Will Ferrell Highlights

The Work Itself

This video assignment is titled “Favorite Actor/Actress Highlight Reel“. Its instructions are to “create a 30 to 60 second highlight reel of your most enjoyable movie scenes from your favorite Actor/Actress”. It is rated by the public 4/5 stars for difficulty. I created a YouTube video of my favorite scenes and clips of Will Ferrell and mashed them together to make a highlight reel. Will Ferrell is one of the funniest, and goofiest actors I have ever seen. My video is titled “Will Ferrell Highlights“, it is on my YouTube channel.

The Story Behind The Story

Will Ferrell is one of the funniest actors of my time. Every movie of his is a comical. My favorite Will Ferrell movie is “Talladega Nights, The Ballad of Ricky Bobby“. There are so many great scenes and clips of Will Ferrell, so I wanted to a create a compilation of his funniest moments in television. If there ever becomes an award for most comical actor in the last decade or even century, then viewers will be inclined to nominate Will Ferrell after watching this video. I have seen almost every movie that Will Ferrel stars in, and have laughed at every film.

The Process, Narrated

I cut and pasted several clips from a handful of Will Ferrell YouTube videos. I downloaded the videos using http://en.savefrom.net/. I then opened QuickTime Player and loaded the video I had just previously downloaded. In QuickTime, I trimmed the video to use only the portions I want. I did this by dragging the yellow bar to the left and right in the timeline. Right after, I clicked “TRIM” to complete the editing. I saved the video, and inserted it into YouTube video editor. In the video editor, because the video is edited, I simply just dragged it into the “insert video” section, created a title slide and that was it. I uploaded it to my channel and published it to the public. Here are some photos documenting the described process.

Chicken Logo Needs Chicken

One of my favorite places to get some quick food is at Kentucky Fried Chicken. However after further review of the KFC logo I noticed something is missing. There is a serious lack of chicken on the KFC logo. However, me being a gracious person decided to edit the KFC logo to include that missing chicken.

KFC_Logo_chicken

This is a 3 star mashup assignment for Ds106 titled Consumer Mashup. This was created by getting the KFC logo into GIMP and then adding chicken legs to create the KFC letters.

Rick’s Journey

He lies motionless in his hospital bed, then *GASP!*

“Nurse! Nurse,” he whispers through coughs. There is no one there. He tries to use the call button on the bedside. No response. Nothing.

He rolls over and falls to the floor. Panicking, he gets to his feet and looks around the room. Interestingly, the bouquet of flowers on the table are all dried and dead. He staggers to the door and out into the deserted hallway.

“Hello? Hello! Anybody?! Where is everyone? Did they all go on break at the same time?”

He shuffles down the hall, still looking for someone, anyone.  At the end of the hall, he sees something strange – a set of double doors are held shut with a wooden board.. Why would someone barricade the doors, and who would want to? His first instinct is to open it and see if anyone needs help. He is, after all, a police officer, and it is his sworn duty to serve and protect.  He removes the board and pulls the door open.

What he finds inside is not normal! Everyone he sees is dead! Decayed! Rotting! He shrieks and one of the things lunges toward him.  He struggles to get away from the thing. “What are you doing! Get off! Can’t you understand?!”

“Unngghhhh,” the walking corpse groans.  It was almost as if it wanted to eat him! He was terrified. In what world had he awakened?! How much time had passed; Days Gone Bye?? He struggled to the stairwell, and finally rid himself of the dead, but walking creature.

He was alone, in this strange and twisted reality. What was he to do? Where was he to go? He had to get to the bottom of this. Surely Lori and Carl had to know. He hoped they were safe at home, just waiting for him. Rick had to find answers.

Weeks have passed. Who knows how long it’s been, months, years, it’s hard to say.  All that Rick knows is that he is surviving. He has to.

He’s made it long enough to get out of Atlanta, and somehow make it to New Mexico. I guess there wasn’t much left of Alexandria, and maybe Nebraska wasn’t so nice either.

On this particular day, Rick is out on a run, searching for more supplies.  A storm is brewing in the distance and he knows he needs to find shelter and quick.  The following is what ensues when he finds an old warehouse-looking building with the sign only partially remaining above the door. From what he could tell, part of the sign read “Radio”…

This assignment was a mashup of three previous assignments and completes the Mash Thyself, Before Ye Trash Thyself assignment, worth 4 stars! For this assignment, we had to use existing content that we had previously created this semester.

This assignment in pretty simple, yet very powerful.  Mash-up your own work!  Take at least 3 things you’ve done this semester, and combine them together to make one cohesive thing.

I started by looking back over all that I had created, including works on my SoundCloud and Flickr accounts.  On SoundCloud, I found two creations that fit together very nicely! And for the third piece, I had to go all the way back to week 1! These three works that I chose all had a theme that all dealt with Rick, from The Walking Dead.  I started by copying the story that I had written from Week 1, and then expanded on it a little, giving for a nice lead in to my other two pieces for this assignment.  The two audio clips were pretty easy to combine using Audacity, and I just uploaded it as a new track on SoundCloud.  I really like the idea of this assignment, because it makes you reflect on what you have already created.  It also lets you build on what you already have, so you don’t have to start from scratch for this assignment.

This is a 4 star mashup assignment for Ds106 titled Movie Mashup. I created the movie poster by getting the two movie posters into Gimp and then adding Harold and Kumar onto the Pineapple Express movie poster.

Are You My Father?

For 2.5 stars this week, I completed the Mashedup Children’s Book assignment.  When I first started, I didn’t quite know where to start.

Mashup a children’s book based on another cultural artifact. For example, framing Dr. Who as a children’s book in the aesthetic of a Dr. Seuss’s work.

From the example given, I knew that I wanted to play off of the Dr. Seuss theme. I started out by searching for Dr. Seuss books and thinking about which one would be a nice play-on-words. My original idea was using “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and maybe mixing it with power rangers, but that would be a mouthful to say, especially for a children’s book… I mean think about it, what adult would want to read “One Power Ranger, Two Power Ranger, Red Power Ranger, Blue Power Ranger” to a kid?? I’d need to stop for a drink of water after every page!

I finally found the book titled “Are You My Mother?” and immediately had a brilliant idea of what to do.. Change it to father instead of mother, and what have you??

Are You My Father?

I used Photoshop to create this cover, and although it is not in the theme of Dr. Suess, it still is a decent cover! I found the images of the characters in an image search, and then added the text and the gradient.  I chose to have Luke on the darker background and Darth on the lighter to juxtapose their roles in the films.  The text color reflects their actual sides in the films, and Luke’s name matches his light saber color! I couldn’t decide on the angle to have the gradient. The angle I ended up using reflects the divide between the two characters and their placement in this image.  The other option was to have it from corner to corner.  Using the angle I did also makes the cover less symmetrical, which I think adds to the aesthetic. Although I have never seen any of the Star Wars movies, I still think this would make for a comical children’s book..

Remix Part 2

ScreenHunter_05 Nov. 13 11.17I chose to remix a mashup assignment that I completed a few weeks ago.  For the original assignment I chose to make a collage of my friend and the monkey emoji side by side.  My friend is covering her mouth just like the monkey is doing so.  For the remix we had to edit different things throughout the photo and let the audience guess to see if they could find what was exactly changed in the picture.  The orginal photo is shown first and the edited photo is shown second.  I will give you a hint there were four changes that took place.

ScreenHunter_09 Nov. 13 15.04

1For this assignment I used paint to make changes on the picture.  If you have not been able to tell what is so different I will tell you below:
I changed the border line of the cabinet to a dark gray
I made the diamond on her ring look bigger

I changed her striped shirt to all black

I changed the gold clip on her shoulder to purple

Are You Sure They’re All Cats?

For 4 stars this week, I completed the This Doesn’t Belong Here assignment.  I didn’t quite know where to start, but we had to choose movies.  I originally was thinking of trying to combine The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.  I started by doing a Google image search for The Walking Dead, and came across the poster of Rick and Carl walking on the train tracks.  I immediately thought of the scene from The Aristocats when the kittens are walking along the train tracks.

For this assignment you need to mash up two different iconic movie scenes. However, you should aim to be as subtle as possible. Perhaps a famous prop that simply doesn’t belong or a character that looks a little out of place.

Once I started looking for scenes from The Aristocats, I thought it would be a great juxtaposition if I did The Aristocats and 101 Dalmatians! After finding both images online, I used Photoshop to add the puppy into the cat picture.  Since the colors of the cats were sort of grey, the white of the dog stuck out like a sore thumb.  I used the same color as Marie to try and darken the whiteness of the dog, so it looked like he blended in more. I probably could have gone for a shade or two darker on the pup, but I didn’t want to risk greying out his spots.

The Aristocats?

We’re Going Down!

For this mashup assignment, we had to take two iconic movie scenes and mash them together.

My inexperience with media in general is a detriment to this assignment. Iconic movie scenes? None ring a bell.

I ultimately did find a scene I thought would be appropriate to mashup, this movie poster of a scene with the Enterprise crashing down to earth gives a plot of action and a convenient blank space to work a little magic, something where inserting something won’t make it seem crowded because if anything, the space is TOO blank.

star-trek-into-darkness-poster-excerpt-660x577

So what to put into it? I didn’t think much of the movie itself, so why don;t we insert something that pokes fun at the plot? The Enterprise is crashing, so why not give it a reason to crash? I considered putting in a spaceship from some other series, like a star destroye, but ultimately decided that would be too expected. So, to keep with a somewhat comedic feel here, I bent the rules of the assignment and swiped an object from what I consider an iconic opening scene of one of the better TV shows to travel the airwaves:

So, I brought up powerpoint, indserted the movie poster in a slide, then a picture of the barrel monkey from the futurama wiki. Thanks to the raltively constant background, powerpoint had no trouble removing the background of the photo when I inserted it into the slide. Just to keep some perspective, I also tilted the image slightly. The end result:

Monkey Trek
I was relatively happy with the end product. I considered darkening the gorilla and planet to make it fit in better with the dark colors of the movie, but I also wanted to keep the lighter cartoony feel that the brighter colors provided. The ship is central, but the brighter color almost demands attention, but it is small enough to get second notice.

Vacation on a Desert Island

On hitting the mashup button, I got the “Jump Opposer” mashup, which states that I need t write an opposite version of the assignment, one that has the opposite of the intended effect.

Let us write a nightmarish view of Welcome to Paradise.

Well good sir, you have done it again. You have truly done it again. I don’t know how you managed to unbuckle both our seatbelts, pull the emergency exit handle, and grab me while you were being sucked out the airplane all in one fluid motion, but you sir, are apparently amazing at multitasking.

Now here we are, stranded on a miniature sand island in the middle of the ocean. Seriously, I thought these things only existed in comics! At least the comic islands had a little palm tree for shade, we are less lucky than that!

At any rate, at least the airline has a good idea of where we jumped plane. If we are lucky, a pontoon plane will find us before we die of thirst. That will likely take a few days.

So now that we have so drastically changed our vacation setting, what do we have to look forward to? Sunburn. Lots of sunburn. An sand mites. Seriously, this is a desert island in the middle of the ocean! Why is there any living thing on this island?!? Do the sandmites get a steady flow of unfortunate souls to keep their population thriving?  Will we find piles upon piles of bones 3 inches under the sand?

Brilliant move sir, simply brilliant.

So, the opposite of a dream vacation is obviously a nightmare vacation. I still wanted to keep a certain comedic feel about it. The emotion calculator (made up by me) says terror + comedy = incredulity. So that is the tone I was going for.

On continuing down the comedy line, I recalled all the Far-Side comics I have seen set with some number of people stranded on an island. This aligned with the vacation stereotype of a beach vacation, so I took it and ran.

Switch the Soundtrack!

For my last mashup assignment, I decided to do Switch the Soundtrack for 3 stars! This assignment turned out to be pretty fun! Basically, I had to use a video clip from one movie and replace the audio with sound from another, but the change had to make sense! I decided to use a small clip from a Mickey Mouse cartoon short called “Doggone Biscuits” for the video, and an audio clip from Mean Girls for the audio! Here’s my mashup!

The making of this assignment was easier than it seems! First, I chose my “I’m a mouse, duh” sound clip from moviesoundclips.net. I downloaded it to my computer, then uploaded it into my iMovie. Then, I went looking for mouse videos. As soon as I stumbled across Mickey Mouse short videos I knew I’d find something! I quickly scanned through this particular video looking for a moment where I could overlay the Mean Girls quote. And I was super lucky, because I think I found a great point in the short to make my mashup with! I downloaded the short using savefrom.net, then imported it into my iMovie. From there I just cut the portion of the video that I wanted, then turned the audio to the clip off. Then I dragged the audio clip I wanted to use over top, and voila my mashup was complete! Hope you guys like it!
