Mashup Assignment – Holiday Mashup

A simple enough assignment, taking elements of your 3 favorite holidays, and combining them into one image. If it wasn’t clear, I went with Halloween, Christmas, and Independence Day. I’ve always been a fan of Halloween; I love the combination of Autumn weather and the atmosphere around the holiday. Christmas is associated with family and vacations; as I’ve grown older, I care less about the gifts and more about spending time with the people I love. Fourth of July has always been a ton of fun, and is a nice patriotic holiday; another big family event day. I found three transparent images on Google, brought them into Photoshop, resized them, and layered them correctly. Not much to it!

Mashup Assignment – Consumer Mashup

This assignment is very similar to the design assignment The Ultimate Merger, so I have some experience working with logos. However, I connected the assignment to my character this time, so changing it up a bit. I took the logo of Smith & Wesson, a gun manufacturer, of which my character owns a gun from. I figured ammo would be something he would buy often, so it’s fitting to place their logo on the backside of a bullet. Here’s the original logo:

And my version is below:

s&w

The process was fairly simple. In Photoshop, I created a couple circles, and added gradients and textures to them. I found the font similar to that of the logo, which was Georgia, and added in the manufacturer and type of ammo around the bullet. Then, I embossed to give the edges and imprinted effect, both on the font and the interior logo. Most of the time spent was being finnicky with the settings, not actually finding the techniques to do this.

Chandler Mashup

For this assignment, I had to create a mashup of one of my favorite characters and some scenes they have been in. I chose to do Chandler from Friends because he’s awesome. I chose a bunch of my favorite scene’s of him. My all time favorite is when he gets stuck in an ATM vestibule with a Victoria’s Secret model and freaks out. I made a small title screen and used scene’s from our Friends DVDs in Windows Movie Maker.

Tutorial for a Mashup assignment

I am going to show you how I made a mashup design for a DS106 assignment called “This Doesn’t Belong Here”, which you can find in the DS106 Assignment bank by clicking on the link above. In this assignment, we had to mash 2 movie scenes together.

I am going to go through each step that I took to make this design! Feel free to comment below with questions.

1

First, I googled “iconic star wars scenes”

2

Then, I googled ‘cheshire cat’

3

I then opened up http://www.canva.com, a website that I have come to love through this class! I use it for alot for design and visual assignments. To the left, there is a tab you can click on called “Uploads”. You can simply drag and drop the image you want to chooe, or you can upload it from your files. Once uploaded, you can insert it into the blank canvas.

4

I then did the same thing for the cheshire cat image. I made it a little smaller, though. It’s really to resize things on Canva.

5

I then double-clicked the chesire cat picture. As you can see, there is a transparency tool you can use to make it more/less transparent.

6

I then used Windows Photo Viewer to rotate my picture. Then, bam, I was done!

I hope this helps!

Holiday Mashup

For this Assignment we had to put our three holidays together in one picture. I ended up using just my Mac Preview for it, because I don’t know how to use photoshop or anything else that is fancy. This assignment was worth 3 1/2 starts. I would give it 4 just because it was kind of hard, to put the photos together, and its extra hard for the people who aren’t tech savvy.

Website Mashup

My last assignment for the week is my last mashup one. I selected to do Twittr which is worth 2 1/2 stars bringing my final total to 13 stars. This assignment tells you to used a photo editing program to mashup two webpage names. First, I decided that I wanted to use Google and Yahoo. I went online and saved images of each logo and then cropped them each in half. I then uploaded them into Paintbrush on my Mac so I could combine them. This was fairly easy to do except for editing the images so that they were the same size so they would flow nicely. I like how it turned out! It could be a new search engine that  combines sources from both Yahoo and Google. I wish I made the pics a little smaller though because the “Y” is cut off just a tad.

Emoji Mashup!

For my second mashup assignment of the week I chose to complete the assignment titled, “Mashing Friends and Emojis” because it seemed like it would be fun. In order to complete this assignment I first looked up emoji images. I chose about four emoji faces that a person could possibly replicate. So, I called my little brother over and asked him to make the same expression as each different emoji face. His best expression that matched an emoji was his surprised/scream face. So, I took a picture of him making that face and mashed it together with the surprise/scream emoji face!

This assignment was worth four and a half stars contributing to this week’s 12 star requirement.

Talie’s Mashup video!

This is my first Mashup assignment! This week we have learned about the difference between mashups and remixes. As such, one of our tasks this week is to complete 12 stars of mashup assignments, so the first one I chose to complete was the assignment titled “Mash Thyself, Before Ye Trash Thyself”. This assignment directed me to use some of my previous pieces of work and mash them together into one assignment video. Some of my previous assignments I chose to include in this mash up assignment were Talie’s Documentary, Talie’s Six Second Art, and Talie’s 5 Second Film Joke. I chose these three pieces of work because they all involve my created western character as such, making the mashup assignment seem to come together more seamlessly. Also, this mashup assignment fulfills the requirement that one assignment focuses on my created western character. I used Windows Movie Maker to create this mashup assignment. I began with Talie’s documentary and split it up and intertwined my other two assignments and then ended the mashup with Talie’s documentary. I added some transitions with voice recordings to help the mashup seem a bit smoother.

This assignment was worth four stars contributing to this week’s 12 star requirement.

Mashing Friends and Emojis

My second mashup assignment I did this was Mashing Friends with Emojis which is worth 4 stars making my total now 7 1/2 stars for the week thus far. This assignment tells you to take a picture of someone who is acting like an emoji face. I had just taken this picture last week of my boyfriend’s niece and thought it would look so cute with the sunglass emoji picture. I did this by saving the emoji pic online and then mashing it with the picture of the Karleigh (the baby) using PicStich on the iPhone. I liked how it turned out, except for the quality of the emoji picture!

Above is a picture of my sister on a family vacation and right below that are the two emojis that fit her expression. I found the emojis online (google image search) and edited them into an image together using freephototool.com. What do you guys think of the real life/emoji mashup/comparison?
