Mia’s Movie Night

The “You’re Invited!” assignment was to “Make an invitation for any event, whether it occur or not. Pick an event from a movie even! What does the invitation say about the event? Get creative.” I decided to tie my character Mia in with this assignment.

Mia doesn’t have a lot of time to spend on herself, since she is both a librarian and a secret agent. This results in her not being able to spend much time with her friends. However, this week she had a pretty light workload, so she decided to get together with some of her friends. She is throwing a movie and paint night at her house.

I used Canva to create the invitation. Previously, I have only used invitations with a template, which requires almost no work. This was the first time I’ve ever designed an invitation from scratch.

As I was designing, I tried to keep in mind what I wanted the invitation to say about the event. I used different design concepts such as minimalism, symbolism, and typography. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out! Maybe next time I need an invitation I will design it myself. You can see the final product below.

You’re Invited

For this assignment I created an invitation to a masquerade ball from the Alfred Hitchcock film, which is based on a book, Rebecca. I used a few different fonts, meant to be fancy but classy. Most of the fonts already came loaded onto Photoshop, but I did download some free use fonts. The invitation is meant to be an invitation given out to Rebecca’s friends before she mysteriously died, so I wanted to also include a Gothic and mysterious feel to the invitation.

You are invited to Noir Not the Father!

For part of my 10 stars of assignments for this week, I chose to do the you’re invited project. The assignment was to create an invitation to some sort of event. I saw this as a perfect opportunity to create a invitation letter to my character Jack from the Noir Not the Father radio show. I have been getting better at photo editing so I was exited to take on this project as something that for once wasn’t completely unfamiliar.

For this assignment, Melody Bay, from the influence of her father agreed to hold a showcase for the town of her recent summer paintings. She does not plan on attending the event but she is sending the invites to the guys from her radio show House of Noir(Jeff and Spence) because there is some good paintings of them she did from the show.

You’re invited- 3.5 stars.

I thought that this assignment was good for the story line of the radio show we did. Since it was a dinner party, I made the invitations for all the characters that were in our group. I did not want it to be a silly looking invitation, so I choose black with a color close to gold.

The shark at the bottom represents the person who sent the invitation, Mr. Shark.

Kelsey and I decided to do the design assignment You’re Invited! (worth 3.5 stars). The task: Creating invitations for different events says a lot about what is going to happen. Make an invitation for either any event, whether it occur or not. Pick an event from a movie even! What does the invitation say about the event? Get creative.

So as you all know, we had to incorporate our characters into all of our assignments this week. For this assignment, Blair’s eldest son Charles Jr, is getting married, and an invitation was sent to Stella. I was in charge of creating the invitation while Kelsey was in charge of creating the RSVP card.

To make the invitation, I looked up some templates on the internet. The one I liked the most was this: weddingchicks-download-1426191080

However, I didn’t like the bottom of it, so I ended up cropping it out, and creating my own bottom. I tried to find a blue that somewhat matched the blue of the heart balloon for the bottom. I already had downloaded these fonts for other assignments, and for fun, so they were easy to pull from. I also had to pick a name for the spouse-to-be of Blair’s son. I am a little bit obsessed with the Duggars from 19 Kids and Counting, and the Bates from Bringing Up Bates. Don’t ask why. It’s somewhat embarrassing, but whatever. I’ll admit it. One of the Bates girls is having a baby girl, and her name is Allie Jane. I thought it flowed well and I just picked a generic last name because she’s getting married and what does it matter anyway. So then I found a place in Michigan for them to get married, and voila.

This is my final creation:

Kelsey had to make the RSVP Card. This was the template:weddingchicks-download-1426191184

However, I thought it was ugly, so I used Gimp to erase all of the black words. I sent Kelsey This:

SO We had fun with this assignment, and if anyone else’s character wants to come to the wedding, there is an open bar and we have a few extra invites we can send out!

7.5 Stars down, 2.5 to go!

You’re like 7 years too late…but still send us the toaster

One of this week’s design assignments was called, “You’re Invited!” The goal was to, “Make an invitation for either any event, whether it occur or not. Pick an event from a movie even! What does the invitation say about the event? Get creative.”

I decided to make my invitations for Cecilia and James’s wedding. We had to have 6 stars dedicated to our nor character, so with this and the newspaper assignment I meet my quota.

I used a website called Wedding Paper Divas. They have various programs that allow you to create any type of save the date you want.

Just for us Ladies

tacky invitation

Victoire Absinthe put her suitcase down and collapsed on the bed. The morning sun was shining through the blinds of her hotel room on to the bed. The polyester blend quilt scratched her nose. The day was just beginning but for Victoire it felt like the end to a very long day. Groaning and rising from the bed, she cast a glance around her room. Everything the ad had promised her about the Chartreuse Paradise Hotel was right. There was a pool, and private bathrooms. You could see inside from the bed. The room wasn’t exactly “paradise” but it was nice enough. Most importantly, it was quiet. Victories footsteps were muffled in the green carpet as she crossed a few steps over to the dresser. She started putting her things away. Normally, she would’ve kept the bag packed, but she planned on staying here a spell.
“The place ain’t bad,” she thought to herself as she eased back into bed, preparing for a long nap, “Thank God it’s quiet. Not a bleeding neon sign for miles.”
There really hadn’t been. From the train station she had hailed a cab and rode the long 45 minutes in compatible silence with the old driver. He asked once why a pretty dame like her was traveling alone. Didn’t she have a man? Was he off to war? She had refused to speak. Sometimes when making a new identity, it was better to play it cool and let whoever it was make their own decisions about your past. Keeps things simple. There really weren’t any neon signs at all. The place was in the middle of nowhere, just a bunch of trees and some flowers trying to grow from the front lawn. She kind of liked it, and hated it at the same time. There was a small town a little ways off. She didn’t know what she expected from the place. All she wanted was something different.
Victoire rolled over. Shadows cast themselves on the floor. She looked at her watch. It was nearly 4. Groaning, she pushed herself into a sitting positing and rubbed her eyes. Lord, she felt like shit. Pulling herself together she ran her fingers through her hair and adjusted her lipstick in the mirror. Pulling on her shoes she noticed a crumpled letter that appeared to have been pushed under the door.
It was the stupidest invitation she had ever seen. Written in the overly elaborate script of some woman, with a kiss on the lower right corner. “Ladies Luncheon.” What the hell did that even mean? She turned it over. Nothing. There wasn’t even a date on the thing. She noticed the time- 1 pm.
“Well,” Victoire said to herself, smirking,  “looks like I dodged a bullet there.”
She crumpled the invite and threw it in the bin. Unbolting the door she wandered down the brightly lit hall. Gaudy wallpaper lined the hall, doors all locked. She reached the staircase and made her way down to the lobby. Her heels clicked on the cheap linoleum. She made her way to the front desk, wanting to ask where she could find something to eat. A curvy blonde looked up from her romance novel. She was just a pair of big blue eyes and big pink lips that formed a little “o” when she looked up, which broke into a big grin.
“Well, hey there sleeping beauty! You done slept the whole day away didn’t you?” Before Victoire could say anything, the blonde had whipped around the table and took her hands, and pulled her towards what she could only assume was the dining room, “Now don’t you worry dinner’s just about to start! Did you get my invitation?! It was supposed to be today but nobody came so I’m having it tomorrow you should most certainly come…” the blonde continued to yammer away as Victoire was pulled further into the hotel. Victoire groaned to herself. Damn. Damn it all.

For this assignment, I went ahead and tried to make the silliest and most poorly designed invitation I could. One that was at the same time overly decorated yet really not decorated at all. I think I succeeded. Like, the invitation isn’t bad looking, but it ain’t great, either.

I like what I’ve done so far in terms of Victoire’s story line… I’ve been trying to implement the assignments for the week in the story itself. I think I saw this done in a book, once, and I liked the idea. Why shouldn’t it correlate into a blog? I wanted this design assignment to reflect what was happening in my story, rather than just a random invitation. I’d like my posts to be somehow connected, and I’m experimenting with using the assignments as props to the story itself. Since this almost seems just like the beginnings of this, I’ll continue to see what happens.

If you have any ideas or comments on how I can improve or, really, anything at all, go ahead and leave a comment!

You’re Invited!

I related this assignment (3 points) to my noir character which was a creating invitation card to him. (John Brown)

invitation copy

This invitation card is from John Brown’s step-father to invited people to his wife, also John Brown’s mother, Mary  Brown. After John Brown got this invitation, he just threw away and decided to not to go. He just does not want to his family. He have been damaged from his family and his family members knew that he would not come but sent the invitation to grab a little bit of hope for coming.

To complete this assignment, I downloaded the invitation template and uploaded to Adobe Photoshop. And I wrote some mentioning of purpose of the invitation and place and time that party will occur. I saved the file as JEPG so I will able to upload it to my blog.
