Thumbs Up For Ebert

Just a week after the Spring 2013 ds106 class applied Roger Ebert’s How to Read a Movie to analyze scenes of movies, he went on to that big movie theater in the sky.

For this assignment, create a tribute to Ebert’s love of movies; but do more than just make a montage of clips of him. Put him in context with film characters, musicians, or place him inside one of the movies he loved or hated. Or mash him up, Do anything to show some respect for Ebert’s devotion to not only appreciating film but teaching others.

The Future of Humanity: A Demotivational Collection

Another adventure with Random Assignment Ideas! This time, it’s demotivational posters! Both were created using Motivator.

So my dad is a mall Santa, and this past Christmas my stepmom and I went to spy on him while he was working. When it was the turn of a little girl and her brother to visit Santa and get their picture taken, she immediately started crying. To calm her down, one of her parents gave her their iPhone to play with and she immediately stopped crying. And completely ignored Santa, the photographer, all attempts to get her to look at the camera. Her attention was completely consumed by the phone. So I snapped a picture of her (yes, that’s my natural-bearded Santa dad in the picture).

I could comment on how it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when kids are more interested in technology than imagination, but honestly, I remember being terrified of Santa at that age. Weren’t we all? And it’s great that technology can serve as a distraction and comfort for frightened children. Though the Brothers Grimm might disagree…

motivatord13c5fa3493a0b62d878df76f5b34b4d3c60155bMany moons ago, I saw this entertaining juxtaposition of Tweets and found it so funny I took a screencapture. And then it sat on my phone for a long, long time, until I was looking through my photos to find good demotivational ones. And I saw it, and thought “YES!!!”

In the ed tech community, Twitter is touted as a great networking tool and way of building community. It’s not uncommon for professional group discussions to be held on Twitter with specific “chat” hashtags, every event has a Twitter back channel, and even ds106 uses Twitter as the fastest way to reach out to other students/participants and the instructors. It’s great for connecting with people!

It’s also a social networking site originally made popular by celebrities (or their personal assistants posing as them) and features such pop culture gems as #yolo, the #BigBird presidential debate fiasco, the timely marketing campaigns during the Super Bowl black-out, and more celebrity meltdowns and outbursts than can be reasonably catalogued by a single Top 10 (or 25) list. And it’s a cool storytelling medium for this reason. But is it really a bastion of open inquiry?

To be sure, Twitter is an awesome tool for creativity, sharing, and free speech. Heck, just look at the role it played in the Arab Spring. But let’s keep things in perspective people. After all, yolo.

Sure Letterma……. I believe you…sure

So I had this other mash up interview I did with David Letterman. Was flipping through channels and saw NBC which sparked me to post this. Will do my detail tomorrow or later.

New Ringtone?

For my next audio assignment I did Make Your Own Ringtone which was worth two stars.   The instructions for this assignment were “trim, join end-to-end (cut/paste), and/or play side-by-side audio files in order to create your very own ringtone. Ringtones should be a maximum or 40 seconds to conserve phone memory (besides, most cell phones don’t ring longer than 30 seconds or so…the extra 10 seconds is just in case). Be creative, you might want to actually use it on your phone.”

I got excited for this one when I saw it.  I love the idea of mash-ups so I was excited to do a short one for my ringtone.  I played around for a little while with different songs and ended up coming across a video of Taylor Swift doing a mash up of her song Stay Stay Stay and the song Ho Hey by the Lumineers at her concert.  I totally loved it and decided to try to do these two songs for my ringtone.

Isn’t that great? Obviously mine wasn’t quite as creative and smooth as hers since I just combined the two recordings of the the songs but I am pretty pleased with how it turned out.

I ended up importing Stay Stay Stay first.  I wanted the songs to overlap a little so I ended up cutting the end of the chorus (which is purely instrumental) and repeating it three times at the end.  I then imported Ho Hey and lined that up right after the words of Stay Stay Stay ended.  I then faded out Stay Stay Stay after Ho Hey began.

Here is what the finished product looked like in audacity.

And here is what the final product sounded like.

Hope you like it! One more star to go!

Ringtone tonin it

One of my favorite things to do in my free time is take one of my favorite songs and make it into a ringtone. It’s a simple process through itunes that doesn’t involve much work, or at least it doesn’t anymore since I do it so frequently. So when I saw this assignment, I was excited. It involves taking two songs, and mashing them up into ringtone. Simple enough, except for the creative aspect of having to pick two songs that go together relatively well. After going through a grand array of songs, about 1000 in my itunes library, I choose Stacy’s Mom (and if you don’t know this song, you should probably re-evauluate your life) and I also picked 1985, another good classic for me. I used audacity to mash the two songs, and then the envelope option so the two songs swell together rather than just have a huge clump, I also attempted this fade in/fade out dj spin between the two songs. My audio clip is just below, feel free to download for your own use (although I did not own any rights whatsoever to either song!!). This assignment was two ?’s.

Maxwell’s date with ambiance

Hey So I am just trying another assignment for the Sardonic Mashups, in the DS106 Sound Bank. So for this one I decided to use the GEICO commercial, where Maxwell the pig is on a date and is waiting in the car after calling for a tow truck using his GEICO app. For me this commercial is funny but I felt I could add a little more to it. So what I did was to get the audio using Video 2 mp3 once again.

So what I did was to open all audio files I would use in Audacity using the, “Import File” under File. Then using the, “Shift Tool” again I was able to line up the original commercial with the area of Elton John’s song that I wanted to go with the commercial. What I wanted do was to take out the silence between the Maxwell and his date’s dialogue and replace it with a record scratch for the effect I wanted. So using the “Selection” tool I simply highlighted the section of audio I wanted out (after zooming in to see the wave properly) then to Edit then Clip Boundaries then use “Split”. What this did was to separate the audio into 3 parts. The before the silence, the silence and after the silence.  So I just highlighted and deleted this silence and copy and pasted the record scratch into it’s place, and “Mix and Render” the 3 sections back as one. For the audio before the now added scratch it was a bit fast for my song so I highlighted that section, then under Effect went to “change Speed” where I slowed it down just a bit. After I worked on that part, I just used the “Split” tool on the Elton John song then deleted the excess sound as well. But then I wanted to use a cover to Hound Dog, I prefer the version performed in Grease the movie by Sha Na Na. I placed a selected  part of it after the record scratch and plays with the end of the commercial. Most importantly I wanted the music to sound like the radio was playing softly in the background so I also had to lower the volume of those sections so that it didn’t drown out the original commercial. After I was satisfied, a now simple select all and, “Mix and Render”.

Here are the sounds I originally used:

1. Maxwell the GEICO pig goes on a date

2. Elton John – Can You Feel The Love

3. Record Scratch

4. Sha Na Na – Hound Dog

The name of these songs are…..

This sound clip was designed for the DS106 Assignment Audio Bank, for the “The Contest Nobody Could Win“, assignment. I did this quite similar to the Li*e Strong Sardonic Mashup I did earlier this week. I just randomly took specific parts of a few sounds to create a clip as the assignment asked. This was done in Audacity as well and each audio clip copied and pasted to next to each other and  then simply “Mixed and Rendered”. I would have listed the songs I use but sorry you have to guess, its not that hard.
