Design Safari

I had fun with my Design Safari this week. Once I had a little bit of understanding and a grasp on some of the elements of design, I was able to notice them in things surrounding me. I even had trouble pinning down what category I wanted to put some of the posters and advertisements in because they all had several elements in them.

Daily Creates

I really enjoyed completing my Daily Creates this week. They were interesting and thought-provoking ideas that were fun to talk about and explain in my blog posts. They also just made me really happy in general because whenever I think of my old house, I think of my childhood, and it makes me smile.

Roadtrip Radio

Here is more of my description of what exactly we did this week in terms of collaborating on the radio show, the midterm project. It was fun to think of things once my ideas started flowing and everyone started to contribute and think of cool things!

Design Assignments

These were interesting to do this week!

My best friend is really pretty…. I showed her this picture and she was really creeped out by it. Not a surprising reaction, obviously, because she looks like death and a zombie combined.. Awful! 1/15

Dr. Seuss was difficult to manage this week. Not him actually, duhhh, but a cover of one of his famous children’s books. Green Eggs and Ham. One of my favorites as a kid. I couldn’t get the hang of image editing… maybe in the next few weeks I will get better. 4/15

My group’s radio project is called “Roadtrip Radio” and this week I designed a t-shirt to advertise for it. It was a really fun and creative process. 6/15

After being frustrated earlier in the week, I finally was able to complete this assignment. I used a different picture and different image editing program to complete this album cover. 9/15

I completed this assignment just because it was fun and simple! Four squares, four pictures, one image. 10/15

I used something by Jack Johnson earlier today to add text to my own custom t-shirt and I’m using another song by him in this assignment to create a typography poster. Banana Pancakes <3 12/15

This one was pretty easy and interesting to do. I love creating stuff with music, it’s always my favorite thing to do With this assignment, we had to create a design that would reveal the title of a song and people have to name that single! So fun! 14/15

So this assignment was really cool! We had to create a minimalist poster for a tv show/movie. So I did one for How I Met Your Mother! One of my favorite tv shows 17/15

An Autobiography of a Computer Virus

I really must like this class ( I enjoy it way too much)…..the work and time I put in is amazing….because hardwork is not my forte! So now to get some extra credit…lets get started .

Here’s presenting to you the story of a virus.

This assignment has been carefully created by ME and I take the pride in announcing its debut into the web world!

This is sort of like an example of how the assignment should look like!

An autobiography of a Virus -Thats what I called it!

So the assignment is:

Create an image by taking a photo of an daily object. Manipulate it using any photo editing software such as GIMP or Photoshop to make an image that represents a computer virus according to you. (Nothing complicated- just an image of how you think a computer virus looks like)
Then write an autobiography of the computer virus.( That is ,a story pretending you’re a computer virus)

Step 1: Creating the Image of Virus

I used this photo as a base to create my image:

This is a photo I took of three white board magnets on a lid of a container.

I used the hue-saturation option to make the image look like this:

I then used the posterize tool to make the image look like this:

Lastly I used the smudge tool to draw some virus DNA strand randomly in the picture.

My final version of the virus looks like this:

A colorful still with enough green to show how infectious it is.

Step 2: The Story of the Virus

Amidst a lot of wires and plastic I sit wondering about my future while I peek back at my past. I was born to a reputed family of Virus. My family history leads back to the time these humans didn’t even exist. Some cheek they have to run around telling everyone they created us. I had a very adventurous childhood. My family, that is,my parents,my one million siblings and I were always travelling. My dad worked in a company that dealt with supplying services to computers. Business was good and flourishing. I had a very happy and relaxed life travelling from one computer to another. Not to forget mentioning the deluxe apartment we had at every computer my dad was transfered to.

It was one green afternoon,it was my 18th birthday…..when suddenly the bitter news struck me! I had leave my family..home ….and go far away for a mission with billion others involving a new computer software. It felt like darkness saluted upon me. I was not prepared….yet….to leave my family…comfort and get myself involved in some serious mission as such. But I had no choice…it was a decision made by the World Virus Association. I had to obey although i didn’t want to. I packed my luggage and boarded the flight to PPP computer software along with my friends………

A year has passed since that wretched day. Not a day passes without mising my old life…it was a very golden time indeed. The mission has been going very successful. However, I still keep wondering whether this is where i want to be and whether I will ever see my family again. My future seems far …too far that it looks like nothing but dark hole!

Hopefully the story was not boring! Its not a huge plot but then all you need is a short story.

I complain enough about the workload for people to assume im engrossed in my book. My friends know better…..any day off I go shopping! When outside ,my phone is my best pal so yea random people would think “will she look up from her phone?” Given the amount of serious questions my classmate ask me forced me to put that image in! I think all i do is dress up and live life! But…………….What I really do is …..spend hours on my laptop!!!!!!!!

I made this meme….first i so badly wanted to try it out! Secondly….as we have been talking so much about college and education, I thought a fun take on my life as a college student would be nice! The real effects of college and the education system today!

The final section ” Surfin’ on Sunshine” requires a ds106 assignment from a category I have not done before…so after much thought and consideration I zeroed in on a writing assignment!

The assignment chosen……..

“Is Social Networking A Different Language?”

What’s it about?

“Some professionals believe the language we use on social networking sights is different from everyday language. They say this because of the words like g2g, ttul that we use on a consistent basis over text messaging, aim, and Facebook messenger. Write a short paper on this topic. Be sure to include some of the saying we use, which one’s you understand and don’t understand, and most of all discuss if social networking language is in fact different from our every day language.”

My life revolves around a lot of LOL ,ROFL and LMAO… Not a day passes without using (that is typing) any of these terms. The language of social networking is different as stated by some professionals. However, i would say differently…..the social networking language is the language used by “us” ,todays young generation. I have realized that is easy for me to relate to what is written online because these terms or ideas are present at some point in my life. Although maybe in person i wouldn’t say LOL out loud but it is term used online to display the emotion of the moment which i can relate to. “gtg” which mean “gotta go” is not a very foreign phrase. Any student is most likely to say “I gotta go, i have class now” almost everyday.

The social networking language is just our everyday language abbreviated (maybe a lil too much) so that we can type less! Afterall given the time we spend online social networking we would have to bear with finger/hand aches along with the ever increasing back pain! However, like i said it would be pure greek if you are not someone who is aware of how todays generation speak. I mean i had to give my dad a list of what each term meant once!

Now a list of common social networking phrases:

Rofl – Rolling on the floor laughing
lmao – laugh my a** out
gtg – gotta go
ttul – talk to you later

nm – nothing much
sup – whats up

and sometimes omit the vowels while typing sentences or phrases/words!

Thats all i can think of for the moment!

while making that list i realsied the beautiful language we surrounded by everyday! LOL

Apart from ruining everyones spelling knowledge this whole new abbreviated vocabulary i would call is just made for convenience and a way to relate to life i guess!

I so dont get what those new faces made using punctuation marks mean and also “smh”! I know all i need to do is google but then yea watevr!

The third and final ds106 assignment for the FALO section. As it was required to do assignments from different categories ,I decided to give Audio Assignments a try.

The assignment is called “Spring Break!!!“

What I had to do:

Take a 30 second take of what your spring break sounds like. This could be anything from the sounds of a page turning of a book to a WILD PARTY! So let me know what you have going on.

Story: I am planning on going back to Sri Lanka during the spring break. April in Sri Lanka is usually the the hottest(as in warm) month in the year. The sun blazing right above our tropical island, we roam around in our flip-flops. Having been freezing for the last few months , I do miss my tropical weather( you should have asked me a year back and I would have said something totally different). So right now ,everytime I think of spring break, all I can picture myself is jumping into the pool . Few pool parties with my awesomely crazy family. I dont know how much I am gonna really “swim” but then theres gonna be lots of water splashing,so called swimming, making up our own styles and just simply enjoying the break! If god wills ,thats what my spring break is going to be like with not to forget lots and lots shopping! So far thats all thats planned !

Story:

Took this picture while I was mesmerized by the snow! Snow was falling,people walking, the car wiper going to and fro- And this picture was clicked midway when all this was happening! On my way to class early wednesday morning this was just a sight worth watching!

“Minimalize your philosophy” My first ds106 assignment for the “fear and Loathing Section”

“Pick your favorite quote OR make up your own phrase which describes a philosophy that you try to live by. It can be about love, friendship, family, education, culture, health, charity, etc. Design a minimalist poster depicting the concept. Extra challenge: Try to include a unique element that makes it YOU. Don’t forget to explain your thought process. “

The quote/philosophy I chose:

The above image was obtained from a site called cherrybam (and they allowed it to be used by even providing a html code-awesome people!)

So I brought the artist in me alive to create this poster(see below):

Process:

Created a new blank page on GIMP
Used the pencil tool to draw what I believe is the glamorized version of our real heart(that is minus the valves and arteries).
Changed the outline color to red using fill tool.
Still using the fill tool ….filled the inside of the heart using a pattern fill called ‘mud’ to get the brain like effect!
Pattern filled the background using a fill called ‘marble’.
Wrote the text at the bottom using the text tool.

Story:

Honestly speaking I dont live life by quotes thought I love reading them. So I chose a quote that matched/suited the wayI think in life generally. Realized most quotes did suit me but then finally decided on this one. So the whole idea here is I really think its important that being nice/good does not mean acting brainless! Its very important to be rational, calculative and smart along with a good heart! Writing this I remembered another quote/saying which says something like ‘one thing you should never have in life is regret!’ Basically, carry both your brain and heart with you always and hopefully never regret/feel bad/be hurt in life! I really dont know how many can really relate to this but then again this is ME; extremely calculative!

The extra challenge says to include me in the poster – I made it so i believe that just makes it me! The color ,format and everything was done the way I want it to be! and I love marbles(as in the ones used on the floor)

What I had to do:

What I did: In my wordpress dashboard, I selected ‘Appearance’ and then ‘Header’. In the header page I chose an image I had from the ‘upload image’ option.

Story: This assignment was something I have been wanting to do . I came across it when searching for an assignment and thought why not give it a try! The picture used is a random photo I clicked of a blue rose cushion. As the theme of my wordpress site’s appearance is blue I thought this might look good!

My 2nd ds106 assignment for this section!

What I had to do:

“Color splash is a technique to emphasize details- you remove all color from a photo, and then restore original color to a single object.”

Process:

Open the photo using GIMP
Duplicated the image (Image -> Duplicate)
Added a Alpha channel for the layer.
Using the eraser tool with the transparency option ,erased the part of the flower I wanted in order to bring back its original color.

Story:

I got the inspiration of coloring just one flower from a picture I had seen where someone had colored just one sunflower in a sunflower field. It took me sometime(alot of time) to figure out how to do this in GIMP. Google still remains as the savior!

This is a picture of a flower vase at home clicked by my uncle and I happened to see it! It was a nice image so thought I’d use it for this assignment-saves time nah!

Car Lust! That’s what this assignment is called……and the name says it all!

The story behind the car:

I love this car! This was my cousin brother’s old car(I can’t believe he had the heart to change it)! When I first saw it I was like how come I never knew you had this earlier!!! This was one rare instance when I was head over heels over a car!!! It’s still around home so I get to see it! I am told the model has changed but who cares ……I still adore it the same ! Every time I see it…I wish I could drive in Japan!
