Let the Dog In (Sound Story)

Here is a sound story that I created in Audacity using sounds I downloaded from Freesound.org.

After searching through a bunch of sounds trying to figure out what I wanted to make my sound story about, I ran across all the dog related noises and I decided to recreate the simple moment of letting a dog inside. It was a bit time consuming to sift through all the sounds available for dog barks. Other sounds were simpler to pick out, like a door opening or closing. I got the clip of rain outside a house from a longer sound recording.

I’m not sure if all the different dog noises sound like they come from the same dog as the clips were from different dogs and not all dogs sound the same, even when they’re shaking off water or running around a house. Hopefully I conveyed the story well enough though.

Sound Effect Scary Story

So, the first audio assignment I decided to do is the sound effect story. Essentially the task is to tell a story using all sound effects, and I chose to do a scary story. To accomplish this I used Audacity to edit and arrange the audio clips that I had. And I obtained those audio clips from freesound.org. It was pretty simple actually, I really just had to think of a story line, then try and find sound effects, that weren’t too cheesy, that correlated with my story. So here it is I hope you enjoy.

Til next time peeps.

Here was my first attempt at creating a sound story. If you can guess the sounds, give yourself a pat on the back! Creating this was much different than anything I have ever made before. I have not had a proper tutorial on Audacity, but this was attempt #1. Finding sounds was rather fun on free sounds! I began by looking for the most persistent, background noises then built up from there. I am curious to know how to move sound to later parts of the track though. That will probably useful for future events.

Let me know what you think!

Sound Effects Story

I really enjoyed doing this assignment, especially now that I knew how to use Audacity. The process of creating the entire story was very easy and simple using Audacity. The challenging part was trying to figure out what I wanted to tell my story about and trying to find the sound effects that what I wanted to use. Having difficulty brought me back to Idra’s point of view about storytelling. You must spend as much time of thinking about story as you do producing.

I decided to tell a story of me getting ready in the morning before I go to class. I thought it would be a good story to tell that was simple, but I would also be able to use a lot of different sounds.  I found all of my sounds using Freesounds.org, for the most part they were easy to find, however I did have to search for some of them for some time such as the “shower” sound effect. This assignment really showed me what audio can do and how effective it can be to telling stories, without using images.

Sound effect story

My sound effect story is kind of personal because it relates to my family business. It also did not hurt that I had a slight grasp on working with audio at this point.

I chose to do my story on an ice cream truck because my family actually owns an ice cream business. This is the process I usually go through when I am driving an ice cream truck. The sound effects that I used were the starting of the car, the ice cream truck music, the sound of a cash register, and children giggling, which all tell the story perfectly. Below I have listed the specific sound effects that I used. They are under the actual clip.

For this project I also used a mix of Garage Band and Freesound.org.

 Clips from Freesound.org I used:

Ice Cream Truck

Sound Effect Story: Caught In the Rain

For my sound effect story, I decided to narrate the process of someone getting caught in the rain. I was listening to RainyMood when I was reading the project description, and the idea hit me- make a rain story!

While poking around at some of my classmates’ projects, I definitely got a feel for how the story was supposed to sound. With that in mind, I went to FreeSound.com and went searching.

Compiling the audio story was simple enough: the tracks were all pretty short (except for the thunder) and the program is rather intuitive. The most difficult aspect of the project for me was finding a way to organically cut off the sound- as it currently is, the sound sort of just abruptly ends and I don’t think it sounds very smooth.

I was also shocked by how little time this project took. I worked on it for maybe 1/2 an hour, 45 minutes at the most, and I was expecting it to take a lot more time. Instead of using Audacity, I decided to use Garageband, and it can be pretty intuitive.

The audio clips I used while making this are: running surface, door slam, steady rain, dry thunder, and walking on pavement.
