Using Recycled Media

I used seven images and an audio clip to create this video. I used gimp to edit the photo of the hand over the other six images. The audio clip I edited in audacity to clip out the sections that I wanted. I then used audacity to speed on up and slow the other one down.

Recycle the Media

My story for this is people walking in the streets and sidewalks to get to the city to ride horses. I used the street sounds and 6 pictures that represented walking through the streets to get to the end destination. I used Windows Movie Maker to help combine the whole video.

Recycled Media turned into a story

To complete my 7 stars I completed the Recycle the media assignment. I went onto the ds106 recycle bin and gathered 7 items. I took 5 pictures and saved the images. And downloaded 2 sound audio clips onto WMM. I uploaded all 7 items onto WMM and created my video.

The story behind this video is a couple decides to take a walk on a cloudy day to a path they discovered that they have never been to. They go follow the path and find leaves and and branches, nothing out of the ordinary, when all of the sudden they come upon an elephant. This wihle time they ahve been hearing forest sounds with birds, so this was a total surprise to them when they found the elephant. They were so intrigued at this point they continued on their path to the end where they ended at a stream. The two sat down and enjoyed their new secret spot they discovered that day.

Recycle Mania

Recycle this media : Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This week we had to use recycled media from other ds106ers.  The recycle media had a total of about 150 different pictures, videos, and sound clips.  I was originally expecting there to be a lot more of recycled media, and a wider variety.  I was kind of dissapointed by how little audio clips they had that I ended up with a video made of pictures with a sound clip at the end.  I really like the way I used the media to create a story out of it.  I feel like it almost prepared me for my final project in a way of using separate media files and to create one story line.  By now, I’m basically a pro at audacity and iMovie, just kidding! For this assignment I wanted to choose the media first and then create a story line.  I thought this way I would have to be more creative with is, and somehow connect all of the pictures and sound clip.  I think that if I would have come up with a story before I found the media it probably wouldn’t have allowed for my creativity to flow.  For the movie, I decided to add subtitles to make it easier to follow the story line.  I really liked the idea of using media from other people to make something of my own.

Here is my end result:

The recycled media can be found here.

Recycle This

Recycling is a wonderful thing, why let those unused clips and pics rot in a media land fill when we can rework and reuse them? For this assignment we took a look in the recycling bin and made a video story using those items.

Winter Is Coming is a short story created from recycled material which tells a story of a summer vacation hot spot which dies when winter comes. The line was taken from The Game of Thrones, which to them is a very scary thing since who knows how long winter will last. I got a little better with Premier, figured out transitions and how to make it black and white.

3 Stars: Recycling’s Good for the Planet

So, to start off this week, I made a

I have to say, I was disappointed by the lack of audio choices.  I really thought there’d be a wider selection of media, so I was kind of shoehorned into make a kind of sound story along with my pictures.  I took a few sounds from freesounds.org, but the wind swishing was from the recycled media.

Our story begins with our “hero” walking down a path into the woods where he encounters many different bushes.  A leaf falls, and he stand briefly to stare at it and contemplate life.  From there he runs into a rambunctious cat.  Once he emerges from the woods he witnesses a car accident and quickly ran to get help.

I threw all of my images and sounds into windows movie maker and editted it from there with a few transitions.  This was kind of a complicated assignment.  I was glad that there were so many nature pictures because that ended up going with my narrative.

3/7 Stars down!

Recycle Remash

From the 3-star Recycle the Media assignment: During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.

Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

For my first part of media I wanted to tell a story with a picture.  Cropping pictures into other pictures to see if that changes the idea of an image.  I just grabbed any images that struck my fancy, and most of them were abstract or nostalgic.  The kind of story I made was about a garbage monster who is seeing this rare event where milk falls from the sky into a hole in the ground.  Rumor has it that this milk flows into a reservoir at the University of Mary Washington where they process the milk and use it for as long as it lasts saving the school much money. (Oscar link,  milk link, scene link)

The second creation I wanted to do was an audio creation (because I love audio) and was going to challenge myself with another five-sound story.  I like the idea of layering sounds, but a lot of the sounds were shorter in length than I anticipated so that brought about a whole new set of challenges that I was happy to try out. (street sounds, sneeze, scrap yeah yeah, ahh, and swish)  This is a mini story of a sped up journey for someone who is moving and they took the train, drove a little by car near the coast, and settled into the city.  The sneezes at the beginning and end mark the start and end of the journey and that even though location changes it doesn’t mean that the person themselves change.  The more and more I listened to it the more and more it seemed haphazard and yet it still made sense.  I think that in order to change this it needed to either be reordered or have things fade into each other a little more effectively.  The sounds currently sound like layers of sounds instead of a story.

Recycle the Media

After the posting of over 150 pieces of unused media we are tasked to use at least 7 piece and create a story. After scouring the site I came up with the below concept. I used Sony Vegas for all of the editing Visual and Audio. Its a simple concept showing what happens in the morning when you wake up.

“ mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content”

I got my media from here to create Serene Scenes of Fredericksburg:

When looking through to recycled media I tried to find a theme, and the most obvious one to me was scenes of Fredericksburg. Then I found the sound clip of birds chirping and thought that would fit well in a video with the scenes. I was surprised at how well these random pieces fit together. To me Fredericksburg is a beautiful, relaxing city, that has a diverse range of places and this video portrays that. Frederickburg has a section for anything you would like to do; the old downtown area where you and walk and enjoy the shops during the day and got out to the bars at night, Central Park for any shopping or entertainment need to could possibly have, The river for a serene outdoorsy day, Campus for classes and meeting with friends… The two or three prime weeks of Fall when all the trees are bright orange, yellow and red are what drew me to this school and city and I’ve enjoyed it every year. I’ll be sad to leave Fredericksburg next year.. maybe I’ll get a job here and stay!

I made this video by downloading pictures from the website above.. drag and dropping them into a new project in iMovie, adding the background sound clip, adding a title slide and captions and uploading it to YouTube!

Remember to Recycle

Have we had a real mandatory assignment lately? I can’t even remember! But lucky us(DS106 students) this assignment could count towards mash-up stars, woohoo! I don’t need all the stars, but let’s see what I can whip up when I Recycle The Media.

“Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video). What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?”

Where can I find recycled media?! In the Recycle Bin of course! Earlier in the semester we were asked to drop 4 pieces of unused media into the bin. Well it really adds up when you have 2 whole sections of students dropping in media! However, it was hard for me to find something to tell a story with. I even watched other students examples and still wasn’t getting that feel, ya know? So I chugged along and came up with the idea of my trip to the zoo. But then I realized, “Well, I have tons of images of animals, but I don’t have different types of media besides that.” Then I stumbled upon these:

and
BBQ

and I had an eerie, yet awesome story that popped into my mind. There was one other photo I had in mind, but that would give away the twist, but anyways, here is the story:

Okay, this may seem cruel, or disgusting, or just whatever it is against your morals…but I thought it was a funny little story to tell with the recycled media I had to work with. The video was a little quiet without having the music from the awesome Rick Astley and Eduard Khil. Does this make me a troll now? I sure hope not!
