Where My Shoes Take Me

For my second video assignment this week, I did the “Where do your shoes take you?” assignment. I thought it’d be simple, just film my feet while walking to class and add some music.

You can view my finished product here:

This was more work than I expected. I ended up having so much footage, because the walk from my apartment to work is over 10 minutes alone. I played around a lot with the speed, and realized that while some parts had to be very fast, others would be lost if they weren’t slower. I had to edit it around to get the pace to something I liked, but I think it turned out okay. The music I found on CC Search, and is credited at the end.

To the coffee

After my first stumbling block with Windows Movie Maker, I ran into a brick wall for the my second project, “Where do your shoes take you?” the Window Movie Maker audio component wasn’t working at all. This baffled me, as I had just used the system yesterday without any difficulty, but after trying to find a quick fix via google, I decided it was time to try another editing software.

First I tried Lightworks, it was highly recommend as professional grade software, but I skipped over the part of the review warning about it being “intimidating”. As soon as I finished installed it, I knew I was in trouble. So many buttons, and options, and how do I piece together several clips, and how do I add audio – ahhhhhhhh, help!! UNINSTALL.

For the second search, I included, user friendly as a qualifier and discovered VSDC Video Editor. after installing this program, I still had a few questions to get started, but the program directed me quickly and easily to tutorials. Now we are in business. And a vast upgrade from the 2.6 Windows Movie Maker.

I uploaded all my clips and opted to supply sound effects collected from Freesound  for the first two scenes. then I wanted a fun, upbeat song that reflected my pace of day. I searched for royalty free music and came across Bensound. I chose a jazzy little number and over laid it from the point I put on my blue suede shoes. I left the video audio intact for the kitchen and elevator scenes to provide contrast and a sense of waiting.

Finally, I added the closing credits and extended the music until the end of these. This title and caption editing was so much better tha nthe Windows Movie Maker. I could place the text any where on the screen. I settled on a classic black and white and centered to play off the quirky music.

I enjoyed this project more than I thought I would, which I credit greatly to the software. Being able to produce a higher quality final production really boosts a girl’s mood! The one thing I would really like to master on the next go round is turning the camera image. I filmed these landscape, but because it facing the floor the majority of time, it uploaded horizontal. I just need to figure out that rotation within the editor……

A Mile in My Shoes

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/where-do-your-shoes-take-you/ 4

For my last assignment this week I chose where my feet take me in a day which is worth 4 stars (12 total for the week).

A few weeks ago I did a soundtrack of my day so I thought this would be a nice pairing. Unfortunately, visually it isn’t all that diverse. UMW is a very brick filled campus so that was the background in most of my shots. Because of that, I did not include a clip from every part of my day. I left some out so that it wouldn’t be three minutes of brick. I thought this would be a nice play on “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”. The video takes you from my morning, walking through my apartment till I walk back in my front door at the end of the day. I show several different locations including my walk to and from campus, Monroe Hall (where I had class that day), the Nest, and other random spots around campus. The music makes the video seem much more intense than just some simple walking and I like the layer it adds to it. It would have been interesting to see more changes potentially within the shots. Maybe I could have started int he morning when I first woke up and went until I went to bed. However, I also didn’t want to make the video too long since it was just me walking. Overall I really like how this turned out and I believe it’s a nice pairing tot my old audio assignment.

Where my shoes take me

I decided to do Where do your shoes take you assignment (4 stars), which was harder than I thought. It felt really unnatural to be filming my feet wherever I went lol, it was weird. I’m not used to filming/taking pictures every day either, so I kept forgetting and had to go back and redo it.

I used iMovie to put it together and used a song from Free music archive as background music.

My Path is the Sound of my Feet on the Ground

I decided to do this assignment as one of the 10 video assignments. The assignment was to video where my feet went during the day and I decided to do mine in the evening because thats normally when I do more things than just going to classes. I’ve always loved the line from the song Carry On by FUN, which I used as my title and I thought that it was on point for the video and I got it to sync up with the beat and my walking and also when I was practicing Bhangra which I thought was cool. I just used iMovie and downloaded the song to use it. Very easy to do and I liked what I decided to video thought the change in lighting and what I did looked good and was at times a little funny.

Where my feet take me?

The next video assignment I completed this week was Where Do Your Shoes Take You? This assignment was worth 4 stars! To complete this assignment I basically just used my camera on my iPhone to record my various travels throughout my day! I recorded these videos on Monday! I chose Monday because I have three classes that are all across campus on that day which allowed for my footage! After I recored all the individual clips I uploaded them to my computer and inputed them into iMovie. After that I began to add in music, title slides, and transitions! Then I exported the video to my computer desktop and here is the final product!! Can you guess what buildings my shoes took me to this day?

Where My Shoes Take Me

For my second assignment of the week, I decided to complete the Where Your Shoes Take You assignment worth 4 stars. I was sketchy at first that you were only allowed to take video of your feet, as I personally would like to see the destination of where your shoes take you. That being said, I created a video that included my final destination, but still focus on my feet.

To create my video, I originally wanted to do it on my way to class. However, I forgot. So instead, I did it after I finished working the Night of the Singing Dead Event in Dodd Auditorium. Because it was so dark outside and you could not see my feet, the video starts with me getting out of my friend’s car and walking the rest of the way home. I used my iPhone to capture the video and then uploaded it to my computer, and onto YouTube. Below is the final product, and of course, my feet did not fail me and took me straight to my favorite place after a long day: bed.

Another Day At Work

This is my first of two video assignment this week. In this assignment we had to create a video of just our shoes that tells some kind of story. I chose to do this assignment for one of my assignments this week because I thought it would be a fun assignment to do because I could just take videos at any point throughout my day to show what a day in my shoes look like. I thought it would be a good idea to show what I do every weekday by recording some of the things I do at work. I wasn’t able to record a lot of the stuff I do at work by just recording me feet, but I was able to get enough footage to make sure everyone got an idea of what my work day is like. I knew it would be easy to get videos of me walking because I do a lot of walking at work everyday.

I started off with me waking up and getting out of bed in the morning. This is obviously something I have to do every morning so I thought it would be a good idea to add this part to my video. I also showed me getting into my car and driving to work. Everyday I get to work, I start off by changing into my boots because those are very important when you are working at a lumber yard. I showed a little bit of me driving a forklift and me cutting corners with a saw that we use for deliveries. I also had to add my favorite part of the work day to this video, my lunch break. This is when I can sit down, relax, and get out of the 90 degree heat. I added another video of me riding around on the side of a forklift that was driving by because I was tired of walking throughout the lumber yard. The last video of me finally getting off of work and being free for the rest of the day.

I added the song “I’m gonna be (500 miles)” by The Proclaimers to the background of my video because I thought it fit this assignment very well. I also chose this as the background song for all of my fellow “How I Met Your Mother” fans because whenever I think of this song, I think of Ted and Marshall’s road trip. I also used some techniques that we learned about earlier this week from two of the required videos in my assignment (video 1, video 2). I used slow motion and fast forward techniques throughout the video to help add extra detail to my assignment. I put me throwing my lunch away in slow motion because my least favorite time at work is when I have to end my lunch break and go back to working. I also transitions that had examples in the videos like jump cuts and wipe transitions. I used other transitions in my story that we didn’t have examples for because I thought they provided a good transition between two events at work.

Where Do My Shoes Take Me?

Process: I took a slightly different approach when putting this video together and there were some big pros and cons which I will go into later. I wasn’t a huge fan of iMovie so I decided to take advantage of the awesome features my new Samsung Galaxy s8 has. I recorded a bunch of clips and cropped them each individually under the edit tab by just dragging the ends of the clip to cut parts out. Within the camera app on the phone, you have the option to add audio to your recorded videos so I tried to select a sound that matched the video and make it a little humorous (for the cat and snake part). I saved each video then downloaded the Movie Maker app on my phone(taking screenshots in the app was very difficult so I couldn’t include a step-by-step picture guide). With that, I was able to upload all my clips into one video. There I had the option to add transitions and text to each clip.  Instead of explaining every detail here in the blog like I did with the College Snapshot assignment, I tried to be creative and incorporate that aspect into the video without making it super long.

Pros: Straight forward, easy-to-understand layout, wide selection of sound effects, ability to add text with different fonts and sizing, changes in speed of each clip, and transition options.

Cons: Working on a small screen, positioning of text was difficult, and time consuming. With this being an app for phones, viewing the video on larger screens makes it blurry and leads to the black bars on the side. I couldn’t find a way to fix this.

Overall, this is an amazing editing app in the palm of your hands (literally since it’s all on the phone) with more pros than cons. iMovie probably has all of these features and more, but I didn’t enjoy using it enough to explore that much. With this, I had fun playing around with all of the effects and I think the convenience of everything on the phone was very nice. I could work on this assignment in the car when Daniel was driving and I felt I was using my time wisely.

Story: For the story, I should be answering the question, where do my shoes take me? But the point of adding text to the video was so I wouldn’t have to write an essay here, as my feet do go many places. So I hope the texts help viewers understand what’s going on. Unlike many people my age, I don’t have my phone on me 24/7. Especially on fun days (like when I go kayaking) where I’d rather be paying attention to what’s going on in front of me instead of my phone. And I can go to school or go shopping and leave it at home, so not everything I did was captured on video. Besides I think that’d be boring to watch. I just go to school, do homework, and eat. I tried to make it funny by adding the music for the cats and the snake part.
