Guess! Those! Songs!

This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or atleast the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use soundcloud to post!

For this 4 star assignment I chose my 4 favorite songs at the moment to use in the 10 second mashup;Ā Songs areĀ by Imagine Dragons, Eric Hutchinson, Life of Dillon, and Sheppard.

I started by downloading all the songs from YouTube using the YouTube to mp3 converter:

3bumper

Then once I had them downloaded, I opened all for of them with Audacity:

aud

Then I trimmed them all down to the sections and time that I needed to complete the assignment. To get the delay between tracks, I recorded no sound and copy and pasted it in the tracks to create the delay between each:

audw

Lastly, I uploaded the audio track to Souncloud and embedded it below:

Any Womanizer Want It?

Vocal Instrumental Mashup-3.5 Stars

The prompt for this assignment is:

For this assignment, you’re going to take the instrumental of a song and mash it up with the VOCALS of another song! Here’s the main challenge with this; both songs have to have similar beats per minute (bpm) to work properly together.

The Work Itself

The Story Behind the Story

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to combine a pop song from the 2000s with a rock song from 1980? Now you can! I am sure its been on your mind for years and now that it has come to fruition, it couldn’t have sounded weirder. I definitely do not suggest ever combining these two completely different genres. Although they have about the same bpm, the songs couldn’t sound more different. I know a trend is starting where country and rap are being combined so I thought I would try a similar mashup but with different genres. Just like the combination of country and rap, pop and rock are not the best musical combination in the world.

Narrating the Process

I found an instrumental version of “Any Way You Want It” by Journey (138 bpm) and combined it with an acapella version of “Womanizer” by Britney Spears (139 bpm). I was able to figure out the bpms to the songs by using this website.

Next I used Audacity to put the two together. I ended up having to reduce the noise in the instrumental version of “Any Way You Want It” because it was just too loud over Brittany Spears.

After that, I played with the volume levels and did the best I could to make the two songs work.

Somethingā€™s Not Rightā€¦

This Doesn’t Belong Here- 4 Stars

The prompt for this assignment is:

For this assignment you need to mash up two different iconic movie scenes. However, you should aim to be as subtle as possible. Perhaps a famous prop that simply doesn’t belong or a character that looks a little out of place.

The Work Itself

Doesn't Belong

The Story Behind the Story

Have you found what is out of place yet? Okay I’ll tell you, I put Gatsby toasting to the T-Rex at the end of Jurassic Park. Ā I love the movie Jurassic Park (haven’t gotten around to reading the books and the second and third movies of the series are quite mediocre), and this final scene always gets me so pumped so naturally it pumped into my right away when I read the prompt. Another favorite movie (as well as the book) is The Great Gatsby, it is such a timeless and iconic movie, I absolutely love it. The scene that pops into my mind from the Great Gatsby is when he turns to toast Nick at the party, quite iconic in many ways. The contrast of the movies also made me want to combine them even more because I thought they would be quite funny together.

The T-Rex and Gatsby also have similar characteristics which I thought paired nicely with one another. They both end up being the unexpected outcome of the story. During The Great Gatsby, everyone roots for him to get the girl, Daisy, but by the end of the story, Gatsby proves to be a fraud but so does Daisy. By the end of the movie, no one wants the two to be together. Now in Jurassic Park, the T-Rex is killing people through most of the movie but by the end of it all, the T-Rex ends up saving everyone from the Velociraptor and comes out the hero of the movie.

Narrating the Process

This assignment was pretty simple and I accomplished it in the following steps:

  1. Google images of the iconic scenes I want to use
  2. Open each image into Photoshop Elements 11
  3. Crop and copy Gatsby into the Jurassic Park scene using the “Quick Selection” toolScreenshot (68)
  4. Adjust the size accordingly (Gatsby turned out to be quite large over the Jurassic Park scene)Screenshot (69)
  5. Flatten the image togetherScreenshot (70)

What is Remix?

Instead of writing up an explanation of what you learned, instead formulate your own understanding about remix and mashup, and record a video or audio of you explaining it to someone who is not familiar; this could ba a family member, friend, neighbor, random stranger. The point is to capture a recording of your explanation and make sure we hear the other person, perhaps asking a question. If you show them any examples, do it before you record (we do not need to hear them again).Write up a blog post that includes this recording and anything else you want to share to show your understanding of remix, and explaining how the examples you watched demonstrated the form. Put some thought on whether this is a creative act and as well explore what it means for the entities that retain copyright over the media forms that are remixed. Include links and/or embeds of all media you reference.

I began by watching RiP: A Remix Manifesto and I was really confused at first I thought I was watching Project X. But then they started talking about Girl Talk. A band that remixes music, then they narrator started talking about copyrights and the legality of it. I though the conceptĀ of ideas being property was really interesting. Personally I think that ideas should be shared and manipulated in order to create new ideas. I understand copyrighting product ideas in order to make a profit, but ideas of the internet are different. The video focused on music. Asking the question who would have a problem with two videos being put together. When we started thinging about music I think of the Taylor Swift and Spotify debacle. At first I didn’t agree with Taylor Swift but once I heard her side, I thought she was correct in her argument. Swift argues against Spotify allowing listeners so listen to music for free while paying artist minimum by saying,

In my opinion, the value of an album is, and will continue to be, based on the amount of heart and soul an artist has bled into a body of work, and the financial value that artists (and their labels) place on their music when it goes out into the marketplace. Piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically, and every artist has handled this blow differently.

Music is art, and art is important and rare. Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for. Itā€™s my opinion that music should not be free, and my prediction is that individual artists and their labels will someday decide what an albumā€™s price point is. I hope they donā€™t underestimate themselves or undervalue their art.

This is somewhat different then the argument in the video, but still somewhat relevant. The conceptsĀ being brought up include; is creativity being limited?, artist build on past work, singing Happy Birthday is a copyright infringement, copyright was designed to encourage people to create, downloading music from the internet and the copyright infringement problem. I learned about copyright through this video, but I somehow don’t understand how it’s so terrible and worth suing and criminalizing. I liked the comparison of citing an authors work to using video. You can take a passage from an author and cite it and that’s okay, so why can’t you do that with video?

Everything is a Remix Part 1

  • Remix: To combine or edit existing materials to make something new
  • Covers and knockoffs are legal remixing
  • Covers: Performances of other people’s material
  • Knockoffs: Copies that stay within legal boundaries

Part 3

  • Xerox: Modern computer in 70’s- Alto and Star
  • Apple: Lisa and Machintosh
  • Mac copied Xerox but made it a household appliance
    • Combinations

Buffy vs Edward: Twighligh remixes

  • Using scene from both
  • Alternating
  • Making them work coarsely
  • Remix
  • Color difference- creator said intentionally left

I was still confused about the difference between the two so I googledĀ Remix vs. Mashup. I ended up finding a really helpful page where the question was tweeted out and responses were tweeted back. The page was created by Adam Levine, whose name I automatically recognized as a member of the DS106.

  • Particular remix technique utilizing content from multiple sources
  • Creative blending of multipleĀ songs/videos
  • Involved the combination of 2+ works that may be very different from one another
  • Blending multiple things
  • Combining 2+ elements into a coherent whole

Remix

  • Revisiting a piece of content
  • Creative personal reflection of a song/video
  • Reworking or adaptation of an existing work, may be subtle or completely redefined, may add elements from other works, but generally efforts are focused on creating an alternative version of the original
  • Scrambling something
  • Changing a work, adding new elements, reordering

Mashup

  • Particular remix technique utilizing content from multiple sources
  • Creative blending of multipleĀ songs/videos
  • Involved the combination of 2+ works that may be very different from one another
  • Blending multiple things
  • Combining 2+ elements into a coherent whole

I decided to teach my dad about remix and mashups and here’s our recording that I did on Audacity.

Pondering Dad Emoji

Mashup Assignment 1506

For this assignment you are to take a picture of one of your friends or just a person that is in the moment doing something exactly like an emoji and thenĀ mash them together forĀ comparison.

This assignment was extremely simple, besides finding a model. Once I found a model choosing an emoji was also tricky but after that it was just snapping the picture, blowing the emoji that the picture was modeled after up in Snapchat and then making a pic collage of the two images.

IMG_8775

So I took a picture of my dad, pondering how to cook the turkey.IMG_8776

Then took a picture on Snapchat of a black background.

IMG_8777

Then using the third button from the top right I placed the thinking emoji on the screen.

IMG_8778

Then I made the emoji fill the whole screen.

IMG_8779

I then went to Pic Collage and selected the two pictures.IMG_8780

And made this! Which I then saved and then wahlah! I was done!IMG_8781

Mashup Assignments 1174

This is some sort of variation on Katy Chase’s The Contest That Nobody Could Win assignment, but instead of clips from a TV show or movie, do clips from your favorite songs and see if anyone can guess what they are. Or at least the artist. Do two or three second clips using 4 or 5 songs. Make them all different. Use soundcloud to post!

I decided to do One Direction because I’m in love with their new album. I decided to start off with their first song on the X Factor, then their first single, their most popular song (Which is probably when I first heard them), and then two songs off the last album that I like.

1

First I had to download Audacity again. Then I googled One Direction songs.2

I then converted the videos to sound files using the converter I usually use.

3

I ended up downloading 5 songs, that way each song would get about 2 seconds of sound.

4

Here’s all the songs in Audacity.

5

And here’s my final project. I then exported it and uploaded it to SoundCloud.

Mashup Assignment 1520

For this assignment you are to mash together a video of clips or photos of your favorite TV character or personaility.

I decided to do this assignment on Dwight Schrute, because is there really anymore funnier than him? And who wants to watch a long video of boring TV characters?

4

First off WordPress changes their layout and it’s weird or maybe it’s been a new updates but I just got it since I had to wipe my whole computer clean. And since I had to do that I had to download Movie Maker again before I could start this assignment.

1

Then I went to the internet and started looking of videos of Dwight.

2

I converted them how I usually so with the video converter.

3

I then pasted all of the videos I downloaded into Movie Maker and then went through and just cropped all the different segments, since I was downloading videos that were already compilations. I decided to do categories of why Dwight is the best in order to spice up the assignment. So then I went through and made title pages that summed up multiple videos. I added a title and animation to the slides and then wahlah I had my finished products.

Baymax and Joy;

Disney makes some amazing movies. Their most recent ones, Big Hero 6 and Inside Out, have stolen my heart. The psychology major in me appreciates Inside Out’s story line, and the child in me loves Baymax from Big Hero 6. What better combination than these two for the Movie Mashup (4.5 stars)?

To do this, I used Pixlr’s online photo editor. I googled the poster images (Big Hero 6 and Inside Out) and added them into the editor. To add a picture on top, I selected Layer and then added an image as a layer (see photo below). I added words from the Inside Out poster and it was done!

Here’s the final product!

Bye, Bye Little Sebastian;

Character development is extraordinarily important to keep a show alive. I think the best example of development can be seen in Parks and Rec’s Andy Dwyer. For A Changing Character (4.5 stars), I decided to showcase his development!

Here are some screen shots from WMM showcasing how I added a title and how I split the video clips:

Andy Dwyer Mashup WMM 2 Andy Dwyer Mashup WMM

And, here is the final video! It showcases Andy going from singing on Ann’s couch to getting a job and singing in front of thousands of people (with a ghost horse)!

Guess These!

Can you guess the five different songs in this 10 second mashup? They’re a bit all over the place! To be honest, I could have added so many different songs to this, or made it really hard and picked my favorite instrumental songs, but I just picked a bunch of random songs that I listen to on Youtube every other week or so. But, since the point of the 10 second song Mashup assignment (3.5 stars) is for you guys to try and guess the songs,

Hints!:
1) It peaked at number 4 on theĀ Billboard HotĀ 100
2) It’s the theme song of a character in an animated web series
3) The artist has a more well-known song that peaked at number 2 on theĀ Billboard Hot 100
4) Uh……..it’s by an American Christian folk singer? And it’s about boats?
5) It’s from Animal Crossing (which narrows it down to about 150 songs)

My music preferences range from “I like this song because it makes me want to kick open a door and beat someone up” to “I like this song because it sounds pretty”. I’m a very simple person. But really, I know a ton of people who love certain genres and certain bands, and I’ve personally never felt that way. If I like a song, then I like this song. Sometimes I’ll look up more songs by that artist and start liking those songs, but typically I just let songs come to me.

That means a lot of myĀ actual favorite songs are from video games. So, like, Toriel’s house fromĀ Undertale, or “The Lament of Falling Stars” fromĀ Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (which I totally now realize I should have included in this mashup!) I decided not to use those, because I feel like they would be harder to recognize for a lot of people, and I do have favorite songs that have actually played on the radio (even if it’s a radio from, like, 2006).

Anyway, still wondering what these songs could be? Well, have some answers!
Song 1, Song 2, Song 3, Song 4, Song 5

Process:

1: Downloaded all the songs off Youtube using the ClipConverter

2: Imported those songs into Audacity

3: Selected 2-second sections from various parts of the song (parts I thought best exemplified the song)

4: Pasted them all together on one line, and put little spaces in between so it wasn’t a mess of sound

5: Exported the file and uploaded it to Soundcloud
