Storytelling Through Text Messages

For the next part of our mashup assignments I chose to tell a story through text messages. Now this took a lot more planning than I would have thought. I most certainly got caught up in the process because it ended up being a 12 minute video.

First I borrowed my sisters phone and I created 2 Animoji’s that I felt embodies the 80’s style girls had. I got rid of some of my sister & my messages by sending an empty message. Once I realized where the story was going I had to borrow my mom’s phone as well. I was screen recording on my phone so I changed some of the contact names and profile pictures in my most recent messages since they were going to be seen briefly when I switched messages. I decided which storyline I wanted to create and how I planned on creating it and began.

Last, I started screen recording and sat with my mom and sister’s phones to create the story! I got very caught up and interested in my story I did not expect it to be as long as it became.

Sadcat Superimposition

When you finish a really good video game and you don’t know what to do with yourself

This is a 4.5 star mashup assignment where you have to superimpose images over another one. Personally, I can’t take superimposed photos seriously. They all look like memes. So I made a meme.

I took the final screen you see in one of my favorite video games, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild first. It’s meant to symbolize the general feeling of completing a game, and this was the first one to come to mind. There’s a general feeling of emptiness and satisfaction when you beat a really long video game, so I made this silly picture to go with it. I put the photo in an online photo editor first.

Then, I added layers with more images. I picked photos of edited “sad cats” which are just cats with sad watery eyes on them and lowered the opacity to superimpose them on top of the landscape.

My mini story is the meme caption I wrote above! It sums up what it’s like to finish a game in an image.

Logo Switch Up

This is a two star mashup assignment! My task was to edit a brand onto a different product (that would not be related) I thought it would be a funny idea to take a company and product that had nothing to do with each other.

I hunted for red logos that looked similar. I decided I wanted to use Nintendo for one of them, so I mostly searched for similar fonts or appearances that kind of matched their logo.

Nintendo Toothpaste

I found that the Colgate logo has a similar red and white look to it! I selected this because no one would ever associate these companies with each other unless there was some sort of kid’s promotion.

I used a photo editor to stack a Colgate toothpaste tube and the Nintendo logo, and then I put the logo over the original. There was some parts sticking out, so I colored over it with the same red color.

Please don’t use a Nintendo product to brush your teeth!

Tina Krueger

This mashup assignment was to take “Talking Tina’s” head and to put it on something else. I was not and am still not entirely sure what Talking Tina is, but I went ahead and put her on Freddie Krueger to keep with the 80’s theme! I used Photoshop for this assignment, and it was pretty simple!

Remixing Photo Collage

This week along with completing some mashup assignments we were assigned to created 2 remixes as well. The first type of assignment I found was a visual assignment for a photo collage. The collage was supposed to be all about things that bring you peace. However, when remixed, the assignment asks you to create the assignment as if a drill sergeant at boot camp was was instructing you.

Results from the remix generator

I decided to take advantage of this opportunity and create a collage of photos from my time in San Antonio this year when, my boyfriend completed his boot camp. We experienced a lot of different things on base that I am happy to be able to share here.

Animoji Karaoke

For this mashup, I lip synced Jessie’s Girl using apples new Animoji app! The animoji looks very similar to me with the dark hair, brown eyes, and the hair! I also typically wear a black beanie. I choose this song because it was released in 1981 and is an 80’s hit!

Ferris Bueller’s Day at The Breakfast Club

For this mashup assignment, I had to mashup a photo of two actors into one. To keep this assignment on theme with the class, I choose to mash up The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Here is my creation!

I took the two images from Google, and used Photoshop to mash them together! The photo of The Breakfast Club had a white background, so that was easy to erase, then clip the characters from. After I created a new layer, I copied that into the photo from Ferris Bueller’s day off and flattened the image.

Animoji Karaoke.

This is the original assignment worth 5 stars. With my iPhone XS, I created myself using Apple’s Animoji. I decided to listen and lip sing the song, “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey from the 80s. I saved the video and uploaded it onto YouTube and my google drive. I answered the questions, ” Why do you think your character looks like you?” “Why did you chose this song?” This mashup includes elements from video, audio, and written work that I created all on my iPhone.

I created my own personal emoji with blonde hair and blue eyes. I chose to have a smile when speaking because I believe that is what I act like when interacting with people. My boyfriend though that my emoji looked just like me so I think I did pretty good with the editing and design of my emoji. He talked for me because he found it funny that it was my face with his voice. I had to look up how to create my own emoji and the directions helped me out a lot. This assignment was interesting and challenging because I had a hard time at first on how to upload the video to my email, google drive, and YouTube. Overall, I know have my own personal “mini-me.” I have found myself using it more during texting my friends.

SWITCHING UP LOGOS (and channels)

? Four, three, two, one
Earth below us
Drifting, falling
Floating, weightless
Switching up, switching up home ?

Peter “Melody” Schilling

I switched things up a bit for my last mashup and did Logo Switch Up! Details for this assignment are as follows:

“Use one brand’s advertisement for another brand by replacing the logo of one brand with the logo of another. Be creative and try to pick similar logos that could look correct in the advertisement if we did not already have the brand awareness!”

I chose this assignment because I thought it would be interesting to see if I could mash an 80’s logo with a modern one. The well-known 80’s MTV logo came to mind, so I started looking at other TV channel logos to find one to match. The 80’s MTV logo was very bright and bold with their colors, so I narrowed my focus on logos that were playful and would look good if swapped with MTV. The Bravo logo with the bright blue letters caught my eye, so I brought that in to Photoshop along with an image that is associated with MTV- the astronaut with an MTV flag.

First, I painted over the ‘M’ in MTV with the same color purple that was on the flag. I cut out the ‘TV’ and pasted it on a separate layer. I placed my Bravo logo underneath the ‘TV,’ rotated the logo, and got the placement just right. I then re-colored the ‘TV’ with a brighter shade of the teal color it had, since my image was pixel-y. I also touched up the image in areas where it was especially pixelated by using the stamp tool. I then added noise and a little bit of blur to my logos so that they weren’t so out-of-place.

I also wanted to add a mashup of slogans to my image, so I brought in an image of an MTV poster that had these label-maker looking tags. I erased everything except for the rectangular shapes and searched online for a label-maker font. I found ‘Impact Label Reversed’ and made some text layers. I rotated my text and played with spacing to get the desired label-maker look.

The final result of MTV mashed with Bravo:

Both Bravo and MTV have colorful logos, so the swap looks pretty natural to me. I even think that the slogan works because it’s simple enough that it doesn’t feel out-of-character (Bravo’s slogan is ‘Watch What Happens’). Maybe there should be a ‘Bravo TV’ as a subset of Bravo. They’re a quirky channel and I could see them playing some MTV videos!

I GUESS THAT’S WHY THEY CALL IT (the contest nobody could win)

? And I guess that’s why they call it the contest nobody could win
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the contest nobody could win ?

Elton “Melody” John

It’s time to play, ‘Guess That Movie!’ I chose to do the assignment The Contest Nobody Could Win (Video-Mashup Edition) for my next mashup because it sounded like a lot of fun! Details for this assignment are as follows:

“Create a mashup of 6 video clips (either TV or Movie) no longer than 2 seconds each. See if anyone can guess your favorite films!”

I chose 6 different 80’s movies for this assignment after perusing an extensive list. These aren’t necessarily my favorite movies, but they are ones I’ve at least seen or seen parts of, and are ones that I like. I tried to pick out titles that are neither super popular (i.e., Back to the Future), nor super obscure, because I wanted it to be challenging but not impossible. I came up with a list of about 10 movie options, then narrowed it down to 6 based on some running themes of transportation.

Next, I downloaded a clip from each movie and scrubbed through them in After Effects for the scene I wanted. Each scene could only be 2 seconds long, so I had to choose carefully. I selectively cut out 2 seconds from each clip based on my theme, and stitched those clips together. Finally, I added end credits and an answers frame at the end for anyone who failed to Guess That Movie!

But wait, something is missing….ah! An intro would be nice here! I decided to add an intro to my game, and I did this by adding some white shapes to the beginning of my video so that I had a background image that looked like film strip. Next, I added the text “Guess That Movie” (each word on a separate layer) and then “80’s,” and thought up ways to animate my text. I decided that I would have “80’s” come in from the right and bump “That,” forcing “That” to scoot over to the left to make room for the new word.

To achieve my desired effect, I placed a mask over “80’s” and set up keyframes to move both the mask and the 80’s text layer. I also added a black rectangle shape to move with those layers so that “80’s” didn’t just appear out of nowhere. Once “80’s” was in place, I made the rectangle disappear by changing the scale and opacity keyframes. It was a little tricky to get “80’s” to move, stop, and then keep moving. This movement will look jerky unless you go to keyframe interpolation in the nav menu. I used ‘hold’ and ‘linear’ for my keyframes to get a smooth movement.

I then added a text animation to “Guess,” “That” and “Movie,” called text wiggle, and adjusted the settings to get the movement that I wanted. Finally, I added an upbeat 80’s tune from Freesound.org. The music was a little longer than my animation, so I cut out some of the middle and placed the beginning and end together rather than stretching out my animation (I didn’t want a longer intro). You can tell where the cut is, but it’s hopefully not too noticeable.

Without further ado, I bet you can’t Guess That Movie:
