What Happened on March 31st?

“Create a short documentary, no more than 20 minutes in length. Make it on any topic of your choosing! Be sure to cite your sources, though! Make it on anything that interests: history, sports, music, movies, etc. Just make it informative and engaging!”

Create A Short Documentary

So just to start off, I did make the documentary less than 10 minutes, but I have no sources besides my brain.

So this was a little bit of a stretch. Both of this assignment and me. This assignment was meant for documentaries about real things, but I made it for the event that happened in my Character Point of View Video. Cause something weird happened, and people are trying to figure out what. That’s close enough to a documentary, right?

I have never quite done something like this before, with so much acting on camera. And boy was it weird. Not only to do but to watch back again and again as I edited it.

I will say though, as silly and bad and cringe as this is, I am very proud of it. I had a vision that, at the time, seemed impossible. There were times when I thought that I’d back out and do a different assignment, but I stuck to the story and made it work. So let me walk you through everything I did to make this awful thing that I am fiercely proud of.

I wrote the script and revised it twice. (1,456 words total)

I put up that background screen, which took longer than you might think.

I brushed out that wig.

I dressed up in four different costumes and acted my heart out on zoom to get the visual recordings.

I voice acted the interviewer and also SA Marvin.

Then I edited it all together on iMove. Cut out my fumbles and added in the audio, as well as sound effects for the door, and visual effects for the glitch things. I would pay good money for a glitch feature on iMovie, but alas. All of my glitches are hand-crafted.

I wore masks cause not only did it hide some of my face which was nice, both for my own peace of mind and also less acting pressure, but it differentiated the characters. At least I think so. It is the same kind of mask, which I wore because I find that anything other than a medical one muffles the voice too much. Maybe it didn’t help. I also tried my best to make my voice sound different for all the characters, and added some effects to try and help with that, but I don’t know how effective that was. It all kind of sounds the same to me. But then again, I have been practically breathing this project for the past few days.

So now you know what happened on Monday, March the 31st.

Julie Andrews… the animal whisperer

I honestly just Googled “Movie Posters” to start this assignment. When I saw The Sound of Music, I knew it was perfect. It’s such a classic movie, and the movie poster could be made funny in so many different ways.

Immediately when I saw her arms reaching out I either wanted to make her extremely muscular, or have something reach up to her. I soon realized it was extremely difficult to photoshop muscular arms on her, so I simply added animals. I started out by finding a high quality movie poster for the movie. I then looked for animals to use in the photo. I used PicsArt to cut out each of the animals. Then I simply overlayed them onto the photo.

I could’ve done something fun with the name of the movie. But I kinda think it’s funny having a bunch of animals on a movie poster that mentions music. It gives the illusion that the animals will be singing in the movie.

Moon VHS

For today’s design assignment, I chose to create a VHS design for a movie released after 2005. The idea was to make it look like it was manufactured in the 80’s.

I’m still not sure I hit the 80s mark, but I don’t think it looks modern either. I chose the 2009 movie, Moon. I searched Creative Commons for a base image to work from and found the below image.

“Humans on the moon” by chrisspurgeon is marked with CC PDM 1.0

In Photoshop, I cropped out the included white border and added an additional background layer to give the image a warped texture. I thought of renting VHS way back when and how the plastic wrapping on older tapes got wrinkly and created weird creases/bulges across the covers. I also added this to the moon picture, as well as played with brightness, contrast, and posterizing the image.

For the title, I decided to use happy face images (also with added texture) in the o’s. I still don’t love the outcome, but I didn’t want to take them back out either. It felt silly enough to remind me of old VHS tapes and is relevant to the movie.

As some final touches, and inspired form the assignment instructions/Best Buy, I create some stickers to add to the case. I created some flat Drama and Sci-Fi genre stickers as well as a beat up “Be Kind, Please Rewind!” sticker in the bottom corner.

One thing I like about these different assignments, is getting more used to Photoshop. I felt quite a bit more comfortable during this assignment than those I worked on earlier in the semester.

Stop Motion Video

One of my favorite childhood memories was when my dad would surprise my brother and I with homemade stop motion videos that he had made when we were sleeping. For me it was interviews with my Barbie’s and my brother got stop motion dinosaur movies. I now have a deep appreciation for what my dad did those nights.

For this Video Assignment I decided to have some fun with the idea of being stuck in quarantine and using the internet to look at the places I can’t be right now. I collected the knick knacks from around my house and decided to take them on a trip around the globe. It was painstakingly slow and felt silly but I suppose that’s the point. I used the video editing app I used for my documentary to add some fun music and then uploaded it all the Youtube.
It’s not great but enjoy “Knick Knack Outing”!

Coming to America with a Twist

3.5 Stars

I was trying to find out what I could add to this to make it silly. At first, I thought about adding African animals, but that could have been in the real movie poster. So then I decided on aliens, but real aliens are scary. So then I settled on Stitch and his cousins. I think the poster turned out well! It was easier using GIMP because I’ve used it twice already this week.

The Goonies poster.

This is the original assignment link. I chose to involve the 80s within this assignment. Above I took an 80s poster of the movie, “The Goonies,” and made it silly just like the assignment asked. I used Canva to create this. I decided to add the social media link images at the bottom of the poster to make it look like the goonies have social media. I also added the location symbol at the top to show that the goonies also have their location on where they are. I had fun with this assignment. This assignment was 3 1/2 stars and I highly recommend creating your own.

80s Battle Angels?

Good evening everyone! Get ready for a weird visual assignment I completed today.

My task was to edit some weird eyes on people akin to anime characters or Alita: Battle Angel…Although I got a little crazy with the photo editor. Assignment link located HERE

I’m not very experienced with photo editing, so I wanted to try something silly before I jump in to creating art or something with little room for mistakes.

I decided to give some popular 80s movie characters a new bug-eyed look along with doing some interesting face twisting for your viewing pleasure.

Doc and Marty, but creepier

I went on to Pixlr to see what I could do to enlarge the eyes in the photo and there was luckily, an enlargement tool. Easy enough. However, things got funky with the Breakfast Club kids when I found twisty tools in the editor.

No wonder these students were outcasts at their school…

I made myself laugh this morning making these so I hope you guys smile too. It’s amazing what a little twisting can do to make someone unrecognizable and artificial. It’s like backwards airbrushing that celebrities do to their photos.

I didn’t think anything could ruin Patrick Swayze. I stand corrected.

For my take on Dirty Dancing here, I discovered the minimizing tool. By enlarging the eyes, making other features smaller became even better. Baby is one of my favorite movie characters because I’ve always thought she was adorable! Now look what I’ve done to her!

On a deeper level, even though I made silly pictures, it was interesting to look at the faces of such iconic characters and see what I could do to twist them up. Even just enlarging the eyes made such a difference in dismantling their perfect idealized movie appearance. If you are ever feeling down about how you look, try this out!

King’s Sky mashup

Hey there everyone, today I’m tacking a few more stars, 4.5 more- to be exact. I took on the movie trailer mashup assignment with some ideas already in my head. I initially wanted to mix Skyfall with a Mr. Bean type of character to cut the serious spyishness with a buffoon, but the difference in the clips that I sourced was just too extreme. Instead, I used another silly villain. I remembered that one of my favorite parts of the Kingsman movie was that the villain was kind of the comic relief of the film, which was something that I had never seen before in the spy theme.

That being said, I mixed the two movies by making the typical badass Bond montage, but also mixed in the funny bits of Richmond Valentine- the villain from Kingsman. To make the movie, I simply screen recorded both trailers on my phone, and then clipped out the parts that I want/ didn’t want to use. After I had a good chunk of clips, I threw them all into iMovie on my cell phone and blended them together. I carefully selected transitions that best fit the scene/dialogue- so if you pay close attention you’ll be able to see the differences in some of my scene transitions.

Let me know down below what you think! Did the villain make you laugh at all? If you hated it, be sure to let me know that too!

The Recaller

Create a commercial featuring an item that you have invented that would be extremely useful to your favorite movie or TV Show character. Try to be as creative and abstract as possible. Must include sound effects or background music and be at least 20 seconds in length.

Assignment Bank- Audio Assignments

For this assignment, I decided to invent an item to help one of my favorite secret agent characters, Jason Bourne. He had problems remembering his past in all of the movies, so I created a products to blow all of those troubles away. Introducing… the recaller!

The hardest part of this assignment was inventing the product to advertise. I knew that I wanted to make a product for Jason Bourne, so what better product for him than a memory recaller!

I modeled the “recaller” after the neuralyzer in the Men in Black movies that erase your memory. I directly said Jason Bourne’s name in the commercial because he is the reason why this product was invented. The product is certainly affordable at eight low payments of $299.99. That’s nothing to successful spies who have memory loss.

I recorded the commercial to sound kind of like an infomercial where there is always a host that demonstrates how the product is used. I included a clicking sound for the recaller (which was really just a camera shutter sound). I included sounds from an audience like “oohs” and “aahs”. There is music playing in the background that sounds like it could be in a secret agent movie. I am keeping with the secret agent theme because this commercial may be in my group’s radio show, “Super Secret Opinions.” The commercial is very cheesy and silly, but it will make the audience laugh (hopefully).

The World Is Not Enough

Directions: Take an existing movie poster and make it look silly.

I cannot begin to explain how excited I was to make this one. When I read the directions and saw the direction, I immediately thought of the movie, The World is Not Enough. A true James Bond classic.

When I was thinking of the title I also thought of the song “Never Enough,” which was featured on the Greatest Showman. Whenever I hear that song, I think about changing the context to sweet treats, and that’s how I came up with this glorious photo. I created the image on Canva.

I inserted the original movie poster to a black background and then began adding elements of sweet treats. I knew I wanted James Bond to be holding cotton candy, so I was really happy when I was able to accomplish that. I also added the text, “Never Enough!” as a tribute to the song that helped inspire this creation.
