Marlene Got A Theme

For this assignment, you have to find your theme song. I decided that instead of doing mine, I would find Marlene her own song! I chose this song because it starts off kind of dark and mysterious and then gets fast paced, which is what Marlene’s life is doing now. When I introduced her, I mentioned that she works in a saloon and all that and alluded to something going on behind the scenes, but didn’t specify what. The plot thickened some in the sound effects story, so I thought a theme that followed these trends was only fitting. I used Audacity and added the violin to the song (from that free sound website) and played around a little with the guitar later on, but I thought for the most part, the theme was pretty spot on. Enjoy!

Blair’s theme song

I chose to use the instrumental version of 3 doors down absolutely (story of a girl).  I chose this song because I feel like the lyrics do a great job expressing Blair.  Blair’s character is sort of dull, shy, and depressed.  She suffers with problems that no one understands and feels as if she goes unnoticed.  This song expresses Blair’s feelings and shows that even the slightest thing she does (a smile) actually is noticed.

“This is a story of a girl, who cried a river and drowned the whole world, and while she looks so sad in photographs, i absolutely love her when she smiles”

Personal Anthem

Howdy! (The Final Product is down below)

For this assignment (worth 4 stars), I tried my hand at making my own personal theme. Is it good? Probably not, but the beat is pretty catchy!

Everyone after they listen to my theme. Kidding.
Everyone after they listen to my theme. Kidding.

Coming up with a theme for myself was really hard, to be honest I had no idea in mind. I just knew I wanted an upbeat sort of feel to the song to reflect my personality. I consulted with my best friend- Google to find a site that would enable me to make a bubbly instrumental theme. Eventually I found- Soundnation. For those amateur first time song makers (like me), this website comes with some beats to enable you to put an piece together a song!

The process:

Okay so while I said this site is extremely useful since it already has some samples for you to work with, tinkering around with it until you get the prefect sound is highly recommended.

First, the website gives you options of what samples you want to piece together by genres type. I went with Electronica because I figured many upbeat sorts of tempos can be found there.

Then, under the Electronica tab you are given beats with 90 BPM, and 95 BPM. I chose one, and for anyone working with this, I would only choose one type of BPM so you don’t have to mess with the pitch which could throw off the whole songs emotions/ feeling.

Once I chose the beats I wanted at 90 BPM, I had the challenge of putting the song together. What I did was on each column I staggered each beat so it would have a repetitive tune. Then, if I felt one beat wanted to be tuned down more than the other I could change it on the Audio Channel volume bar. The main problem I had with this was finding the right places to pair off different beats to make it sound not so “mashed up” but rather have a flow to it.

Black Widow, Baby!

Since we are forming and expanding our Black Widow Agency this week, I feel that we definitely need a theme song to represent what we do. That is why I chose the  “Your Theme Song” assignment, which states: If you had the opportunity to create your own theme music, what would it sound like? Get creative and create your own … Continue reading Black Widow, Baby!

“I am Free” House of Noir Getaways Theme Song (4 pts.)

Introducing the House of Noir Getaways agency. With us, you can make your greatest and most discrete noir escape when times are troublesome or threatening. Lana del Rey has been one of my favorite artists of our time since her music encapsulates complex emotion. Her song “Ride” details the story of the necessity to make a great escape and see the world while also moving on into the promises of the future. But purely, it conveys the idea of freedom, which is something each one of our clients is guaranteed. Whether going to the warm sands of a tropical island or the snow-kissed mountains, House of Noir Getaways can take you there through different types of transportation. With our co-sponsors, Stardust Airlines and the Abandon agency, you are given the options to travel by plane, car, ship, etc. This is placed into the song as a way to tell our clients that all travel and escape to freedom is entirely possible with the help of House of Noir Getaways. When creating this with Janelle, we chose to keep some of Lana’s personal quotes that went with this song so that listeners could connect to the freedom she herself has. Quotes such as “When I’m at war with myself, I ride. I just ride,” “I am free.” This theme song is what our agency is all about: giving you the freedom you desire and making your noir disappearance a reality.

Andrea May Carr—A short film

If Andrea May Carr had a theme song, it would go a little like this:

Eastside Theme song……well almost

This is v1.0 of the theme song for Eastside and “Jerry”. It is only version 1.0. I still need to find some sounds to add to the music.

I didn’t have a character or person to focus on the unit right before this one. Others who are on the #noir106 journey established their characters in unit 1. The idea of the character or theme from the beginning makes a lot of sense in traveling this ds106 path.

I began with lots of analyzing where in the time of the life of my Dad the story will take place. I have been lost in 1953-56 high school year books, photo albums and memories. The other wall I kept hitting was whether this is an intro bumper, a theme song, or a promo. Because I am not really doing a radio show I get caught up in radio show focus instead of how I will use these. I will probably still use this theme for part of his story. It has brought to light that what I really need is an intro bumper to tell who the story is about. A next audio assignment will be to do something as an intro bumper.

I could have chosen to do something that was from the late 50’s – but that reminded me of Happy Days (the TV Show) and didn’t seem to fit. My Dad loved music – all kinds. His records and CDS and the music channels on cable, the radio he would set up when we would go on vacation in northern Wisconsin each year.

A mix of all his favorites would probably sound like a strange mix. I decided to stay focused on the Eastside story and him as a handsome young man navigating new adulthood in the late 50’s. Determining what that sound would be had me listening to all sorts of things – and boy can you go on a tangents and find some neat things you weren’t looking for – but they eat up your time!

One of his favorites in music was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I decided to take one of their songs and remix it.

Taste of Honey was the song I chose. I remember it playing on the record player when I was a kid . It was way too peppy and dance like for a theme. I worked with the speed of the clips and slowed them down to get a different sound. I also cut portions out to keep it under 1.5 minutes. In trying to get it to sound like it was one song and not something chopped up, I used WAH WAH to blend sounds, the envelope and lots of adjusting, and fade in and fade out.

Other tools I used were normalize and noise reduction. After the noise reduction, I had to go back and increase the sound decibel. Normalize got rid of the clipping. Noise reduction softened the recording sounds. Increasing the decibel meant I could hear the product without cranking my sound up all the way.

The UNDO command became my best friend  but still turned on me at times! The part I haven’t done is add some other sounds yet. That will be version 1.x-2.

After a good 5 hours of tweaking  – I called it version one.

As for ds106/noir106 I don’t think this hits the targets others are going towards. But for my learning plan, it did keep me in Audacity, in audio editing, and in building that skill and understanding so I am going to call it a success.

Keep Knocking (4 Stars)

I decided to make a theme song that captured how Harvey felt as he traveled across the country trying to make a living by knocking on people’s doors. “Yes, we seem up for the gig when we’re coming through, baby, but take a look at us when the road slows down and we’re beat, I tell you, beat!” It’s a love/hate relationship that toys with your heart like nothing else. A thrill and a long gaze that is hard to place. “Give it a couple more days and I’ll be alright…”

Theme song assignment

For four stars of my audio assignments I decided to do the “make your own theme song”. I wanted to make this theme song in spirit of my Noir character Jack Sadler. I used samples and synthesizers to create this ambient, relaxed song that I imagine would represent the life of Jack Sadler. The song is obviously created with more modern sounds in mind then those that would be around in Jack’s time period.

The sound editing was all fairly simple. The beat and synthesizers were created from the ground up. The bass added was created out of a simple single sine wave layered over other sine waves in different keys. When I exported the song the volume was a bit too loud but other then that I think it went well. I plan on going back and fixing the volume at a later time.

Bloody Knuckles

When my character walks in, he hears church bells ringing because he knows your next.
