Sequels

Original Assignment (3 stars)

Taken-2-Poster-Bowtied

Sometimes sequels can be a hit or miss in the film industry. For this assignment, I found a movie poster on Google for the film Taken 2. I enjoyed the first one, but the second one, not so much. Now I hear they are possibly making a third one (I hope not, let it rest). Anyhow, I threw the image in Photoshop to clean up the text using the clone tool. Because all of the original text was in the black background, it made the process that much easier. I cloned the same black color used in the poster, and easily swiped away the text with ease. Now it was time for me to put my twist on it. The image of Liam Neeson here gave me the idea to express the movie from his point of view (he doesn’t look thrilled). I thought to myself, it looks like he doesn’t even want to do the sequel, or was forced to do so.

For the process, there were 5 layers total. One for the main image, three for text, and one for the movie rating icon I added. I only used one effect (inner shadow), which was applied on the main title text. Other than that, completing this assignment was a breeze. It’s all a matter of placing each layer appropriately so that it looks legit. Take a look at the finished product below.

The Truth Behind Olympus Has Fallen! (3 Stars)

For this assignment, we were to take a movie poster and edit it to tell the real truth about the movie. The process of this was very simple and fun. The tough part was picking a movie and deciding what to say about the movie. After thinking about it for a couple minutes I knew exactly what movie I wanted to do. Once I knew what movie I chose I found a movie poster through Google. After that I dragged the photo into an app called Photo Eraser, I erased the title of the movie from the poster. After that, I took that image and put it in another app called Fotor. Through this app, I added a text box into the movie poster and was able to add my own title, to reveal the truth about the movie.

A couple years ago I took my little sister to the movie theater to see White House Down. There was only one reason to see the movie, and his name was Channing Tatum. For me the movie was okay, but my sister loved it. A couple months later I watched Olympus Has Fallen, and I thought that movie was great! The two movies have very similar plots, but Olympus Has Fallen was much more intense and action-packed. So when this assignment came up I knew what movie poster I wanted to use and the truth I wanted to reveal about the movie.

2011: The Year of Friends With Benefits Movies

I did the Design Assignment Truthful Movie Poster, which is worth 3 stars. In order to make this poster I took the Friends With Benefits poster and cut it out on top of a still from No Strings Attached using Pixlr. I used the magic wand tool to eliminate the background of the Friends With Benefits poster and then simply moved Justin and Mila onto the still with Natalie and Ashton. Next, I covered up the “Friends with Benefits” with the rectangle tool. Then, on a new transparent layer, I wrote out my text, rasterized it, and rotated it. Lastly, I moved the text over to my movie poster and added it onto the black rectangle, where the original movie title had been.

A little background of these two movies…in 2011, two movies came out dealing with the idea of “friends with benefits.” No Strings Attached came out first in January, and then Friends With Benefits came out in July. I remember seeing the trailer for Friends With Benefits  and thinking, “wait, didn’t they already do this.” However, in my opinion, (and according to IMDb)  Friends With Benefits is slightly better than No Strings Attached. Neither one of them are super amazing since they are the typical feel good, funny, romantic comedies, but nonetheless, Friends With Benefits is the better of the two.

Truthful Lego Movie Poster

This is either the second or third time I have used “The Lego Movie” for school work, which is strange because I thought the movie was okay. Any who I thought it would be appropriate to share the truthful side of this movie maybe before you go and see it, plus it was an easy target for manipulation. Here is the before poster:

And here is the after:LEGO MOVIE poster

The process was a little more tricky this time simply because I was using GIMP and not Photoshop. It most certainly would have been a lot easier using Photoshop because of the various blending tools I could use for the background where the white text once was, but it turned out just fine.

To get rid of the original text I used the color picker tool to match the color of the background. For those of you that don’t know about the color picker tool, it allows you to select a color that is already in a picture you have. So if you wanted to mimic the exact color of an object you would use this tool and it looks like this:

Screen Shot 2014-07-02 at 7.17.01 PM

After selecting the color of the background, I just used the paint brush to cover up the text and repeated the process around the firetruck ladder. Once all the text was gone I replaced it with my own text using the you guessed it the text tool!

It was a little tedious to get the color right around the firetruck and make the sky match the proper colors, but it was a fairly simple process. Plus I don’t give away to many spoilers unlike one person who would ruin “The Departed” if you have never seen it! Oh well I hope you guys enjoy my movie poster. Let me know if you have any questions!

Highly Illogical: The Movie

My friends and I are horror film buffs. We’ll see anything remotely tagged as horror…and we even love terrible syfy movies (if you feel the same I highly recommend Komono Vs Cobra. Hilariously bad vfx and acting and plot…). When one of our roommates raved about a french horror film ‘High Tension’ we rushed out to rent it. Before I get into my opinion, here’s my truthful movie poster for the film.

Highly Illogical Movie Poster

Yeah. There is NO WAY in a physically plausible universe that ANY of the events in this film could have occurred. It’s a violation of several laws of nature and physics. The only possible reason my roommate could have suggested this is the old say “Misery loves company.” He’s a jerk.

Technically, this is another exploration into GIMP. I’m enjoying it. This is a bit more complex than my last project. I cloned over the original titles, found a font that closely approximated it and typed in my new title. The titles are using a burn blending mode I felt this look matched the look of the poster nicely. Finally I adjusted the quote to more aptly match the truth of the film. It confused the crap out of me. The plot was so impossible it took me out of the movie. To say this movie sucked would be a compliment.

Design: 3 Stars. (That’s 16 total!)

I added text to this movie poster in GIMP.  Truthful movie poster assignment found here.

Truthful Movie Poster: Zombieland

“Imagine if movie posters told the REAL story about the fillm they’re advertising. Redesign an existing movie poster by changing the text/images to tell us the real story.”

zombieland

There has to be something to said about the success of Jesse Eisenberg because of Michael Cera’s early work. lol Haters gonna hate. These two actors play the same character every movie, they’re nearly interchangeable. I think if the movie starred Michael Cera as the lead role in this film, it would still be the same movie.

She Would Rather Party in Oz

Why was Dorothy so set n going back to drab, black and white Kansas? Was Auntie Em that much of the life of the party? If the truth were told, she would have expressed her desire to hang out with those wild Munchkins:

As part of my evolving Dorothy story, this is the ds106 Truthful Movie Poster assignment

Imagine if movie posters told the REAL story about the fillm they’re advertising. Redesign an existing movie poster by changing the text/images to tell us the real story. More examples at http://www.holytaco.com/classic-taco-if-movie-posters-were-honest.

Of course, I am making up what is real (cause that serves the higher concept of my story, meh). There are lots of posters out there to work from- I liked the bold motif of a poster for the Tybee Arts Association:

The bottom text was easy to clone brush out in PhotoShop. I went for a few more details, and clone brushed out “The Musical” to replace the text with “The Psychedelia”. It’s the small things that make a difference right? Right?

For the main text, I gave upo on matching the font and just went with a art style one, Kino MT – the lower text is Helvetica Neue.

And for a crowning touch, I tossed in a spilled Martini glass to lay on the road.

Remix #3 (Design): Dumb in 90 Minutes (Truthful Movie Poster)

I definitely wanted to give this assignment a try–the challenge (as Lindsay points out)–is generating humor with the remix. Is my effort funny? We shall see.

Which film to choose? The one that came to mind immediately was Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), a Nicholas Cage / Angelina Jolie matinee film. Here’s the original movie poster:

One big mea culpa is necessary here: I have not seen this film. But twelve years ago, when the movie arrived in theaters, I remember thinking that it looked pretty mindless, and that a snarky film reviewer might use “Dumb in 90 Minutes” as the title of a negative review. (For what it’s worth, Rotten Tomatoes scores the film at 25%–a certified rotten score–which is pretty bad.)

And so here’s my remix:

The work took probably three or four hours all told, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. The most difficult work came in creating new letters. U, B, T and I weren’t so tough, but I struggled with M. My first version had the second leg of the M at an odd angle that looked really jarring, so I spent probably an hour tweaking an N into something better. I think you have to look closely now to notice the amateurish work. Check out my tutorial for more details.

I guess someone could quibble that the film actually clocks in at closer to two hours… but it looks like most reviewers would have liked it to be shorter. :)

The Lost Cause: Jurassic Park

I chose to do this assignment because I read the description and thought it was funny. I looked through the other projects that people had done and I liked how it is a creative project, but it also it’s a joke or sarcastic remark about a movie. So there is an art element to it as well as a critique. As soon as I saw that I thought about all the movies that I have watched and made fun of because of cheesy plot lines or funny characters or just a movie that didn’t make sense at all, and I thought this project would be a fun opportunity to showcase my movie critique.

So the film I picked was The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Mostly because I like the Jurassic Park movies, but when you think about the logic, if people just stopped going to the island inhabited by man-eating creatures that shouldn’t even be alive anymore, then all 3 movies are just examples of what happens when you don’t use common sense. Okay, well you can’t really blame the characters in the first movie because they did know any better, but Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm returns to Dino Island even after having nearly died on his previous trip. I took that plot line and used that as truthful movie poster’s slogan.
