For this assignment, we were to mash up a children’s book cover with another cultural artifact. I chose to use “Curious George” since I remember reading them when I was a kid, and the internet in general. Just like George, all of us are curious to find new information. The internet allows us to do that. I think this image I made represents that concept well.
Make sure to leave a comment of what you think and a link if you did one as well. I’d love to see them.
Take two different types of media which share a similar plot line and mash them up to better express the story. For example, use the audio from a book on tape and the film form a movie adaptation of the same story or maybe cut between two TV shows with episode that share a similar story line. It’s up to you, just explain your thinking!
For this assignment I wanted to compare the plot similarities between two different types of media. For example, when you are involved in a rediculous situation and think you might be in a real life version of Seinfeld. Or when you watch a TV show and it seems to follow a similar story to movie you once saw. Maybe you read a book that was later adapted to a movie. I think comparing these similar story lines is kinda neat.
So thats what I’m doing in this assignment. I chose to compare the similarities between “The Lion King” and “Hamlet.”
My favorite Disney movie has always been “The Lion King” because I love its vibrant colors, soundtrack, and story line. In high school I read “Hamlet” and hated it. I did’t understand thier weirdo talk and I was always getting the names of the characters all confused. There were very few time that I understood what was happening. It was a meserible experience. However, if my teacher had pointed out to me that there were some pretty direct parallels between its plot and the plot of “The Lion King,” I probably would have picked up the story much quicker (and a whole lot less painfully for all involved, might I add).
To bring in the mash up element to this assignment, I used the film trailer to “The Lion King,” a ten minute abbreviated plot summary, and a song about Hamlet, and manipulated them to create something new. I think it would also be neat to do the opposite of this and find a video clip from the movie “Hamlet” and a song from “The Lion King.” Or maybe go back and forth between a movie and audio clips form both. There are so many possible variations on this, all of which would be interesting concepts. Anywho, getting back to my assignment…
I found this really really great song on YouTube entitled “To Be or Not To Be: Hamlet Rap” by Tim Chang. As explained in the clip’s description, this was an assignment for an AP English Literature class. In the post, he even wrote out all of the lyrics. I love it because it’s really creative and tells the entire story of Hamlet. I wish I knew of something like this when I myself was in high school trying to make sense of “Hamlet.”
I think its helpful to use these non-traditional ways of explaining the plot of Hamlet (“The Lion King” trailer, abbreviated plot, and the “Hamlet” Rap) because they allow someone who is slightly familiar with the two stories, perhaps one more than the other, to relate the two and gain a greater understanding of both.
Blah blah blah, that was a lot of talking to get to this point. Sorry. Here is what I came up with.
“The Lion King” Meets “Hamlet” Mash Up from Emily DelRoss on Vimeo.
It took quite a long time to complete this. Originally I aimed to match up the lyrics of the Hamlet song with the parallel points in the Lion King videos. However, this proved WAY difficult becuase of the fast tempo of the song. Also, the song rearranges the plot line and repeats some scenes (which makes total sense in the song format, but is difficult to pull off in video). So I ended up doing my best to cut down the videos and include only the clips which are referenced at some point in the song. I know I could have worked on this for HOURS more to get it just right, but I finally decided that what I had suited the purpose of the assignment. (So feel free to remix mine and make it better!)
Earlier this week I made the huge mistake of doing mashup assignments instead of remix assignments.. It was embarrassing. Here is another assignment from the mashups that I finished, but had just not posted. The assignment - Take clips from different songs and mash them up into something fun. Try to use random effects and cross music genres.
I made two of these. The first one was a mess, so I tried again but approached it differently. I give artists like Girl Talk credit for their work, because finding combinations of music that sounds good is not easy, for me at least. I basically chose songs that I really enjoy, and I went from there.
Here’s my first try:
The songs:
For my second try I wanted to tell a story, so I chose my music accordingly. I was kind of inspired by the movie, Greece, but what might more realistically happen. Girl likes boy, boy not interested, girl tries hard to get boy, boy likes girl, they don’t get along, they fight, they break up.
Songs:
When I look back and compare the two projects in garageband, it’s crazy how much more organized my second project was than my first. There is so much overlap, and adjusting the volume of individual tracks when I could have kept it more elegant by placing the tracks in the order in which they would come in the song, and then trim the rest of the song, instead of just muting it. Here’s what I’m talking about:
It was so much easier working with the second mashup. Assignment worth 3 stars.
This is my video mask up of beauty queens. This has been one of my favorite assignments.I took 5 clips from movies that showed beauty queens or girl who act like beauty queens from past movies and combined it into a video clip thatwas fun and exciting to watch it gave you special sceens from the diva in the movies
Process: Find a picture of Pikacu and Phoo. Conbine them and color them.
Story: They are extremely influential in both Japan and the US espicially in 90′s… They are both yellow… sort of animals which have a owner… Kawai hun? childhood remake!!
Hey guys!! Here’s my second ds106 for this section
So, since I have already done an assignment from every section but the audio, video and mashup sections, I decided to do something from the Mashup Assignments The directions for this assignment was:
Take any 2 (or more) creations from any category of assignment that another student has posted and mash them up into something new an original. Hopefully most of what we’re creating here is CC-licensed for remixing but check first before spending hours on your masterpiece.
The Process:
First, I went around people’s wordpress accounts to look for images to work with. However, it was very hard looking for images that match. Therefore, I ended up at my friends’ (Clio and Keiko‘s) wordpress page to look for a similar image (because they have similar tastes).
Then I went to Picnik to edit my image. First, I thought of pasting the two kids into the sky picture. However, I thought it would be kind of awkward for them to be floating in the sky. Therefore, I just went with the picture of the sky plus the quote.
Well, here it is
Movie Trailer Mashup is a video assignment that involves incorporating clips from a different movie into the trailer of another movie to change the meaning or tone of the original. After some long thought I decided to do a sports themed movie. I always enjoyed watching to football film The Replacements and decided to look up the movie trailer. When I was watching it I began to think of how I could replace some of the football scenes in the trailer with something funnier. Then I remembered another football movie I used to watch as a kid, The Little Giants. So sure enough, I cut scenes from the movie about pee-wee football, and inserted them into a trailer about professional football. It actually ended up working out nicely because their uniforms are actually similar. So it kind of looks like scenes from The Replacements, just on a smaller scale:

To make this movie I used Windows Movie Maker 2.6. This is quickly becoming my favorite movie editor, as it makes cutting film clips extremely easy. The hardest part about this assignment was how to incorporate the action from The Little Giants to reflect the narrative of the movie trailer.
