A purely unapologetic piece of DS106 branding

Build for DS106

Cogdog’s DS106 propaganda post was taken to task by Stephen Downes for “over-branding” ds106. Is the DS106 to much hype? Not real enough? Adrift in a cult of personality?

F****THAT #4LIFE. As Martha mentioned in her comment on Cogdog’s post, there’s nothing but love out there in ds106. No hating on someone for not being cool enough, not hanging out and making enough art dammit! Every time you come back it’s, “oh my god, we missed you, so glad to see you again.” Like old friends, no apologies necessary.

And isn’t that what so much of the MOOC attitude is supposed to be about anyway? Build your network of learners, your community with people you care about, share interests with? On your own time and terms because when you truly commit and communicate, that’s when the real learning happens?

And if the ds106 learning celebration looks a little too raucous for your taste, that’s cool it just might not be for you.

Shop! It’s the American Way

Here’s a Canadian propaganda poster from WWII that I borrowed to reflect my sentiments about mainstream America’s favorite pastime:

Again, I used Gimp, but I seem to be getting the hang of it.  It took only a few minutes!

Time to let out your inner Big Brother (or Sister)!

DS 106 ers: You Create as You're Told!

Time to let out your inner Big Brother! Create a propaganda poster for ds106. Use your photo editing software of choice and write a message to inspire your fellow DS 106ers.

  • I did a Google image search for “propaganda posters,” and found this cutie.
  • I erased the original text in Photoshop with the eraser tool, and
  • I used the text box to add my own inspirational message.

However, here is the original, which I think is pretty funny, especially as an English teacher with a warped sense of humor. I’m sure my students sometimes think this about their writing instructors.

Women Wanted for ds106

DS106 Propaganda Poster:

ds106 women wanted poster

I was scanning the Design Assignments bank looking for my next assignment, and when I saw this one I got reeeeeeally excited.

I love old propaganda posters from World War II era, so the DS106 Propaganda Poster assignment was practically made for me. Huge thanks to the guy who submitted it!!

So I went to compfight to browse through the creative commons propaganda posters until I found one I liked. I really wanted to use one that said “When you ride alone, you ride with Hitler,” but I couldn’t figure out how to apply that to ds106. Here’s the one I chose:

Women Wanted as Ambulance Drivers

Then I was curious about the meaning behind the poster – women wanted for driving ambulances? – so I did a little research. It turns out that this particular poster was produced in Great Britain during World War II by the the organization Air Raid Precautions.

Anyway, back to the design…for eliminating the words, I referred to Mr. Levine’s useful blog post that was for a different assignment, but was done in a similar fashion. It seems simple and obvious to do, but I didn’t even think to do this until I read his post. So to erase the existing words, I just copied a piece of the background that didn’t have writing on it, and pasted it over the words I didn’t want. So I eliminated “As ambulance drivers,” “council,” “services,” and “defence.” In their place I wrote “For ds106 design,” “school,” “classes,” and “duty.” I also replaced the writing on the red car that said “Ambulance” with “DS106.”

The hardest part was finding a font that closely matched the poster. I ended up using the Helvetica Neue Heavy Condensed font, and used the color picker to get a color that matched the original words. I didn’t have as much success with this when I changed around the bottom part where it said “Civil Defence,” because that was a different font completely. I changed it to say “Civil Duty,” and though the font doesn’t match as well, it is a pretty small part of the poster so I think it’s okay.

So here’s your motivation, get out there and design!

I WANT YOU TO MAKE ART (damnit)

It’s hard to resist a good ds106 assignment submitted by a student- such as the ds106 Propaganda Posters by Daniel Zimmerman (who is taking zero prisoners in this class)

Time to let out your inner Big Brother! Create a propaganda poster for ds106. Use your photo editing software of choice and write a message to inspire your fellow ds106ers. For example, I took a WW2 poster about increasing ammunition production, and turned it into a poster promoting tweeting.

I found a bunch by searching Google Images on “vintage posters” and was drawn in by the superhero look of a set of Kick Ass Posters from Affein Heim Theaters

This was some quick Photoshopping; it will take me longer to describe then to do it. I used Popular Std font to put the “1 0 6″ on the head- each a separate layer so I could rotate. For the 6, I converted to bitmap, and did a selection on the background of the poster layer to get a selection I could subtract from the 6.

To change the face, I made a new layer, did a multiple polygon selection of the face opening, and did Edit -> Special -> Paste Into to insert a Face of Groom. I fiddle a bunch with transform, rotate, distort- it is stil not optimal, but at some point you move on…

For the bottom text, I just filled the space of the words with clones of the paper background (moving the text wider apart to slip in the “ds106″. For the MAKE ART text, I used the Popular Std font again, and applied the Craquelure Texture filter to give the letters some gritty. I converted it to bitmap, and then selected all (command A) and nudged it up and down with the arrow to select everything, and used a Stroke at outline the letters.

This assignment can be easy or simple, but the appeal is trying to design something in the motif of these old posters.

Design Assignment

This assignment hit me in the head, in much the same way that a brick falling would, on the way back to my apartment after class tonight. For some odd reason my mind wandered to the posters I had seen around the Quarter Deck at my last command; they were “modern” propaganda posters. “Lose Tweets [...]
