Nate Craig – A Character Like No Other

Nate 2

Name: Nathan Craig (Nate)

Age: 26

Sex: Male.

Physical Description: 5 Feet 10 inches tall, Neck length, well kept, brown hair, green eyes.  Athletic without being musclebound.

Sign: Scorpio (October 31 – no joke!)

Marital Status: Looking :)

Likes: Halloween, Ultimate Frisbee, Mom’s Cookies, Late Night Walks, Rabbits (I had one when I was 10 :) ), Being Outside, Friends, Family (Of course!)

Dislikes: Pressure, Bad Friends, Cigarettes, Cancer (We Will WIN!)

Background: My name is Nathan Craig, but my friends call be Nate.  My mom and dad are Janelle and Todd.  I have a sister Alie who is an actress and model!  I was born on Halloween night in Richmond, VA.  My dad has pictures of my mom dressed as a troll going into the hospital.  He was dressed as a doctor.  He told me he got in so much trouble when he got cornered by an irate mother asking about her teen-aged daughter who had gotten stitches that night.  I guess she thought my dad was the doctor who had given the stitches.  To make it worse, there was a hospital Halloween theme of the Adam’s Family.  I saw another picture of mom with her doctor dressed as Fester Adams!

I grew up in a suburb of Richmond called Midlothian.  I know, it sounds like someplace you’d see in a movie.  I never did real well in school.  I knew I could do whatever the teacher gave me, but I was just loved goofing off too much.  So, maybe I didn’t do well in High School (barely passed, but that’s another story), so I didn’t get into my first, or second choice for college.  I guess my parents were disappointed I didn’t get good enough grades to go Ivy League but were happy they didn’t have to pay for it either.  Anyway, I went to school at VCU.  I majored in Anthropology and minored in African Studies.  I took a year off to do the Peace Corps and worked in Africa.  After graduating, I started working for a non-profit called SOS Africa.

Right now, let me see.  I’ve seen so much joy from people who have no possessions.  It makes me really think hard about what makes me happy.  I want to go on some dates, but it is so hard to actually find the right person, know what I mean?  I’m looking for someone who can find the joy in a sunrise or seeing the smiling face of someone who gets to go to school for the first time.

Gwen’s Character Bio

This is from a fanfiction I’m working on about my character in Final Fantasy. Dweeby, I know, but it’s a thing!

Why speed date when you have all you need right here?

For one of my character assignments, I chose the Create Your Own Character assignment.  Although, instead of creating your own character as the assignment suggests, I chose to elaborate a bit on my main man Vinny D! In order to meet some of this weeks criteria, I chose to collaborate Vinny’s story with that of “Johnny Corner Pocket”.  Johnny Corner Pocket is Landon Epperly’s character, and Vin has a problem with Mr. Corner Pocket.

Vinny D

Appearance: Vincenzo “Vinny D” DeMartino is a tall, handsome man.  His charm kills all of the ladies, although he is extremely dedicated to his wife.  He has your typical Italian complexion and hair/eye color (as he was born and raised in Sicily, Italy).  His hair is always slicked back fresh, and he has even coined his own haircut called “The Vin”. He’s always got the strap on him, but you’d never know it under his Armani suit.  Armani is an everyday suit, because Vinny is ALWAYS dressed to impress.

Likes: Vinny not only likes, but LOVES his family.  His beautiful wife and children are what keeps Vin motivated throughout the day.  But, there is nothing Vin loves more than the Italian Mafia.  When he was born into the Mafia, it became the most beloved thing in his life from day one.

Dislikes: Vinny D hates, with a passion, a man by the name of Johnny Corner Pocket.  This man is a ladies man, and always hits on Vin’s wife in public.  Johnny’s laid back attitude really puts Vin over the edge.  But he’s a nobody to the Mafia, so there is no reason to cause unwanted attention over a selfish emotion.

Personality:  Vinny D can either be your best friend, or your worst enemy; this being in your own eyes.  Vin has a standard emotion around everyone but those he loves.  These loves are either his family, or Mafia brothers, and everyone else is basically just “there” to him.  His smile, friendliness and confidence can make anyone feel like a friend.  On the inside, Vin is an animal waiting to be unleashed.  He’s got a way about him that makes any outsider trust him.  He’s smooth, witty and unusually clever.  He dropped out of high school after his Junior year, but don’t let that fool you.  He is one of the smartest (especially street smart) people there is.

Place in the World:  Vinny knows just as anyone that knows him does, that he has one place and one place only in the world; THE MAFIA.  Although one sees the mafia as just killing, drugs, etc., there is much more to it than that.  There is an exceptionally strong importance of family with this group, and he is no slouch when it comes to that.  Vinny is a father that is always there, and he does anything to protect his family.

This assignment is worth 5 stars.

The Skinny on Johnny Corner Pocket

I chose the create your own character assignment but since I have already created a character I’m going to expand on Johnny “Corner Pocket” McCormick’s life and what his life is looking like now. I inclued Jack Eaton’s character, El Jota in this and collaborated with him the story of the two characters. First, here are Corner Pocket’s interests and characteristics.

Appearance: Johnny is a tall, slender man with brown eyes. He is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs around 170 pounds. He has short, dark hair and always slicks it to the side. Johnny has some sort of facial hair on him at all times and is never clean-shaven. When he doesn’t have a toothpick hanging out of his mouth, he’ll have a cigarette to replace it. His clothes are rather raggedy but always find’s a way to make it look good. Johnny is a ladies man; the girls (Lena Meyers) love his style, his hair, and his swagger.

Likes: Corner Pocket has two main loves, billiards and money. Nothing gets him more excited than playing a great game of pool and winning a lot of money from. Johnny was never into having flings with any girls until going on the talk show Inside Talking with Lena Meyers. He fell madly in love with her from the first time he laid eyes on her.

Dislikes: El Jota for taking the love of his life from him and losing money.

Personality: Johnny is very cocky and very into himself. He thinks he is the best at everything he does. He does not lose and when he does lose he is a sore loser. He hates losing money. That is why he only gambles with counterfeit money. Johnny loves talking in third person because he loves hearing his own name. He is the life of the party.

Place in the world: Johnny is an only child. He hasn’t seen his father in over 10 years and does not get along with his mother. Johnny lives with a friend from high school in Boston where he has lived his entire life. Johnny was pursuing moving to Las Vegas but has now turned his sight to winning over the love of his life Lena Meyers.

Johnny Corner Pocket McCormick has hired Lenny’s Hitman Service to take out El Jota for stealing the woman of his dreams, Lena Meyers. El Jota and Lena are now married and Corner Pocket will do whatever it takes to destroy El Jota. Johnny laid eyes on Lena first and then El Jota stole her from him. Johnny has put his billiards career and moving to Las Vegas on the back burner to fix what El Jota ruined.

A Little More About Jota

One thing for sure, Jota has a dream. He has a desire of owning his own multi-million dollar estate with a supermodel wife, driving a red Ferrari 458 around town.
Born and raised in one of the party capitals of America, Miami Fl, Jota knows how to boogie like no other. As a 25 year old college graduate, he is taking his chances by opening his own nightclub. His posh grandma is in love with the idea and decided to help fund the business. He also has the brains on how to get it done. Graduating at the top of his class with a degree in Business Management from Miami, Jota has it all.
Jota knows its gonna take a lot of hard work to get his club world known, but he is willing to do what ever it takes…
Single, 6’2″, 180lbs. P90X body, absolutely ripped. Not the most tan lad around which is slightly undesirable but its nothing photoshop cant fix. Reddish brownish hair that is perfectly styled every day. Blue/green eyes that the ladies get lost in. Proportionate facial features that could be featured on the cover fold of a popular magazine including sexy lips that have kissed thousands of beautiful woman around the world.
Jota has a intense love for a good Chipotle burrito bowl. Brown rice, double meat (steak and barbacoa combo) fajita peppers, tomatoes, corn, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, and lettuce. This is Jota’s main diet.
Recently, Jota just married Lena Meyers, the host to a poplar talk show: Inside Talking. This was quite unexpected and some fans are not happy, such as Johnny “Corner Pocket” McCormick. Rumor has it that he hired Lenny’s hit man service to take me out. Im not too worried about it. I just have to make sure I keep one eye open for the rest of my life.

This Create your own Character was a Fanfic assignment. I started with a blank blog post and referred back to my own character from the beginning of the year. This assignment is worth 5 stars however I do not think it should be worth that much.
Landon Epperly’s character was used in this assignment.

Create Your Own Character

For my third post, I chose to complete the assignment titled Creating Your Own Character.  The instructions asked me to write about a paragraph of backstory, including the following information:

  • The character’s appearance
  • The character’s likes
  • The character’s dislikes
  • The character’s personality
  • The character’s place in the world

I sat down to a blank Microsoft Word document and thought about how I could cram all of that information into one, not-so-boring paragraph.  Then I stopped worrying about that and just daydreamed about my character.  I decided to write my description in first-person and considered the relationship between the characters.  My narrator was a woman doing community service at a senior center, and the character I was describing was a passive elderly woman estranged from her family.  Focusing on the disgust of the narrator allowed me to easily create several paragraphs that answered all of these questions.  Here’s what I wrote:

Evangeline Sullivan had deep-set eyes and a large forehead that stood out prominently under a wispy layer of blue-tinged ringlets.  She had carried the same tube of Revlon Cherries in Ice lipstick in her purse since 1996 because she despised the Walmart where she’d purchased it.  There had been a gum-chewing boy there with tattoos who called her “lady.”  I think he reminded her of her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, but regardless, she hated tattoos and vulgarity of any sort.

I told Evangeline multiple times that she could purchase that lipstick from anywhere—Walgreens, CVS—but she refused to shop anywhere but Walmart.  Her loyalty was only hindered by my inability to answer this question: Will that boy be there?

I had been playing Blackjack with Evangeline and the other senior citizens on Wednesdays for three months now.  Evangeline was the quiet one, the one who never screamed “hit me.”  I always had to ask her twice if she’d like another card and she’d nod eagerly and smile an adorable, denture-enhanced grin at me.

So one day Evangeline and I got to chatting over Jello. (Evangeline loved Jello—unless it was green or pudding could be made available.) As always she told me how much she liked it when I visited and said I reminded her of her daughter, who lived in Vermont.  This Vermont daughter seemed like quite the piece of work: Apparently, she had moved Evangeline down to Florida “for her own good.”

See, Evangeline’s husband was still alive.  He had Alzheimer’s though, and the Vermont daughter thought it would be best if poor Evangeline didn’t have to watch him suffer.  So she shipped Mrs. Evangeline Sullivan off to the Sunshine State without so much as an “Is this what you want?”  But Evangeline never complained.  She liked the sun, I suppose, which was good for her joints.  And now here we were playing Blackjack together as if everything in the past no longer mattered.

Table for One – FanFic Assignment

“Table for one, please.” He says in a crowded Saturday morning where all the hungover kids scarf down their breakfast in an attempt to calm their stomachs.

Kevin Reowl’s six foot frame follows the waitress to the table and slides into the seat and stares at the other chair across from him. She hands him the menu and places a neatly wrapped fork, spoon, and knife beside him. “Anything to drink?”

“Water for now.” He says and opens his menu, green eyes lazily scanning the pages. He hated waffles and eggs and skillets. He just liked bacon and the odd orange juice. He’s kept one ear piece in and the other dangles around his neck. He’s supposed to, though. That was the plan. Go in, scope it out, and leave.

Kevin Reowl takes his position seriously. He works for someone who knows exactly when targets will be arriving at certain places. Then he’s sent out. Soon, she’ll arrive and the waitress has placed him in the exact spot he needed to be. Of course, the Boss knew that, too. He set an elbow on the table and rested his jaw in it, fingers brushing his short, curly, brown hair. He enjoyed sitting alone on missions like these. He was able to have some alone time to himself and think about his life.

He ended up with this position when a good looking woman entered his life and told him that he would be perfect. He must have looked confused. Perfect for what? Marriage? A doctor? An all-star quarterback?

Nope. An spy.

And so here he was sitting in a restaurant waiting for the next target to come into play so he could get the details he needed and leave abruptly. Maybe he would buy an orange juice. if the waitress ever came back with the water.

Whatever. He wouldn’t care either way. it was just something to make people think he wasn’t a creep or something.

Kevin heard her voice and his looked up above his menu. He glanced down at his watch and nodded. Right on time. Now he could finally complete this.

____________________________

There’s a short answer to that assignment for DS106: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/creating-your-own-character/. I could go on for a lot longer but I believe I covered the majority of the criteria of the assignment. I really enjoyed this little assignment. This prompt came from actually hearing a guy ask for a table for one. I found it very interesting and decided to write about it here. Any feedback would be great on it. Can you tell I’m an English major? This might actually spin into a longer story for another class of mine.

Something like this I will definitely do in an ELA classroom of mine. I would love to tell students to just listen to conversations around them and something might spark a story. I’ve had this happen to me several times. Just seeing what a person looked like had a story spinning in my mind and I ended up writing it.

Writing about a character’s likes, dislikes, appearance, backstory, personality, and what their place is like in their world is definitely a great place to start for a character. If I were to continue this story I would add in more details about him but this will suffice for now. Again, an assignment like this is a great way to get students thinking about characters for stories.

Another great place would be to ask students to think up questions they would like to ask a character who lives in their mind. Tell them to think up ten questions and not just basic “What’s your favourite colour” ones, either. I’ve also had to do that for a creative writing class this semester.

Overall, I love writing exercises so whenever I get the chance to do them, I’ll do them. I’ll definitely continue writing some DS106 Fanfic or Writing assignments.

Creating your own character

Create a character covering all aspects of them. Write about a paragraph of backstory, cover their appearence, personality, likes, dislikes, and what their place is in their world.
