Evil Twilight – ????

Another assignment that just… spoke to me: Movie Trailer Mashup.

Take your favorite movie trailer and mash it up with a different trailer to completely change the meaning of the original trailer. For example, if you have a funny movie trailer, give it the sound of a terrifying movie; or vice versa.

It took me a few minutes of thinking, but then I knew the movie trailer I needed to mash up for my own entertainment: Twilight (2008). Who doesn’t like a good spoof?

Now the task was to find a trailer with audio that matched the video of Twilight. I searched a lot of dark, horror films that have come out in the past year, and then found Evil Dead (2013).

You can see both trailers below:

I only had to do a little editing at the beginnings and ends of both clips to have them match up. I tried taking out pieces/speeding up the sound to have it match up better, but it created jumps that stood out far too much for me.

I used PwnYouTube and Windows Movie Maker for this one. Adobe Premiere Pro hasn’t been working for me lately, so I had to work with what I had.

Poor Leo – ????

Leonardo DiCaprio has been in over 20 hugely successful films, and yet he has no Oscar to show for it.

I figured the best way to show my love for his work and to do my assignments was to work on the Actor Transformation mashup.

He’s an amazing actor, and through this video, you can really see it. I mashed up  12 clips from his Oscar-worthy movies. You can see from his first huge success, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993), that Leo has incredible skills. The video shows the growth of him as both an actor and a person.

The movies and their respective clips:

1. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) — Clip

2. Romeo + Juliet (1996) — Clip

3. Titanic (1997) — Clip

4. The Beach (2000) — Clip

5. The Gangs of New York (2002) — Clip

6. Catch Me If You Can (2002) — Clip

7. The Aviator (2004) — Clip

8. Blood Diamond (2006) — Clip

9. Inception (2010) — Clip

10. J. Edgar (2011) – Clip

11. Django: Unchained (2012) — Clip

12. The Great Gatsby (2013) — Clip

I threw the last one in there because I just know he’ll be great in it.

How I did it

Wowza did I have a lot of problems with this assignment!

Thankfully, all of the YouTube clips were easily downloaded using PwnYouTube. It’s when I got to MPEG Streamclip that things went downhill.

I have been using MPEG Streamclip for awhile now, but for some reason, the program would not open any of my YouTube downloads.

This was incredibly frustrating so I went to Adobe Premiere to just trim them up in that program. Then that crashed on me every time I tried to open a file. Lacking time this week because of some upcoming presentations and finals, I just decided to use Windows Movie Maker.

It’s not as clean as I normally would like it because Movie Maker just doesn’t have the same options as Premiere. But I made do.

I also have a feeling that I’ll be flagged on YouTube for copyright issues on this one, but I plan to explore my feelings about this much more in my weekly summary.

No One Ignores Paul

Apart of this week’s work was to make use of the recycled media that we submitted in week 9 named Recycle the Media! It seemed pretty cut and dry: take some old media, mash it up..However, if anything was that simple in DS106, then it wouldn’t be that much fun, now would it? Nahh. So we had to start off digging through about 170 pieces of recycled media through minus, which served as a host for all of our yummy leftovers. Man oh man do we create the randomest things in there! I even saw some of my own, which I would be rather impressed if someone managed to weave that into one of their stories! So anyways, I picked five pieces of media (two from different catergories, i.e., audio and visual!) and I put them into iMovie, that part was easy. The brain work that went behind it…Eh, not so much. See the tricky part was getting those pieces of media and constructing one story that actually made sense. But we’ve had plenty of practice learning how to do all sorts of things, so this was nothing! I used five images, and in the last one, I used a piece of media that was in the recycling bin. For the suspense background music in the beginning, I used freesound to my full benefit!

The story:

Paul the pug has always been infamously jealous of everyone around him, and he hates not being the center of attention. One day, to punish Paul for eating all the treats in the house, Lindsey (the owner) decides to go the store to buy only the cat treats. However, the three cats (Mickey, Minnie, and Moe) were in for a surprise because Paul had enough. He decides that if Lindsey wants to get treats for the cats and not him…He’ll make his own!

Yes, my story was a little morbid. No, I have no regrets since it made me laugh for a good five minutes straight!

This is my submission for the “Post-Photographic Portrait” assignment.
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License.

Doctorow’s books are a mix of science fiction, fantasy and ethical dilemmas.

Using one of the photos from the fortheremix site ,  some simple text, and a brush for Photoshop I made a clean cover for a book, or even poster.  The original is in the 14X20 600dpi range, but the copy attached here is just a smashed down 3X4in version 72dpi.

I chose to obscure the subject’s face (Doctorow) to play into the ambiguity I wanted the viewer to begin to feel even before they began the book.  A glimpse into the mind f— blow they are about to participate in by reading the story.

That’s why we have signs.

My next assignment this week was to recycle some old media from DS106.

We had to use five different pieces of media and two different kinds (image, audio, or video).

I chose six photos and two sound clips.

I didn’t want to include text, so I hope the story comes across anyways. I used pictures from campus because I’m feeling rather sad about graduating — even though I’ll be living on campus next year, I won’t be taking classes here. So a female student is walking on campus to get to her class on a beautiful day. She parks her bike under the same sign every day. One day, she comes back and sees it has been burnt up by a smoker and screams!

Tutorial using Popcorn Maker

1. Find your media!

I used the DS106 media bin. I looked around for a few minutes and tried to connect pieces. If you’re limited in your media, like I was, I would try looking for the sounds/video clips first since those will usually be the most scarce. I found two sound clips: birds chirping + a clip with fire burning something then a woman’s scream. With those two in mind, I looked at the photos and images and tried to build a story around it.

2. Upload the media somewhere.

To use audio and video with  Popcorn Maker, you have to upload the media to YouTube or SoundCloud. I only used sound, so I uploaded both of them to SoundCloud.

For the images, I found that Popcorn Maker was being moody and kept rotating my images in weird ways. So, to remedy this, I uploaded them to Imageshack. You can use whichever site works best for you, though.

3. Once you have your media uploaded, you go to the Popcorn Maker site and hit the Start a Project button to create a new piece.

4. Add your music and video first under the Media tab. This way, you have somewhere to put your pictures so they can relate to the music/sounds.

5. Add your images under the Events tab.

Because my images were rather small on the preview, I enlarged them by clicking and dragging the corners.

6. Arrange your images to create your story on the timeline.

7. Once you are finished, you hit save, and voila!  A finished Popcorn Maker story.

I used to like popcorn…

This week, I had to remix a video using Mozilla Popcorn Maker.

This is the video I was working with.

This was not my favorite assignment…

I hated the interface for the editor. There are no clear directions on how to use it at all. The drag and place function stinks because it just doesn’t do what you want it to do. You can’t rotate your media which basically makes it impossible to do anything really interactive. I was disappointed, to be honest.

Nevertheless, I got through this.

1. Harlem Shake Video

I added Harlem Shake to the video because I find it funny. No, a student didn’t create it, but it would have been funny if one did.

2. Octopie — “It’s Time”

I just liked the song. Found it on the front of SoundCloud’s rock page.

3. War of the Worlds First Edition

As a bookish nerd, I figured a very valuable item found in a end table would be a first edition book. War of the Worlds seemed funny…

4. Passport

I was deliberately being obvious. I know we’re supposed to do something unexpected but I feel like no one else is going to put a passport in there… and well you need to one to travel.

5. Video from Australia during winter

Since he was bringing sunscreen, bathing suit, etc., I thought it would be funny to send him to Australia during the middle of winter.

Overall, I really disliked the Popcorn Maker. I probably should have just gone to a video editor that I know and work well with, but I did try to challenge myself with the Mozilla editor. And boy, did I.

Give Me the Green Light**

To finish my 6 stars of mashup assignments, I completed the assignment, What Color is Your World? The point was to choose a colour to photograph throughout the day.

I chose green, because it’s literally EVERYWHERE I turn. Instead of photographing it, I took short videos of the things that were green. I didn’t realize before how much green stuff I have in my house!

Once I had all my videos, I opened them in MPEG Streamclip to convert them from mp4 to avi and opened them in Window Movie Maker.  I muted all of my short clips and fond the song Green Light by John Legend to play in the background.

6/6 stars.

What is Reality?****

To complete the 6 stars worth of mashup assignments from the ds106 assignment bank, I started with an assignment called Movie Trailer Mashup, worth 4 stars.  I saw someone do this when my ds106 adventure first started, so I’m glad I came across it again! There were a lot of possibilities I wanted to do, such as Avatar/Pocahontas and Curious George/King Kong, but the audio and video from each one just didn’t go well with the other. I decided to do Inception and the Matrix, since they sort of revolve around the same sort of idea–a dream world.

I found a Matrix Trailer on YouTube and an Inception Trailer, and downloaded them via KeepVid. I then opened MPEG Streamclip to convert the videos from mp4 to avi and opened them in Windows Movie Maker.  Finally, I muted the audio of the Matrix trailer and only snagged the audio from the Inception trailer, and put the two together!

4/6 stars.

After I was done, I decided to google the other possibilities I was originally thinking to see what someone else did. I found the following trailer mashups:

Avatar/Pocahontas

King Kong/Curious George

Everyday Green

To complete my 6 stars of mashup assignments this week, I decided to do the 2 star assignment “What Color is your world?

In this assignment you had to take pictures of one specific color throughout your day. In addition, you needed to find a song with the word of the color you picked in it. There was already an example of blue and pink. Since those were my go to colors in everyday life, I decided I needed to go with something different. So I chose  the color green.

I snapped all the pictures using my iPhone and uploaded them into I movie. I then went to google and searched for a song with the world “Green” in it. There are actually a lot of songs, but I really couldn’t find a song that I loved. Then I found “Green Light” by John Legend. I really like the beat and his voice so I just went with it. The pictures you will see in this quick movie are:

  • Green Lanterns- I see these when I wake up in the morning
  • Green pen, bedspread, and wrapper- From work and breakfast this morning
  • Green Tree and Grass- Yay for spring time!
  • Green Bow- On my gear shifter thing in the car
  • Green Smoothie-I had a meeting off campus so I decided on a smoothie for lunch!
  • Green Wegman bag- After my meeting I had to do a little grocery shopping and picked up dinner.
  • Green beans- Yummy Dinner
  • Green Tea- Delicious end to the night

Here’s my work in iMovie:

Everyday Green ScreenShot

And here is my short movie, enjoy!
