Ash: The Evolution!

“For this assignment you need to pick any chacter and follow thier progression that they have had (TV characters from a long standing TV show will probably be best).  Use video clips to show how the character has changed and grown up over time.  Try to make their progression seem as dramatic as you possibly can.”

– 4.5 stars

As soon as I saw this assignment, I knew I had to do it. I had the perfect character in mind, one who I grew up with and still to this day love: Ash Ketchum from Pokemon. I was OBSESSED with Pokemon as a child. I had every card, every game, every stuffed animal, and saw every movie in theater. While my cards are now boxed away and my stuffed animals have all been sold off or donated, I still have my all of my video games. I also still watch the original series on Netflix when I’m feeling particularly nostalgic. Basically, I love it. I love the Pokemon, I love the trainers, and I love the story line.

Because I grew up watching the series, in a round-about way I grew up with Ash. As I got older and matured in real life, so did he in his own right. As the show continued (despite the fact that he never actually ages) his behaviors and attitudes matured too. For this reason, I felt like he was really the perfect character for this assignment. I focused mainly on the way in which he acted at the beginning towards others and his Pokemon compared to how he handled wins and losses in the most recent seasons.

To complete it, I used Windows Movie Maker. IT was relatively easy considering we’ve spent the last three weeks working on video and I enjoyed getting to do another video assignment. I started out by scouring Youtube for clips of Ash, mostly making sure to include stuff from the original show as well as the newest stuff. There are A LOT of seasons (18 in total), so I thought showing the oldest compared to the most recent would have the most dramatic effect.

I then used “The Fastest Video Downloader” to move the videos from Youtube to my desktop. From there, they were uploaded to Movie maker and I got to work. I cut down the full episodes into short clips that showed times when Ash was being mature, and times when he wasn’t doing such a good job at it. Once I had all the clips I wanted, I ran through it to make sure it flowed well. I then saved it, exported it, and uploaded it to my youtube channel. That’s it!

Goku’s Growth

Going from just a boy with a monkey tail who wants to win the martial arts tournament to being one of the strongest fighters in the universe due to his bloodline is a rather drastic change. As you watch the video, follow Goku’s growth in maturity and strength as he meets the love of his life and fights to protect the Earth from all of the evil aliens. Be warned, this is Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z so there will be a lot of grunting and screaming as he is charging up.

For this four and a half star assignment, I decided to use Son Goku from the series Dragon Ball to show how a character grows over time. The series is something that I watched constantly as a kid and Goku is the first character that came to my mind since he grows tremendously. He learns martial arts from different people, he stops an army from taking over the world with their robots, he defeated the Demon King Piccolo, and even ended the reign of an alien tyrant. Goku’s strength kept rising as he completed each of these goals and even showed that if you work hard enough, you can do anything.

To create this assignment, I first had to download all of the clips of Goku that I wanted form YouTube using the website, ClipConverter.jhI then opened up the clips in Sony Vegas and ordered them in a way that a story of Goku’s evolution would be told.cc

The assignment itself wasn’t difficult, but it was a bit time consuming getting all of the clips and deciding on which ones to use. There are just some many episodes of both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z!

Serena Changing

A Changing Character: For this assignment you need to pick any chacter and follow thier progression that they have had (TV characters from a long standing TV show will probably be best). Use video clips to show how the character has changed and grown up over time. Try to make their progression seem as dramatic as you possibly can. (4.5 stars).

For this assignment, we needed to create a mash-up video of a character. I chose the show, Gossip Girl, which is my absolute favorite show. I chose my favorite character as well, Serena Van der Woodsen, (played by Blake Lively) to show this character progression over the show’s period.

I used iMovie, which is so great! I found many show clips on YouTube and used Fltvo.com to easily convert my video and add it to iMovie. I inserted a title page which is on the left hand side under “Content Library”. I also used Transitions which is located here as well.

Here are my clips I found on YouTube:

Blair and Serena Taking Pictures, Blair and Serena Fighting, Dan and Serena WeddingPilot,  Blair and Serena Fight,  Dan and Serena, Last Chance.

This was simple to create, and I really enjoyed going back and seeing different clips of her character, who really does change throughout the show. Her fashion sense, her personality, and her love life changes many times and it’s so cool to see. I loved her character and always thought it would be cool to make something like this mash-up to view how she changes.

This mash-up assignment showed me how this could be an awesome progression of anyone, not just a TV show or movie character. These mash-ups are great evidence of anyone’s progression that can be documented for special events like graduation, birthdays, and holidays. This really is a great memory capturing piece of work.

Blair’s favorite character

I decided to incorporate Blair (my host character) with this assignment.  Blair grew up watching Full House on Nick at night.  Blair used to watch this show in her late years of elementary school / middle school but still watches re-runs to this day.  Michelle is Blair’s favorite character on the show because she portrays such a fun and positive attitude.  Blair chose to focus on Michelle from Full House to show how she grows and develops over the seasons.  For this assignment Blair took different scenes from various seasons to show how much Michelle grew!  She started out with Michelle on Seasons 1 and went all the way to Season 8.

Best of Ross and Rachel!

Wow this assignment took me a lot longer than I thought it would and in the end I am only 80% satisfied with the finished product!  Today’s DS106 assignment came in the form of a mashup.  I spent way too long clicking through the choices but I finally chose one.

A changing character required me to pick my favorite character from an ongoing TV series and show video clips of the character’s changes throughout the series.  ‘Friends’ is my all time favorite show, so it only seemed natural that I complete this assignment using this show.  I decided to focus on the history of Ross and Rachel over the 10 seasons (if you are not familiar with the show, sad for you if you’re not, Ross and Rachel date on and off all 10 seasons).  Some clips are longer and some are shorter but the goal was to show a dramatic change.

I used Clip Converter to download YouTube videos of Friend’s clips.  It was very easy to use and required no reading instructions, my kind of program.  I then uploaded all the clips to Windows Movie Maker and edited the clips from there.  I added a title page and credits page and captions depicting each season.  I was unhappy with the transitions between clips.  I couldn’t figure out how to make them fade in or out nicely and make the transitions smoother.  Maybe next time I will try a different movie making software.  Anyway, here is the finished product!

You might be wondering what this video mashup has to do with technology in the classroom…well I took my classmates’ advice from last week and decided to discuss how I might use something similar in my classroom.  I was thinking this could be a cool way to show a student’s growth over the year; to show the progression of their writing, reading tests or progression of their blog posts from fall to spring.  It might be a little challenging for third graders but we could work on it together as a class or save this for the day I might become a technology teacher for all grades….

Evolution of Beadie

Hiya! So this assignment can count towards the final project, it doesn’t have to but I just thought this would be a fun thing to do! i Did the A Changing Character mashup assignment. Although this was really tedious, I had a lot of fun going through to find different beatrice moments to use. I first downloaded each episode that Beatrice appeared in, mainly in season 2 and a few episodes of season 3 and 4. She does appear in season 5 but I stuck with season 2, 3, and 4 because these were the ones we watched during the semester. So once I had everything in iMovie, I skimmed through each episode and added where ever Beadie came up on screen. Now I admit this took forever. But it worked out because I definitely grabbed scenes that I would have missed otherwise. Once all of the scenes were all in one place I made a pass through to cut down on specifc scenes. While I was skimming the episodes I included most of the scene itself. That made the video almost an hour long! I’m glad I didn’t keep everything! So once I cut down on the scenes I went through another time and cut out some smaller appearances that she had because I wanted to really tell the story of Beatrice rather than little snippets of her appearing on screen. Once that was done I realized I cut down the video from an hour to just under 10 minutes! Definitely better than an hour long video! Granted it still is pretty long but I think it really shows who Beatrice was.

A view of what it looke like to edit the whole thing! Here is the final product!

The Evolution of Herc

This assignment was perfect to show how much Herc has changed since season 1. Although there were so many moments I could have picked from, I picked what stood out to me the most. The first thing I remember of Herc was the incident with the desk. Then, I loved when Herc was talking about how different the times are, whether it be from clothing to technology, Herc always made a comment. Then he became a Sergeant. These are only a few of Herc’s moments throughout The Wire.

The Evolution of Herc

For some reason the video is not able to embed due to the content, youtube would not allow it to be embedded.

Process:

For this I went on Youtube and searched for the moments I could remember. Here is a list of the video’s I used:

I then used savefrom.net to convert the videos to mp4. From there, I used iMovie to upload the clips and arrange them in order of the seasons. Then, I added a title slide and a title slide at the end.

Evolution of Robin Williams

For this mashup assignment (4.5 stars) I chose 11 movies that starred Robin Williams to show the evolution of his career.

I found the movie clips on YouTube and used Clip Converter to download them.

I uploaded the clips in Window Live Movie Maker and trimmed them down. I added a title slide, fades for the changing scene and captions to show the title of the movie and the year.

The whole process is very simple just time consuming.

I uploaded the final movie to Vimeo, and here’s what I have!

The beginning and end of Brooke Davis

A Changing Character – 4.5 Stars

For my first mashup assignment, I decided to give A Changing Character a shot. 9 seasons of One Tree Hill came and went, in which I watched every single episode of each season, and now it is all over with. My favorite character through the entire show was Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush). Over the entire series, she transformed from a young, didn’t care a whole lot, spoiled, flirtatious, cheerleader, into a business owner, independent, mother and wife, as well as a genuinely kind woman. Another reason I chose to show how she changed throughout the series is because I thought she had grown the most from a totally different person as she was in season 1, episode 1.

In order to get the video clips of Brooke Davis throughout the One Tree Hill series, I used YouTube to search for good slips which I thought represented her. I got a clip from each one of the seasons to give it the bit more oomph I thought it needed to show her stages of growth through it all. To download and save each clip from YouTube to my computer, I used a website called SaveFrom which takes each YouTube videos and converts them into a Mp4 and saves it to my computer.

After having all the videos I wanted to use, I found on picture of Brooke Davis that was memorable for me because it was during the season where she was beginning to realize that she needed to change and get her life going in the right directed, so it is a picture of her standing in front of an overhead projector of words that people use to destroy others. That is when she realized she couldn’t be the person to knock people down, nor not care about them.

To convert all the videos to my own video of Brooke Davis, I used FreeMake Video Converter and uploaded each video to the template as well as the picture I set as the beginning of my video which brought me to where all the editing can be done.

I went through the videos, and cut only the selections of each video that I wanted because I didn’t want my final product be an entire movie that bored you to death for an hour. I cut the clips down to where it was mostly just showing Brooke Davis and her ways, which ultimately brought the time of the video down to roughly 7 minutes (which I felt was reasonable considering the overall time span of growth I was showing with the changing of Brooke Davis).

After I was happy with the length and transitioning of the videos and picture, I clicked on the convert button on the top toolbar, and converted it to a Mp4 and saved it to my computer.

This assignment was a lot of fun, time consuming, but still a lot of fun. I got to re-watch shows and parts of One Tree Hill I absolutely loved, which makes me want to watch the series all over again (if only I had the time for 9 seasons, ha!).

Many Faces of Drew

For my second Remix Mashup I chose “A Changing Character” for 4 1/2 stars. I chose Drew Barrymore because she has an extensive portfolio of work, making it simple to obtain a variety of clips to choose from. I used IMDB to remind myself of lifetime work in the movie industry and gathered my choices from YouTube. Once I had all my files all that was left was to begin plugging them into Movie Maker and choosing transitions to blend the clips together. The final collaboration is below:
