When You Need to Be Motivated to Be Un-Motivated

Because of my dry humor, I did not hesitate to do the Contradiction Creation design assignment. I love motivational quotes just as much as the next person, but sometimes they can be a little (no–very) cheesy, and what better to destroy all this positivity than with a dash of pessimistic realism?

At first, I wanted to do something related to “fitspiration,” but when I saw this picture of a bird flying into the horizon, I changed directions and just scrolled through un-motivational quotes. I decided on this one because, if you think about it, it’s very true.

Contradiction Creation

For my next assignment bank for this week, I chose to do one from the design assignments. I chose one where I had to find an inspirational background and then put an anti-motivational quote on top of it. I chose this one because honestly, I thought it was super funny. I picked a 80s themed background (to keep with the 80s theme of the class) and then chose a quote that I laughed at the most.

I hope you are un-motived after reading this post ?

Super motivational

So for this anti-motivational poster design assignment I created an 80’s themed poster. For the background I used a vague scifi pink and purple plane. These are such common backgrounds for posters from the 80’s I feel like they’re used entirely as jokes now.

What I liked about this assignment though is that it was counter-motivational which was so funny to make.

I used Pic Collage for the background and font.

For 2 and 1/2 stars I chose to create a short gif! I love gifs and their everyday use.

The one I chose was inspired by the image on the direction sheet.

Create some sort of graphic. Design the overall graphic to convey some sort of feeling or theme, but then have text saying something completely contradictory to the theme or feeling. Sort of like one of those old anti-motivational posters, but with more design than a black box with a white frame.

This is the original link to the assignment. This assignment is worth 2 1/2 stars. I decided to add the 80s theme within this assignment. This assignment asked for me to create the graphic to convey a theme and the text convey the complete opposite. Obviously the graphics convey the 80s theme with the image of Micheal Jackson, the girl with the big hair, and the radio box and the text that reads “THE 2000’s” conveys modern day. If you look closely at the radio box, I added a small image of Micheal Jackson dancing in the speaker. I thought this could be a cool design to add to this graphic for the viewer to see if they saw it or not. I enjoyed creating this graphic and I used Canva to create this project.

You Hate Dogs?!?

I chose a picture of my dog and I and made a contradiction. I obviously love dogs, and Duke definitely loves me.

UNmotivated

You see them everywhere.  Photos of beautiful landscapes or happy people cover with sayings like “Dream Big” and “Keep Calm and Carry On”  or this:

Motivational posters are supposed to give you a feeling of hope and inspire you to do great things.  Well, maybe I don’t want to KEEP CALM!  Sometimes these posters are just annoying!  How nice would it be to one day see TRUE statements everywhere you look?  Something like, “Exercise sucks!”  That is why I chose to do this assignmentIt asked us to create an image and put a contradictory statement on top.   Basically, I created an anti-motivational poster.

To do this, I used my new favorite app on my iPad, Canva (there is also a desktop version).  I chose Canva because it offers several FREE design templates for posters and a TON of copyright free images.  I followed these steps to create my poster and have included screenshots.  After logging into my account, I clicked on the link on POSTER under the Create a New Design tab.  I found the layout I liked then searched for the best positive photo I could find.  I drug the photo into the template, and adjusted the size to fit.

Then I thought of the worst thing to tell a group of determined teen runners and inserted into the text box in the template.  I used a cheery font and placed the caption just below center of the photo.  By doing this, more of the facial expressions and body language is visible.  This makes the caption seem even more contradictory.

Just Stay Inside

Create some sort of graphic. Design the overall graphic to convey some sort of feeling or theme, but then have text saying something completely contradictory to the theme or feeling. Sort of like one of those old anti-motivational posters, but with more design than a black box with a white frame.

Nature isn’t worth your time. Hiking? It’s a scam, just stay inside.

This design may look like it could be a motivational poster, but once you read the quote, you may be left confused. Why is the poster telling you to stay inside when there are two people clearly having a great time outside? It may seem to be contradicting itself, and it is!

For this design, I had to find the right picture and right quote along with it to send these mixed signals. It took me a long time to find the right font to use (as always). I thought I had my heart set on a cursive font, but then as soon as I saw this font, I knew it would be perfect. It gives the kind of outside in nature vibes that fit well with the picture of people hiking. I was a little worried that the white font would be difficult to read, but after trying many, many other colors, I decided that white is the best choice. I also messed around with the thickness of the border as well. At first the border was thicker, but then I decided that it made the white text look weird. I added a thinner border because it made the design look more realistic as a motivational quote picture.

The directions for this assignment:

“Create some sort of graphic. Design the overall graphic to convey some sort of feeling or theme, but then have text saying something completely contradictory to the theme or feeling. Sort of like one of those old anti-motivational posters, but with more design than a black box with a white frame.”

For this project, I went straight to Canva! I found a background image of the sun shining through blades of grass, and the overall feel of the background image is peaceful and typical of the background of an inspirational image. In order to find this image, I typed in “sunrise.” The image came preset with the white outline of a diamond, which gave me just enough space to add my text, which reads, “Today is the worst.” I felt like this statement perfectly contradicted the pretty image in the background.

This was a really fun and quick project to do. I enjoy any project that allows me to be creative and use Canva. I think Canva is such a helpful tool to create images and give it a “clean cut” look.

Un-Motivational Poster

This assignment was to create an un-motivational poster! I thought it would be funny if I did two people who are obviously having a good time and talking/laughing, and then used a sunny background color. I coupled that with the phrase “please don’t talk to me” because my office has it as their “motto” of the week. Half serious and half as a joke. I made this with a stock image labeled for reuse, and Canva.

This assignment was the Everyone is the Worst assignment worth 2.5 stars.
