Recycle the media

This is mashup assignment 746, “Recycle the Media” is it worth 3 stars. The assignment read:

“During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.
Your task for this assignment is to mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, imahe and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?”

This assignment was kind of difficult. There wasn’t as much recycled media as I thought there would be, but I made it work with what I had. I created a short (extremely short) story about walking on a beach and forgetting my sunglasses. I walked back to the hotel (alone) where the Joker was waiting for me.

First, I downloaded all of the media I wanted to use for my story. I copied all 9 pieces (3 audio, 6 photos) to Windows Movie maker. (The Joker was supposed to be a GIF but he wasn’t being very cooperative.) I played around with the timing of the photos and audio and then I added a caption to each photo so you would have some idea what is happening. I hope you enjoy it! I know it isn’t the most entertaining thing you’ve ever watched.

Always Recycle

Recycled media to make a new story

http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO has a pool of recycled media from unused art of all ds106ers (and beyond)

I found this audio in the pool or recycled media. I decided to theme my project using it. I imagined creating a visual of a walk outside. With the birds tweeting in the background, I began to look through the media. I found many photos of the outdoors. I narrowed them down to images that would be on this “walk I was creating. By the end I had many different ones that show the progression from the person’s home, through the town, to a river. (I guess it could very well be a walk here in Fredericksburg).

I created this film in Imovie. After choosing all the photography I want to use for my story, I then organized it to tell a story. Although the video is a collection of snap shots, the way I put them together looks like a logical walk. After placing the photos, I added the bird noises and some transitions. The photo’s zoom in as you watch the film which I liked because it added a movement to the film.

Recycle the Media

For the Recycle the Media assignment, my story is of a typical UMW student. Most likely the student is female. So I choose a picture of a bookcase of heels (lucky duck). Then I choose the stair case because most houses around here are indeed two stories. I decided that most UMW students love coffee, thus the picture of Mc Steamy. Then I choose this beautiful picture of leaves and cars. I got a picture of Chandler from the site because I live close to it (as do a lot of students). I put in the picture of nail polish for the fashionable students here who take time to paint their nails. Then, I choose the house where this student “lives”.

All sounds are from Freesound. The sounds are of “hmm”, as in “which shoes today?”. The nest one is of heels click clacking. Then it is of a coffee pot making coffee. The next is leaves crunching under feet. Freesound also has a sound of pages being flipped in a binder, which fits perfectly. Then I had people laughing for the nail polish, like the student was painting her nails in a big group of girls. Then I have snoring to signify sleeping.

The story goes as follows:

Lucy is a UMW student who lives of campus. She wakes up in the morning and picks her shoes from a bookcase of heels. She walks down the beautiful staircase every morning to go get her coffee. She walks to campus everyday because she lives off campus and is ecofriendly. She is a business administration major, so she spends her day in Chandler in lectures and reading her books. She goes back home in the evening and paints her nails with her roommates. Then, she goes to sleep in her quaint little house.

Boom.

Recycling

The assignment Recycle that Media involves taking at least 7 different previously unused works from other ds106ers and create it into a whole new story out of it! I first went through all of the 153 items to see what was available to use. My first thought was “what the????”. I had no idea how to even start to pick random items and mesh them together. I then came across a cat file. Of course, since it involved animals I just saved it to my desktop. I then saw a few other nature like pictures and thought maybe I could do a story of how a cat travels everyday. Having 3 cats of my own I know they do not stay close to home if they are allowed outdoors. I also found a bird audio that worked perfectly with my outdoor story. I then found a picture of a dog and decided to include that too.

I made a bit of an adjustment on the audio. I didn’t really like just the birds playing throughout the whole story so in the end I added a dog barking (had to adjust the pitch for the smaller dog) and a cat hissing. I had these files left over from when I did the 5 sound story.

Other than a minor adjustment in the audio, the rest was a breeze. I wanted an interesting title clip so I used a weird transition for the title words. I didn’t want any other captions besides the title slide and a bit of an introduction to Sadie the cat. I feel cats prefer silence on their daily adventures anyways (hint the hissing when a dog interrupts the bird noises).

The Importance of friends

Recycle the Media

What kind of recycled story can you make out if this cast off media.”

I used Recycle the Media as part of my 7 star worth of assignments. For this assignment I first went to the minus.com  and selected 10 different pieces of recycled media. I wanted to make a story out of images and audio, therefore I chose the audio and video formats.

Since friendship provides orientation in our life, life surrounded with good friends is a life in the heaven. Therefore, the video I created is about the importance of true friend in our life. After selected the images and audio, I used Windows live movie maker for editing them. I used subtitles for telling the story behind the images. The background music was called lantern_fest ; I chose this sound effect because it was going well with the images I chose.

The importance of true Friends:

I really enjoyed creating this assignment, since it was very fun to do. Secondly, it was good to see other students recycled medias .

This is a 3 star assignment

Before working on this assignment I looked at a previously done assignment called:

Cat? A ds106 Recycled Media Assignment: This assignment was really well done.  I like how it started and ended with the cat.  I also like how this short video has a scary theme to it as you are wondering what happened to the cat.  The recycled media was used very well and the sounds went well with what was happening during the video.  I also really liked how it zoomed in on the cat at the very end.

After looking through all the recycled media in the recycling bin, I decided to create a story with photos about a nature walk that I’m taking.  For this I took 6 pictures and 2 sounds from the recycling bin that I thought related best to nature and things you would see on a nature walk.  The story I created with recycled media represents me taking a nature walk, and the things I see while walking around outside.  The starting image is of a house.  This represents me leaving my house to start my day with a nature walk.  The sound in the background for most of the movie is called forest birds.  This is the sound represents the birds I hear while outside on my walk.  The next picture shows me turning a corner and walking by some pretty fall trees.  The following picture shows me walking down the stairs into the forest where there is nature.  The next picture shows a leaf I found on my nature walk.  Then I look up a the nice blue sky and see some hot air balloons.  The last sound that is at the very end of this video is called swish, which represents the sound of the hot air balloons.  That there ends my nature walk.  I wish that there was a sound for footsteps in the recycling bin that sound like I’m actually walking.  I really enjoyed this assignment and using recycled media for my story.  I like how I can reuse what other people do not end up needing.

The DS106 Basement

Recycle The Media — MISSION: DS106 using media from http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types.

Looking at the ds106 phonar recycle bin my eye was caught by a lot of bars, and I started thinking of being in a cage or going through a series of bars. I started just downloading a bunch of files, listening to the audio. The audio from the bit-fall-mona .mp4 video sounded ominous so I grabbed the movie.
When I started up imovie I veered away from the bars to start on the beach. I like beaches and have occasionally recorded sounds on the beach, there was a nice swish in the bin.
The scream, I imported into garageband, trimmed off the fire and added a female to male voice transformer.
This was to go with the face, trimmed off the icon, added some noise in Fireworks. I originally exported as a transparent png to overlay in imovie but could not get it looking right quickly.
The wave sound fades out as the bit-fall-mona sound fades in. There is the odd filter and only one transition.
So take a trip to the DS106 basement, where old gifs are jammed in dusty boxes.

Cat? A ds106 Recycled Media Assignment

Arggh, since my hippie hosted main blog is down for the count tonight, I shall hang my blog post here. In prepping the work for next week’s ds106 section on Remix, I needed/wanted to do one of the assignments we just added- Recycle the Media in which we are charged with making a mashup from the content that students shared a few weeks back- their left over, unused bits of media from previous assignments. We loaded over 150 of these to a site on minus.com to make available for download and mixing up.

So without much more ado, my story about a cat:

This story was driven by the primarily the “flames and woman’s scream sound” which lef me to the grill one, and from there, well. this.

So we have a cat who is missing. Dad just tries to say “it’s ok” (he does not care about the cat). The little kid passes the blame. And now there is meat sizzling on the barbecue (insert wilhlem scream). What about that cat? Where is it?

The media used included:

I replicated the short “Ahh” sounds 3 times by option click dragging the audio track. I also copied and pasted 3 more times the short Shining Clip. From there it was a matter of overlaying some titles

This was a second edit, I added a bit more because the first one was a tad morbid.
