Help Make Me Famous!

This assignment worth 2 stars was one of the most fun assignments I’ve done so far. I first had to find a Craigslist ad that would be the basis of my audio recording. Browsing through the different ads posted on Craigslist was a very interesting process.  The ad I chose was about gaining success on YouTube.

The Process

I started by recording myself reading the text of the Craigslist advertisement.

Next, I went to Google to find jazzy music to add to it, since that’s what the assignment required.

jazz

Once I found the one I wanted to use, I saved it to my computer and imported it into Audacity. This is the jazz track I decided to use and to save it to my computer I used a YouTube-MP3 converter, found here.

Adding in the second audio file created another layer so I muted the first one so I could edit the background track by itself. I changed the Gain to -36dB, which made it softer so that the voice recording audio could still be heard over it.

I played around with some of the effects for the background track and decided to have the beginning of it fade in. After that I used the time shift tool to move to audio recording so that it was at the end of the faded out portion of jazz. The final step was to cut out the rest of the jazz music since it would have made the rest of the track just music with no talking.

After that I just had to upload to Soundcloud and it was done.

–Gecko For Your Soul~?–

So this was a fun assignment! XD

This Audio Assignment Bank project is titled “Beat Craig’s List” (2 stars). I had to take an add on Craig’s List and say it in a smooth jazzy way. I got the background music off of Soundcloud and its called Lover’s Dance. I used AVS audio editor to edit!

Those out there looking for a Leppard Gecko… this ones for you….

Craigslist Beat Poet Haikus

2 stars

For the remainder of my audio assignment stars, I did the Beat Craigslist assignment, where we read a Craigslist ad that has interesting wording, and then record it like a beat poem.

I love Craigslist. The majority of furniture in my house was obtained from the free section of Craigslist. You could say I’m a Craigslist connoisseur. Sometimes you come across hysterical things on the site, which why this assignment in particular really jumped out to me.

I perused Craigslist for a long time trying to find an ad that would work, but nothing really jumped out at me. I saw something about “chiguaguas,” but other than that nothing really looked good. So I decided to take the audio and twist it a little bit. Instead of treating it like beat poetry, I actually made it into beat poetry! I took three interesting ads and turned the subject mater into Haikus using the traditional 5-7-5 syllable pattern, and then recorded it. The three haikus I wrote were based off of the Haunted Gnome, the Air Hockey Table and the Watermelon Contest for Chickens.

Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 5.02.58 PMTo make it, I first recorded my voice saying the haikus, then went searching for a backbeat. I couldn’t find one I liked that felt appropriately jazzy, so I made one using two bass riffs from the Garageband loop database. It was definitely extremely easy to do- the hardest part was probably just finding the Craigslist ads I liked!

Beat Craig’s List

This assignment was to find an ad on Craig’s List and record it like a beat poem, adding jazz accents. This is the ad that I found about a broken tv:

I found some jazz accents on freesound.org and uploaded it into audacity. Then I recorded myself reading the ad. This is what it looks like in Audactiy:

I uploaded it to soundcloud, and here you have it!

All you can take Cactus- Audio Assignment 942

Trolling Craigslist is always fun, so the first audio assignment listed on Week 5′s page immediately jumped out at me.  Off I went to the local Craiglist “free” section and found this lovely post:

craigslist two

Sounds strange enough to me!!  Why anyone would want to take on such an awful job for “free cactus” is beyond me…but one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

I started to think of audio and a western theme came quickly to mind.  Cactus=desert=western movie, right?  (Never mind that these cacti live in the Walnut Grove area of the south, where ever that is).  I went to Soundcloud and searched “western”.  I selected this track:

The track itself is quite a bit longer than I needed and has several different parts.  I saved the file, played it on my computer and recorded the portion I liked using Audacity.  (Which is a very low-fi way of doing things, but it seemed to serve my purposes.)

Next I wrote out the Craigslist ad on paper with breaks for where I wanted to pause of emphasize a word.  After reading out loud a few times to get the hang of it, I pressed “record” and recorded my voice using Audacity.

I then got to work layering the two audio files and trying my best to improve the sound.  I started with the background music as the “base” file.  Next, I imported my voice and time delayed it by a second or two to allow the music to set the stage, as it were.  The music was a bit louder than what I needed though, so I used the envelope tool to lower the volume on the background music.

Next, I cut off the extra background music I didn’t need, but left a few seconds on the end, which I faded out after the voice recording was finished.  And voila! A spoken word masterpiece is born:

I was much quicker in loading Soundcloud files on this post- I didn’t have to consult help to remember how to do it correctly.  I did have to go back to the Audacity screencast to re-learn how to do pretty much everything except record.  Hopefully Audacity gets easier; I’m still not finding it to be very intuitive.  I did have some blips with Audacity in that I couldn’t import the .aup files I had saved–I had to export them to MP3 and then import them from MP3 format.  Not a big deal, but a moment of panic when I thought I couldn’t use the files I had made.

Twelve Pounds of Peanut Shells

I was able to squeak out another audio assignment today for the zone. While it isn’t Twilight Zone based, sometimes reading Craigslist can feel like its own alternate universe.

I chose to beat Craigslist because…well, because finding a ridiculous post was pretty fun. I made sure to stick local, so I humbly submit the following performance using material provided by my community:

This was pretty simple, as I stuck to GarageBand loops and samples. I recorded my voice right into the program and then added the radio voice effect to brighten the sound a little bit. It’s short, but it was fun.

If you don’t believe this post is real…I beg to differ.

Pure Poetry

The second audio assignment I chose this week was called Beat Craigs List, in which I was supposed to find a Craigslist ad and record it as though it were supposed to be a poem.  I after checking out some ads in the local page, boy did I find a good one.

I was never a fan of poetry in high school but after I got to college and was introduced to slam poetry, I began to love it.  That being said, I’ve NEVER been a good poet myself, and really wasn’t sure exactly what to do with the words in front of me.

How’d I do?

Beat Craigslist

——————————————————–

This assignment seemed so silly when I read it, I just HAD to do it.

I was right.

Silly.

I interpreted “beat poem” as like a Beatnik style poem of the late 50′s and 60′s.

So I looked up “Beatnik”

Wikipedia  Speaks of how “Joyce Johnson described how the stereotype was absorbed into American culture: “Beat Generation” sold books, sold black turtleneck sweaters and bongos, berets and dark glasses, sold a way of life that seemed like dangerous fun—thus to be either condemned or imitated. Suburban couples could have beatnik parties on Saturday nights and drink too much and fondle each others wives.”

Urban Dictionary has many colorful entries, this was my favorite, “Jazz hippies in berets.  Like…wow daddio. = Beatnik speak.”

————————————————-

This assignment was an exercise in patience–via audio.

How do you do this you ask?

1.  Take a deep breath

2.  Close the computer, walk away, go grab some Do-si-do’s and a big glass of milk.

3. Brainstorm. Walk around the house aimlessly, hoping you can pull this off.

4. GO!

5.  I had already downloaded audacity.  (free and easy to use.) {OH! I  downloaded the converter before too, you are gonna need it.* }

6.I spent approx. 626 minutes on FREESOUND listening to and deciding between all the cool jazzy trumpet, cello, bass, and drum selections.

7.-294. Using audacity try, sample, listen, do-over, try again, listen more, smack-head, walk-away, return, bang the desk, smile, listen some more, watch the tutorial over again, play with dogs, laugh at your own antics, relax, SAVE.

295.  Walk away.

296. Export to convert to an MP3 file. (*This is why you need the converter)

297. Upload to SoundCloud.

298. Sit back and enjoy!

299.  Keep practicing!

Beat Craig’s List

Craig’s List has some really interesting language choices in many of the ads, especially in the free section.  Find an ad that feels lyrical and odd enough to engage you.  Record it like a Beat poem. Add in jazz accents.  If you’re feeling really aggresive analyze your work as if it were intentional poetry.
