DS106 Final Project: Professor Samuel L. Jackson

For my DS106 final project, I decided to tell a story in the day of life of Samuel L. Jackson, Ph. D.  Now the real Samuel L. Jackson does not actually have a doctorate, which is why my Professor Jackson does.  My Professor Jackson teaches philosophy at the University of Mary Washington.

The reason that I chose to use Samuel. L. Jackson as my final project character is simply because of my love for his movies.  Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained are two of the greatest movies I have ever seen.  I absolutely despised Jackson’s character in the latter, but the fact that he was able to make his character so despicable amazed me enough to love it.

Any distinguished professor needs at least one glamour shot in front of a classroom of students, and that is exactly what I created for Professor Jackson.  I borrowed the idea from the Professor Groom Poster Design Assignment.

I started off with a preexisting stock image of a professor in front of a class as a template.  The premise of the original design assignment was to replace the head of an already existing image with that of Professor Jim Groom.  Instead, I replaced it with the head of Samuel L. Jackson.

After I had this stock photo, I imported it into GIMP to begin editing.

I then found a picture of Mr. Jackson’s face in a similar position to the professor above.  I cut around the head using the free select tool

Once I completely cut away the background of the image, I positioned it over the head of the professor.  Some scaling of the head was necessary to make it look as natural as possible.

With a few more little adjustments, specifically blending the borders between the head and the background, the image was done!  Professor Jackson now has his very own classroom glamour shot.  Here is the finished image:

The image on the board is related to organic chemistry, which is quite different from philosophy!  I like to think that Professor Jackson is quite eclectic in his studies, and does not limit himself to simply one subject.

This Design Assignment was worth: 4.5 Stars

The struggle

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

For this story, I didn’t want a happy ending at all.  I wanted it to be as suspenseful as the rest and I figured the only way I could do this was with a sounds effects story.

Using audacity, I uploaded and trimmed down each sound that I used from freesound.
sounds

Here is the list of sounds I used
People struggling
Girl screams
Male grunts
Woman breathing
Glass breaking
Cry for help
Body falling
Walking
Radio tuning
Pushing button

Here is the final sound

If you noticed, the last sound of the girl humming, is the same sound that was in the wolf video.

Wolf clip

Part 1 | Part 2

I hope you liked my creepy video.  It originally wasn’t supposed to be in the story but as I was writing I realized it had been awhile since I added a new media.  Once again, I didn’t choose anything in the assignment bank, I just created my own video assignment.

I wanted Red to encounter something really creepy while snooping around and I thought I needed another wolf reference, so I went to YouTube and found a video of what looked like wolves eating a man.  I downloaded it using savefromnet then I uploaded this to Windows Live Movie Maker and clipped it down, because I didn’t want the video to be too long.  After I did this I made the video black and white and took the volume off.

I thought this was boring like this so I thought some nice scary music would really set this off, so using freesound, I looked up scary sounds until I came to this verrrryyyy creepy humming sound.

Now that I had my perfect video and perfect music, I used Audacity to clip the humming sound down to fit the length of the clip.  I thought the sound needed to be a little louder so I then adjusted the volume a little higher.

Once done, I uploaded the music to WLMM along with the clip.

Again, I thought it wasn’t complete.  What would make a clip even scarier, I thought.  DUH! Having it suddenly end! I went to YouTube and found a video of tv static, uploaded this to the clip and now finally, I was satisfied.

Blogging

Part 1

The first media I chose to add I got the idea from the assignment bank using a web assignment called Storytelling within the web, except I didn’t do this exactly like the assignment says.  Instead of altering an already existing webpage, I wanted to make my own, so I thought of making a new blog site.

Using WordPress, I went to my main dashboard and created an entirely new blog site, which I titled adventures of red, just to go along with my story.  Knowing that I wanted her to live in New York,

I used a  New york skyline picture as the header,
new-york-skyline-2013-at-night

then typed up a new blog post.
blog post

To make the story a little creepy, I wanted someone to leave a strange comment on her blog.  I couldn’t think of how I could make the comment look like someone else’s so I sent a comment myself to see how it would look.
blog comment original

I realized I definitely didn’t want the comment to be from me, so I got the idea to change it on Microsoft Word.  To do this I uploaded the image of my comment.

I found a picture of a wolf to use as the icon
85-wolf

The uploaded and sized it down to fit over top of my picture.  Next, to change the name and time stamp I simply inserted a text box and found a color similar to the comment background to use as the filler color for the text box.  Then I changed the ont size and placed it on top.

Business Card

I present to you, my final project!
The-Voice

To make this simple business card I used an already installed template that I found on Microsoft word.

Then I simply added the formation I wanted to and added a small clip art picturing by searching “bricks”.

I got the title for the company from my Uncle’s masonry shop, and just replaced his name with the name Wolfe.  Then using google maps, I picked a random street address in New York, altered it a little so not to be exact, and created that address.  Then I made up a fake new york number using their zip code.

I couldn’t find anything in the assignment bank that this represented so I guess I would consider this a visual assignment that I created.

Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Final Project

Rescue

After Julie has decided to join a group of people, who oppose the government of Thasis,  there are tasks for her. A group of dancers are accused to have despised the warnings of the authorities to stop their futile doing as dancers but rather offer their services to the good of Thasis, which was working in a weapon factory.
They have locked up the dancers as if they are dangerous criminals. Julie is part of the group which is assigned for rescuing the dancers from a well watched prison. Part of the action has been recorded and you can listen to it here.

I did not choose an entire film like proposed in the assignment “Context”, but just a trailer of the movie “LockOut”  and a short clip of the film. I imagined a rescue a chaotic event and this way you may not be able to find a certain plot in the audio but rather an atmosphere, which is intended.
I opened the two video clips in my movie editor and took the parts I needed. The result I saved as an mp3 file and uploaded this to Soundcloud to  be able to embed it here.

Animated Dance

This video for my final project means to show a group of dancers and their art, for which they have been arrested. It is just a dance, but the authorities of

I created a mashup assignment for this video, where I propose to rotoscope a dance or sport sequence. Unlike the assignment description I draw the outlines with a pencil on paper and scanned the drawings. I used my video editor by adding the scans and combining them with the sound of the original video

Pursuit

Julie has attended a forbidden party and has just realized that she is now wanted by the police. A police officer detects her and she runs away.

For this little audio story I altered the ds106 assignment “911, What’s Your Emergency?” in the way that a police officer calls his or her head office. He takes the radio with him or her and reports what happens.
I recorded what the officer says with my voice and added a police radio sound effect in Audacity. I as well put in a running sound and recorded myself gasping for breath. All together it makes the impression of a police officer pursuits a suspect. I’d rather liked that the gasping and the spoken words come together. The next time I may record me gasping and speaking the same time.

Spying Eyes

A suspect goes to a forbidden party. The authorities send a spy after her, which the following Gif illustrates.

This is another part of my final project. After Julie has decided to go to the underground event, she arouses suspicion to be a traitor to her government and employer. Still it is not Julie’s intention to betray anyone, she has just been curious. As you can see the spy’s interpretation is different.

I did this gif the way it is described in the ds106 handbook. I also applied a black and white filter, and a coloring filter in a video editor and scaled the original, so that mainly the eyes were seen in the frame.

The corresponding ds106 assignment idea you can find here. Besides I was inspired by Andy Forgraves example, which he uploaded just about the time I was looking for ideas on my final project.

Wedding Palooza!

For my next assignment for my final project, I created a new assignment (yet again) which calls for creating an invitation to an event. I’m surprised that this wasn’t a design assignment already, but it doesn’t hurt to make a new one.

*I suggest reading this post after you read the final blog post*

So the event that the invitation was created for is a wedding! I am in serious wedding mode because my sister is getting married this weekend! I am so excited, but that is why I am up so late working on my final, because I need to be in South Carolina by Thursday and I want to be able to focus on it entirely. However, my sister’s wedding came in handy when making this assignment. My sister was very impressed with all of the work I had been doing for ds106 that she asked for me to make her wedding programs while I was home for spring break. It was actually an honor, my art was going to be part of her special day. After many drafts and emailing back and forth, we finally got a whole design (including a monogram and I made myself). Since I still had the monogram saved, I decided to just use that for my wedding. This made my planning stage so much easier. I had all of my fonts figured out and I had all the colors worked out as well.

Using Gimp I simply just added some more text describing the details of the wedding. However it still looked a bit bland to me, so since the wedding is taking place on the water, I decided to freestyle draw some waves on the bottom in blue with an accent color of green. I have a tablet laptop which means that I have a stylus that goes with it, so drawing things freehand is a bit easier than using a touch pad. I thought it came out nicely. What do you think?
