Schindler’s Shawshank

Hello!

Another mash-up assignment done!

The Assignment

This assignment is worth 4 stars and can be found here. It is called “This Doesn’t Belong Here” and the exact instructions are: “For this asignment you need to mash up two different iconic movie scenes. However, you should aim to be as subtle as possible. Perhaps a famous prop that simply doesn’t belong or a character that looks a little out of place.”

The Story

First, the requirement was iconic scenes so there were already a few movies I thought of. Shawshank Redemption is on the top five best movies of all time on IMDB and it’s because it is a truly classic and beautiful film. Because it takes places in a gloomy prison atmosphere, I knew that I needed something else that would fit well and blend but still stand out as “odd” when one is really looking at it. For the thing I was going to “mash” into my Shawshank picture, I chose a person from Schindler’s List which is another classic movie and equally, or probably more morbid. Shawshank Redemption has to do with a man who is wrongly convicted of murder and follows his time in prison to his final escape. Schindler’s List is a film about a man who secretly helps jewish people during WWII. Both are films about kindness in the hearts of people and how even in the darkest times, there is some hope. I think the picture is perfection. The girl in the red dress is from Schindler’s List and she is also one of the few instances in the whole movie in which color is shown. I believe it is to demonstrate her innocence and how the innocence of many children was taken during those times. Red is usually a bold and passionate color. Red is also the color of blood.  I made the whole picture black and white because I wanted her to stand out and to make it seem like the whole image was original.

Assignment #3

The third assignment I chose to accomplish this week is called Video Game and is worth three and a half stars. This assignment required me to create a video game logo using two different games or in other words making it look like the two games are one game. I had a lot of fun creating this assignment and looking through all the different video games I know about. I originally was going to use the video games fallout 4 and far cry 4 but I couldn’t figure out how to get them to fit together using pixlr. I had a friend tell me to use Skyrim and Gears of War and found that they fit well together.I would be cool having the two games actually be combined later on to see how they would work together. I have never played either of these games but I have heard about them and they both sound fun to play.  I used an online photo shopping website called pixlr  which made creating the mashed up photo very easy.

Assignment #2

The second assignment I did was called Mashup and is worth three and a half stars. This assignment required me to put together either clips or photos of my favorite TV show character and show the characters personality. I picked a character from the show The 100, a show about children from the future who are sent back to earth to see if the earth is survivable because they space ship they live on is failing . The character I picked is one of the main female characters in the show and her name is Octavia. I picked her  because she made the biggest transformation personality wise in the show. Octavia went from a scared girl to a brave warrior. I wanted to do a montage of video clips showing her personality change but the show is so new that I couldn’t find many on YouTube. I believe the pictures do show her personality change very well though as she matures throughout the show.Octavia represents a strong female character while still being a devoted and loyal family member , friend, and girlfriend. I hope by looking at the character transformation of Octavia , you might be intrigued enough to watch the show.

Steps:

  1. Go to the ds106 page
  2. Go to the components tab and click on the assignment bank link
  3. Click on the mashup assignments link
  4. Go to page 1 and click on the Mashup assingment
  5. Find the picture you want to use and put them in movie maker
  6. Then save your movie and upload to vimeo

Pintergram

For my second Mashup Assignment, I completed Twittr for 2.5 stars. The goal of this assignment is to combine two or more of your favorite websites using a Photoshop software. You want to try and be creative, giving the site a new name while also maintaining some of the elements of each site. I decided to combine Instagram and Pinterest, two of my favorite social media platforms. Instagram allows you to post pictures with filters and captions, while sharing them with family and friends. Pinterest allows you to “pin” or save pictures of fun recipes, outfits, photography, etc. By combining the two, we have PINTERGRAM! A fun and versatile website allowing you to take pictures of your likes and interests, and giving other users the ability to save these pictures in their own folders for later use or entertainment. Here is the logo that would be used!

socialmedialogo

I created this image through Pixlr, an online photo editing software. I simply cropped the current logos for both PInterest and Instagram and then copied them directly next to each other. Then for the image logo, I used the Instagram camera and placed a clipart image of the PInterest logo onto the lens of the camera.

Call of Duty Heroes

The Work Itself

This mashup assignment is titled “Video Game Cover Mashup“, its instructions are as follows “this assignment will be completed through the use of photoshop. Take two existing video game covers and mash them up so that both can be identified but in a different style. Try to be creative in the title and artistic design.” It is currently rated 3.5/5 in regards to difficulty. My new video game is “Call of Duty Heroes”. It is available on the PS4 and XBOX1!

The Story Behind The Story

Infinity ward and Activision have created a new video game, “Call of Duty Heroes”. Building off of the recent ISIS attacks, this game aims against ISIS. Within the campaign mode, the gamer can choose between the path of Superman or Batman and fight against ISIS. There is a different storyline for Batman and Superman, but the end goal is the same, to destroy ISIS. This game is available for Xbox 1 and PS4, pre-order a copy now and get 5% off!

The Process, Narrated

I used two video game covers to create this mashup. Call of Duty Black Ops and Justice League Heroes. I found the images of these respective game covers that I liked and downloaded them. I dragged them into Photoshop from finder. I created new layers for each image. To combine the texts, I cut “heroes” from its layer and pasted it on top of “Ghosts”. I simply replaced heroes with ghosts. I did the same thing for the image of superman and batman. Using the box tool, I selected their bodies and cut it from its original layer and then pasted onto this new layer over the Call of Duty soldier image. I repeated this process for the rating pending, “infinity ward”, and “Activision”. I dragged each image off google and pasted it onto this layer. I minimized each image so it would appear that it was one image with the justice league heroes. Here a few photos to document my process.

Shining Gump

Here is the original assignment.

Movies have created lasting impressions of us. Some scenes are iconic, while others are forgettable. Movies sometimes cross paths, such as when the topic is of a war or humanitarian effort; otherwise, each movie is in a world of its own.

Forrest Gump is an adventurous journey of a man with low intelligence who seemed unlikely to become successful. However, he ends up living an enjoyable life as he astounds those around him. Forrest tells the adventures of his life to people who sit on a bench with him, hence the iconic scene below.

The Shining has become a renowned horror film since its release in 1977. It tells of a man driven into insanity who attempts to murder his wife and kid. Below is an iconic image from the movie:

Imagine Forrest Gump telling his great stories to Jack Torrance from The Shining? It may look something like the image below…

mashup-2

It seems pretty scary to me, but Forrest doesn’t seem intimidated!

Process

  1. Download two images from iconic movie scenes that might go well together.
  2. Load the images into an editing program such as Microsoft Paint.
  3. Arrange the images.
  4. Perform editing, such as air brushing the images to meld them together.
  5. Save the final image.

Thanks for reading! Enjoy!

The Dinosaur Before Time

Here is the original assignment.

Have you ever gone out to see a new movie, but were surprised to find out that it was similar to one you had seen before? Many movies are created in the image of previous ones, as it is supremely difficult to generate novel ideas.

Released this past week was The Good Dinosaur, a film by Disney Pixar. The film had reminded me of movies I had watched when I was a kid, The Land Before Time.

These movies featured the adventures of kid-dinosaurs through scenarios of drought, migration and more. They were really fun to watch because the tones were lighthearted, although serious at times. The characters each had unique personalities, and each had developed to become a stronger character by the end of the movie.

In The Good Dinosaur, the protagonist (Arlo) reminded me a lot of the main character from The Land Before Time (Little Foot). Both characters are feeble brontosauruses who had a lot of developing to do. They are both swept away into adventure, and both end up protecting their loved ones in dramatic fashion.

Below is a mashup image of the two movies.

The Good Dinosaur / The Land Before Time

Process

  1. Find 2 images online that you would like to combine into 1.
  2. Open up an graphics-editor program such as Microsoft Paint.
  3. Paste both images into the editor.
  4. Re-size / align the images.
  5. Save the newly composed image.

That’s it! Enjoy!

Friends and emoji

The Work Itself

This mashup assignment is titled “Mashing Friends And Emojis“, its instructions are to “take a picture of one of your friends or just a person that is in the moment doing something exactly like an emoji and then mash them together for comparison.” It is currently rated 3.5/5 stars for difficulty.

The Story Behind The Story

My friend Sean Prin has been sick the last few days and my roommates and I have forced him to wear a mask and maintain a a 3 ft radius from anyone of us. These tactics are in an effort to keep the rest of us healthy. His face of amazement and disbelief stems from the moment I told him that he no longer has to wear the mask. After much consideration, my roommates and I agreed that the sickness was no longer contagious so he was no longer a threat to our health. This is what friends are for…looking after each other for the better of everyone.

The Process, Narrated

I took two pictures of my friend Sean and matched to the appropriate emojis. I simply took the photos with my iPhone, emailed the images to myself and downloaded the images. Then I searched the matching emojis on google images and found the ones I wanted and downloaded those to my desktop. I uploaded the images directly into my blog post. I arranged the corresponding photos horizontally so as to show which emoji goes with what photo. Here a few photos documenting my process.

Jessie and the “Candy” Factory

WalterFactory

Well, I’ll be honest. I haven’t watched any Breaking Bad. Honestly, I haven’t watched a lot of popular shows or movies. Which means, when doing the Mashup Children’s Book assignment (2.5 stars), I had pretty much no idea what to do! It was a fun idea, and I love looking at these kinds of mashups (even if I don’t understand the pop-culture references). But I was basically grasping at things, thinking “This makes sense, right?”

I also haven’t read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Or any of Dahl’s novels. What a sad childhood I lived, what kind of English Major fraud am I! But I’ve watched both the movies multiple times, so I kind of had an idea of what to do with it. Plus, I didn’t want to use a Dr. Suess book, like the example and many of the previous students’ assignments. I thought, “What’s another popular children’s author? Roald Dahl!”

Then, after seeing the cover of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I decided that it would be pretty easy to convert that to Breaking Bad. I don’t know if this has been done before. It probably has. But I didn’t look up any examples, and I created this with my own bear hands, so I’ll just pretend that I am fully innocent of any similarities to other arts.

Process:

Step 1: Get a picture of the original cover (I used this one)

Step 2: Open it up in GIMP

Step 3: Basically just paint over it, trying to emulate the style of the original image.

Step 4: For the meth, I took one of the candies originally on the cover, copied it, and then rotated/flipped/scaled/and moved it around in various ways (and then drew the little baggies over them)

Step 5: Use the text tool and just type out what’s necessary, editing the size and line spacing as necessary

Step 6: Export the image, and that’s it!

SpaceFace

Mashup two or more of your favorite websites using Firebug or Photoshop. Try to be creative, giving the page a new name, and having attributes of both sites in the page. Take a screenshow of your work to share it.

For this 2 star assignment I used the social media sites Facebook and Myspace to create the mashup called Facespace. To do this, I searched google for the Facebook logo:

Facebook-Logo-Wallpaper

Then the Myspace logo:

Then using Microsoft Paint I painted over the icons of people in the Myspace picture and cropped the two pictures to create Facespace:
