An Ear-worm From ’94

Can’t Get It Out Of My Head – Assignment

I stumbled upon this audio assignment and I knew exactly what song I would record myself whistling. This particular song is from an animated movie that came out it 1994. This song is extremely catchy, so once I hear it I can never really stop humming, whistling, or singing it!

I recorded myself whistling using the Windows Voice Recorder application and uploaded the audio through the add media function within WordPress. I could have embedded my SoundCloud post with their media player, but SoundCloud was being glitchy so I improvised!

I’m sure everyone will be able to guess the song the moment they hear the audio. But give it a shot. You can listen below or you can go to my post on SoundCloud.

Yes! It’s Hakuna Matata from Disney’s The Lion King.  The tune is so bright and happy that I seriously have a difficult time removing it from my mind. I won’t even realize that I’m still humming it hours after I hear parts of the chorus. If the song is already in my head and someone says a trigger word like “no worries” or “a wonderful phrase,” I can tack on another few days of Hakuna Matata brain. Due to the positive, upbeat nature of the song, I am generally pleased with having it stuck in my head.

What’s That Song?

I have a love/hate relationship with those new songs that come on the radio every other song. I love them because they are super catchy, but also hate them because they are catchy. Even if I don’t necessarily like the song, I always end up getting it stuck in my head and that usually lasts for a solid week, which can be very annoying at times; I’m sure everyone has had this happen multiple times in your life. The assignment was to think of a recent song that has been stuck in your head and record yourself whistling it and not posting the title of the song with it.
Now, picking the song that was new and has been stuck in my head was tricky because there are SO many new songs out that right now that are constantly being played. I thought of a few right off the bat, like, “I Will Never Forget You” and “Don’t Let Me Down”. When I started to record those, though, I played it back and I myself couldn’t really tell what the song was, so I came up with another one that had many different beats throughout it with a more distinct sound to detect. I didn’t add the title of the song to it because I wanted to see if others could figure out what it was. Here’s a few clues:
The singer is a male.
He originally started his music career in a boy band, but then went solo.
This song is from the new Troll movie.
To make this recording I simply just used SoundCloud to record myself whistling. I had to do it a few times because i would mess up in the middle of it or just wasn’t happy with how it sounded.

Name that Tune

This assignment looked like a fun one to do, despite it only contributing a few stars. The prompt was that we whistle a tune without revealing what the tune is so others can guess! I admit, I’m a sucker for these kinds of prompts. I love referring to things and hoping others can catch on. I also love whistling, so this assignment really called to me.

I used a USB microphone to get decent quality in my whistling, since catching the tune without all the air takes a bit of effort. I’m happy with the result, short as it is. The assignment is true to its star rating, but no less fun for it!

Can’t Get It Out Of My Head

  • I had a blast creating this assignment, I am incorporating my character by again using her “ex” boyfriend. She is saying to him she is over it and never wanted to sing about it because she didn’t want him to think she still liked her. Good luck trying to guess the song – its really popular but my whistling doesn’t make sense! I didn’t whistle the whole song, but this is one star and completes my western character incorporation!

ps: if you don’t guess its – love yourself

Whistle while ya work

This week is all about the creation of our very own ds106 radio show, however this first assignment has no connection to it whatsoever so I decided to get it out of the way. This was a snippet of me whistling a song that always gets stuck in my head and it’s sung by today’s pop “Queen”.  Can you guess what I am “attempting” to whistle??

This assignment was worth 1.5 stars

Audio Assignment – Can’t Get Out of My Head

I had a lot of fun with this assignment, mainly because I enjoy whistling. It was easy to record myself on audacity and upload the file onto SoundCloud. Can you guess what song it is? It’s the chorus of a pretty popular song that I heard on the radio (and I just couldn’t get it out of my head!)

Not too cold to whistle…

So, when I came across the can’t get it out of my head assignment,  I instantly knew what song I would choose. It has literally been stuck in my head for weeks, and last night I actually sat around wondering why it has been there so long. I like to remix it with baby applicable lyrics (I am not very good at it) and sing it to my daughter. This was much easier because all I needed was the tune. My next step in life is to figure out how to record myself whistling without hearing my breath and such…

Anyhow, I don’t know because I am not quite in my youth, and I listen to music that is older than me, but I think the song is highly recognizable even if I had butchered the whistling, and not to brag, but I didn’t. Anyway, I hope that for anyone that listens and recognizes the song, they get it stuck in their head as well so that I am not the only one. For anyone that can’t figure it out and is really curious, the answer is here.

Unit 7

I was part of a radio broadcast both in high school and college so I have some experience as far as being a DJ but not as much when it comes to producing a taped and scripted radio show. I noted that in the specs it says we should create a piece that’s equal to 5 minutes times the amount of people we have – 40 minutes is a long broadcast! Anyhow, I like the idea of perhaps exploring the idea of time travel (perhaps because I just saw the Stephen Hawking movie in which he speculates about the nature of time). That’s just an idea. It seems to be that radio interviews are the easiest to produce (and similar to what I do every day) while radio dramas are the most difficult simply because of the nature of scripting, the number of different people involved, along with the sound effects and sound elements that go along with it. However, if its a well-scripted suspense or adventure story (like the Sherlock Holmes Basil Rathbone radio shows linked through the Internet archives), the number and importance of sound effects is less, though the need for a strong script and good characters is much greater.  In Rob Watson’s article , he describes the radio drama as an exercise in imagination – a theater-of-the-mind.  It challenges us to use a very limited and simple set of tools to create our stories – just voice and other sounds. I found it interesting that he would then challenge us to go beyond the simple tools that we’ve been given and try to re-imagine how to create a radio drama. I suppose one way that modern radio drama could take advantage of new technology would be to use the kinds of effects that were never possible before – flange or echo effects – or ones that manipulate the voice to create a new kind of character or to instill mood or drama. In Ira Glass’s article , he also talks about simplification, but in this case, I vbelieve he is simply trying to save us from ourselves. I’ve seen it a million times at MSNBC, where new writers try to write in a way that makes them sound intelligent or uses big words and all it does is complicate when often is a simple story. The toughest thing to do sometimes can be to find a simple, conversational way to say something. In Ira’s article, he uses this same idea to encourage producers to find the human element of a story – in other words, the most relatable part. In the same way, our writing should be something that all of our listeners can easily understand.

Three audio assignments

Create bumper

Create commercial

Create foley sounds – from 1:31-2:00

This wasn’t too hard – interesting to see how so many of the sound effects are made. I was more comfortable making them myself then finding stuff to make the sounds. My son enjoyed watching this. For mine to line up, you have to start the video at 1:28.

Soundboard conversation – 4 stars – AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments1544  (http://www.soundboard.com/register.aspx)

Can’t Get it out of my Head – 2 stars – AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments1526

Did the whistling thing – pretty easy to guess I think, but maybe that’s because it is, actually, stuck in my right now.

Being a Music Producer – 3 1/2 stars – AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments1179 (975-MASHUP)

I had an interesting idea to mashup Rage Against the Machine and CCR but it hasn’t worked out – yet. Having trouble figuring out how to mute and adjust speeds while trading off tracks.

Teezee reference – 1 1/2 stars – AudioAssignments, AudioAssignments1117

I found a good Twilight Zone reference in Futurama. I downloaded it from youtube using the website, YouTube to MP3, then imported the download to Audacity, trimmed off the pieces I didn’t need, then uploaded it back to my desktop and then to soundcloud. Added a picture this time too.

Can’t Get It Out Of My Head

This assignment is titled “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” and is worth 2 stars. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/cant-get-it-out-of-my-head/

This was a pretty easy assignment to complete. All I did was record myself whistling to a song that’s been in my head lately on my phone. Then I uploaded the clip onto my computer and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Can you guess what song this is?

Audio Assignment:

Can’t Get It Out Of My Head 2?

For this assignment we were supposed to whistle a song that has gotten stuck in our head before. Then we were to upload it to Soundcloud and let our classmates guess what song it was.

I chose to do this assignment for my character, Emma. She tends to get songs stuck in her head all the time. Usually it happens as shes driving over to a crime scene. Her coworkers and the coppers always look at her strange when she starts whistling a happy song at a morbid time.

This song is one that her father used to sing to her all the time. She used to have a lot of nightmares when she was little, so her father would sing her back to sleep.

For this assignment I just used Soundcloud to record my whistling. I directly uploaded it from there and the embedded it into this post.
