The Big Hip Hop: Middle East Edition

I have been in awe of the protests that have taken place across the Middle East over the past few weeks.  I decided that a protest picture and a Ke$ha song would mesh beautifully.  While I know that the protest have been peacefully for the most part, pockets of chaos did break out.  Lyrics are from Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R”[1. Not a spelling error by me.], which is currently number 12[2. Really? 12th best song?] of Billboard’s Top 100.

My Heart Stops (The Big Hip Hop Design Project)

After a rather unsuccessful attempt at making a minimalist movie poster — if I finish it, I’ll definitely post it anyway — I decided to do a different design assignment. I started by just looking through all the pictures the Big Picture  had. I found a couple that I liked, but when I saw this one, I knew it was the one I wanted to use: it just made me laugh out loud just looking at it. Of course, I needed to find lyrics to put on the image, so I googled top 100 and looked through what people are listening to these days. It took awhile, but eventually I decided on what to use:

I think it turned out fairly well. I’m a little bit undecided about the font — I’ve looked through dafont and what I have on my computer, but I didn’t see much that would work better, but I’m sure there’s a better option. (If someone has a suggestion, let me know in the comments!) And I actually like the words and the image together; the meaning is totally different from what’s in the song, yet it definitely fits what I think I’d be feeling if I were that guy.

Then again, maybe not. If you’re the kind of person to face down riot police with nothing but a breadgun and a casually drooping cigarette, maybe it’s not so scary.

Design Assignment: The Big Hip Hop

For the design assignment, I chose to do The Big Hip Hop submitted by Tim Owens, which requires taking a photo from The Big Picture (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/) and overlaying it with text from a Top 100 song (http://www.metrolyrics.com/top100.html). This photo was taken at a protest in Tunisia. The lyrics are from the song “Lucky” by Jason Mraz. I was drawn to this picture…It’s powerful, and I love how surrounded by anger, a woman is holding up the peace sign. I chose these specific lyrics because this is what I imagine the woman holding up the peace sign is thinking. I used the website Picnik (http://www.picnik.com), a suggestion I received from Professor Groom, to add the text.

Design Assignment 12 brief

Take any photo from The Big Picture and overlay it with lyrics from a Top 100 song. Similar to The Big Caption project.

‘I wanna get dusted, I gotta get dusted baby’

For this design assignment I used a photo from The Big Picture’s coverage of the 2011 Dakar Rally and overlayed the lyrics from an old Schoolly D song I wanna get dusted. I wanted to contrast the strict and colloquial use of the word dust.

Design Assignment- The Big Hip Hop

For the design assignment, I chose to do The Big Hip Hop by Tim Owens, which requires taking a photo from The Big Picture website and overlaying it with text from a Top 100 song. This photo was taken at a protest in Tunisia. The lyrics are from the song Lucky by Jason Mraz. I was drawn to this picture…I love how surrounded by anger, a woman is holding up the symbol for peace. I wanted the lyrics and the format of the text to be bold, like this woman’s statement.

If there was ever a need for a sarcasm font…

Dear upstairs neighbors,

I really admire your love for music. I mean , almost every day I hear your oboe/clarinet playing, your stomping/dancing, and your off key singing of Katy Perry’s Firework. Especially at midnight. It’s awesome. Here is my gift to you.

It’s wake boarding santa with a flare and lyrics from your favorite song “Firework” by Katy Perry.

Sincerely, Megan

UPDATE: Thanks to thedailwh.at I found this. Thank goodness they don’t play the vuvuzela.

Why am I still up?

So, it’s almost 1. I have no classes tomorrow, but I do have to get up for work. There is no explanation for why I am up but here is a quick little something I made.

I saw one of the “Submit Your Assignment” things: The Big Hip Hop and decided to do it. The picture comes from here (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2010/09/oktoberfest_2010.html). The reason why I picked it? I think lederhosen are hilarious. Also, now I realize that the song that I got the lyrics from (Ke$ha’s We R Who We R) is the same as the example one. Whoops. Same song, different lyrics. Forgive me.
