Dialogue Mash-up****

By far, this assignment was the most time consuming. Originally, I had high hopes of making it awesome, seamless, and hilariousness. Alas, that was not going to be the case because of papers, work, and general lack of time/patience. I knew for this mash-up I wanted to use the Peanuts’ “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” in particular Linus’ dialogue. Finding another movie that would further the conversation was difficult. This week so happens to be a “remind Kasey how much she loves Winnie the-pooh week’ with my daily creates and theme versed, I opted to just continue with that idea. I ended up used Tigger’s lines from “Boo To You Too, Winnie the Pooh”.  What I learned is that children’s movies aren’t the best for this because they have music in the back ground which really make the conversation between LInus and Tigger more choppy. Anyway, I spent ours working on extracting dialogue. Then, spent hours moving pieces of dialogue around trying to get a story going. Once I had a story, I messed around with volume, add some intro/traveling/closing music, and finally I did some fade in/ fade out audacity stuff. I’m proud of what I accomplished, but I wish it was so much more. I originally planned for this to be a 5 minute dialogue, but I just could get it there. (Plus the quality would have gone way down.) I hope you enjoyed my mash-up!

Boy Band Mashup

I actually came across this assignment when pushing the random assignment button in the assignment bank. I only need two more stars to complete my 10 for the week and was looking for something simple and fun to do. I came across The Contest Nobody Could Win. The title didn’t really make sense to me for an audio assignment so I decided to pursue it further. It ended up being basically a six song mashup. I hear my roommate doing mashups all the time for the dance team and thought it would be interesting to do. I decided to take boy bands from the 90′s (I honestly have no idea why I came up with this theme). I actually already had all of the songs on my ipod which was very convenient. I just uploaded them to Audacity, and then cut them. I zoomed in to get a good cut on them, then moved them to the order I wanted. It was quite simple (which is exactly what I needed this week) but I had a lot of fun doing it! The songs brought back memories of the good ol’ days.

For some reason, I couldn’t get the file to upload to soundcloud to post it, so I went ahead and just uploaded it using Word Press. The link is above.

Watch That Flame (Seven Day Daily Create Challenge Mashup)

Oi, somehow I never published this post, my own answer to my own challenge. I just found it in my unpublished drafts drawer. Bad Dog.

The first rule of issuing challenges is be prepared to remix your own dog food. Thus I find myself tonight working at doing my own creation for the Seven Day Daily Create Challenge. You can see the whole series of related posts at http://cogdogblog.com/tag/7daychallengetdc

Okay, this is not easy. I scanned the 174 entries that came in (actually there are more now than when I summarized), and downloaded enough media I could use (I had to skip a few flickr photos that were not creative common licensed and some audio that were not set in SoundCloud to be downloaded). A theme somewhat emerged, like something bad that might happen if a flame was turned on somewhere in the world, that triggered a few catastrophic events… Here ya go:

This was assembled in about an hour’s worth of iMovie fiddling. I do a lot of splitting of clips, separating the audio tracks, and using multiple audio layers. I found there are audio effects you can apply to a video clip (that was new to me)

I ended up using three things by our long time ds106 Australia comrade, Rowan Peter- his two audio files and one flickr photo just jelled for me.

Dr Coop’s blue flame was the trigger, Melanie’s video for best technology with the flushing toilet got me started thinking about the world swirling down the drain, which leads to tornado swirls. Mayln’s boiling water was a nice build up to the triggering event (whatever that flame hit). Rowan’s recording of a Japanse telemarketing call seemed to be good backdrop for the mechanical parts of the world that might go into an infinite loop. Norm’s static video of for ds106 (along with his audio “just found a TV”) sounded like a post apocalyptic effort to communicate.

Rowan’s sounds of breathing made for the closing gasp[s over his own eerie desolate photo (natural scene lacking human artifacts)

Here are the media pieces I used:

I totally admit this was a hard assignment, but aren;t those the ones worth doing? So give it a try, you can do any 7 days worth on your own….

Dialogue Mashup

As demonstrated by the Movies Mashup episode of the radio show The Truth, take two different movies and extract the dialogues scenes of actors form each, then re-edit them to create a story as if the characters from different movies were in the same conversation.

Listen to examples from the show including The Terminator and Legally Blonde (“Terminally Blonde”) and from the TV shows that become “The Sopranos in the West Wing.”

Mashing Twilight all together now!

So for this assignment we had to find a sequence of movies and mash scenes from each movie to make into one trailer. It was easy for me to figure out which movies I wanted to do…..Twilight! Because like I have mentioned before I do love Twilight, yes I realize it is very corny. Anyways, I went on Youtube to find different scenes from each of the films. Once I did so I uploaded each Youtube clip onto MPEG Streamclip where I edited them down to size. Once that was accomplished I uploaded each edited clip onto Windows Movie Maker and edited it down to size a little more so that the movie would flow better. I then added a credits slide and uploaded it to Youtube and I was done!

Mashing Up Movies Underwater

Sadly, I don’t really watch too many movies, but the few movies I watch are mainly animated. Why? I am a big kid at heart and animated movies has a way of keeping me young. Well, that is my story and I’m sticking to it. The assignment that allowed me to mash up movies, was one that I over-looked first. Then as I was going through the other assignments I got an idea of how to do this assignment.

My favorite movie of all time is TAKEN. Which is about a CIA agents who’s daughter gets kidnapped and he has to look for her. My favorite childhood movies were FINDING NEMO, which is about a fish that is separated from his father, and he father has to find him;  and DUDE, WHERE’S MY CAR, which is about a boy that basically looks for his car the whole movie. My favorite animated movie on from Disney is CARS. Which is about a race car that gets lost and finds himself in a deserted town. The car’s name is Lightning McQueen and all he wants is to get back to the big race.

What I did was take the 4 movies and put them into one poster. Which is below..

I created a whole new movie, called “Taken 2: Finding Lightning McQueen” [Taken 2] is from the movie TAKEN, [Finding] is from FINDING NEMO, and [Lightning McQueen] is from CARS. The poster includes a picture of [Dory] from the movie FINDING NEMO and a quote. The quote [Dude, Where's my Car] is from the movie DUDE WHERE’S MY CAR. In all the 4 movies are combined into a poster for a new movie

THE PROCESS

1. downloaded the photo of Dory from Google

2. saved it to my computer

3. opened the program Photovisi

4. Imported the photo of Dory as my background

5. Clicked “ADD TEXT” in Photovisi

6. Added the quotes and dragged them to where I wanted them.

7. Saved the project

8. Downloaded it to my computer

9. uploaded it to my blog

This project did not take long to do. It was very fun, but had to be done decent. I hope you enjoyed it. For more [Mashup that Movie]

Seven Day Daily Create Challenge (and mashup thereof)

In the spirit of pumping up activity for the Daily Create I issued a challenge to see who was strong enough to do one every day for a week. That is the first part of the challenge, and to do this assignment, you should do the same.

Then, and here is where it gets interesting, my friends, is that you are to make a mashup of content that other people created for each fo the seven days, and to make an interesting story out of it. How you do it is up to you, but you should use the media (and link back, give ’em credit) to 7 different pieces of media submitted for the Daily Create on the days you did yours.

Postcards–A Legoland/Minecraft Mashup

So, after nearly three weeks away for a conference (and panel comment), a new talk for a Civil War Round Table, and a family trip to California, I’ve finally returned to DS106 work.  These means that I’m woefully behind as the rest of the class has moved into audio assignments.  I’ll catch up as I can, first by doing some of the Design Assignments from Week 4.  This one is for Postcards from Magical Places.

The assignment reads (corrected for typos because I can’t help myself):

Design the front and back of a postcard that might be sent from the location of a movie or a work of fiction. Both sides of the cards must be created as graphics.

The front should use graphic design elements that provide a sense of place or use the classic motifs of old postcards (“Greetings from ______”), both pictures and text. The back of the post card should contain a stamp and postmark that fits with the theme of the movie, as well as an addressee and a message that fits the plot as well.

The modification that we had from Alan and Martha was that the image was supposed to come from the DS106 Minecraft server where there is some absolutely amazing stuff created by DS106 participants.  Unfortunately, the server was down when I went to it, so I ended up taking an image from a regular Minecraft instance.  But that was pretty boring, so I added an image I took on a recent trip to Legoland California.  [I took the Minecraft image as the background, and then, using the Quick Selection tool in Photoshop, removed the material in the upper right of the Lego version of Mount Rushmore, allowing the Minecraft background to show. This is all after some resizing of the two images so they matched.]

I then added some text, using a phrase that should be reminiscent on one commonly seen these days to those of us in Fredericksburg, and is an approved font from that institution.  The result was this:

Minecraft postcard--Side 1

For the second side, I created the stamp from the image of Lego Jefferson.* The expensive postcard price is an homage to the founding of UMW (as well as a tease to a relative who always scolds us when we spend more that the needed price on postcard postage).  The postmark is a stylized font in Photoshop and refers to the location of Legoland, as well as UMW.

Minecraft Postcard--Side 2

There are a few other nods, if not homages, in the letter and address.

* I think the thing next to his eye is supposed to be a Q-tip cleaning Washington’s ear, but given the past month at Mr. Jefferson’s University, I’m interpreting it as something wiping away TJ’s tears.
