Silly Repetitions

Let’s listen to some silly repetitions!

For the song mash up assignment, I decided to go a little different. The assignment was to find two songs and mash them up so it sounds like they are having a conversation. I still did that, but the two songs I chose are meant to mock each other. The first song is Paul MacCartneys Silly Love Songs – a classic love song that is just him singing “I Love You” over and over again. The second song I chose is Bo Burnham’s Repeat Stuff. Repeat Stuff is all about how love songs are this big scheme created by marketing executives that follow a simple pattern. You 1) repeat stuff (hence the title) and 2) you make it so general that any girl can think its her. Silly Love Songs is the prime example of that. So using Audacity, I picked specific parts of Bo’s song to make it sound like they are having a conversation but Bo is mocking him.

Do you agree with the people who mock songs? I sort of do, but I also love a good love song! What can I say!

This assignment was Music Mash worth 4 stars.

A Realistic Horror Story

I hope you didn’t have your volume turned up for that one!

For my first assignment this week I’ve created a story using only sound effects for 4 stars. You had to use only sound effects and no voices, with a minimum of 5 different sound effects.

Despite our theme of mythology, I created a more realistic horror story for this assignment. Having someone outside who comes into your house unauthorized is personally one of my greatest fears, which I’m sure is one shared by many people. I wanted to make the story more interesting than a mundane one, to have something dramatic and frightening happen, so, in this story, I embodied that common fear we all share.

I used 7 sounds to illustrate this story. It starts with a car driving up a gravel road, then a car door opening and slamming. Then, you hear slow footsteps across a paved surface as the intruder walks across the porch. Then, you hear the creaking of the door as they open it (why did you leave the door unlocked?). After hearing quiet footsteps on wood floor, the intruder catches you! Then, you hear two screams, that of a man and a woman. Ahhhhh!

I think that I did a pretty good job in choosing the sound effects for this story. For example, I think the slow footsteps outside help to set the mood, to make it creepier than fast footsteps might. Additionally, the car pulling up slowly for a long duration of time helps set the mood and keep the listener on edge, wondering what will happen when the car pulls up.

For this project, I used Audacity to mash together sounds I downloaded from freesound.org. This was my first time ever using Audacity, so it was quite difficult to get started, especially with cutting clips and getting them where I wanted in the timeline (which seems like a simple task, and yet I fought the program significantly for it). I didn’t experiment much with editing the sounds, except an option to even out the overall volume of the clip (which maybe worked?), but I look forward to exploring those in the future. I’m no expert in Audacity and audio editing for certain, but it feels good to have accomplished an audio clip that tells the story I had in mind!

Your Life IS a Movie!

For this assignment, you are to take videos of your own personal day, or take videos that are in your phone already and mash them with an audio of a movie trailer. Any movie trailer can be used, but the more creative and the more the movie matches the themes of the videos, the more fun it will be.

“A” Tone at 11 KHZ

This is simply an “A Tone” (no mashing of sounds – that’s just not as effective) manipulated to run at 11 kilohertz. If you listen to this for too long, I really believe you start to go insane. Such a simple noise that can be so horribly annoying.

Poor Unfortunate Souls Mother Knows Best: Apocalyptic Disney

The audio assignment, Disney Lyric Mashup (four stars), required us to create a story using the lyrics from various Disney songs. It wasn’t a requirement for the lyrics or story to make sense. This semester’s course revolves around the apocalypse and at first, I was challenged because when you think of Disney you feel cheerful. The first movie I chose was the Hunchback of Notre Dame, my favorite movie. I knew that the context of the movie was at times dark and gloomy and that the song Hellfire would be perfect.

The next song I chose was Poor Unfortunate Souls from the Little Mermaid. I use this song twice in my audio clip towards the middle and end. The first short clip of Poor Unfortunate Souls is followed by Tangled’s Mother Knows Best. Then as I said before the clip ends with Ursula singing.

To make the audio file I uploaded to SoundCloud I had to use two websites because audacity doesn’t work on my laptop. The first site I used was YTMP3 where I could upload the links to videos of the songs I had found on Youtube and convert them into audio files. Then I was able to adjust the files to the desired length on an audio trimmer. After clipped each audio file I used the audio joiner to organize and merge the newly formed mp3 files.

My Love For Videogames Knows No Boundaries

What do you love? (2 Stars)

Love is a strong word. When you use it, you are implying that you have an intense and deep feeling of affection towards something. My feelings for playing video games is that way. As a kid, I would play for hours upon hours of my favorite video games everyday. It got to the point where I was a bit addicted and I didn’t even notice it. For this assignment, my job was to compile clips of something I love, which is video games. Below is my compilation video of my favorite clips on YouTube from my favorite game ever, Grand Theft Auto V. (The name of the people who each clip belongs to appears on the top left corner)

GTA V is among the most detail oriented games ever created. The incredible attention to small details the developers put is unimaginable. It truly is one of the greatest games ever created, and has had me glued to it for years now.

The Process

The process for creating the video started the same as the other video assignments. I started off the process by creating a new project in clipchamp. Clipchamp is an online video editing program that allows someone to professionally edit videos for free.

  1. The first step I took after creating the project was to upload the different clips I wanted to mash together onto clipchamp.
  2. Second, I uploaded background audio I found on YouTube to play for most of the intense moments in the video. I then used the splitting tool to capture the footage I wanted and get rid of the excess footage that I didn’t want.
  3. Lastly, I exported my project as an MP4 file on to my computer.

Week Eleven – Coming Down the Home Stretch

Here I am wright my blog about week 11

Wait, Wasn’t that 3 weeks ago? What have you been doing?

Well a little thing called life has popped up and boy has it been crazy. I got put on back to back to back work travel during the weeks and weekends and my time management went right out the door. Well here I am today to catch up. I know im late to the party but Im here to do the work and learn from this class.

The first thing I want to recap is the short film that Anne and I did. Anne and I took our radio show that we created and created a feature film to show the aftermath. I was inspired to make this short film by the Holocaust and Humanities Class I took her at UMW. In this class, we studied interviews by survivors and I felt these were also the best way to understand what an individual did to survive.

I had to travel during the week to San Francisco so I was able to get some great live shots on the west coast. Anne and I took our characters to the next level and created an awesome video. Anne was such a great partner and I truly enjoyed working with her.

Here is our video The Second Chance:

Video Assignment : The Night of The Living Dead – Character/Genre Song Mashup

For this video assignment, I decided to twist it a little to give it a personal touch. What I did was take the final scene in the movie where Ben is mistakenly murdered by the posse and add in tragic, sad music. I feel like the music adds an additional level of tragedy to the ending. Here is the clip below.

Finally, to answer the question of the week… the first thing I would do after I heard the world was ending would be to call my family and try to figure out how we could all survive. If there are no options, then I guess thats the time to say goodbye.

Till Next Week,

Geoff

A Beautiful Gif-t

The final assignment I did for my novel was the Apocalyptic Book Cover: Gif Edition, for 5 stars. I had an incredibly hard time with this assignment and I’m still not completely satisfied with how it looks but sometimes you don’t get the perfect result. For the cover, I wanted to again show the literal “Sea of Rust” and the key concept of a large force pursuing individual bots. I wanted to have at least one robot moving across the sands of the Sea and something to portray CISSUS. You can view my animated book cover for Sea of Rust below.

An attempt was made.

When I first embarked on this assignment, I thought it would be a challenge to put together creatively but a simple technical process, like the gif we made for the apocalyptic movie we watched. However, I soon realized that without video source material, making a gif is a little more complicated. I knew I wanted to mash together a desert background and moving robots to create a scene that sums up a lot of the book. But I didn’t know exactly how to accomplish this. At first, I tried Photoshop. This was where I made my gif before. But whenever I tried to use a gif resource, it wouldn’t let me import it or I would get a frame done and it would copy the same frame for all the frames. I tried iMovie as well, after seeing Taylor’s post about using Final Cut Pro but I couldn’t quit apply the instructions she got to iMovie.

Finally, I turned to ezgif.com after realizing that you could put text, a gif, a background and an overlay together on their website. That was the bare minimum of things I needed to create the concept I was going for. I uploaded the images I got from Sporistics and Gifycat and got to work. It was still difficult for me to use this method, as everything seemed to be different sizes and I couldn’t get the text to appear in just one place. After a lot of fiddling and frustration, I created the gif above.

The most difficult part was trying to get the robot movement to smooth out and not jump. But with ezgif, I had to leave one frame “blank” for the desert picture to act as a background. It appears I have a lot left to learn about creating gifs and this was definitely a learning experience! I think the DKC will be getting a visit from me soon so I can learn how to make the smooth, complex gifs of my dreams.

A Story in Songs

The second media assignment I did for my novel was the Poetry Playlist assignment for 3 stars. I’m a sucker for all assignments involving playlists because I love music and creating playlists that evoke certain feelings or have more meaning than just a list of songs. I also love poetry so this was a no brainer for me! Below you can check out the poem I created for Sea of Rust.

I originally made my playlist in iTunes but I realized with the new layout, you wouldn’t be able to read the titles all in a row in a seamless fashion so I moved it to Spotify. First I went through my entire iTunes library and picked out songs that reminded me of different aspects of Sea of Rust. I started to get a solid concept in mind because I found phrases that really fit in well. I decided to focus on Two’s role as a sacrifice to be spare parts for Rebekah, as well as Brittle and other bots’ loss of sanity when they start to break down. My favorite parts of my poem are definitely the “green light” part, because I was happy to find something reminiscent of the “green flash” in the novel, and the fact that I was able to get some rhyming in the poem with fitting lines.

If I have time in the coming weeks, I’d love to remix this assignment with an audio one and make some kind of mash up with my poetry songs! Let me know if you recognize any of the songs or share your own playlist poem.

28 DS106-es Later

I did the impossible. I made 28 Days Later look like a happy, totally normal movie. At the same time, I also created a sick ad for DS106. I’m insanely proud of what I did with this assignment so I hope you guys check it out! You might see yourself in it(most likely) and you’ll definitely relate.

To create this ad for the Mash a Movie assignment, I used 4K Video Downloader to download some clips of scenes I wanted from YouTube. I really recommend this for people who don’t want to or can’t download the entire film and chop it down! When I first started, I realized that 1) the violence of most of the movie would depict DS106 in a negative light and 2) there isn’t much dialogue to build off of. So ideas started forming in my head and I decided to use the two happiest parts of the film to create what you just watched. I chose some areas to dub over the audio with DS106 appropriate soundbites. I also added text and the DS106 logo to make it a cohesive representation of both what we do and what is great about the class. My favorite part and the most challenging part was adding text of things we do and making it so Selena “puts” them in her grocery cart. I used the movement controls in iMovie but it was hard to get it in a seamless movement. Hopefully the text is readable! I had a lot of fun making this whole promo.

As for the original 28 Days Later… I can’t say it was my favorite apocalyptic film. Going in, I knew it would be different from the usual types of movies I picked. Although I had watched Train to Busan previously, 28 Days Later seemed more like a thriller and gore movie than one really fixated on emotional issues and character development. This was partly true when I watched it. Throughout the movie, you get glimpses of the lives of Jim, Hannah and Frank pre-apocalypse but almost no background on Selena, a main fixture in the film. This may have been purposeful to show her as the “tough” girl with a mysterious, closed off past and to some degree, she does reveal this is true. However, she was the character I grew invested in and I was disappointed I didn’t get to know more about her.

The film’s cinematography and editing style is very notable. I wasn’t a fan of it but I can appreciate what they were trying to do and the innovation of the technique. Whenever there was an intense moment, the scenes would have quick cuts of camera angles and sound to represent the chaotic moment without showing it in its entirety. I’m bad at explaining it but you can view an example of it in the video above. This was an interesting technique that was very jarring and unsettling. However, it could be dizzying and make you feel like they skipped through core moments from big battles.

One thing I really liked about the movie was how it switched courses about 2/3 in, from a simple infection-based apocalypse movie to a more intense action-thriller with a social commentary. A big focus of the end of the film was on the military response to the infection in the UK. They single-handedly plan that the future will be one with sex slavery of women and find their victims in the two main female characters. They’re thankfully rescued but the viewer is left, or at least I was left, with reminders of tragic atrocities committed during wartime and in times when the structures of society fell apart. It was interesting to see a different sort of theme permeate this apocalyptic story.

All in all, I found the characters likeable and the action captured my attention. If you watched 28 Days Later, let me know what you thought of it below!
