An 80s Tragedy

This assignment is called Sound Effects Story where you must create a story only using sound effects. So, I decided to create a tragedy set in the 80s to go along with the 80s theme. I got most of my sound effects from BBC Sound Effects, but there was one other I needed that I got from Orange Free Sounds royalty-free. Then, I edited, sorted, and laid out my sound effects using Audacity to create my story. I did not face any difficulties with this. However, I enjoyed this assignment very much. Overall, it really made me think outside of the box and helped me to appreciate audio story telling evermore, and I appreciate that. Listen to my story below and tell me what you think.

A tragic story set in the 80s made of only sound effects. Enjoy!

I made this on TikTok because the Audicty would not download onto my computer. I got the sounds off of Freesounds.com and then I uploaded it onto youtube.

A Knight’s Tale

The assignment, Sound Effects Story, was one of my favorites for this week. It was so fun to create a whole story without any dialogue or visuals.

To accomplish this, I first downloaded sound effects off of the website, Freesound.  This website is filled with user-generated sound effects that all fall under free use. used Audacity.  Once I found the sounds I wanted to use, I uploaded them to audio editing software, Audacity.

After uploading them, I rearranged them in an order that would make the most sense.  When I was satisfied with the order, I exported the file from Audacity and saved it as an MP3.  I then uploaded it to my SoundCloud profile.

This assignment was really fun and challenging.  I loved being able to get creative and think of sounds that would trigger images in the brains of the listeners in order to convey my story.

sound effects story: travel day

A day of traveling: in 90 seconds, only through sound.

A Day in Sound Effects

I completed the “Sound Effects Story” prompt for my second audio assignment. For this assignment, I used 11 different sounds to put together a simple story in under 90 seconds!

The background of the story I created is about a student having a typical summer day. In this story, the student packs up their belongings and drive to the library. They walk inside and find a seat, and start their work right away. This includes going on the computer, reading, and writing. Then they head to the gym and back home.

Not sure how well it worked, but I still find bits of the audio choppy since I am still figuring out how to do transitions and such.

To create this sound effect story:

I found all of the sounds I wanted to use on freesound.org.

I went to Audacity and imported the audio files in order.

After I got the audio in order, I made sure to cut each audio and paste them at the end of the previous audio. This way, the different audios do not get mixed or layered. I also cut part of the sound effects that I don’t want to use.

Some of the audios are noticeably louder than others so I went to Effects – Amplify to adjust the volume.

After the volume and the length of the story is fixed, I went to the WavePad, so save the audio as an MP3 file.

Hopefully, the pieces that I make in the future are smoother and have a nicer flow, but as for now, here it is!

Sound Effects Story

As one of our first audio assignments this week we had to create a story under 90 seconds with nothing but audio!

Here is my short 21 second story below:

The short story is supposed to be a few people at a party when a drink is accidentally spilled, so the host goes to throw something that was spilled on into the washing machine. Though it may not seem like a very interesting topic, I thought it would be someting different to create!

As far as how I made the clip, I used several free sounds from https://freesound.org/ and imported them into my free downloaded version of Audacity. Once I had all of my sounds imported and moved to the right intervals, I merged them all into one track to be exported and saved as an mp3 file. Finally, I uploaded the mp3 file to SoundCloud and the rest is history!

As how I managed this assignment, it took me well into an hour to complete. I know these assignments are meant to only take 20 minutes or so, but I was not familiar was Audacity or how to import the audio files into my program. Another difficulty was trying to find suitable sounds to tell my story, and that took awhile to search for alone. Overall, watching many YouTube videos on how to use and work with Audacity seemed to help me the most. Hopefully I can spend less time on these audio assignments as I spend more time working with and learning how to use Audacity!

The One That Got Away

Tell a story using nothing but sound effects. There can be no verbal communication, only sound effects. Use at least five different sounds that you find online. The story can be no longer than 90 seconds. Another example (by a UMW student): http://ds106.us/wp-content/audio/audio_story.mp3

This short story could be relatable for some people. I used Garageband to create this short story using only sound effects!

I did not know what kind of short story would sound good using only sounds when I first started. Everything I could think of had some kind of dialogue or visuals that were needed in order for everything to make sense. I honestly couldn’t tell you how I came up with the idea of my final short story.

So, the story is meant to start out with someone running late and getting into their car. They start speeding, so a cop pulls them over. As the cop is walking over to the car and give them a ticket, cars speed by, along with police cars. The cop runs back to their patrol car and follows the other fellow cops.

I like how the story turned out. I could have definitely kept going, but I was reaching the time limit (90 seconds), so I decided to wrap it up. It was easy to find the sounds in the Apple loops, but it was harder to trim the sound clips to my liking.
