Triple (or Quadruple?) Twitter Troll WIRE106 Quote

“Triple4 Twitter Troll Quote WIRE106 Major Willam Gibson Valchek” by Andrew Forgrave, on Flickr

This is my first attempt (I think) at the (Triple) Troll Quote assignment: Visual Assignment 24, by the responses to which I am frequently impressed. There is a simplicity to the technical execution of the assignment which emphasizes the connections that happen before the Art is made. While not a new Jim Groom Triple Troll Wire Epigraph (the text does not come from an episode epigraph), it does relate very nicely to The Wire and #wire106.

The inspiration for this piece came directly from the Twitter stream this morning. Roberto Greco replied to Audrey Watters‘ comments about the events in Ferguson, Missouri in August, 2014.

Roberto tweet mashes up quotes from author William Gibson (whose ground-breaking (and award-winning) cyberpunk novel Neuromancer was published in 1984) and George Orwell‘s character Major from Animal Farm. I figure it is a perfect setup for a Triple (or Quadruple?) Troll Quote WIRE106 assignment. Valchek (pictured) could very well quote the constitution or law, but he’s pretty much motivated use it to subvert others for his own personal and petty interests (the stained glass window, in season two).

Business Card

I present to you, my final project!
The-Voice

To make this simple business card I used an already installed template that I found on Microsoft word.

business card sample

Then I simply added the formation I wanted to and added a small clip art picturing by searching “bricks”.

I got the title for the company from my Uncle’s masonry shop, and just replaced his name with the name Wolfe.  Then using google maps, I picked a random street address in New York, altered it a little so not to be exact, and created that address.  Then I made up a fake new york number using their zip code.

I couldn’t find anything in the assignment bank that this represented so I guess I would consider this a visual assignment that I created.

Surreal Panorama

Create a surreal panorama by first making a panorama (duh), and then munipulating the photograph to make it out of this world. However, don’t go out and just make a panorama via your iPhone!!! Take some pictures and mash them together!

And the Volturi?

I made this great idea for a mashup assignment!

Take a movie that you really like.  Now think of a movie that has been compared to it, and make a new movie poster that incorporates the two!

Be creative and really sell your poster!

Everyone knows that for a while, the Harry Potter series and the Twilight series were in stiff competition.  So why not make one movie?

Introducing, Harry Potter and the Volturi!!!
done

Here are all the pictures I started with
FUll-Volturi-e1347069225972 hp

I want to start with the Harry Potter picture and use that as my main background.  Since I want to change the title, I need to remove the words “goblet of fire”.  In order to do this I uploaded the pic to Corel Paintshop Pro X6
Capture

In order to remove the words, go to the left tool bar and select clone>object removal.  This will bring up a lasso tool, then trace around the area you want removed.  Once you do this a dotted line will appear, go up to the top tool bar and select source mode.  This will bring up a box, drag and resize that box over an area of the picture that you want to replace the words.  For this, I dragged it over the bushes in the background. Then go up top again and select apply.  This will remove the words.

After I saved this I opened it in GIMP, along with pictures of the volturi.

Using the lasso tool, I traced around the people I wanted to keep and copy and pasted them around the background in the Harry Potter picture.

Next, for the new title, I needed the letters to match everything else so I went to dafont and downloaded the Harry Potter font.  Then I opened the picture in microsoft word to add the rest of the title with the correct font.

A Pale Imitation – Audio Assignment #2

I chose May I Take Your Order, since I recognized that I could get that done in less than 10 minutes, and I did. I did it poorly, but it is infinitely better than getting a zero after the last two harrying days. Did a quick smash-and-grab recording with a short script and threw it onto sound cloud. My apologies for any offense I cause with my horrible accent.

- David

Don’t bite your friends!

For this audio assignment, I had to pretend to interview someone and have their responses be snippets from songs.

I chose to interview Luis Suarez, a profession Uruguayan soccer player. If you don’t know what happened recently in a World Cup match, Suarez was caught biting an opponent. This is the third time he’s been caught doing so and there is a lot of controversy about the event. You can read more about it here and also watch a video clip if you are curious! I decided to pick Suarez to interview because it’s been in the news a lot lately and would make a funny audio mashup!

I brainstormed songs on my own to use. I also Googled songs about being hungry or other topics related to the event, for example, biting, hunger, and being sorry. Once I had a list of songs, I created questions that would match the lyrics. Here is a list of the songs I used snippets from:

“Oops!… I Did it Again” by Britney Spears

“I’m Sorry” by Blake Shelton

“Sorry, Blame It On Me” by Akon

“Tossing and Turning” by The Ivy League

“Crying” by Roy Orbison

“Innocent” by Taylor Swift

“Don’t Bite Your Friends” by Yo Gabba Gabba!

“Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran

“Nobody But Me” by The Human Beinz

“Bleed Red” by Ronnie Dunn

“Stand By Me” by Ben E. King

For songs I didn’t already have, I used a YouTube to mp3 converter.

Once you find the song on YouTube, just copy the link and paste it into the box above the buttons that says “Covert Video.” Then click the “Covert Video” button. The image below should come up. Then, click the “Download” link and the mp3 will be downloaded to your computer. You will then be able to access it from GarageBand.

Once you have done this for all the songs, you can drag the songs from the Media Browser under the Audio tab onto the track.

Screen Shot 2014-07-12 at 6.37.27 PM

Now you have a bunch of full-length songs, when you only need snippets of then. To break up a song into segments, you need to use the Split tool under the Edit menu. Make sure the red time bar is located at the time where you want to split the song, then split it.

Do this repeatedly for all the songs until you have all the snippets you need. Then, just use the Record feature (the red circle) to record yourself asking the questions. Rearrange the snippets as needed.

The Stages of a Bad Relationship

I created a story with some of the latest tracks from Avril Lavigne, because I think all of her music is great. I didn’t use any of her early stuff because I couldn’t find it on my computer.

I also didn’t add this to my SoundCloud account because every time I tried, it didn’t work, so I hope this works out. (I found out that the mash up wasn’t going onto Soundcloud because of I used Avril’s Music, so oops.)

The story I’m trying to tell with Lavigne’s songs is about a bad relationship. (This is in no way stating that every relationship is bad or like this, it’s just a story of how some bad relationships work out.)

It starts off with Hello Kitty, which is the beginning of the relationship, the wooing and chasing phase. Each person in the relationship wants to be together and is very excited but they don’t realize how wrong they are for each other.

Then we move on to the confusing and fighting phase, which fits in with What the Hell. This is the part of the relationship where the jealousy and paranoia comes out, even when the partner did actually cheat, the other partner believes it’s worse then it is.

Next is the giving up phase, where neither partner wants to actually take the steps to end the relationship but neither of them is happy; this part of the story is told by Give you what you like. This is where relationship revolves around sex because they don’t want to talk or hang out like they use to.

This is the part of the story/song where the partners only remind each of bad feelings, thoughts, and memories; this is told using How you Remind Me.

The ending of the story is where a partner, it can be male or female, realizes that they can move on and be happy, the ending is given by Lavigne’s Alice. In the ending stage, one or both partners realize that they don’t have to live with this relationship and that they are stronger together than they are apart.

I hope you guys like it! My best friend and I really love Avril’s music, we take turns buying the CD’s when they come out. I finished this before I realized that it could have been 5 minutes long but I hope everyone still likes it. Let me know what you think!

Live From ESPN

For this audio assignment I chose to do the interview/mashup.  I based my interview on ESPN and Lebron James because well, he have been trending on twitter all day since he revealed he will be returning to Cleveland.  Here it is:

Here is the transcript of the interview.  All songs are hyperlinked with their appropriate lyrics.

This is Randi Crabbe reporting live from ESPN Sportscenter.  I am here with Lebron James on his first interview after announcing his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Lebron, after a long-awaited decision you have finally revealed the change.  What was your first thought after making this decision?
I don’t wanna leaaaveeeeeeeeee, but I gotta go right now

What was Chris Bosh’s response to you as he was deciding between staying with the Heat or going to Houston?
I’m torn in between the two, but I really wanna be with you

And Dwade? What are your remarks to him?
It aint nothing to cut that — off

What did he have to say?
Sometimes I want to walk in your shoes Do the type of things that I never ever do

Lebron, you are a considered the greatest athlete of all times.  What do you have to say to the people who once called you a sellout?
Drinking every night because we drink to my accomplishments

This is what the Heat fans have to say about you
How could you be so heartless

If you could say one last thing to all the Cavs fans out there, what would you say?
Just hold on im coming home

Wait, wait.  We just got word that Chris Bosh has one last thing to say to you.  Here it is.
No matter what I do, all I think about is you.  Even when I’m with my boo, boy you know I’m crazy over you

This has been breaking news from Sportscenter.  I’m Randi Crabbe.  Have a great night America
Sportscenter theme song

Even though this assignment took me a couple of hours to complete, I had a lot of fun doing so.  Once again I used Audacity to loop all of my sounds together.  I downloaded each sound from YouTube using http://en.savefrom.net/.
youtube clips

Then I tried to import them to Audacity, but it gave me a message saying I must convert these videos into either an AIFF or WAV file.  To do this I simply used an online converter and was easily able to save these newly converted files.

convert

Now that I had all the files converted, one by one I recorded each segment of my own voice and then imported the songs I had chosen.  To get the portion of the song I wanted, after I imported it I used the zoom key to view the song in greater detail, where I then cut out the appropriate words and deleted the rest.

Here is a snippet of my Audacity file to show you what it looked like.

For a better tutorial on how to use Audacity, I encourage you to watch the video by Alan Levine.

Entirely Joined Meaning

I was always confused by all the definitions of remix and mashup, but now I dare to publish a remix (mashup?) from a song and recorded speech (both by me) that is my very personal way to explain remix.

Do The Hitch Cut!

I gave this one a shot because I just think there are endless possibilities. This technique, as Alfred Hitchcock describes, is a way to use editing to change the emotion of a scene. As he describes, the same reaction can appear very differently depending on what you cut to/from. For my example, I found three video clips on YouTube. First, I found a funny clip of a dog on a couch. Then, I found a clip of Jim Carrey and Conan O’Brien laughing. Lastly, I found a clip of a tornado ripping through a suburban backyard. As you can imagine, puppies and tornados generally elicit drastically different reactions. In my mashup, Carrey and O’Brien laugh at the funny dog clip, making them seem like fun-loving people. However, the clip then cuts to the tornado ripping through the backyard and then shows Carrey and O’Brien laughing again, making them appear sadistic and unsympathetic. Check it out here:
