The Joy of Painting Foundation

I’ve always been one to seek opportunities to help others and make a difference where I can, while my family collectively often donates to charities in hopes of seeing some real change in our world. Because of this, when seeing this prompt I knew I had to pick it up and make something with it. I recently watched a YouTube video by a guy that goes by the name Ten Hundred that showed the process of him and some subscribers painting a huge mural on the side of a school using only leather paint, typically used on shoes and handbags. He did this so that he could land a sponsorship from a company that makes leather paint, requesting that the company sponsors the mural painting event rather than his channel. The company loved the idea, sent a lot of paint, and also sent a ton of pairs of shoes to set up a workshop for the underprivileged kids at said school to paint their own shoes. This was extremely heartwarming and something that I won’t forget. The video is embedded below. If you have the time to watch it (about 12 minutes or so), I highly recommend doing so.

Because this has been on my mind, as well as the fact that we’re actively covering design and art, I figured I would create an imaginary charity that helps bring art to underprivileged kids. In Ten Hundred’s video, he mentions that a lot of schools that lack funding have to cut art programs entirely. Though this charity is made up, I’m sure something like this could make a great impact on a lot of young people. Incorporating Bob Ross into the idea also just made total sense, so I decided to call the organization “The Joy of Painting Foundation.” It has a good ring to it, a good message, and reflects an artist that was so inspiring to countless everyday folks.

I had some fun making this, choosing a design that shows a lot of little, intricate details that bring it all together. The silhouette of Bob’s face in the middle works extremely well, in my opinion, as anyone who knows of Bob Ross would know that it’s supposed to represent him. I also felt that these colors worked together, representing a warm pallet for the piece. In terms of the number at the bottom, I translated the letters in “Yay Bob Ross” over to numbers by looking at my the keypad on my phone app. It’s a little Easter egg that adds a bit of playfulness to the ad if you notice it.

Giving Back

Assignment #1

For this assignment I chose to make a poster for a charity, real or made up, to inform the public. I chose the charity “Fairy Godmother Project”, which is a real charity based in Fredericksburg. I wanted to make a poster for a real charity that was close to Mary Washington and had something to do with children. I found this one that really stuck out to me because it helps parents and children who have been given cancer diagnosis. I used the website canva to make this poster and all the information on the poster came from “The Fairy Godmother Project” website.

#TeamSeas

The prompt

#TeamSeas

I’ve always been passionate about charities and ocean pollution in particular, so I was drawn to this prompt. I chose #TeamSeas because it was so popular for a little while. I wanted to remind people that it is still very much active. You can still donate.

The main audience of this poster is already familiar with #TeamSeas, so it was more important to have an eye-catching poster than something covered in information. I chose a simple font that would be easy to read. The image is from Pexels. I chose it because it showed the human element of the trash cleanup rather than just the problem like many of the other images showed. I compiled it all on Canva.

Creating a Charity Ad…

This assignment caught my attention because I come from a family who works for a few non-profit organizations and thought that creating a charity ad would be fun. I decided to go with Walk To End Alzheimer’s because my Grandpa recently passed from Alzheimer’s. I enjoy working with this charity to bring awareness to the disease and fight for a cure. To make this ad, I used the logos directly from the charity and added a photo explaining the effect that Alzheimer’s has on the body because I felt like including this aspect would actually help people understand better what the charity was. I edited the images together and came up with this!

donate for parkinson’s research!

Create an ad to inform people about a charity and encourage them to donate.

https://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/charity-ad/

For this assignment, I created an ad for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. I used Canva, which I just learned how to use!

I liked this background template that they had, so I used that, and imported the logo for the charity. I loved this assignment! Go donate!

In The Arms of An Angel

For this assignment I was able to create once again on canva, the free and convenient site that I have now been using to create my posters.

I have always cared for animals and it breaks my heart when they are left homeless or not adopted. Thus, I created my charity assignment for the SPCA.

I chose cats as my visual center piece as it reminds me when I adopted my cats, as they were the last of their litter (brother and sister), and nobody wanted them, so I adopted them both.

I also chose to include a cloudy background which I feel resonates with heaven or angels. I also chose a quote that characterizes most with pathos, as I felt every time I would watch an SPCA commercial on TV, I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. It is a simplistic yet emotional poster.

Donate Today!

Click here for the original assignment!

For this assignment, I decided to make a flyer that supports a local blood drive coming up. I try to donate blood as often as I can and always feel like I am helping someone when I do. If you have not donated blood before Mary Washington has a blood drive every month! This month it will be in the digital auditorium on 2/26/20.

This flyer was made using Canva.

Hope to see everyone there!

e3kids Charity Ad Assignment:

e3kids is a non-profit organization that I have been working very closely with for about a year now. They help equip, empower, and educate kids and families in Kenya and Guatemala. Since thier founding they have built schools, housing, water wells, and even libraries. e3kids is a missionary organization that improves these families’ everyday lives, but also teaches them about God’s word. I have been interning with the wonderful organization for about a year now and have even traveled with them to Guatemala to do photo journalism for the team we sent there.

As soon as I saw the option to create a charity ad I knew I had to do it with e3kids in mind. The ad is about a bracelet making event that they hold in various locations all over the Fredericksburg area. In Kenya we buy these colorful beads that are made out of newspaper and painted from local vendors and string them into bracelets. We then turn and sell them to give the proceeds directly back to the people in Kenya that we serve.

To make this advertisement for this particular event I used photoshop along with the e3kids international logo (in the middle) to create an eye pleasing ad that would hopefully invite people to come and support by making – or even buying a bracelet. I added the large font at the top and bottom to catch attention so anybody who walks by would be intrigued by what this event is. Lastly, the colorful triangles and lines on the edge were just shapes that I created in photoshop and color matched to the original logo to created more fun and creative boarder.

Week 5: Assignment Bank

I Can’t Eat This
Body image is a very serious topic because people can’t enjoy their food or life because they are always worried about what to eat or what people think about them eating something like a bacon cheeseburger. I chose to show someone holding up a sad face because its not just one sided, anybody that feels ashamed of something involving food doesn’t want to show it.
Let’s bring back the 80’s and stay there!!!!
Donate at your local library to get that much closer to going back. I had some fun with this poster because I think the “Back To The Future” series is really good and it tied in well with wanting to go back the 80’s like our theme.
Lost Hat
Any news on where my apocalypse hat is please call the number on the poster. The hat is my only chance at survival. I wanted to keep this lost hat poster simple because if it was an actual apocalypse nobody would want to read a whole paragraph, they would just want to get straight to the point.
Greetings from the Big Apple
I personally love visiting New York City because there’s so much going on and there’s a bunch of cool hidden restaurants you can find and go to.

Hanover Humane Society.

This is the original assignment link. This assignment was worth 3 1/2 stars. I decided to create a poster for the Hanover Humane Society that is located in Ashland, VA. I have been there myself and I really appreciate this place and what is stands for. I chose to create this poster on Canva and used photos and images of the dogs and cats from the internet. I think the background used is the perspective of a poster on a board. If you want to visit this amazing place visit the link provided on the poster below. It will give you the tour about the place and what you can do to help out!
