For this assignment I was to pick something about people/society/ the world that aggravates me and make a psa billboard about it.
I immediately thought about the whole wearing UGGS ( or any boot really) with shorts with and a hoody or jacket look. I can’t even find the words to describe the words to describe just how much I dislike this look. In my eyes it absolutely,positively horrid, but I digress. In order to do this assignment the creator suggested using a GIMP (I had no idea what this was) . I took me a minute to grasp the GIMP process( I’m technologically ignorant when it comes to anything other than simple activities) so I actually ended up spending a good amount of time creating my billboard. Anyway, here’s my public service announcement to all of the lukewarm ladies out there .
Using Gimp or a similar program, create a public service announcement billboard on something that really aggravates you about people, society, the world, etc. It can be serious, goofy, but not offensive. Use a 680 x 300 work space in order to mimic the space of a billboard and have fun with how your positioning, font, colors, and images can help get your message across in a small space. Take it to the next level but superimposing it on a photo of an existing billboard!
I live in Salina, KS.. All I see around her is a bunch of stupid ricer Honda boys driving around with spoilers heavier than their cars.. Useless body kits, and retarded tail lights… The cars are slow and ugly. It’s just something that must be stopped. So that’s my bilboard
How much fun is GIMP? Well, when its not crashing, incredibly fun. I especially had fun manipulating the layers during this assignment. Although GIMP decided to give me a hard time, it was well worth the wait. I went through a couple sayings in my mind before I settled on this one, a little tease at vegetarians (no offense intended!). I found my images through Word clipart, and used the layering process so that the white excess that came with them didn’t interfere with my chosen background color. I tried originally to use an actual billboard than layer my own words over it, but GIMP was not dealing any of my shenanigans and refused to do it. However, that didn’t deter me from these wonderful three ?’s.
The Assignment:
This is silly, But I had fun making it, and figuring out how to say what I wanted to say. PLUS! I can’t even tell you how hard it was to get a sponsor for the billboard.
This is a serious problem ladies and gentlemen, seriously.

This is my design for the PSA Billboard assignment. I created the image in GIMP by first taking a photo of spilled medication, then overlaying each pill in the foreground with family members. The pills in the background have keywords that relate to important parts of an individual’s self: goals, memories, love, talents ect. This represents how those who commit suicide are leaving behind their capabilities and also the people who truly care about them.
I got the inspiration to create this from a friend of mine who’s had to deal with multiple suicides in her family and didn’t know who to talk to about it. I think there should be more billboards like these around because there are many people in the U.S. who are coping with suicide in their lives, and they believe that ending their own lives will take away the pain. This method doesn’t take away the pain…it just creates pain for someone else.
Is there something about society, people, the world, or just anything that really bugs you and you want the world to know it? Then create a PSA billboard!
