Four images. One movie. Can you guess which movie it is?
This might be hard so here is a hint: It’s an older children’s movie.

This assignment had me take a movie, reduce it down to its basic elements, and make it into four icons that tell the story. I chose a well-known movie, however I didn’t want to make it too obvious as to what it is, so I tried to choose icons that described the movie but didn’t give it away. I found some icons that were labeled for reuse and created the story in Photoshop. Can you guess which movie it is?
Long ago, the four icons lived together in harmony…..

Stars: 3
Process: After coming up with which movie I wanted to simplify, I went straight to Google Images. I searched around, downloading 10 or so images that could potentially work, before moving to Photoshop. From there, I experimented with combinations that made sense and settled on the present. No image editing (other than resizing of original images and ensuring the backgrounds were white as opposed to gray or striped) was done.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to figure out what story I’m talking about given these four images. (No, that’s not a hint.)
This one should be pretty easy, guys. I have faith in you.
If you can’t figure it out, look here for the answer.
This was the three-star “Four Icons, One Story” design assignment. I picked the story because it’s one of my favorites (hint hint). Icons I got from the Noun Project, and since the credits are kinda hard to see:
Ring by Luboš Volkov from the Noun Project
Curved path by Allie Tate from the Noun Project
Mountain by Florent from the Noun Project
Eye by Pham Thi Dieu Linh from the Noun Project
Honestly, once I knew what story I wanted to do, thinking of the images was pretty easy. I just had to pick them off of the Noun Project, and that was more difficult. There are so many images to choose from. Once I had picked the pictures I thought were the best, I put them all together in Paint and lined them up. I originally had the mountain first, but that was chronologically inaccurate so I took went back in and re-did it. Silly me.
Have fun guessing!
The link to the full assignment is listed here. The goal of this assignment is to reduce any story, movie, or event to four symbols to help readers identify it.
This week has led to many assignments and daily creates based on movies and TV shows and I am loving it!!!
For this assignment, I decided to base it on another one of my all time favorite TV shows.
Before reading along, see if you can guess the show from the images listed. I will give a few clues before posting a link to the answer.
The needle and the hospital are a huge give away to the possible theme or setting of the show. There also is a reason that I have used both an anatomical heart and a cartoon heart drawing. Think about it.
Further clues would be that the main character’s name is part of the title, there is a lot of different romances throughout the show, the hospital is obviously the setting for the show.
If you have made a guess or have given up, you can find the answer to this puzzle here.
To make this image, I used PicMonkey.
There is a number of different layouts to choose from for any number of pictures you want. If you scroll through the left sidebar, you can glance at all the layouts listed or create your own.
You are then able to scan over the dotted boxes to upload any image or choose from the samples they have. For any image, you can hit the edit function to perfect the image.
Once you have added all the images, you can hit the share or save option along the top bar.
My final product is listed here:
For this design assignment, I decided to choose One Story/Four Icons. It is a total of three stars and challenges you to create a picture with four icons that represent a movie you choose. Thinking of the right icons for my post was a little challenging, but I figured it out! I really like assignments like this that engage others to participate. I also am very intrigued by the mystery and suspense it can create. Trying to guess a movie with very few hints can also be extremely difficult, but please leave your guesses below!
I chose this specific movie for this assignment because it is a classic and one of my favorites. I love movies that teach lessons and give hope. Being able and open to learn and grow as a person is something I cherish and admire in other people. Sometimes life does not always go the way that we plan but it should not be an excuse to give up or to quit. Pushing through the difficult times, whatever they may be, can help a person grow and learn to keep moving on.
Since the post specifically says that you all are to guess with just the hints given as icons, I’ll leave that part for you!
For this assignment, I utilized the site Canva to create my icon montage. My first step was to choose a blank white canvas and then choose a grid that was split into four equal parts.
After I chose my layout, I went on a search for icons. Some of which are easily accessed on the “elements” tab above. I uploaded the icons I needed from my computer and inserted them onto the layout.
After that, I resized all of the images to fit in their grid spots:
After this, I clicked download and saved the image to my computer as a (JPG) file.
The overall process was very simple to understand. The website made it very clear on what was available. I highly recommend this website going forward. It was very easy to use and helpful.
Please do not forget to leave your guesses below! Look forward to hearing from you all.
The goal of this design project was to reduce a movie, story, or event into its basic elements, then take those visuals and reduce them further to simple icons – four of them. I chose this assignment because it is something that I could see myself having my students do when they have completed a book. The idea of this, while not exactly asking the participant to find the main idea of a story, is still asking that you reduce the story into only four icons, which requires some thoughtfulness and definitely a strong understanding of the key elements of the story. For this design assignment, I was asked not to tell my readers what story or movie I am representing through icons, but if I were to do this in my classroom I think I would have the kids explain their thought process behind each of the four icons that they choose.
To complete this assignment I used icons from The Noun Project. I had a good time looking through the plethora of icons available for use, and trying to decide which ones best fit my needs. Once I found the icons that I wanted to use, I had to decide if I wanted to download them as a PNG or as an SVG, which first required that I learn what those two things meant. After some quick reading and some trial and error I found that for my purposes the easiest thing for me to do was download the pictures as PNG. I had a little difficulty figuring out the best way to put the four icons together so they were grouped as one picture, but I ended up just pasting the pictures into a word document, then copying and pasting them all together into paint so that I could manipulate them the way I wanted and save them together as one picture. I ran into a couple snags along the way with finding pictures that I could use without giving credit and finding pictures that I could resize without ruining the image, but for the most part it was a pretty straight forward assignment and I think it will be a fun one for my kids to try as well.
I chose to turn a new-ish book that I read last summer into a series of icons. Can you guess what book it is?
This post is dedicated to the Design Assignment “4 Icons/1 Movie”. I picked this one because I love movies probably just as much as I love music; I have seen quite a few. As I was trying to come up with a movie, though, I was getting stumped. It is as if I forgot about every movie I had ever seen or when I would come up with a movie I couldn’t think of the icons to use. I finally came up with the perfect movie along with the perfect icons. Surprisingly, I had actually not seen this movie until as of last summer, which blew my boyfriends mind, so he made me watch it. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite movie, but it is definitely a classic.
This movie was was made in 1994 and the main actor is a very famous man in other movies such as The Polar Express, The Green Mile, Cast Away, and so many more. The 4 icons I chose were a suitcase, a man running, a bench, and a chocolate bar, which are all key elements to the movie that I think of immediately.
I used The Noun Project website to get all of my icons. Then, I used BeFunky to create a collage of the icons.

One Story, Four Icons, A DS106 Design Assignment. Take four symbols or icons to represent a film. These four symbols here should remind you of a memorable film. What do you think it is? Click here to find out. Just kidding, this is the answer.
So, when I saw this assignment, I knew exactly what movie I would pick and I knew for sure the first icon. I will leave it at that so that I don’t ruin the fun of guessing. Probably anyone who has seen the movie will recognize it, but I will provide a few additional clues… First of all, the boxer should have bare knuckles. Second, the gun should say the name of a very specific highly recognizable gun manufacturer and a rather large caliber on the side. It is not an old movie really, unless you are really young… then you might consider it old. This assignment was really fun; it was interesting to boil down the entire movie to 4 icons. There were a couple others I thought about for a minute, but I think these isolated the essence of the movie. To anyone that happens by to actually guess, Good Luck! If you show up and absolutely cannot figure it out, the answer is here.
