This is an assignment I created called “Animal Dance Off”. I had a really good time making the example and I think the final product turned out very well. All I had to do to create this video was to cut the audio from the Chris Brown song (polka version) and add it to the video of dancing geckos. It was a bit more difficult to get the geckos to move to the beat of the song, but after cutting and copying a few clips and then fast-forwarding pieces it came together pretty well.
I used these two videos to mash up the audio and video.
Here’s a trailer mashup one of my grade 8 students did. Students had to create a mashup of existing content following fair use policy and changing the intent of the original. The student Ellen, mashed The Lion King with audio from Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Well I found this hiding in my drafts. To be honest I never double check if it was published because I was in such a hurry. I went to post one of my assignments tonight and found that this was a draft that was never published. I dunno what happened, probably something to do with my scattered brain. Since I didn’t do it when I originally posted, the files are also now on youtube. I don’t know how much credit I’ll get for last week but here’s the original post. As before the original is in black and new in blue.
Wow did I get my butt handed to me. Editing video took me much longer than I expected. That and uploading seemed to be a bit of a pain in rear. WordPress is really giving me trouble. The “auto imbed” feature of Jet pack doesn’t like me. (6/19 this was fixed) Of course with me being up in Ohio, it was rather difficult to get most of this done in a decent manner. Well here it is folks hope you enjoy.
Mortar to the sound of Sabre’s
This assignment was the “Inanimate Motion” Assignment. I decided to have fun with my new mortar and pestle. This reminded me of making a gif, but having the ability to give it audio.
What Makes you laugh?
This one is self explanatory. I love this movie. It has some of the best one-liners.
Simple DSLR tutorial…I mean really simple.
Ok most parents have a learning curve with technology, especially things with lots of buttons and functions. My DSLR is one of them. Yes, they aren’t that complex….but if you’re used to a kodak disposable…well that’s a different story. Though in my mother’s defence she is not the only one who has mashed the mode knob and was confused why it wouldn’t take the picture.
What skills you got?
Ok i decided taking a video of me taking pictures would be boring. So I decided to show off some of my gear and my finished works. I know similar pictures may be on the web, but I assure you, every picture in this video I personally pushed the shutter button.
The song: “I Love It” by Icona Pop. It’s catchy and you can dance to it.
The tools: iMovie ’11
What I did: I haven’t watched all of the assigned Twilight Zone episodes, so I thought back to the ones I have seen and considered the scenes that would kind-of-sort-of fit the song. Telly Savales falling down the stairs in “Living Doll” was an obvious choice as was footage from “Midnight Sun.”
I downloaded clips from Youtube using clip converter. I’ve been using this Firefox add-on since Camp Magic Macguffin, and it works well for me. Though I’m sure most of these converters have the option to download portions of videos, I found that an especially useful feature for this project.
Settings for clip converter
I opted to save my clips as a .mp4, because that’s what I’ve been doing and it seems to work. I know very little about codecs. Am I even using the right terminology? Is a .wmv a codec or is that just a file type? I should probably look into that….
I converted and saved all of the clips I wanted to work with to my desktop, because that’s the easiest thing for me to do. I created a new project in iMovie called Twilight Zone. Next, I imported all of Twilight Zone .mp4 files in a new event that I called DS106zone.
iMovie process
Most of the clips in the DS106zone event were longer than necessary, so I selected the portions of the clips I wanted, and dragged them to the Twilight Zone project.
I don’t have Icona Pop’s “I Love It” in my music library (because I listen to music through Rdio if I listen to music at all), so I converted the Youtube video to MP3 and then imported that file into my iMovie project. I only used about a minute of the song, because it’s very hard to too time-consuming to find three minutes worth of clips to match with the song.
Once the soundtrack was in place, I moved the video clips around to fit with the lyrics of the song. I muted the volume in the video tracks by reducing volume to 0%. This can be done under “audio adjustment” for each clip.
iMovie screen shot
A lot of folks poo-poo iMovie. It works fine for the video work that I do. I’m sure it has limitations for the hardcore video editors out there. The only problem I’ve encountered is when students try to do a group project at school. It’s impossible (or at least not easy) for students to work asynchronously on a group project without a lot of network account black magic.
This project’s biggest time suck is gathering and organizing the footage. I had a vague mental idea–a mental story board, if you will–of what I wanted the project to look like. That helped with the efficiency of the clip selection, conversion, and editing process.
@indieschoollib So fun! Hadn’t heard this song before. is @IamTalkyTina a “90s bitch”? (meant in a nice way, of course)

This gave me the idea to create and use several frames of Talky Tina floating through space during the closing credits rather than the space ship. I’ll add that to my “to do” list.
Ok, Yeah this may not be worth the full 4.5 Stars in terms of product. The many hours it took me to find a way to record this, that was troublesome and I think makes up the difference. Once I recorded the ending of “A Good Life” and clips from “Living Doll”, both episodes in the Twilight Zone. I simply cut them up and put it together. I more or less actually like the idea of those two going at it. I mean think bout it both concepts are creepy and they both have a knack for killing. I think I’d be an awesome mash up. Personally I’d vote for Talky Tina. I’d like to see her win that one. That’s just me though. This assignment I enjoyed because it was pure fun, well the concept was.
Three of my favorite shows are “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Arrested Development,” and “Scrubs.” The jokes are different but they all share the same sense of humor. Sometimes I think how great it would be if they could all share a show together. Who would enjoy JD’s fantasy worlds more than Tobias? With their greed and selfishness wouldn’t most of the Always Sunny cast make honorary Bluthes?
The reason I chose this project was because it was something I see many others do and I would always find it interesting yet its not something I have never done before myself. I watched multiple youtube videos to educate how I would even start doing this project.
The way I created this piece by first sitting down and thinking about what I wanted to say in my piece. So I decided to create a piece about smoking in a humurous way. So I downloaded clips from Scrubs, Always Sunny, and Arrested Development via youtube. After I decided what pieces I would used I mashed them together using garageband.
Using Audacity (or any other sound editing program) create an audio mashup with 2 very distinct songs. According to wikepedia these mashaps may fall under “fairuse”.
I used up Audacity to mash up three of my favorite covers! Let’s be real though, it was not easy. I uploaded each song and then listened to find commonalities in certain parts of the different songs and I changed the amplitude to make them blend into each other. I tried to play at two songs at all times. I tried to match the lyrics the best I could. Enjoy!
