Sounds of My Day

A collection of sounds from my average day.

Sounds of My Life

3 Stars

For this assingment I had to record sound that I hear in my life on a regular basis. The first sound is my apartment door opening and hearing my roommate watching TV. The second sound is pages flipping in textbook and novels I have to read for my classes. The third sound is my personal favorite. Its my dog Scarlet snoring. Lastly, the fourth sound is typing. I spend a lot of time on my computer for classes as well as my jobs, so typing is a constant during my day.

My background noise came from Bensound. The hardest part of this assignment was figuring out what to include. There are constant noises going on around us, and its hard to pinpoint which ones are the most important to mention.

city sounds

For this assignment, I recorded glimpses of different sounds in the city.

Sounds of Your City Tutorial

For this assignment I am going to help you with a tutorial that I have created.

First what you’re going to want to do is to hang out and record anything that sounds cool. If you’re in a city that is beneficial because the more sounds the better. Record using quicktime that way you can import your media into a mp.3 file.

Next you’re going to want to listen to everything and make sure it sounds how you want. Edit out the things you don’t using audacity and add a few sounds of your own for dramatic effect.

After you’ve converted your file upload it to Soundcloud and label what you want to call it. Let people hear what you’ve created and hear their feedback. Have fun with this assignment!!!!

Sounds of…my home?!

This assignment said to record sounds around your city, job, etc,. but I thought my house worked pretty well. It’s NEVER quiet. EVER. This is about 11 seconds of what its like just sitting at my kitchen table at home. TV on pretty loud, dog barking outside, sister talking to her boyfriend on the phone. Sometimes, I really wish it was dead silent!!

I used Audacity for this assignment and waited till my sister was on the phone because that’s the normalcy around here.

Sounds of Mad Max

Hello everybody! For my last assignment of the week I chose the ¡Sounds Of Your City! Assignment. In this assignment I was tasked with recording different sounds I hear throughout the day. I then would take these sounds and overlay them on background music. Instead of recording sounds I hear everyday, I decided to take sounds from the Mad Max (1979) trailer. I chose to use the Mad Max trailer for this assignment because I have been thinking about that movie a lot since I watched it last week.

Below is my assignment.

Behind the Process

To begin this assignment, I downloaded the Mad Max (1979) trailer. I then opened it in Audacity and cut away all the narration. This left me with some good quotes and car sounds. I then went to the Free Music Archive from WFMU and found this amazing Lofi Hip Hop song called Soma by teeho x VYVCH. After discovering this track I tried to emulate the Lofi Hip Hop vibe. If you are unfamiliar with this genre of music check out this hilarious YouTube video. In Audacity, I shuffled the audio clips around and added some effects like changing the speed, adding reverb and fade in/out.

The difficult part of this assignment was the initial cutting away of the narration. Sometimes I got lost in the audio and had no idea what I was cutting. This confusion forced me to learn the keystrokes for zooming in and out on Audacity so I could cut things easier. Another thing I found difficult was trying to add some story element. I was working with really a random assortment of clips. So, I found it challenging to link these together into a working story.

In this assignment, I found it easy to change the amplification and bring out the dialogue. Moreover, I think that my attention the dialogue and trying to emphasize it was something I did well. On the other hand, something I want to improve was distorting the dialogue. Even though I want to draw attention to the dialogue, in order for it to fit into the Lofi hip hop genre, it needs to have more distortion and reverb. I tried to apply these effects, but I didn’t do it very well as it wasn’t noticeable.

In general, I liked this assignment because I got to think creatively in my use of audio and music. If I had a choice I would do this assignment again, but actually record audio of my surroundings and not cop out by using a trailer.

Thanks y’all for reading. I’ll catch you on the flipside.

¡Sounds of your city!

Record glimpses of different sounds you hear throughout the day, at university, your job, or your city. Compile as many sounds as you would like (ideally in 10 second burst), this makes it easier for editing, chopping, and creating. Then, lay the sounds on some background music you borrow or create yourself, if you borrow the music make sure to give credit. Use audio editing software like Audacity or Logic and share the assignment through Sound Cloud or other medium. Lastly, have patience and have fun with this. If you choose this assignment, please share!
