Cindrella II : My Best Friend’s Wedding ****

Movie Trailer Mash-Up ****

This assignment tasked me to mash-up the audio of one trailer with the video of another. I knew I wanted to Cinderella II: Dreams Come True because the audio/visual for this trailer is very simple. Then, I looked around for movies about girl looking for true love. I looked at problably 15 trailers before I remembered “My Best Friend’s Wedding”. I loved the ending audio for the trailer and used that (through audacity) to overlay it (through Window Movie Maker) to the video of Cinderella II.

I loved that the story is very similar, but now there is a deeper mroe adult twist to Cinderella II.  Now insteado of Cinderella having the most wonderful marry, the movie is about the drama before they get married. In fact, there might even be another women! … you’ll have to watch to find out.

This assingment was really fun and I only used skill that I learned through previous assignments. For example, I used the PWNYouTube bookmark in order to save the trailer as mp4. Then, I used Windows Movie Maker to upload the clip. I edited the part and length of the audio through audacity . Putting together was pretty simple, I delayed the start of the audio via the Music Menu. Then, exported to YouTube!

Recycle the Media Tutorial

Here is a tutorial for someone who needs help to make a video for this assignment:

Recycle the Media

During the Fall 2012 iteration of ds106 taught at UMW, we collected media from students that was unused in their previous work uploaded to http://dropitto.me/ds106phonar (the password was “photos4life” newly added media might take some time to be moved- we have to feed the squirrels that do this manual labor). The content was migrated to a public download site, which contains at least 150 images, audio and video http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO.
Your task for this assignment is to mash-up at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types (e.g. audio and image, image and video). The story most likely would be done as a video, but see if you can make these different kinds of media make sense as the content. What kind of recycled story can you make out of this cast off media?

This is a 3 star assignment

TUTORIAL:

The first thing you have to do is go to the website: http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO  This is where you can see all the recycled media that you can choose from.  What I did was pick two sounds and six pictures, that related to taking a nature walk.  But this is the part of the assignment where you can be creative in your own way.  Find any kind of combination of 7 different media types that go together.  I recommend making a video of all the images and sounds that you collected.  To download this media to your computer click on the image and in the right hand corner there is an arrow facing downward.  Then you will be able to save any of the media to your computer so you can use it in your video.

tutorial

The rest of this tutorial deals with using Windows Movie Maker:

The first thing you will have to do is open Window’s Movie Maker.  The next thing you will have to do is add photos to your video.  After that you will then add the music to your video.

tutorial part 2

You can then play your video and adjust the sound volumes using the video and music tools circled in this image below

tutorial3

Making the video is fairly easy.  This is where you can be creative in making your own video.  There are many options in Window’s Movie maker using certain themes, adjusting the volume of the sounds.  You can arrange the order you want your images to appear as well as working with color schemes and opening and ending credits. When you are satisfied with your video you will then save your video and upload your video to YouTube.  If you are having trouble uploading your video to YouTube from Window’s Movie Maker this tutorial on YouTube shows you how to convert your video into the right format that YouTube accepts.

I hope this tutorial helps you in working on this assignment Recycle the Media.  If there is something that is unclear written in this post please feel free to comment below and I will clarify what I mean.  Good luck on this assignment!

This is a 3 star assignment

Before working on this assignment I looked at a previously done assignment called:

Cat? A ds106 Recycled Media Assignment: This assignment was really well done.  I like how it started and ended with the cat.  I also like how this short video has a scary theme to it as you are wondering what happened to the cat.  The recycled media was used very well and the sounds went well with what was happening during the video.  I also really liked how it zoomed in on the cat at the very end.

After looking through all the recycled media in the recycling bin, I decided to create a story with photos about a nature walk that I’m taking.  For this I took 6 pictures and 2 sounds from the recycling bin that I thought related best to nature and things you would see on a nature walk.  The story I created with recycled media represents me taking a nature walk, and the things I see while walking around outside.  The starting image is of a house.  This represents me leaving my house to start my day with a nature walk.  The sound in the background for most of the movie is called forest birds.  This is the sound represents the birds I hear while outside on my walk.  The next picture shows me turning a corner and walking by some pretty fall trees.  The following picture shows me walking down the stairs into the forest where there is nature.  The next picture shows a leaf I found on my nature walk.  Then I look up a the nice blue sky and see some hot air balloons.  The last sound that is at the very end of this video is called swish, which represents the sound of the hot air balloons.  That there ends my nature walk.  I wish that there was a sound for footsteps in the recycling bin that sound like I’m actually walking.  I really enjoyed this assignment and using recycled media for my story.  I like how I can reuse what other people do not end up needing.

The DS106 Basement

Recycle The Media — MISSION: DS106 using media from http://minus.com/mvKXzhhcO mashup at least 7 different pieces of this media to make a new story, and use at least 2 different types.

Looking at the ds106 phonar recycle bin my eye was caught by a lot of bars, and I started thinking of being in a cage or going through a series of bars. I started just downloading a bunch of files, listening to the audio. The audio from the bit-fall-mona .mp4 video sounded ominous so I grabbed the movie.
When I started up imovie I veered away from the bars to start on the beach. I like beaches and have occasionally recorded sounds on the beach, there was a nice swish in the bin.
The scream, I imported into garageband, trimmed off the fire and added a female to male voice transformer.
This was to go with the face, trimmed off the icon, added some noise in Fireworks. I originally exported as a transparent png to overlay in imovie but could not get it looking right quickly.
The wave sound fades out as the bit-fall-mona sound fades in. There is the odd filter and only one transition.
So take a trip to the DS106 basement, where old gifs are jammed in dusty boxes.

Video Assignments

The first assignment I did these two weeks was Play by Play. I really enjoyed inserting my own commentary into a video that I watched. It was a cool experience to have my own input and to hear it play outloud.

The second assignment I did this week was Return to the Silent Era. It was really fun to turn a trailer for a movie and make it “silent movie-esque.” It took a lot of time to add all of the captions to the video, but it turned out really well and flowed easily from one phrase to the next.

The third assignment I did this week was Character/Genre Mashup. This was definitely my favorite assignment of these past two weeks but absolutely took the longest. It took forever to search through videos to find ONE scene (sometimes two) that I wanted. Each clip lasted about 10 seconds or so, which meant having to find quite a few to cover a song that lasts about three and a half minutes.

Reflection

It was really cool being able to tell stories through video this week. I found that it was exciting to see what kind of changes I could make that would impact everything about that particular video.

I Don’t Know Why You Say Good Bye, I Say God Be With Ye

Get the Beatles reference? If you don’t, promptly YouTube search the song “Hello, Goodbye” by the Beatles before continuing to read. There really is no excuse. Anyways, I first heard about the origins of the word goodbye from a Spanish professor explaining why people say “adios” in Spanish. He explained that it wasn’t uncommon in many other languages to reference a deity when wishing a person good fortune in their travels from you. In English, it is said that the word goodbye is a sort of mashup of the words “God be with ye.” So when I read the assignment description for Vernacular Video, it took me a while, but I remembered what my professor had said about goodbye, and decided to use it. I immediately wanted to flip flash cards for the assignment, as if to portray a feeling of studying off of them. It was hard to read the cards and shoot the video at the same time, so I had my friend Victor flip the cards and shoot the video while I read. The main problem was my horrible stuttering again. I try so hard, but I’m just a natural stutterer. I’m not as bad as I used to be, but it still frustrates me, and when I get frustrated, I stutter. It’s a vicious cycle. Regardless, the point of the assignment was to tell the history of a word in an interesting way, and I feel accomplished. Ta Dah!

DS106 Food Time With Cap’n Markish

The “McGangbang” is a food product made out of two McDonald’s sandwiches off of the dollar menu that causes much controversy amongst people who like to cause controversy over stupid things. People will argue with you about many different things, including where it originates, what goes in it, and what the name of it is. This has made me come up with the subgroup of the sandwich called the “Virginia McGangbang.”
I feel like it’s important to point out that I do not condone the name of the sandwich, but this brings me to my first point. The sandwich is actually recognized by the name “McGangbang” in many McDonald’s (especially in my area), so much so that you can actually order it by name. People can literally walk up to the counter and say “I’ll have a McGangbang,” and the person will make it for you, without the extra bread. Thus, the name sticks.
Most people agree that the sandwich originates from Daytona Beach, Florida, where you take a Spicy McChicken sandwich, and put it between the patties of a McDouble. The main problem with this, is that not all McDonald’s carry Spicy McChickens. Thus, the variations come in to spice up the sandwich. The most important concept, is the fundamental blueprint of using sandwiches off of the dollar menu, and combining them.
The way I was taught to make it the first time, is the way I stick to making it. I actually thoroughly enjoy this artery clogging sensation enough to make it from time to time. I was told to buy a McDouble, and add the Big Mac sauce (Mac Sauce for short). You also buy a McChicken and add cheese, because heck, who doesn’t want more cheese? You then split the patties down the middle and insert your McChicken sandwich into the middle, and mash it together. The result is a beefy, chicken-y goodness that can only come from the mind of a broke college student who was tired of eating the same things every day. Another development is that the McGangbang has led to the creation of a more expensive and larger sandwich entitled the “Man Sandwich” that you can also order by name at many McDonalds. The concept of ordering off of the dollar menu is neglected, but the same principle of splitting patties and adding chicken sandwiches is there. The Man Sandwich is consisted of a Double Quarter-Pounder with Cheese; add Mac Sauce, and a Country Style Chicken Sandwich; add cheese.
When I read the requirements for the assignment Cooking Show, I felt almost entitled to share this delectable treat with the DS106 world. My friend Victor and I set off to the nearest McDonald’s, and acted out the making of this food of Gods. I asked my friend to use a recording technique where he comes up from behind me, and then sits down at the table, as almost personable, yet had an almost Nightly News feel to it. I asked him to shoot the scene lower than usual to emphasize the sandwich, and then raise up and emphasize me at the conclusion. Before he began recording, I thought it would be funny to use the receipt as a scene card. I feel like the effects worked well to give me the look I was looking for. One more point, I can’t stop laughing in these videos. Enjoy!

Movie Supercut It “Breaking Glass”

This class assignment was to create a short movie supercut about movies scenes which has a certain connection. It could be any connection such as a rain scene or slow motion scene or laughing. For my supercut I chose to use scenes where the actors/actresses smash through glass. Most movie scenes have these relating scenes.  I used iMovie to edit the clips that I downloaded from youtube. It was pretty simple the program is very user friendly. This assignment can be found in the Video Assignments for ds106. Most of the scenes are from well known hollywood films.

Cat? A ds106 Recycled Media Assignment

Arggh, since my hippie hosted main blog is down for the count tonight, I shall hang my blog post here. In prepping the work for next week’s ds106 section on Remix, I needed/wanted to do one of the assignments we just added- Recycle the Media in which we are charged with making a mashup from the content that students shared a few weeks back- their left over, unused bits of media from previous assignments. We loaded over 150 of these to a site on minus.com to make available for download and mixing up.

So without much more ado, my story about a cat:

This story was driven by the primarily the “flames and woman’s scream sound” which lef me to the grill one, and from there, well. this.

So we have a cat who is missing. Dad just tries to say “it’s ok” (he does not care about the cat). The little kid passes the blame. And now there is meat sizzling on the barbecue (insert wilhlem scream). What about that cat? Where is it?

The media used included:

I replicated the short “Ahh” sounds 3 times by option click dragging the audio track. I also copied and pasted 3 more times the short Shining Clip. From there it was a matter of overlaying some titles

This was a second edit, I added a bit more because the first one was a tad morbid.

Spaceships

In honor of Firefly’s 10th Anniversary of it’s cancellation I decided to do a tribute assignment to them in the Genre/Song Mash up. in this we were to take clips from varies TV shows/movies that exhibit a similar aspect and set it to a popular song of today.

For Mine I chose Alligator Sky by Owl City and did a science fiction style spaceship motief featuring shots of Serenity, the space ship from Firefly. I thought the song lined up perfectly with the shots, and I tried to capture the emotional bond between Captain Reynolds and Serenity. Clips include many shots from star wars, star trek, Firefly and others. I hope you enjoy your flight, ad remember to be good to your ship.
