure by now most of you know what movie I’m describing. I know it’s obvious but it’s one of my favorite movies/stories of al time so just bear with me.

Then, open Powerpoint and insert all the logos. Do them each one at a time.

After inserting the logo, crop the name out by selecting format picture > crop. A border will appear around the photo. Click and drag the border until the name is outside of it, then select crop again.

Then insert and crop the remaining logos using the steps above.

Then click and drag logos around the screen and resize them until it looks the way you want.

I wanted the broom to angle the other way, so I selected format picture > rotate > flip horizontal.

Then I made sure it was in the order I wanted with correct spacing, and I grouped all the logos together. Click and drag over the whole slide so that all the logos are selected. Next, right click and select grouping > group.

The last step is to save as a PNG or JPEG. Now your four icon movie can be uploaded anywhere!

One Story, Four Icons

This was my absolute favorite movie growing up. I used a website called Fotor to create the collage and chose 4 very distinct images from the film.  I hope you all can deduce from my clues what this movie is!

4 Icon story

I decided to do the Four Icons/One Story project worth 3 1/2 stars. Realistically I decided to take on this project because I saw they included the Noun Project and I really think they have awesome stuff on that site. (I even wrote an article on the Noun Project for work.) I was really excited to try and come up with something cool that I could create with a movie. Now I know we are not supposed to give away the movie we picked and I won’t but know it took me forever to come up with one that I could simplify into just four icons and still be happy with it.

Since I pulled icons from the Noun Project I have left their attribution in small print inside my design. That is because the Noun Project asks you to purchase a one time fee for any icons you wish to use that does not require accreditation. (The fee going to the icon creator.) Since I was not looking to use any of these icons again I decided to use the free version and maintain accreditation. (I know technically I could’ve just cropped it out but I wanted to honor the Creative Commons license.)

I brought all of the icons into a blank photoshop file and arranged them in the order that I thought would best convey the story. I tried out several different icons for the same concept to see what looked most aesthetically pleasing, mostly based off the clearness of certain icons or the line art.

Any guesses what it is?

4 icon challenge larger

Four icons, one movie.

This assignment was all about picking four icons and trying to describe a movie. Can you guess what movie this is? Put your guesses in the comments below!

Stars: 3.5

One story, four icons

I did the one story, four icons assignment worth 3.5 stars. I really liked this assignment because it made me think outside the movie and break down a movie I love into four themes or focuses. I took four things that were central to the story of this movie and found icons for it which hopefully won’t be too hard for someone to guess.

Take a guess in the comments section on what you think the movie might be!

Can you name the movie?

This is Agent Nice Guy’s favorite movie (hint hint) because it helps her release stress at the end of the day. The images also depict how her last Thursday had ended (from previous sound effect story–major hint!).

This assignment was fairly easy to do–I found icons from Google Images that were relevant to the movie and used paint as a reliable imaging software to adjust the sizes of each images. Although I was not really sure which icons to choose at first, I later selected ones that can serve as general representations of the movie. VoilĂ !

One Story Four Emojis

So I read this assignment brief and it seemed really easy to do but when it came down to it I found it really difficult, to sum up, the main elements of the story into four icons.

Until I had the brainwave of summing up a story using four emojis. So here goes. I will leave the answers at the bottom of the post.

Guess this Film:

I showed this to a couple of people and they didn’t get it straight away, so I’m going to try again but with a different film, and make it more obvious.

screen-shot-2017-01-16-at-16-34-16

This one more people understood than the last.

This last one is actually an American TV Show:

Overall I really liked this take on the four icons assignment as it has an updated take on it. I was also interesting to see people reactions to me explaining to them I’m using emojis they either love it or hate it and it seems to be a very polarising topic for people.

I think it would be cool to see other peoples four emoji stories and as a game to play on a phone with someone else would be quite fun.
