Business and Cards

For my third collaborative character assignment I chose to do the “Create Your Own Business Card” assignment worth two points. I started this assignment by going to psprint.com and using one of their business card templates. This assignment was a little tricky to collaborate with Sebastian Crane. My inspiration might be a bit of a reach but I used a sleek design to represent his nature with the ladies. I uploaded the company logo I made for Spence’s company, The Highland Corporation, a few weeks ago for another assignment. Next I did a bit of research to find out Chicago’s area codes and zip codes to fill in the required boxes on the template. Here is the finished product.

Johnny Ain’t Messin Around

Lenny's Business Card

For the last assignment I collaborated with Jack Eaton on, we decided to do a business card. Our two characters have a really good story going and so I thought it would be fun to do a Lenny’s Hitman Service Business card. The business card was created in photoshop. We started with a 5×3 blank canvas and then used the paint bucket tool to make it black. We then pulled a typical noir photo from good and placed in on the page. I blended the edges of the picture to the black canvas to give it a better look. Then used the text tool on photoshop to add the name and the number.

Johnny Corner Pocket McCormick found this business card in an alley the night after he finished doing the talk show Inside Talking Lena Meyers. This was also the same night El Jota stole the love of his life, Lena Meyers from him. Johnny called Lenny’s Hitman Service in hopes that he can kill El Jota evidence free! Johnny Corner Pocket isn’t trying to take a charge!

The Sleuths’ Business Card

I had already completed the bad guy business card assignment, so I was inspired to create a business card for the Steadfast Sleuths as well. I adapted the Create Your Own Business Card assignment to fit this week’s objective of having all of the assignments relate to multiple noir106 characters. I incorporated all of the Steadfast Sleuths’ names into the business card as well as one of the lines from our radio show. Because they move around so often, The Sleuths usually give out the cards themselves and are found in the phone book or at the police station for contact. Compared to the villain card, I decided to use similar font in the magnifying glass, which I found in an online search, and used a more curvy and less aggressive font for the name of the PI group. The card was designed and edited in Photoshop and then uploaded to Flickr. The clean and simple design of the card is supposed to be a foil of Shannon Mills’ text-filled card, but the two still have a similar color scheme.

Sardic’s Business Card

This is for the Create Your Own Business Card design assignment.  The assignment itself was very straight forward, and left a lot of room to play around with.  It was the perfect thing to do for my noir character though, since he’s a practicing private detective.  So I designed the business card that he hands out to potential clients.  This is the very same card that Sardic gave to Ellen’s noir character, Alicia Bridgewater, in our DunNoirgeons and Dragons radio show.  I kept the design relatively simple.  The colors are black and white, a fitting pallet for the noir theme.

Do you think your man is cheating on you? Do you want to test it out to make sure he is being faithful and won’t fall for two extremely beautiful women? Well, we have the company for you. For a flat fee, we will make sure your man isn’t being unfaithful and if he is, then well… we’ll take care of the rest.

Above is our business card for the MaNOIRpulators business. To make this I used a template online which allows you to make a faux business card to preview. I used both my character and again, Kendall Parker’s character because we were the seducers in our radio show. I made up some facts for our business and used the logo that I made for our radio show as the logo for the card!

UGH. UGH. UGH. The other day, my boss asked me to go to a networking event for “DC political young professionals” so I could “make some connections before graduation” and I just cringed. I don’t like hearing that word anymore. He also mentioned that I should make business cards. I sat down this weekend with a “I WILL DO THIS” attitude once I also realized that it was an assignment I could do. 2 things. 1) THIS WAS SO HARD BECAUSE I AM SO PICKY 2) POLITICAL PEOPLE ARE SO BORING. WHAT KIND OF INDUSTRY AM I GOING INTO.

Anyways, above you see my work from the assignment (2 stars). And here is how it went down. I went on vistaprint, because I was actually thinking about doing this. And I didn’t see anything that I liked. From there I was like “okay, mariah well you are young. you can be hip and in politics” wrong mariah, no you can’t. So I made this all colorful, knowing 100% that I can’t actually use it. It is also a little blurry. I looked into some designs on the internet and tried to figure out what I wanted people to walk away with after they met me. I figured my phone number, email and social media would be useful. I also have an online portfolio for my journalism stuff so that I was pretty easy to plug in. I found vectors of each icon, added some lines and color (look at that design reading working it’s magic) and decided on this. What do you think?

B

This is the Business Card assignment that is two points. I thought it would be fun to expand on my character’s universe. I chose to discuss the business that ultimately runs his life. They are called Aquia Maxius. I explain a little more about this in my word post.

Background:
The company is anonymous but is directly involved in the transportation of Lukas Jones to the past and to the present. In each area of time, they are responsible for sending him messages through any means. In his travels, he encounters them and they hand him their business card. Despite the message, he immediately calls them receiving no answer but later receiving a call back. They are very stealthy in that their tracks are almost never seen. They are the group that leads Lukas on his journey through NYC in 1947 and to new people he didn’t expect to meet. Their slogan is “We are here for you” as they are always following.

How I made it:

After I while of navigating through Photoshop, I decided to go somewhere else. I had a lot of trouble and needed to find something else to work with. I chose the online image editor fotoflexer.com. It was easy to use and had a lot of cool stuff. The background picture was one I found online. It was a free business card template that I cropped the wording out in Photoshop. I took the font, Ethnocentric and wrote the name of the company, their slogan and their phone number. I didn’t want to put any random number from my head in case it might be someone’s actual number so I went with the number six. I used an eye from the photo section of the website to add creepiness to the card. I think it is very simple but it turned out well.

Shirley is Bringing in the Business

For one of my week five assignments, I chose to do the assignment, Create Your Own Business Card that was submitted by Lauren Brumfield.

The assignment is to,” create your own business card to advertise who you are.” The assignment is worth 2 points.

I picked this assignment because I thought it would be fun to give my character dossier, Shirley Mayfield her own business card. I think that it will definitely make her seem more professional since she took over the department store after her father’s death.

I used VistaPrint to create the business card. I wanted something sleek but stylish at the same time. I also wanted to keep things simple because if there is too much going on it’s more difficult to read. I think that I ended up designing a very “clean” business card. It has all of the necessary aspects, but it’s not “too much” in my opinion.

Shirley will definitely be bringing in the business with these sleek business cards ;)

I really enjoyed completing this assignment because I really enjoy bringing Shirley to life! It really makes her seem real. I also liked getting a chance to play around with business cards because that is something that I will probably need in the future.

James… Julia James

As part of the twelve stars required for design assignments this week, six needed to be devoted to our noir characters. Considering the nature and profession of my character, “Jewel”, the “Create your own business card” assignment was ideal. The assignment states: We’re reaching a time in our lives where where professionalism is key. Use photoshop to … Continue reading James… Julia James

Need a Writer?

Call Donnie. Donnie's Card

I made this business card out of Bristol Board measured to Vignelli’s specifications, A8 card size of 52 x 74mm.  I used a calligraphy pen for the simple design of his “handwritten” signature accompanied by an ink well and calligraphy pen.

I’ve had my calligraphy pen sitting around for a long while, up on the shelf over my desk, but never really messed around with it much since opening it and doodling a little bit in a sketch pad. Now, my desk calendar has turned into a gigantic doodling board, and I can’t stop drawing.

I wrote a phone number in the top left corner with the San Francisco area code.  I wrote a real phone number and then went back over it with my pen to obscure it a bit and make it look more like the card had just been wet. I used an eraser on all of my writing, next, to try to give it some wear, as well.

The ink splotch in the center is intentional. I tried to get a thumbprint sized mark near the center to make it look like Donnie had attempted to hand it out already. Then I drew on my fingers with ink and rubbed them around the card, and decided I should add a little border, so I did that with a straight edge.

I had a bit of fun with this assignment, and feel like the once-white-space-now-a-splotch in the center really ties the room together…
