How To: Movie Mashup

This is a tutorial for how to do the “Movie Mashup” assignment. The assignment instructs you to “Take a movie that you really like.  Now think of a movie that has been compared to it, and make a new movie poster that incorporates the two!” I will go through my process step by step and show you how I completed this assignment.

First things first, decide on two movies that are similar and you want to mashup. For my assignment, I chose two secret agent movies, which goes with the class theme. I looked up posters from both movies and decided how I was going to edit them. I found a poster from the Bourne Identity that I decided to use.

I studied how the poster was designed, and then found an image similar to the one on the poster.

I decided to use Canva to edit the image. Canva is an extremely useful tool that I would recommend for any kind of design project. I opened Canva and clicked on “Card” in the “Create a Design” section, since the card shape is what I wanted for my design.

I clicked on uploads, which is on the left side of the screen. Then I uploaded the picture to Canva and began my editing process.

As you can see in the poster picture, there is both text and white lines on the original. I searched for “white line” in elements, which gave me the thick white line below.

I shrunk two lines down to the size that I wanted and lined them up with the + in the photo.

Then I started working on the text. As you can see on the original poster that says “THE BOURNE IDENTITY,” some of the words are bolded and larger than others. For my mashup poster, I wrote “MISSION” in big bold letters.

I followed that by writing “IMPOSSIBLE” with unbolded letters. I also lined the O up with the +, similar to the original.

After I was done editing, I saved the photo to my computer.

And that’s all! I posted the assignment normally, making sure to use the right tags. You can find my assignment here.

How to . . . Actor Mashup!

The assignment, Actor Development, is really fun to do. It took a lot more work than I expected. If you don’t know where to begin on this assignment, look no further! This tutorial will give you tips and instructions on how to do this Mashup Assignment.

The instructions for this assignment are:

Create a 2-3 mins clip on an actors development chose your favorite scenes from these films from there early film credits to now and show their development mash them up and then give a brief description on why you chose the actor and how they have developed as an actor.

First things first, you have to choose an actor/actress. When I completed this assignment, I chose the actor Johnny Depp. Choose an actor/actress that is one of your favorites or has appeared in a variety of movies. Some ideas for actors/actresses could be: Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Dwayne Johnson, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Harrison Ford, Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock, etc. You can choose anyone you want.

After you choose an actor/actress, choose some of your favorite movies they have starred in. If you are not familiar with their films, go to Google and just type “famous movies” before or after the actor/actress’ name. For example, for Johnny Depp, you can see the results from the Google search.

Searching for movies with Johnny Depp

After you have chosen some movies that your actor/actress has starred in, it’s time to find them on YouTube! Simply type in the movie title into YouTube and hit search. You can also type the name of the actor/actress after the title if you want. Here is an example using Johnny Depp and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory:

Finding movie scenes on YouTube

Go through the results that come up and find a scene that you like. If you cannot find any videos, try some different keywords. Like if you only typed in the movie title, try to include the name of the actor/actress. If you did include their name, take it out and see what results you get. It is easier to use more popular movies when searching for scenes on YouTube. If you continue to struggle trying to find a scene, you can choose a different movie, especially if the actor/actress you chose has many films. REMEMBER: It’s not too late to change the actor/actress you chose. If you’re having a hard time finding movie scenes, just choose a different actor/actress.

After you have chosen a video, open a new tab, and find a website that will download the video for you. Be careful with this step. Some websites are not safe. I used y2mate downloader for all of my videos. In order to use this downloader, you simply copy the URL for the YouTube video of your choosing, paste it into the search bar in y2mate, and choose an option for your download.

Downloading scenes from YouTube

** Do not hit the start button that appears next to the search bar on the website. It opens a new tab that is not part of the downloader. Choose the quality you desire for your video. The higher the resolution is, the more clear the video will be. Be careful when you are choosing resolutions for all of your videos. Try to choose the same, or similar, resolutions for all of your videos so the final video looks unified.

It is helpful to create a folder that holds all of the video files in one place. It is important that none of the videos get lost in your Downloads folder, so a folder labeled with “Actor Development” or the name of your actor/actress would be a good idea. I did this when I was completed this assignment, and I found it very helpful.

The next step is to put all of the scenes together. If you are working on a PC, you can use Windows Movie Maker. If you are working on a Mac, you can use iMovie. I used iMovie to make my video, so the tutorial is with iMovie, however Windows Movie Maker worked similarly to iMovie the last time I used it.

The first thing you have to do is import the videos from your folder to the video editing program.

New project in iMovie

Start with a new project, and click the import media button with the arrow above it, shown in the picture above. Once you click that button, a screen will come up asking you where you will get the media from. Find your folder with the videos and select them all using Command+A or Ctrl+A if you are on a PC. Then, click the “Import Selected” button.

Selecting all of the videos to import from Actor Development folder

Once all of the videos are imported, they will appear on the left side of the screen, as shown below. To add the clips to your video, simply drag and drop them into the bottom section.

At this point, you can either trim the videos as you go, or you could drag them all in and trim them later. If you want a scene that is in the middle of a clip, you can split the clip, as shown below, and precisely get the clip you need.

Click with two fingers (or right click) to get to this menu, and click “Split Clip” for where you want the clip to start
Split the clip again where you want the clip to end
Pull up the same menu again and delete the clips you do not want

Continue to edit the clips as you please. The best idea might be to keep the order of the videos in chronological order by age, but you can edit the videos however you like. After you have all of the videos edited, you can stop there. If you wanted to, you can add a title in the beginning and the titles of the movies as the clips appear, along with an ending note.

All of the titles of the movies and the beginning and end are added in the same way. First, you go to the Titles section in iMovie.

Titles section

The titles will appear where your imported videos have been. Look at the titles and find one that you like. To put the title into the video, simply drag and drop it just like with the imported videos. To edit the text, click on the text box on the right (with the red box around it in the picture) and get to typing.

Inserting a title and adding text

Then your video is complete! I hope this tutorial was helpful and you had fun! If you have any questions, ask!

Mashup Mania

This assignment was fairly simple to do and it required us to mash together logos. I tried to make something that would make sense and I figured anytime I went shopping I would get hungry so why not combine two of my favorite things. McDonalds and H and M. I really liked how H+M was used together and decided to put the McDonalds logo next to the H so it keeps the same original form. Take a look!

A ‘Wicked’ Mashup

One thing that most people don’t know about me is that I am absolutely OBSESSED with Broadway and musicals in general.

To date, I have seen about 15 Broadway shows and definitely have performed concerts in the shower singing along to some of my favorite songs from musicals.

So, when I saw that one of this week’s 3-star mashup assignments consisted of remixing one of your favorite songs from a Broadway musical to show the different covers that have been created over the years, I knew not only that I wanted to complete this assignment but what song and musical I wanted to use for it…

Since 1997, Wicked has been one of the most ‘popular’ and successful Broadway shows to date. While the stroyline of Wicked is Wickedly entertaining, probably the main reason that Wicked is so popular is it’s music, and arguably the best song that came from Wicked is “Defying Gravity.”

“Defying Gravity” is a wildly popular song, even if you aren’t familiar with Broadway and the musical Wicked. It’s difficult melody has been covered by hundreds of thousands of people attempting to be Elphaba.

So for this week’s assignment, I decided to create a remix of “Defying Gravity” used clips from multiple covers of this popular song!

The firt step to making my mashup was to download all the clips to mp4 files. I decided to do mp4 files instead of mp3 files because I wanted to include videos with the audio since the performance is a big aspect of a broadway show! Once I found the various clips I wanted to use and downloded them, I uploded the clips to my HP photo and video ediotr where I was able to trim the videos so they would connect and flow into one another. I have gotten very comfortable using my HP editor app which made this assignment pretty simple to do!

Here is my video!

I had a lot of fun creating this video and this remix! I made a Disney Mashup early in the semester and remember being super stressed out making that and having a lot of difficulty. It was great to get the chance to make anotehr sort of mashup! Making this mashup was a lot easier than the first time around, which I think reflects how much I have learned over the course of the semester! I also got to use actual video versus just audio as I did in my Disney Mashup so it was cool to get the chance to sort of complete a similiar assignemnt but update my learning skills!

Remix #1: Music mash & the color pink

Here’s my remixed song about pink stuff.

Soundcloud repetitively blocked my remix, so I’m attempting to embed it here. If it doesn’t work here, leave me a message with your email and I can send it that way!

I had fun with this remix assignment, the page that gave me the information was as shown below:

I used a youtube video to MP3 website to get the two original files, then I decided which one I liked more, and how I could blend them. I used a DJ turn table sound in the second song to mask the transition, and make it flow more effectively. I did all of the edits that I mentioned in Audacity, as always. Honestly, I think it turned out to be a pretty dang catchy song! I’m pretty happy with it. I think the transition from song A to song B couldn’t have gone much more smoothly- given the differences between the song genres that I started with.

Hey everyone, I have no idea if this is embedded properly, but I tried my best to format it to be less ugly. I made a police chase story using the images/sounds. I thought it would fit well into the spy theme! If you want to make one, this is the link! (2 stars)

King’s Sky mashup

Hey there everyone, today I’m tacking a few more stars, 4.5 more- to be exact. I took on the movie trailer mashup assignment with some ideas already in my head. I initially wanted to mix Skyfall with a Mr. Bean type of character to cut the serious spyishness with a buffoon, but the difference in the clips that I sourced was just too extreme. Instead, I used another silly villain. I remembered that one of my favorite parts of the Kingsman movie was that the villain was kind of the comic relief of the film, which was something that I had never seen before in the spy theme.

That being said, I mixed the two movies by making the typical badass Bond montage, but also mixed in the funny bits of Richmond Valentine- the villain from Kingsman. To make the movie, I simply screen recorded both trailers on my phone, and then clipped out the parts that I want/ didn’t want to use. After I had a good chunk of clips, I threw them all into iMovie on my cell phone and blended them together. I carefully selected transitions that best fit the scene/dialogue- so if you pay close attention you’ll be able to see the differences in some of my scene transitions.

Let me know down below what you think! Did the villain make you laugh at all? If you hated it, be sure to let me know that too!

Logo mashup

2 Stars

For this assignment, I had to combine two logos into one logo. I chose Target and Urban Outfitters. I used the main red target for Target and then the basic print name for Urban Outfitters.

It was really easy to create this graphic. I simply downloaded the two companies’ logos to my computer and then used the graphic design website, Canva, to mashup the two logos.

Holiday Mashup

4.5 Stars

For this assignment, I had to make a mashup of images from my three favorite holidays. I decided to use a Christmas tree for Christmas, champagne glasses for New Years, and a turkey for Thanksgiving.

This assignment was really easy to create. I used Canva again to edit all the images together and then downloaded the image onto my computer.

Sound Track Mashup

4 Stars

For this assignment, I was instructed to take two songs and do a mashup of them. Then I was supposed to compare the differences among the songs such as instruments, changes in volume, etc.

Instead of only doing two songs, I decided to pick four. These four are important because I picked one song from each of my group members selected movie for our Radio Show project. For my movie Atomic Blonde I chose David Bowie’s Cat People (Putting out the Fire). Lauren chose the Nancy Drew movie so I used Come to California by Matthew Sweet. Hannah chose Salt, Evelyn Salt so I picked the Escaping the CIA song from James Newton Howard’s soundtrack. Finally, Tiffany chose Mr. and Mrs. Smith so I picked the song Mondo Bongo by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros.

One thing I noticed with the songs from these different movie soundtracks were the mood of the songs. The songs I chose from Nancy Drew and Mr. and Mrs. Smith are both upbeat songs that are catchy. These movies are also funnier spy movies, unlike the other two I chose. The songs from Atomic Blonde and Salt are more instrumental or slow-moving songs. These movies are more serious spy movies.

This assignment showed me the importance of a soundtrack in displaying the theme of a movie or tv show. These four movies all chose songs representative of their theme and it adds a lot to the experience of watching them.
