The Evolution of Hannibal Lecter

For my second assignment this week I chose to do this one for 4.5 stars. The goal of this assignment is to create a video featuring the evolution of a particular character through multiples films/appearances as so often we see so many remakes and films featuring the same character presented in a different way.

This was certainly a challenging assignment! I thought it was interesting when I saw it since I like video editing, and I tried to think of a character that’s represented in multiple movies, and I thought of Hannibal Lecter, a character that was first created through novels and adapted in many movies and a TV series. To find out how many there were and the titles/dates for each movie because I didn’t remember them all I checked out this Wikipedia page and discovered there were even more movies than I thought there were (I hadn’t ever seen Manhunter before). The movies/shows shown in the video are from the following:

Manhunter (1986)

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Hannibal (2001)

Red Dragon (2002)

Hannibal Rising (2006)

Hannibal (2013-2015)

After this, I searched YouTube for some clips to use with the 4K video downloader, finding a few I liked. Then I used Adobe Premiere Elements 15 to edit together the video that you see adobe, adding the appropriate titles and credits that listed each movie/show used and the song I used in the video. The most difficult task here was editing the clips together and choosing which ones I wanted to include. I noticed that there were so many scenes of some character, either Clarice Starling or Will Graham, visiting Hannibal in his cell for the first time, as he is often a character introduced from someone else’s perspective, so I decided to mash those together in the beginning, then in the second half of the video I chose scenes that featured Hannibal himself more prominently. I also chose the song, which is Bach’sĀ Aria of the Goldberg Variations, because it is a song featured in both NBC’s Hannibal TV series and in Silence of the Lambs, as it’s supposed to be a song Hannibal enjoys. I hope you enjoy the video!

Week 12

I enjoyed this week! Even though I had 3 papers and 1 exam I was able to complete the assignments. I think video is just extremely hard to complete because it takes so many factors, and all the mashup stars I chose this week were visual design/photo tasks.Ā I receive more entertainment from creating designs and pictures because theres more structure, video is more free and I find it more work. I even got commenting in this week!!

Incorporating my character into an image, I used her form as a leopard, I wanted to show her being able to walk around without being noticed in the dark. The background was an image of the dinning hall on UMW’s campus that I took at night.

For her closeup I used a free photo of a worried woman in a hat in the sun, and used my own photo from Kenya to make the background. It was supposed to be Aitana right after she left the statue and was running away and trying to understand why she felt different than before.

For the two other assignments I did design projects, one was mashing up two different logos to make them look as one. I did Pepsi and Coke combined into one soda logo!

The last assignment involved contrasting an emoji and human. I chose my step-mom who welded and used that picture of here from her fb profile and the dark-haired, girl, welder emoji. I was so into this assignment that I also made my tutorial on it!

For the remixes I also chose one photo editing and poster design. I got to photoshop (but really just used Preview app) myself into a different “universe” and for that I made myself sit on the plane of a wing (both photos were mine). An then altered the color to look drastically unpleasant and unrealistic.

The other remix I did was of a lost and found poster. I remixed it to “the opposer” and instead made a flyer forĀ selling the hat/trying to get rid of it instead of find it.

The two daily creates I did were more opinion based than “creative” this week. First the account had simply stated “Sadie Hawkins Day” and I looked up the link they gave, it provided background to the dance I was aware of but never went to growing up. I stated:

The second T.D.C. was captioning a cartoon image, I found this was funny and came up with two captions just because I enjoyed it so much:

My group got the “special assignment” of creating a “This week in ds106” post. Ours was on all the video assignments people made. We weren’t able to get it done until Thursday because communication was such a struggle. But we did finally get to honor the hard work of our fellow classmates!

Overall it was a busy but good week ?

Human vs. Emoji

For this assignment I used an old picture of my stepmom! As teenager she worked as a welder with her dad, I thought this picture would be a perfect comparison to the new emoji of a welder since the emoji’s are trying to represent more people everyday (currently they have just woman and men with different hair color and skin tone):

A Leopard on Campus!

I had to combine two or more images for this. I needed to show how my character (the Shadow Leopard) would use her power in everyday life. I chose a photo of mine of the UC and an iconĀ of a leopard to have her walking around at night in the shadows. The fact that she is wondering campus should be worrying! Maybe Rama has visited us without our knowing!

I also happened to use the same icon that is in my character’s logo!

Can you spot her?

The Grinch in the Hat

For the assignment (3 stars), I decided to mashup two Dr. Seuss books. I started by thinking about what I children’s books would be fun to put together. I then found found a blue background to imitate the Cat in the Hat background. I then found the grinch and his dog and cut them out. I put the pictures together using the “Photoshop Mix” app on my iPad. I then added the hat and bow tie to the grinch. I could not figure out how to get the hat to fit properly on the grinch’s head which was frustrating. I then found a font that was similar to the type on the Cat in the Hat book. I played with the size and arrangement. I then saved the picture and uploaded it. When I put it on the blog, it became a little blurry which is annoying. I really liked this idea for the assignment and the end result.

Until next time,

Emily

Can you Guess my Favorite TV Shows?

For my first assignment this week I’ve done this one for 4 stars. The assignment is as follows:

Create a mashup of 6 video clips (either TV or Movie) no longer than 2 seconds each. See if anyone can guess your favorite films!

Please watch the above video to see the clips and guess what TV shows they are in the comments below! You can pause the video before the answers are given at the end, to see if you were right!

I absolutely love the assignments like this which involve commenters guessing the story you’re trying to tell, as it gives the assignments more of an interactive nature. The story of this video however is simple, as it contains short clips (2 seconds each) from 6 of my favorite TV shows! The challenge here was picking out 6 favorites (I love a lot of TV) and then choosing only 6 seconds of them from available YouTube clips. I tried to chose scenes that were not necessarily iconic or well-known to make it more difficult and yet, if you like the show involved and you see the clip, you should be able to recognize it easily. Anyway, I supposed already one or two of the shows aren’t as well-known so I’m not sure if many people will be able to guess them all! Surely you all can at least guess a few of them?

To to this assignment, I used the 4K video downloader to download clips of the scenes I wanted, then I used Adobe Premiere Elements 15 to edit the clips down to the 2 seconds from each and create the mashup of all the clips. I added background music, which is Wrong by VYEN from YouTube’s copyright free music section. Additionally I added a title and some text at the end of the video that reveals the answers to what TV shows are shown.

Did you get any of them right in your guesses?

Have a Merry Spooky Valentineā€™s Day!

I had way too much fun with this one. I chose the Holiday Mashup assignment for 4.5 stars and LOVED it! Christmas is by far my favorite, followed by Halloween and then Valentine’s Day. I made Christmas the main theme and Halloween & Valentine’s Day smaller. Canva makes everything easier. I first found a snow background in canva, then found a santa image, pumpkin bucket image, and heart balloon image. I made sure none of them had backgrounds that would be hard to edit out. Here is my finished product!!

Looking Back

For the Mash Thyself, Before Ye Trash Thyself Assignment (3.5 stars), I decided to create a video that included many of my Daily Creates and design pieces! I decided that I had to use Pitbull’s Greenlight for the background because I have used the song for several of my other assignments. It was fun looking back on all the different images I have created!! I also realized how many pictures I used from abroad- I am so glad I went abroad, if for nothing else, it gave me great content to use for DS106!

To create the video, I used iMovie. I brought the clip from YouTube I had previously downloaded for another project into iMovie. Then, I started adding images to create the video.I dragged the various Daily Creates and design pieces from my desktop into iMovie. I decided that twenty seconds each would be a good time for each image, so I adjusted the time for each image. I made sure that each image looked okay and flowed well from one to another. Then, I added a title. Once I liked the way it looked and sounded, I downloaded it as a file and uploaded it to YouTube.

*Chewing bubble gum sounds*

Hay, I did this mashup assignment, number 1871. Pretty fun assignment except my Mac started updating in the middle which was super inconvenient because I had to restart. Anyway I just youtubed one liners, for inspiration. Following that I just watched the video and found two lines that jived to me. No real backstory behind it, just being creative. I used iMovie to cut the downloaded, converted mp4 of the youtube video. If I had to do it again I don’t think I would change anything because I think I hit the nail on the head. Check it out!
