Damon here. I decided to use this assignment opportunity to give a little peek into my work process. Now, obviously, my art takes much longer than 30 seconds. It usually takes hours, days, even years. You could even say some of my work is taking a lifetime, but I won’t get too far into that.

For this tutorial, I decided to just show you a quick sketch that I did to give an idea of how I work. I like to draw freehand – it ensures my art comes from passion rather than too much thought. I also like to use unique colors and shapes in order to set my pieces apart from others.

This video was not too hard to make, though it was pretty difficult to hold my camera while also sketching. However, I do like to challenge myself with my art, so I don’t mind the difficulty here.

Well, I hope this helps give a little look into the most important part of my life.

How to Open a Lock Tutorial

4 stars

For this video assignment, I decided to do a tutorial for opening a lock in 30 seconds (or less!). I was successful at completing this task. To record, I used my photobooth app on my laptop and moved them over into iMovie so I could do overlapping with words and compile everything together!

“The Last Bit Lost” — A Stop Motion LEGO Short Film

This week, I spent a long time planning. I saw the “30 Second Documentary“, and decided to plan for a stop motion LEGO assignment. “The Last Bit Lost” is about the most tragic time in Donnie Rawlen’s life–when his family…

At first I was trying to narrate the video as I was doing it but after a few times of trying to do that and it not working out I came up with this way. The hardest part was trying not to mess up because that trick is meant to be done kind if quickly.

How to restring a guitar

I was playing my guitar while I was trying to think of an idea of what to do for my “30 Second Documentary” assignment when I broke a string.  I figured that since I have to change it anyway, why not make a documentary about it?  I recorded myself with a tripod, and then edited the video in iMovie.  I added music and title slides to further document my steps.

Here is a screenshot of the process.

Okay, a bit more.  I did this based on the assignment 30 Second Documentary

Now, to get all official the original assignment had 4 and a half stars.  What is that?  The way I see it, if i do a sub par job I could give myself 4 stars, or…if i do an great job I get 5.

So FIVE it is.  I think the video is short, sweet, and tells a nice little story.

I am learning to LOOOVE stop action.  It really puts an interesting perspective on something that is pretty simple.

I like it.  A lot.

Chores Chores Chores****

For my last video assignment, I created a 30 Second Documentary on something that I’m bad at doing.  I’m not sure why this assignment was rated 4.91 stars, because it literally took me 5 minutes to do, but it was a nice way to finish off video week.

I’m usually pretty good about doing my laundry, but I almost NEVER fold it, and when I do, I just whip it together to make it somewhat fit in the dresser.  My video is a little over 30 seconds and it shows me half-heartedly folding my laundry.  I didn’t realize until after I finished filming and uploading the video to YouTube, that I have a huge hole in my shorts.  That’s pretty embarrassing but what’re you gonna do. We’re all human and besides, I’m a broke college student. :)

My life in a nutshell

30 sec documentary

*Please be sure to have hard hats on!

For this assignment, my mom was actually the one to suggest ideas. The idea was to basically pick a topic, any topic, and make a 30 second documentary from it. My mom suggests that I pick something I am terrible at, and make a video from it. I really couldn’t decide between riding a bike and tying my shoes, but after recording both, I went with the latter. I really do struggle with this, and I usually get so frustrated that just end up tucking them into the sides my shoes. Although it sounds ridiculous, it’s 100% honest. When I was younger, my parents made me get these ugly boots and said I could pick my own next pair once i learned to tie my shoes…Well, being the rebellious child I was, I didn’t learn out of spite and ever since then, I just never put in the effort. Now whenever i try to learn, i just get frustrated and give up. For this, I recorded with my phone, and then uploaded it to iMovie. The background music is I Love It, just be ironic because trying my shoes is something I absolutely hate doing! If i get a chance, I’ll also upload the video of me riding a bike..Which is actually just disgraceful because I fell twice. This was a worthy four and 1/2 ?’s, and it was fun! I think making fun of myself also added some comedic relief and you can also laugh with me on it!

Delicious Peas****.5

So for this assignment, we were supposed to make a documentary on something that lasted 30 seconds. The idea was to cram something that provided knowledge about something to other people into a short amount of time.  The process made you focus on the little important bits that gave the most information.

I was trying to do something that was lacrosse related, but I shaved off my mustache and separated my shoulder so I couldn’t do it.  So instead, I had to think of something else.  It took me a while to think about something, longer than I would have liked, so I eventually just gave up on thinking of something creative and went with something really, really lame.  How to cook peas.

Yes, the directions are on the bag.  Yes, I was making dinner.  Yes, I’m even disappointed in myself, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.  I assembled everything in iMovie again, which I’m definitely getting a good feel for–everything is getting really easy and quick.  The filming was done on my iPhone, which is currently my best friend as of late.  Here’s my final video.

In retrospect, I really wish I had thought of something better.  I separated my shoulder the day before so I really just wasn’t in a very creative mood.  Still feel the same way.  Can’t always perform your best.

“30 Second Documentary” Assignment (3.5 Stars)

The one thing I look forward to every Sunday morning has to be Sunday brunch. I’m not sure what makes it so appealing to me: the food? the mimosas? or the fact that it’s socially acceptable to wake up around 11AM and have my first meal be around noon? Maybe it’s all of the above, who knows!

Anyways, for this assignment, I chose to teach ya’ll how to make a component of my favourite brunch dish (eggs benedict), the poached egg. I wanted to teach you how to make eggs benedict, but to be honest, it would have been closer to a 10 minute documentary rather than a 30 second one. Here’s the video I made today:

As with all of my other video projects, I edited this on iMovie. After doing yesterday’s assignment with the “A Day in My Life” video, I feel really comfortable using iMovie now. Editing is really a breeze! Lookie:

Anyways, for this video, I chose to challenge myself a little by adding in different shots/angles of me cooking (I didn’t really mind because that meant making two poached eggs!) as well as layering the audio (which I didn’t really do in my last two video projects). Also, I wanted the opening sequence and credits to show the video in the background rather than a black screen (like my other videos). I thought it was going to be hard to figure out, but I didn’t even have to end up doing anything at all. It’s like iMovie read my mind!

But yeah, that’s really it! If you want to learn how to make eggs benedict, I would recommend watching this video by Byron Talbott. He does an amazing job of making amazing dishes while making it seem easy and effortless!

Let me know if you try making a poached egg! I would love to exchange tips and tricks (:
