Say it like peanut butter

My favourite all time movie is Star Trek, and what better opportunity to experience the awe and brilliance of Benedict Cumberbatch.

The assignment required me to make a gif but also ‘making sure the movement is minimal but essential’ – This gif is not minimal, or short in that matter – because to be quite frank, it deserves the whole 6 seconds – because this essential scene is the unmasking of Khan Noonien Singh.

“My name is … Khan”

ughhhh – chills.

Darcy Arrives GIF

Created in Adobe Photoshop

These GIFs were made for the Say it Like Peanut Butter Assignment from the DS106 Assignments site.

The first version here was made using Adobe Photoshop. Here are the steps I took to make this GIF from the movie Pride and Prejudice:

1. I imported my video clip into Photoshop using the import video frames to layers option.

2. Next, I opened up the timeline at the bottom of the screen and selected New layers Visible in All Frames in the small Timeline drop down in the upper right corner of the timeline.

3. After that, I cropped all of my frames by clicking on the first frame, holding down Shift and scrolling to my last frame and clicking on it to select all of my frames, and then using the Crop Tool (5th tool on the side tool bar).

4. Then, I resized all of my frames by clicking on the first frame, holding down Shift and scrolling to my last frame and clicking on it to select all of my frames, and then resizing my image under the Image tab and selecting Image Size.

5. I then deleted a bunch of unnecessary frames by selecting several of the frames on the timeline and clicking the trash button at the bottom of the timeline in order to make my final GIF file size smaller.

6. Lastly, under the File tab I clicked on Save for Web… and selected the Optimized version as well as made sure it was saving as a GIF (drop-down under the Preset drop-down). I did not play around with any of the other settings.

Omar’s Tie Fly By

Omar Little rules.  You pretty much realize that by the first season’s end, but by the second season he starts to take on legendary status because his knowledge of greek mythology, his brilliant courtroom apparel, and his ability to shutdown Maury Levy in a courtroom of his peers. It’s all in the video below if you need a reminder of his brilliance in Season 2, Episode 6, “All Prologue,” which may be one of the best episodes of the series.

He’s one of the better characters TV has ever seen, and that’s embedded within a series that probably has ten or fifteen of the best characters TV has ever seen. But when I was watching this time around, I was fascinated by the almost childlike heckling of Bird Omar does with his tie after he’s been sentenced to life. He uses the crazy tie he wears in court to taunt him, and there’s a sense of joyfulness that’s mixes oddly with some violent vengeance. It just hit such a strange register for me that I had to make an animated GIF. So I did, as one does.

Say It Like the Peanut Butter: When Is Too Much?

When you pass by someone with too much cologne on!

When you pass by someone with too much cologne on!

For our first digital story telling visual assignment we were to create a GIF that has to do with our favorite movie.

See full assignment specs here: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/say-it-like-the-peanut-butter/

I used imgflip.com to create my GIF. It had a lot of tools to select the time editing and how it can be viewed after creation.

I chose to make my GIF about Anchorman, and more specifically the scene where Brian Fantana, played by Paul Rudd, has used a terrible cologne that is extremely strong. When I made the GIF it reminded me of when people walk by me with too much cologne on even if it smells good. I love Anchorman and I hope this makes your day!

Say it like the Peanut Butter GIF

For my digital storytelling assignment I did a GIF of my all time favorite movie Finding Nemo.I have loved this movie ever since it came out and I still watch it all the time at work in the daycare. Honestly I never had heard of a GIF, I sometimes had seen them on sites on Facebook but I didn’t know thats what they were called or that there would be a few sites to help show me how to make it. The trickiest part is to watch it and time the sliders perfectly to get the result you want. My result is Dorothy when she finds her pet squishy (jellyfish).

When you want chik-fil-a, but you realize it’s Sunday (Say it like Peanut Butter)

Growing up in the 90’s I frequently watched a LOT of disney movies. One of my favorite movies being Mulan (if you haven’t seen it or don’t like it, you must not have had a fun childhood, if you have, enjoy).

theIndestructibleMushu

There are plentiful amounts of captions that could be made to describe this Gif. I know this is exactly how I feel when I realize Chik-fil-a is closed on Sundays. Or even when you’re at the store with your mom and she plays like she’s actually going to buy you that massive box of Reese’s Puffs. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy.

Napoleon Dynamite Kick

The gif I created is from the movie Napoleon Dynamite which is a treasure trove of funny scenes and one liners. This scene in particular is from when Napoleon and Kip visit the local martial arts academy and are left fairly unimpressed. Napoleon Dynamite is the kind of movie you either really love or hate, but over time it has become a favorite of mine.

As far as this assignment goes, the creation of a gif is far more simple than I had anticipated. I’ve always been a fan of them in providing a good laugh in an easy way. By simply googling how to make one, I ended up a makeagif.com which allowed me to make the gif without a whole lot of trouble. I would however prefer it to be longer and include more of the scene without the 5 second limit. Either way, I figure its not too bad for a first attempt.

The Waterboy

The Gif I created is from one of my all time favorite movies The Waterboy. For those who have not seen this movie, it stars Adam Sandler as a middle aged water boy, named Bobby Boucher, who is socially awkward. After being fired from a top college football program, he finds another job with a different college team who is not very good or motivated. As for his first day with the new team most of the players make fun of him so much where he gets to his boiling point and comes on the field and destroys the Quarterback. After that display the coach begs him to join the team, in which Bobby accepts. This Gif is a scene from his first practice in which the coach asks him to tackle another player the way he tackled the Quarterback the day before, in which Bobby does not disappoint.

Going into this assignment I was really nervous because I didn’t know what the process was to make a Gif, I didn’t know how difficult it was or how long it would take. I always have been interested though on how you create them, because they are always on Twitter and Facebook. To begin, I just searched on Google about how to create them and I found www.makeagif.com. From this website it seemed very self-explanatory on the different ways you can create a Gif. For the scene I wanted, I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to find a short clip of the scene on Youtube. Luckily, I found the perfect clip, and was able to edited and cut out a couple seconds, and keep the main part that I wanted. I am very pleased with the way it turned out, and I hope everyone enjoys it.

I Don’t Want To Say It Like The Peanut Butter

l&s

I felt a lot like Lilo this week with my adventures in DS106. I may now hold the world record for running into the most technical problems in a week. So by the time I got around to the gif making exercise, I was not amused.

I tried a few methods for making gifs- makeagif.com, which yielded hysterically bad quality images, and I tried a convoluted program that involved downloading too many things. After some digging around, though, I realized that I could make it in Photoshop.

At last. Finally, something I understand.

I used a (probably illegal) website to download a Youtube video of my girl Lilo lamenting the state of the world. I specifically went looking for a short clip that included subtitles, so that I wouldn’t have to do a lot of trimming or adding text. I then uploaded it into Photoshop using the “Import- video frames to layers” option.

From there, life was amazing. I resized the image because it was very large, and then selected “Save for Web.”  When prompted, instead of saving as a .png I saved it as a .gif (which I personally refuse to pronounce like the peanut butter).

And then WordPress struck. After soaring through the project, I could not for the life of me make my gif animate once placed in WordPress. So I consulted my good friend Google, and what do you think was the first hit? A DS106 page. Thank you Alan Levine. After learning that I had to upload it at full size, I was good to go!

I could have used a website to make the .gif but all the results were very low quality images or came with an annoying watermark. Using photoshop was mindbogglingly easier than I expected. My gif runs a little fast, but overall I’m very happy with how it came out. I also saved it to my phone so I now have a built in response to send out when people ask me how my DS106 homework is coming along.

Say It Like The Peanut Butter

My all time favorite movie since I was in middle school has always been Mean Girls. The movie summary is Cady Heron starts public school for the first time. She has always been home schooled, but even less in the traditional way. She grew up on the African plains. Two kids in her homeroom Janis […]
