New Genre

The first one is a remixed bhangra beat of the song All The Way Up with Fat Joe and Remy Ma.  To be honest I enjoy them both but I think I might be biased because I am a hugeee fan of bass in my music and the original just does that for me.  That’s not to say that I don’t like the bhangra version because it is also very energetic in nature but I think they both have different kinds of hype if that makes since. I like the drum and strings in the remix a lot though, just not as good as that bass beat in the original!  I would not have found this beat without my girlfriend so a shout out to her, something new to add to my playlist!

Let it go!!!

I am not much of a rock-and-roll person but I really enjoyed listening to Let it go’s rock version. I found that the rock version captivated emotions of the song well and it also triggered similar yet different emotions from me. I cannot really say which one I like better; although I am an advocate for original versions of songs, I definitely liked the rock version of the song for itself. I also liked the fact that it was not much of a heavy metal because I think that heavy metal adds too much ferocity. Overall, it was really cool to watch the artist play guitar and the guitar suite the song very well especially for the song’s climax. This is Agent Nice Guy’s favorite song–it relieves her stress because it speaks for her at the end of the day, “Let it go!!!”

Agent Smith – Compare

Greetings fellow agents…which song do you like better? I know this is an odd question, but at least we do not need to use soundcloud for this current….task.

I like this original version because the beat is just right and I love the lyrics. Not to mention the music video is just icing on the cake, telling a story of war and misfortune about two war buddies going different ways after becoming civilians again. It brings awareness to veterans that are discarded. At the end the person struggling finally gets help and it’s very touching.

This is a different version of “Wrong Side of Heaven” from acoustics.

Out of the two, I’ve always favored the original song more than any cover, remix, or anything else. There are a few exceptions (such as Summertime Sadness). It also does not capture the same amount of charm as the original.

Until next time, secret agents…agent smith, signing off.

Remake that Genre

The genres are close to one another but I feel that the Pentatonix is in a different genre than the Imagines Dragons is more Alternative Rock and Pentatonix is considered more of a Pop genre though I feel that since they are an accapella group brings more of the sound of a different genre to the song.

Also I like the Pentatonix version of the song because there are more interesting harmonies. Also with only the use of a few instruments and the rest of the music being produced with their voices brings a whole other level to the song and it songs more haunting and they make the listener feel the song as opposed to just hearing it.

What Genre?

For this assignment, Remake That Genre!, you were meant to find a song from one genre and then find the same song but in a different genre. People may think that this is hard, but I found this to be fairly easy for an odd reason. Since I used to work at certain restaurant establishment where they usually only play jazz music over the speakers, *cough* Olive Garden….They would often play some of my favorite rock music, IN JAZZ FORM!! They have forever ruined these songs for me…So, instead of picking one song, I decided to pick several.

Also, as a side note, I embedded these as YouTube videos instead of SoundCloud because SoundCloud doesn’t have the full original songs on it. They just have a little 30 second preview… SO, without further a due, here are the songs that I could remember at least from the job I had at the Garden of Olives.

The first one is Mr. Brightside by The Killers.

The Original

The Jazz Version

Next we have, Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

The Original

The Jazz Version

Alright those were the main two that would legitimately be played at Olive Garden all of the time. Now there are several artists that change popular songs into jazz forms such as Paul Anka, Richard Cheese, or my personal favorite Max Raabe where you can see a whole playlist of Max Raabe covers that I love! Another thing that I think is worth mentioning is a channel that I listen to on YouTube that making covers and change songs to sound like ALL sorts of genres such as a 20’s swing, James Bond style, or a 60’s swing. Their channel’s name is Robyn Adele Anderson and here is a playlist called Postmodern Jukebox, it features her covers that I HIGHLY suggest people listen to!!

Now, those were the real examples, while this next one is HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE, I can not stress that enough. Even though it is inappropriate, I still think it is really funny. This song is “My Neck” by Khia and then the second song is the Jazz form of it.

What a Fresh Coat of Memes Can do

This is my response to the Remake That Genre! assignment, worth 3 stars. I had to find two versions of the same song in different genres and compare and contrast them.  Here we have “Death By Glamour,” the theme that plays during the player’s battle against Mettaton EX in Toby Fox’s Undertale. The song is a cross between a retro video game style and a dramatic runway anthem. It is a bit of a strange combination for a boss fight anthem, but it fits the character’s over-the-top, outrageous, and showboating personality and the reality-show theme of the fight extremely well.

Now here is a cover of the song played entirely on pitch-shifted air-horn samples for a red-hot dank meme MLG (major league gaming) sound.

I picked this song and this particular cover for a very special reason. Undertale is a great example of a game that became extremely popular because of the internet. For a while, it was really difficult to go anywhere on the internet without seeing Undertale fanart. All of this fan generated noise and content got more people to play the game and then more people created fanart and music about it. It was an excellent example of an internet feedback loop.

The cover I picked is a great example of what happens to content that gets popular on the internet. “Death by Glamour” got the meme treatment. The air horn is a harsh, loud, and shrill tool often used at sporting events by fans to show support for their favorite teams. This spread to the world of video games and the humble air horn became a symbol of competitive gaming. Any song can now be turned into an MLG anthem through the use of the destroyer of eardrums.

My preference between these two versions of this song is definitely for the original. This should be no surprise, as the airhorn remix is not intended to be enjoyable to listen to. It is meant to be funny and annoying and it is meant to bring people together through common interests and the universal language of memes. It is a great example of internet culture and Undertale is a great example of what happens when content creators embrace internet culture.

Remake that genre!

Pick a song from any genre such as, rock, pop, latin music, electronica, etc. and then find another version of that song in a DIFFERENT genre. Once you find the song in a different genre post the original and the remake and explain which you like better and why. Be creative and have fun!
