10 things I HATE about you

For my assignments this week, I have already completed a writing assignment so I decided to pick an assignment from the visual assignments. As someone who sends gifs in the middle of texting to express my reaction, I was intrigued by the “Say it Like the Peanut Butter” assignment which essentially instructed me to make a gif.

The instructions said to make a gif from a favorite movie of ours. I immediately thought of the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. It’s one of my favorite movies simply because of the main character, Kat Staford.

I went on Youtube to find a video of my favorite scene then I used Makeagif.com to convert it into a gif. I gave the gif a caption to give the gif some context and I shared it on my Twitter page:

The movie, 10 things I Hate About You was actually an adaptation of Shakespeare’s, Taming of the Shrew, which is actually why I love the movie so much. The main character, Kat Staford who is an adaptation of Katherine Minola from the play, is one of my favorite characters of all time. She is very outspoken and fearless in how she expresses herself. She is very rebellious against things she doesn’t like about society like the patriarchy.

This clip does a phenomenal job of depicting the essence of her character. She is seen tearing down a school poster about a school dance that she taught was stupid and superficial.

This gif that I created reminded me of how I felt reading the email that was sent out from the university earlier this week. UMW sent out an email saying that to comply with Governor Glenn Youngkin’s policies, UMW is no longer mandating vaccines for faculty and no longer COVID testing non-vaccinated faculty members.

I found this so enraging. The fact that COVID is only on the rise and the fact that faculty members come in contact with so many students EVERY SINGLE DAY. To no longer require they be vaccinated seemed so irresponsible to me.

Therefore, I decided to incorporate my gif into my Twitter Feed and make a post about how I felt. This is the “Joy of Painting.” Our course’s theme essentially suggests that the work we complete is not like other assignments for other classes where we just complete a task to cross off of our to-do list. Instead, to view the work we do as pieces of art. With that being said that is the joy of DS106, the Joy of Painting, the joy of art. It allows us to use things we use in our daily lives as an outlet and as a form of expression. A simple gif that you’d send to your friend in a normal texting conversation can be art if you choose to make it so.

I see why this assignment is “a classic DS106 assignment” it allows you to think and create a story and make connections from what you see, what you feel, what you are instructed to do, etc. This assignment allows you to be creative and tell a story in such a simple and fun way. That is the Joy of Painting to me. The way you’ll grab a canvas to paint feeling like you’re gonna create something beautiful, the same can be said when you grab your laptop to complete a DS106 assignment.

Captain Asgard

When I think “pivotal movie moment,” I instantly think of this scene from Avengers: Endgame. The build up to this moment and the helplessness followed by triumph make for an incredibly epic moment. There isn’t much more to say about it other than the fact that this moment on opening night in the theaters was INSANE!

Visual Assignment

GIF from my favorite movie!

The first assignment I choose from the assignment bank was a visual one! More specifically, the directions were too add a gif of your most or least favorite movie!

This was a little overwhelming for me to have to choose just ONE movie because I didn’t want to choose the wrong one! I eventually landed on probably one of the most common and well known movies that was ever made: Grease.

This movie has always been one of my favorites ever since I was younger. I started out by watching the movie with my cousins when I was in elementary school and they were in high school. I didn’t quite understand all the references or even the plot when I was that young, but instead I focused on the songs. I would watch the movie on repeat just for the music and the dancing! My mom eventually watched it with us one time and after that I wasn’t allowed to watch it again until middle school :/ Even after not being able to watch it for a couple of years I was still so obsessed. So much so that when I finally entered middle school, my parents bought me the dvd!

Now, being 21 and a senior in college, that movie is still one of my favorites and a movie I will never get tired of!

I chose the gif above because it is the final scene of the movie. They have all graduated high school and are starting to the next chapter of their life. This is a scene I can start to relate to now as it is my final semester in school with all my friends before we graduate!

Say It Like The Peanut Butter

Make an animated gif from your favorite/least favorite movie capturing the essence of a key scene. Make sure the movement is minimal but essential.

Note this is a classic and historic DS106 assignment, the second one ever created. It has been resurrected from the tomb of lost assignments.

Iron Man Gif

I love the Iron Man movies, so I decided to make a gif of him flying away from explosion.

Thanos Alters Time and Space

The inspiration for this gif was that Avengers: Infinity War is my favorite superhero movie. The story behind it is that Thanos is probably the most determined supervillain, and probably the first totally unstoppable villain to ever be created.

Magic carpet never lets you down!

I chose Aladdin and the whole point is that the magic carpet is there to always save the day when needed. I chose this one because its such an important point in the movie even though it doesn’t seem it. The idea is that he falls down but the carpet gets him back up.

Films, Reflections, and GIFs

I have actually seen La Jetee before!
The first time I watched it was because I used to really be into stop motion movies. I tried to find the only I made in 6th grade but I couldnt ? Anyways I have always felt that it was a super cool and interesting plotline to fit into 30 minutes. I particularly like his decision to stay with the woman in the past because I feel like all humans can relate to that. In the future (maybe near? @elon musk) decisions like this will have to be made. When watching it a second time i did feel a sort of a disconnect because a fair bit of the narration is in first person which I found to be weird since there were no mouths actually moving.

The Road

I really enjoyed this movie. It had me on the edge of my seat the way only a apocalyptic fiction can. Particularly I really enjoyed the scene where they are hiding in the woods from the bad guys in the beginning of the movie. That is why I chose to make it into a gif. When watching the movie, I had many near tear experiences. It seemed like the movie was a constant cycle of starvation, near-death experiences, and The Man finding ways for them to survive.

I think the first time I almost cried was right before they found the apple orchard and they were literally about to starve to death. The father-son dynamic that was on full display there was truly heart-breaking. It was like any movie where the father has to promise hope and survival in a time where he is not even sure of it himself. Oh yeah, that made the part where HE DIES so much worse. Really… just rip my heart out at that point. I could see that the director/ author of the movie strategically chose to kill of The Man when the audience felt like he had taught The Boy enough to survive.

I really hated the ending… call me a pessimist but I am not a fan of overly happy endings where there is (too) much hope on display. After and entire journey and The Man dead, The Boy finally finds decent people? How convenient and upsetting. They Boy kinda aggravated me the whole movie anyway, he was the epitome of being UN-self-sufficient in the beginning.

My Film Reflection with GIF

La Jetée was a very interesting short film in how it was created and how the storyline was shown. The saying of “a picture holds a thousand words” can really be seen in this film. As it is made up of photographs instead of instead of actual film, it was a bit hard to watch at first. The black and white photographs gave it a rather bleak feeling, and the deep voice narrating only enhances the feeling. Terry Gilliam, the director, was really able to convey as much emotion through pictures as the movies are able to. Each picture was very purposefully taken at a moment where the emotion can be seen and felt by the viewer. The succession of the photos along with the narration and sound effects also helped convey this emotion.

Overall, I feel like I learned a lot about how photos are able to convey stories and emotions, but I also feel like this isn’t really something that I would be able to watch very often. It lacked, for me, in a lot of places where I feel more would have been better. It feels like there are holes in a story when you can’t see or hear everything that’s going on. On the other hand, there are a lot of movies that feel this way too, so it’s hard to tell.

I absolutely loved watching Train to Busan! This was definitely one of my favorite zombie films so far (even though it made me cry). It was cool in a way that it wasn’t very obvious that there was a zombie apocalypse going on at first since we were seeing things at the character’s point of view on the train. It wasn’t until it was affecting the train that we finally realized what was going on. There were talks about some crazy people and not going outside, but the whole zombie thing wasn’t ever mentioned to the characters. This left them without really knowing much about what was happening outside the train.

This film really draws on your empathy towards the daughter, Su-an, right from the very beginning. She has divorced parents and is under the care of an uninvolved dad. She’s obviously very curious, smart, and brave, which only draws the audience in more. The more the movie goes on, the more involved she gets with the zombies and the apocalypse, the more the empathy grows towards here.

The dad, Seok-woo, was not portrayed very well in the beginning. You mostly have a dislike for him at first since he obviously has not been taking good care of his daughter. However, the more the movie goes on, you can definitely see how much he cares for her and puts her first. Once the ending scene happens, where he has to forcibly remove himself from her, is his character fully redeemed.

There were other characters that made you empathize with them such as the husband and pregnant wife. They are immediately likeable characters and you can feel your heartstrings getting pulled when the husband gets killed trying to save everyone else on the train. You grow more attached to the pregnant wife as well the longer she stays in the movie and with the main character. The fact that she’s pregnant only enhances the empathy.

There was the really selfish CEO, Yon-suk, who only ever made you feel disgust towards. Throughout the entire film his selfish ways only ever put others in danger – especially the main characters. He was constantly leaving people behind, using people as shields, and even throwing people into the fray of things in order to escape. The scene where he sacrifices the train conductor really cements this fact. Even his ending scene where he bites Seok-woo only left the audience feeling disgusted by his character.

The gif I created was from the ending scene where Seok-woo had gotten bitten and he had to leave his daughter.

I currently don’t have Photoshop, so I used Giphy instead to take my trimmed video to make a gif. Still had problems with trying to upload it onto WordPress, so I did it the long way around through embedding a Twitter post.

I decided on this short scene here since it was such an emotional part of the movie. The whole time you were really rooting for Seok-woo and Su-an to survive, so the moment you see the bite on his hand, it was game over for everybody. The zombie virus spreads so fast, so you know he doesn’t have a whole lot of time left before he turns. This part, honestly, made me cry so hard.

That’s the end of my film review! I hope you liked it!
